Review from Iris C.

Just had my very first brow wax at Phia with Helene and I couldn't be happier. She was super attentive and meticulous (which is so important when it comes to brows). She asked all the right questions and got it right the first time. Anyone who's been new to an esthetician knows how hard it can be to get your brows exactly how you like them.
Honestly, my favorite part was the almond oil she put on to reduce the redness. It smelled so yummy.
You get the chance to give the name of a friend (or two) you'd like to refer and they get a free brow wax or mini facial and then you get $10 for each person that comes in. Uh...yes please!Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 1/26/2012

Love this place. They are totally up front about pricing and how long you'll be there to get the service done. I have always been thrilled with my cuts (even a dramatic 7 inch chop turned out AWESOME). They do not rush you and really want you to be perfectly satisfied when you leave.
I like their online booking system. I haven't had the best service when calling in (called to cancel an appt. And they scheduled me for 2 additional appts?? But it seemed to be a fluke and not a normal thing) I would absolutely recommend this place!Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 1/20/2012

Let's get one thing straight: I'm very concerned and picky about my hair. Since I just moved here and I had no clue of where to go to get my hair styled, I was very frightened of anyone touching my hair to begin with.
So, by using yelp for reviews, I narrowed it down to three places, Phia being one of them.
I took a look at their website and while the style is a bit... plain, I was impressed by their content. I like the fact that you can get a look at the stylists and know their backgrounds and rank before you enter into the salon, as well as what products they have to offer. Its an Aveda based salon, so if you're into that type of product, then this is defiantly the place.
Since it recommends booking an appointment for a client consultation for your first visit there, I did one with a stylist named Alyssa. Once there, the receptionist let her know that I arrived rather quickly and she personally came and walked me back. She took a look at my hair, discussed what could be done with it and even booked me an appointment to come back in the next day.
In regards to the actual process of styling my hair, she knew exactly what she was talking about. She showed me what products she used for my hair as well as the amounts she used, took her time making my hair look perfect and made sure I left that place feeling comfortable and confident about my hair. She even gave me her phone number to contact her in a week to see how everything would turn out and keep her informed on the progress as well.
They do offer you coffee, tea, or water once you are inside waiting to be served and during your wash, they offer you a sensory treatment. I took the mini facial and was pleased. I paid $45 for a wash and cut and my hair was a mess once I entered in.
Overall, it was a great experience. I plan to go back.Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 12/5/2011

Had my first hair cut in 2 years there. When scheduling the appointment I told the individual what he/she would be working with. The scheduler was very attentive to my concern and I ended up having a great experience. The stylist listened to everything I said and I trusted her expertise. I allowed a complete stranger to cut years of growth off of my complicated hair and she did not let me down. I was there for a very short time and got the "change" in my life via hair cut that I was looking for along with a great customer experience. It was pricey but you get what you pay for right?

Review from Sarah H.
you know.... I trust Yelpers. So when I see a 4-star salon, I assume I'll get at least a 4-star haircut.
Oh my god this is the worst haircut I have ever had.
I got a haircut last-minute at Phia salon last night. I was in desperate need of a haircut so I went to Phia since they were still open and my normal salon (Lucky 13) was booked for the evening. It was nice they were open late (9pm) on a Friday. The person who checked me in was very nice, so this one-star review isn't reflective of the service he provided. He offered me water, tea, and coffee. Super. Seemed like it was going to be a nice place.
Before the haircut, I showed pictures of what I wanted and also told the person who cut my hair that I have a double crown in the back that needs weight or it will stand up straight and give me the awesome illusion of male-pattern baldness. I thought we had an understanding. I left the salon with my hair standing up straight in the back. There was a moment during the haircut when my stylist made a kind of "oh shit" face and I knew she'd cut too much in the back. And instead of stopping there... she kept cutting. SERIOUSLY?
Okay, so that was a pretty bad mistake. But the rest of the hair was looking pretty cute, and even good salons have messed that up a little. I can forgive. When the bangs were almost done, I commented that I wanted them a little shorter so they wouldn't sit on top of my glasses. She obliged and shortened them up.
Now when I've got home I realized that my bangs are completely uneven - the middle is a good inch longer than the rest. There is a single strand of maybe 50 pieces of hair that is over an inch longer and hangs down to my nose in the middle. okay, what the crap is this crap. I hadn't noticed in the salon because they had been styled to the side. I snipped one long strand myself but the bags are still a complete mess. I really don't know what to do because they're already pretty short.
So basically, I don't have enough hair anywhere to fix this atrocity of a haircut.
I can say with confidence this is the worst haircut I've ever had. The mistakes were sloppy and amateurish, and the back won't be fixable until it grows out. I had never been to Phia before last night, and now I'm going to have to go somewhere today to try to get the bangs fixed, even though my day is completely booked. AWESOME.Listed in: like, so totally overrated., negative nancy

I came here primarily to get feather hair extensions. I ended up also booking a haircut too since this place had such good reviews.
I was greeted by a friendly receptionist and was asked if I'd like some coffee, tea, or water while I waited. He also brought out 3 jars of feathers so that I could make my extension choices. It was $35 for 7 feathers to be "installed". I was pretty disappointed with the color selection of feathers. I had arrived hoping to get a mixture of purples and blues. I found a lone purple feather and a few very small blues. The jars seemed to be primarily filled with whites, neon oranges, neutrals, and greens. I asked if they had more to choose from and they said that they did not and that these feathers were hard to come by all over the country. I kind of find that hard to believe when I am able to look online myself and find a plethora of colors that I could order. Ah well.
A lady who was in charge of washing my hair came over and asked if I had made my feather selections yet. I told her I was pretty unsure what I wanted since the colors I had hoped for weren't there. She seemed kind of impatient with me as I sat their trying to quickly pick 7 colors that wouldn't look stupid on my head. I ended up picking, 2 small blues, a purple, green, yellow, and 2 whites.
After washing my hair, I met the actual hairstylist who was going to take care of me. Pheww. Her name was Tiffany and she was very patient, friendly, and AWESOME. She went over the pricing with me so that I didn't have any surprises once it came time for payment. The haircut she gave me was probably one of the best I've ever had. I love it. I have been going to a Japanese hair salon for awhile and didn't think it could be topped, but Phia proved me wrong. I highly recommend Tiffany.
When it came time for the feather extensions, I told her how I was unsure of my color choices and how I felt like what I picked was going to look like a vomit of colors all over my head. She played around with them and came up with two clusters that separated the colors into two more similar color families. She also asked if having the feathers might be a problem in my line of work. I was unsure so she placed them where I could easily pin them away if need be. I love them!
I went ahead and booked my next hair appointment for 6 weeks from now (something I never do in advance). I think Phia is now my new hair home!Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 7/15/2011

I have never had a bad experience here. After going a few times you and the staff are basically family. My stylist is Betsy Johnson and we connected on day one.
Friendly staff, knowledgeable stylist of all levels, and an environment where everyone feels welcomed.
You are always welcomed by a friendly receptionist, offered your coffee, tea, or water. After your consultation enjoy a sensory treat either a scalp massage, mini facial, shoulder massage.
The salon is eco friendly, and uses natural products from Aveda. -

I should love this place. Everyone loves this place! But it fell below my expectations. Hear me out:
I got a pedicure here with a friend. We were taken to a tiny room that could have been a glorified storage room stuffed with two chairs. The room got even smaller when our pedicurists (is that the proper term?) came in to start the pedicures.
My friend and I could not even talk to one another because our pedicurists were so busy talking smack about people. We couldn't get a word in. They came over with a silver bowl I thought would be full of products they would use. Nope. It was for me to fit my feet in. And this bowl was not big enough, even considering my average sized feet. I felt like my feet were being made into soup. And then my pedicurists asked me what was going on with my feet. What do you mean what is going on with my feet? Nothing is going on with my feet! I swear! What does that even mean?
It was so weird.
Maybe I should have them deal with my head instead of my toes?Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 4/13/2011

Fantastic!! I am so a permanent addition to this spot. They do it all!
Phia salon is a wonderful place, I was in need of a somewhat emergency cut and they somehow fit me in right before close when 3 other salons couldn't.
Right away the vibe was a better feeling than most salons.. Firstly, they had more guys working which makes me more comfortable because I know the stylists there arent totally cutting ladies all the time. This place is a pretty hardcore Aveda salon as well, which means you get all your pricing up front without hidden costs, a welcome change from your other high end spots. You also get to decide on a facial, head massage or arm and shoulder massage which is included with the haircut.. I took the head massage and it was great, girlfriends havent treated me so well. ;)
My stylist Sunshine was just stellar. Her artsy style was just what my head needed, and she filled me in on some great tips to cover certain secrets I have with my hair as well as correcting some mistakes I have been making.
Usually I'm a cheapo but I totally bought their product (a bit pricey) and I'm really happy with the results. This is really a five star place!Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 4/13/2011

If you'll take a look at my profile picture, you'll see why Phia gets 4 stars. This review is mostly for Donna, my stylist. Note that she did not give me a cut or color, just a style.
Phia Salon (an Aveda concept) is a really, really tight space and it got overly crowded after 2 wedding parties took it over. Even though it was super crowded and we were packed in like sardines I still felt like all of Donna's attention was on me. We had a loose idea of the style I wanted and she really made it come together into perfection. I went from a little worried to really happy and my style stayed put all night!
She didn't really try and push any products on me, although I feel like maybe she was just too busy to woo me into any. The receptionist was nice and attentive. The style cost $45 which seems like a lot, but I believe it's on par with most salons. In my case, it was worth it because it was a great style. I'd surely go back if I ever need a formal style again. However, I'm gonna stick with Kevin at Great Clips Thurber Village for my cuts. After years of trying to find the perfect hairstylist, I finally found Anaya! Too bad I just moved out of Columbus. But while I was in Columbus, I would only trust Anaya with my hair.
She's amazing at short hair. She also really pays attention to your concerns regarding your hair. For instance, I have pin straight Asian hair that isn't very volumous because it's heavy and likes to lay flat. I told her these concerns, and she was able to cut and style my hair in a way that created body. She also fine tuned all her cuts. Since my hair is so straight, you can see where each cut is made. She'd smooth it all out.
Everytime I saw her, my hair turned out beautiful. It was both professional and edgy. Exactly what I requested. She's consistent, friendly, and takes her work seriously.
The Salon has a nice atmosphere. For services outside of hair, I did have a bad pedicure once with a different stylist. The paint chipped off the next day. Never got another pedicure after that.
Overall, I love this place (for hair) and wish I could find someone like Anaya where I live now.
If you have short hair, you must see her.Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 4/19/2011

the experience begins when you walk in. they will offer you tea, coffee, or water while you wait.
then your stylist will come get you and you can discuss what you want to have done. there's no rush.
you get your haircut and then get a shampoo and neck/scalp/face massage which is def the best part of the whole experience.
i started going to Phia approx 1 year ago. i had never gone to a "spa" before. my first stylist was kelly and she is AWESOME. i've never gone to anyone else there.
i've sent a bunch of my friends to phia and they've all loved it even with other people. the best thing about the place is that it feels like spa but not TOO MUCH like a spa. it's relaxing, but you will see some interesting characters there.
definitely go here if you want a cool haircut. i would recommend kelly since she is who i go to, but i think everyone who works there is pretty skilled.
the only reason i give the place 4 stars instead of 5 is that the seating area in the lobby really sucks. they need to clear the area up and put some cool leather sofas there.Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 7/15/2011

Yes, you will know every time i get my hair done because it is worth mentioning and recommending Phia to everyone in the Cbus metro area. ((Steven)) made my hair even more amazing last night by thinning in out a bit since it's getting soooo long (good advice, sir - trim your hair regularly and it will grow longer, faster!).

Review from Lauren L.

The only reason I am not giving Phia 5 stars is because I had to wait 30 minutes past my schedule appt time, and my meter ran out half way through my session.
ROSS was amazing! He explained in detail everything he was doing to my hair, and answered all of my questions that I had. Before he even started he asked me what I was trying to accomplish with my hair (I had a beiber cut for a while and started growing it out about a year ago) and what color I wanted it to END UP. NOT what I wanted the moment I walked out the door. After our consultation he wrote everything down on a piece of paper, told me the exact price for everything he was going to do, the grand total and then said.. "If this price is okay for you, then just sign here and we will get started!" That is fantastic! I feel like I have been to salon's before who charge you for things you aren't even aware of and then you leave with a bill triple what you wanted to spend. At Phia if they quote you higher than you were looking to spend, then you can talk about other options with your stylist!
Also at Phia, they have different levels of stylists for different budgets. So if you don't mind going to a "specialist-in-training" as opposed to a "director" then you can still afford going to this beautiful salon with out breaking your bank.Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 7/29/2011

I am VERY picky about my hair. So much so, that even after moving to Columbus a year and a half ago, I was still driving up to Detroit to get my hair done. After this become a little impractical last June, I decided to start searching for a new salon. One mishap with another salon almost had me driving back to Detroit, until a group from Phia came into my workplace to advertise this awesome salon.
I booked an appointment with Sarah, one of the specialists at Phia. I loved how she took the time to sit down and actually discuss and educate me about hair care-my hair never looked better! I had booked a color appointment, but work called me out of town which ended up turning my hair into a color nightmare when having to visit salons in Chicago and Madison.
I went back to see Sarah again to see what could be done with my hair. I will never let anyone else touch it again! Again, she sat down to discuss whether or not I was concerned with time, the process, EVERYTHING! She even brought out a book showing me the prices of what everything was going to cost-a big plus in my book so that you're not surprised when you think you're getting a $60 color and your end result is over $100 (has happened to me before!). The color turned out so perfect and was exactly what I wanted. Hair that had been fried was now soft and the cut looks great and is easy to maintain. They show you recommended products, but there is no pressure to buy.
The personal attention, coffee service, free facials, lack of pressure AND a stylist that actually LISTENS to you will keep me coming back and will having me recommend this jewel of a salon to everyone in Columbus!Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 4/27/2011

Review from Rhoda T.

I have been very scared about finding a stylist in Columbus after moving here and leaving the best hair stylist EVER in the world (Joel at Atlantis Hair in Sydney, Australia) but I really needed a trim before my wedding - which other people thought I was crazy about doing right before.
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by Phia. To start with, while it's smack dab in the middle of the Short North, the parking is plentiful right behind in a lot for $3 (park all day). Inside the small salon, people seem to be fairly nice and not pretentious. I LOVE the all Aveda products that they use. Most of all, I thankfully got an adventurous short bangs cut by a very young Senior stylist named Sarah. She was pleasant and did a good job at accommodating my particular needs but also made her professional point across when I wanted to cut off more. I tend to be a little ball-sy about my hair which is not something one should be doing a week before their wedding! My hair felt great with the trim - healthy and light.
I'm giving them 4 stars because I personally didn't feel great about the haircut until a week later which is different from walking out of Atlantis Hair when I feel like I'm ready to show it off with a night out right there and then.
To be fair, perhaps I jut need to get used to being with a new stylist that I can trust too so that they can go all out with my hair and not be hampered by my specific requests.
Other great things about this salon is the $10 off for new clients, the "sensory experience" (head massage, facial or arm and shoulder massage) you get to pick each and every time you go, and the overall price I thought was very good but I did pay an arm and a leg in Sydney so what do I know.
By the way, I'm posting a photo of my new haircut taken the next day in my profile pics.Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 9/2/2011

I moved to Columbus from out of state and left my favorite stylist of 5 years. I searched for about a year and finally found a great stylist who had a great way with blondes! I've been going to Aveda salons for the past 10 years b/c they are eco-friendly and make my fine, thin, blonde hair look lively and soft.
I really like this salon b/c my stylist listened to what I wanted and recommended what was going to be the best option. They give you the price before even starting your hair so there are no surprises. This is so refreshing! There are different levels of stylist seniority so the price varies (which is why i didn't assign a price range).
Everyone in the salon is super nice and laid back. Being blonde is truly the most expensive accessory so I am def a picky client... Thanks to my new stylist Steven! See ya in 7 weeks :-)Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 4/27/2011

First, i moved here almost 3 years ago and have gone in and out of so many salons. i got sick of the mediocrity and continued to drive to cleveland to get my haircut....and really not as often as i should. long story short, i got a business card from someone and decided to give PHIA a shot.
i, of course, arrived far too early but was offered tea, coffee, water while i waited. the staff was extremely nice and talkative. (which is so refreshing). i was randomly given a stylist, ANNAH. remember that name, friends. she is truly amazing. i sat down in her chair and felt comforted when she asked me about 2,000 questions about my hair. she had a pen and paper and took notes as i rambled about my stupid hair. after a maybe 10 minute conversation about what i wanted, she was ready to begin. (keep in mind i have short hair, and i'm a girl, so the cut is very important to me). needless to say, the cut was EXACTLY what i wanted....even better than expected. i have found my salon. i have finally found it, and i recommend you give them a shot. my only experience was with ANNAH and the front desk girls....but it was pleasant and i left feeling good about myself.
as far as price goes...it was similar to any other salon in the area. i went to a best cuts type place and paid 5-10 dollars less. this is worth the extra few bucks....if you care about your hair.Comment from Elizabeth B. of Phia Salon 4/19/2011
