A vegetarian cheese steak! WHAT??? It's all in the Mish baby.
Ok, ok, ok. I'm the first to admit...The word "steak" is definitely a misnomer in this case. But call it what you want, it hits the spot.
The mushroom steak is portabella + crimini grilled to perfection. Throw cheese on top of it and it's a late-night winner. Wait a minute, they even deliver to my 'hood :) The veggie life doesn't get any better.
My only digg is that the place is super cramped. They really need to rearrange those metal tables so that people can actually move.
Other than that, Phat Philly is welcomed at my house next time around.
And yet, leave it the last for Phat Philly to compare between the Philly Cheesesteak in Richmond and those in actual Philly. I think for a place that has the name of Phat Philly, its probably a little bit dissapointing in what they consider stellar philly cheesesteak, the prize item. I like how they serve beer in those red plastic coke cups which become misleading as my eyes tell me i'm drinking coke, yet I'm intaking and tasting Newcastle. What a mindfuck.
Yah, sorry Phat Philly. Not quite the deserving of that name in my opinion.
Love the waffle fries!!!
Sandwiches always hit the spot! can't say i've had many Philly cheesesteak sandwiches but these are pretty good.
Eating here makes me feel like I'm hanging out in my buddy's garage. It's comfortable, people greet you like they know you, and people are just kinda mingling about. Food baskets and crumbs are still on the tables but not in a particularly disgusting way. The HD tv was a nice touch during the MLB playoffs and the most interesting of characters are always wandering in to stuff their faces.
Let me just say, no, I'm not from Philly and I've never been there so really... I'm just looking for something that tastes good. The first time we came here I tried the California with the Newcastle Cheddar. I'm not a huge beef eater but the quality is high and I was pleasantly surprised how it didn't feel too heavy. The second time I tried it with the "whiz" cheese and man it changed my cheesesteak eating life! I doubt I'll ever go back. Bread is super soft and buttery tasting. $2 PBR! I'm OK with the $2 soda... I honestly don't find it to be outrageous at all... I mean seriously, where are the haters getting their sodas?
LOVE the waffle fries here, way better than the overcooked limp things next door at Big Mouth. But that's for the next review.
The key is its bread ! Phat Philly cares about the quality of its bread.
Juicy beef+perfectly soft bread+with White American Cheese=I was happy with that. I thought I was in Philadelphia...
They use American Kobe Beef here, that is definitely worth a good amount of stars!
We ordered three sandwiches to go, and had to eat them over an hour after we bought them. They held up okay, but a short round in the toaster oven and we were good to go. I would recommend eating it on the spot!
These are hefty sandwiches. My sister could only take down half of the 7". I wasn't a huge fan of the cheddar beer sauce b/c of the beer, but the others seemed to love it. I wanted a cheesy cheese sauce.
The best part about coming here is the customer service - the people here are SO nice, fast, and efficient. They are awesome, a great business to support!
Three stars for copying Jake's Steaks. I liked it when it first opened because it was like Jake's Steaks menu and it was closer to home, and just as fast as I fell in love with it, it broke my heart because the sandwiches weren't as good as when i first tried them. The meat is good but the bread breaks down in the middle, the sandwich itself is too small and the fries are overcooked. Their customer service is good though, they're always friendly and upbeat and more than willing to give suggestions. I wanted to like them more than I actually do.
When I am asked what my death row meal would be, I (usually) say "Cheesesteak!" (not that I ever expect to be on death row mind you!)
I live two blocks from the cheesesteak shop on Divisidero, so that is my "go to" spot when the jones hits...however I read the reviews, and you had me at "cheddar ale sauce." I made the trek (via bus) to phat philly and man o man just what the hangover doctor prescribed-- Meaty, cheesy nirvana. 'nuf said--run don't walk.
For the waffle fries-- I recommend getting the cheese sauce on the side since they get soggy if you eat them slow with the cheese on top, The nice lady even gave me two ramekins cheese sauce on the side, bless her little artery-clogging heart.
I had to tough it out and only got the "Whole Shi-Bang! Reg 7" because I'd reckon any more than that would be food coma post-eat. After the first bite, I was ruing why didn't I get their foot-long version. Arghh! [shakes fist]...so, must return. Oh, but have to get the cheddar Newcastle beer sauce to go with it. But, instead of just rounding up, their pint of Newcastle ale was $3.95. An order of onion rings was $4 and worth it. Due to TTET (their words), PBRs are $2 at all times.
Five stars because the only reference to compare to this place is that bland cheesesteak place at the mall food courts. Parking was not bad at all. A very uniquely designed post-modern? church was across the street. My added "pics" are not of the foods, but rather FYIs.
Phat Philly should be spelled FAT Philly or at least Phattening Philly.
Any place that makes a sandwich that consists of Kobe beef, avocado, bacon, and cheese whiz can't be good for you.
You know what though? Their sandwiches tasted so delicious that I didn't even care that I would have to run back and fourth across the Golden Gate Bridge 100 times just to burn off the calories from one of their humongous sandwiches.
It was a cold Thursday night when I arrived in SF. After the 6 hour drive my friend and I wanted something quick, hot, and filling. I had heard about Phat Philly from a friend and thought it was the perfect place to grab some grub before we checked into our hotel room.
This place was pretty crowded for a Thursday night but we were able to snag a table in the center of the tiny dining area.
I ordered a sandwich called The Whole Shi-Bang! The name of this beastly sub perfectly described how big, messy, and filling it really was. This foot long monster was made with American Kobe beef, provolone cheese, cheese whiz, caramelized onions, roasted peppers, sautéed mushrooms, avocados, and applewood smoked bacon. This place also makes a homemade garlic mayo that taste amazing, I covered my sandwich with this condiment. This was one of the best tasting Philly sandwiches I have ever had in my life. The meat was some of the juiciest I have ever had on a Philly. This sandwich was just the thing I needed to fill me up, and warm me up after a long drive.
I also ordered a side of their criss-cut waffle fries covered in chili and cheese. These fries were also incredible. The cheese sauce they put on these fries is a home made cheddar beer sauce that is made from Newcastle beer. It was awesome.
The service and prices here are pretty good. For my foot long Philly, fries, and a soda came to about $17 dollars.
The guys who were working the counter were friendly and made our sandwiches really fast considering how busy they were.
I highly recommend this place to everyone visiting SF, just make sure you don't step on a scale for a couple of days after you eat here.
Let me just state that the Cheddar Newcastle Beer Sauce was insanely delicious. I had it on my regular cheesesteak and I wanted it all over my waffle fries and onion rings as well! I could drink that sauce straight!
I'm a sandwich purist for the most part. Gimme the bread, meat and cheese (Veggies absolutely optimal). And that's all she wrote. Why complicate things? Premium ingredients skips down the road with premium flavor hand in hand. Also, it is a great way to truly test out the quality of the overall venue you are at (if they can't do the simplest of simple food preparation, how can you trust them with anything else?!) I like letting the flavors of the food talk for themselves.
That cheese sauce was screaming deliciousness at me. Not WITH me, but AT me. I blew my mind away!!! It completely made the sandwich. Oh My Goodness!!! MUST HAVE. not try, BUT HAVE. There is absolutely NO reason for you to skip this place out!!! Vegetarians, I would feel sorry for you but they make a mean basket of onion rings and with that cheddar beer sauce?? What more is there to want in life? I could probably eat my arm if it had that sauce in it...
Not to mention, service was extremely friendly! Outdoor seating in beating sun was bearable (someone spilled their drink inside and flooded half the seating area) and the weird wacko passerbys made it all the more interesting.
Phat Philly will leave you with a Phat tummy+wallet!
If you don't already know me, you should know I'm actually from Philadelphia (not a poseur from the burbs, but South Philly born and raised, beeyotch) and I have a LOT of love for my hometown. That said, I was a little hesitant about trying Phat Philly, as so many places that aren't Tony Luke's or Pat's claim to have "authentic Philly cheesesteaks," which makes me laugh. Outsiders just don't get it right-- there's usually something a little off about the sandwich, be it the bread, meat, or cheese.
So, it's been only recently that I've gotten back into the meat-eating mode, being vegan on and off for several years. The last time I had a cheesesteak, I think I was going into the 11th grade and it was at Ishkabibble's. Greasy delicious goodness, washed down with a Gremlin.
But enough reminiscing, let's talk about lunch today. I convinced my Philly friend, Shalimar, to dine with me here today to test out the sandwich and see how it compared. I ordered an original with provolone, and Shalimar got one with American cheese and no onions. I wanted to order fries on the side, but was worried about finishing it all so I refrained. Big mistake. For about seven dollars you get a seven inch sandwich, which wasn't as filling as I had hoped it to be, it was mostly bread. I definitely could have gotten fries and been satisfied. Shalimar agreed. For the same price, or cheaper, we could have gotten a sandwich twice as big, had we been on Passyunk Ave (http://www.yelp.com/bi...).
Offering Tasty Kakes is a nice touch, but our Tandy Kakes were not very fresh. Also, hot peppers should be complimentary. It's ludicrous to have to pay extra for hots [EDIT: Apparently, the good people at Phat Philly do have a complimentary hot pepper bar, near the register. I did not see it and neither did my dining partner, but I trust that the owner is not being dishonest with me]. The sandwich itself was pretty tasty, although it felt a little too high-class to be a real Philly steak. The Kobe was delicious and I really enjoyed it, but it's a big step-up from stomach lining, which is the traditional ingredient.
Like I've said before, I'm not a very discriminating philly steak lover. Slap some decent steak on the griddle, don't stinge on the cheese, add a bit of onion, and I'm pretty good.
Phat Philly though is the cream of the crop. I've been there 4-5x since it's opened (for health reasons, trying to stay away). The roll is nice and soft. The meat is Niman Ranch, so you know it's safe and yummy. Both the whiz and the provolone (my favorite) are good. Best of all, they let you have as many peppers (and they have a variety available) as you want.
The service is friendly and on top of it too. I used to live 10 minutes away, but now, sob, I'm 20-25 minutes away.
Only thing I would like better -- they offer a 7" and a 12". The 7" is just a bit too short and the 12" just a bit too long. Be very happy with a 9 or 10". Yes!
Other plus -- if you go with a vegetarian, they do offer 4, count that, 4 different kinds of veggie steaks. Perfect for the Mission.
All right, I'm not gonna lie. I was hungry last night and went total Fat Boy at Phat Philly. I ordered two 12" Whole Shi-bangs. Before you start to think I'm a total Fat Ass I ate one last night for dinner and one for breakfast this morning.
Yea, that's still Fatty Fuck status but who are you to judge meh?!
Food -
First off, I'm used to having more cheese on my sammie's. Apparently it's mixed in on the grill, spread on the roll, and topped off. I couldn't really grasp the taste of the Cheddar Beer Sauce, I think the amount of onions really overpowered it. Bummer. (Note to self: order with less onions and sauce on the side next time)
The meat was fresh and delicious. Diggin' that American Kobe Beef. You can definitely taste the difference.
Drank -
They have $2 PBR all day, every day. I opted for Blue Moon which was around four bucks. $2 bottomless sodas!
If I could change anything about last nights sammies, I'd ask for less onions and a ton of jalapenos. Oh, and more cheese. :D
Pluses -
Open pretty late. (until 11pm the day I went.)
American Kobe Beef.
$2 PBR all day, every day.
Awesome staff. (I felt like I was a regular and it was my first visit!)
Minuses -
Didn't ask me if I wanted fries with that!!
(I missed out on the onion rings and waffle fries because I didn't think to order them.)
I think I'll try a couple of the other places mention in other reviews in order to be fair and objective, but I will definitely be revisiting Phat Philly soon. The mere though of onion rings are making me salivate. I guess I'll have to see what the Tasty Kakes are all about next time too!
On a side note -
I gotta say I gotta agree with Isaac's comments regarding some of the other reviews.
@ the Soda Jerk -
$2 bottomless soda is reasonable, this is San Francisco, not some po-dunk town or some fast food chain. A 20 oz. from the corner store would have cost you about $2. (See for yourself, GO TO THE CORNER STORE, it's across the intersection, ON THE CORNER.)
@ the Veggie Wiener -
They never claimed to to be a Vegetarian establishment. It's something they offer on their menu for carnivores like myself who want to take a break from the extra chewing the delicious American Kobe Beef demands. (Which isn't actually much more chewing because the meats so tender and delicious.) Joking aside, the staff was 100% honest with you about your questions. That doesn't deserve a 1-star rating, does it? SMH.
This is only a warning, not a review. If you're a vegetarian, don't eat here, I asked and they share the grill and utensils for all of the "vegetarian" sandwiches with their steaks.
Here is the conversation... me: "hey, I'd like to order a seitan setak but, do you cook them on a separate grill?"
Dude:"no"
M: "area of the grill?"
D:"No"
M:"how about the spatulas, do you use different ones for the vegetarian stuff?"
D:"no"
M:"so they're not vegetarian"
D: "No, I guess not"
So, fair enough, he told me. I didn't eat there. Thanks for the warning!
Issac, thanks for being polite. Unfortunately, there's no feature for me to respond to your comment so I have modify my "review" but, it's not a review, as your sandwiches are not vegetarian. The difference is that I stated that at the beginning. But, I really wish I could just have left a comment. Yelp doesn't have that feature either.
And really, please don't think for a minute that you serve vegetarians.
They eat there, so they eat meat. you serve people who want to eat meat alternatives. There are a fair amount of people who wouldn't think to ask for whatever reason, but would be bummed if they knew.
You serve Kobe beef, good for you, really. But I didn't come in for that, and this is not a review. It's just a statement that your menu is wrong. Fix it or not. If you do, I may try your stuff, I tried to today, remember?
Wow, what was intended as a personal review of my experience with a restaurant has turned into an all-out affair of slander, allegations of slander, and personal attacks. We have sunk to a new low here, folks.
I didn't like the cheesesteak. I didn't like how it was cut and I didn't like the sauce. I didn't like the restaurant, the music, or the way in which business was done. I was told I'd be called; I wasn't called back.
I thought Phat Philly deserved my review. And Yelp is founded on the principle that everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I meant no personal offense to Isaac, but take offense to his response. He was the face of Phat Philly, and any criticism of his attitude was meant as a criticism of his business. It's incredible to me that this would be mistaken for slander. And it's incredible, too, that I would be attacked by him personally for my review.
I don't know if Yelpers misunderstand the point of Yelp or if Isaac misunderstands the point of business, but my point remains. I had a low opinion of this restaurant and I felt compelled to share. By God was I right in my opinion. Now I'm left to wonder if Yelping is worth it after all.
I'm not from Philly but having lived in CLE I've had my share of cheese steaks and these are very good. LOVE the beer cheese sauce and the all the choices. The Kobe beef was very good, better than what you get back east.
I had the mushroom steak, waffle fries and a $2 PBR! Extra star for cheap cold PBR.
I agree that the prices are a little high but this is SF so it's understandable. They have a pepper bar and hot sauce which is a nice touch.
I got the 12" (PHAT) Classic Philly Cheesesteak with the Cheddar Beer Sauce (made with New Castle beer) topped off with a $2 PBR can, and it was the best cheesesteak I've had. The food couldn't be better.
However, it could be cheaper -- I realize that these are all high-end ingredients, but $9.75 seems steep. Also, the interior design of the place is claustrophobic, and the chairs were weirdly-shaped and reminded me of uncomfortable patio furniture. Overall, a nice addition to the Mission though.
I got the veggie hoagie and MAN was it gooood. Don't worry, even though it's veggie it's still painfully unhealthy. They have four different veggie sandwiches, which makes this veggiesaurus very happy.
Friendly service, convenient location, good value and watermelon wheat in a can.
Legit. I've had my share of Philly Cheesesteaks and this place spells LEGIT. What melts my heart other than the cheese? The meat. Meaty meaty meat. Phat Philly packs their cheesesteaks with peppers, mushrooms and onions. Then they top it off with your choice of cheese. The big surprise? The cheese whiz type stuff. Add a dabble of tobasco and you're all set to go.
Excellent for lunch, especially sitting outside on a sunny day.
Clean restrooms!
Went to Phat Philly with my son Jordan last Saturday after a great Bloody Mary at Zeitgeist. Didn't know they allowed 64 year old's into Zeitgeist! Isn't there a law? Anyway, must admit I had a Groupon coupon, $10. for $20. Great coupon. Steak was very good and full of meat, grilled peppers, mushrooms and grilled onions. Plenty of cheese. And they do use Amoroso rolls. Yeah, I'm from Philly and used to go to ALL the steak places from Steve's in NE to Jim's, Pat's, etc., etc. (And for those who rate Pat's as one of the best... Very good at 2:00 a.m. and certainly a Philly tradition. Always try to go when I visit but Jim's & Steve's take the TastyKake IMHO.) Anyway, PP was very, very good BUT just didn't have the flavor of The Cheesesteak Shop's steaks. Jordan and I discussed this. I think it may be that The Cheesesteak Shop cooks their steak in a dollop of oil? Does PP? Didn't look. God, have been there (Cheesesteak Shop) hundreds of times and can't remember but I think I'm right? They get that certain Philly flavor, lacking in PP's BUT I definitely can say I believe PP's to be the 2nd Best Steak I've had in the Bay Area and I've been to Jake's, etc. It was delicious, just didn't have that Philly taste. Those of you from Philly know what I mean. It's subtle. No kidding. But will definitely go back to PP when in the area.
It's as though aliens picked up a restaurant from a different town hundreds of miles and 30 years away and dropped it here, employees and all. They hooked up the gas and moved a decimal on the prices, and holy crap we're in business! Where is the all-enveloping hipster attitude, the sloth, the almost-but-not-quietness? Not here, I can tell you. I nearly complained out loud as the girl brought my napkins and ketchup without my asking. What good is my training in quick ordering, self service, apologetic table cleaning, and guilty tipping in a place like this? None.
Be gone, polite helpful smiling people! Go back where you came from! We asshole bay area people don't want your kind reminding us what it was like to be pleasant to one another!
The sandwich used what I now understand to be the authentic Amoroso's rolls, as does Theos. They are fine. The steak is top-notch. Some felt is was over-marinated for a philly but I did not. We are not in Philly and we have tastier meat and noses that aren't clogged up with snow.
Because I've decided Cheese-Wiz actually does kinda suck regardless of how many people from the East lap that swill up and call it heaven, I tried the beer and cheese sauce. That is some fine cheese sauce! I would like to make it. Kraft could never make it. Phat Philly does make it. Git sum.
My born and raised Philly man can attest, this is the most authentic-tasting cheesesteaks in town.
Just oh, so good. It's all about the bread. They have great bread here. The meat and cheese and veggies are great too.
Other than the original (with the whiz), I have to say I loved my own take on the classic goodness. The hoagie steak with prov. And some spicy peppers to top it off. Awesome and soul satisfying.
Finally, split a basket of fries topped with their cheddar beer sauce.
This meal is just comfort food to the max. It makes me want to just watch football and drink beer and then belch out loud.
I also have to say, we finally got to try this place, which has been on our "must-try" list foreva, the day of the street food fair. We all know that thing kinda blew with the long lines and lack of food by 1pm. Anyhow, Phat Philly saved our day and satisfied our appetites.
To boot, the guys that work there are supa' cool.
Utz potato chips are simply the greatest potato chips on planet earth. You could not get them anywhere in California except by mailorder. Until now!
At Phat Philly, you can get your snack on for 75 cents a bag! Salt and Pepper, Crab Chips, Salt and Vinegar, Carolina Style BBQ, if you don't know, you better ask somebody.
Thanks Phat Philly for bringing the pride of Hanover to the Bay Area!
Yummmm! Enough said.
My search for perfect Philly continued here today. Think I'm one-and-done with this one. I had a 7" classic philly w./ provelone. The sandwich was bland and (curiously) watery. As in non-grease type liquid dripping into the basket with every bite.
Adding a few of the hot peppers jazzed it up a bit, but it was still lame. I see comparisons to Pat's and Geno's below, that seems appropriate--anyone who spent any time in Philly's knows those two joints are only good for 1) tourists and 2) drunk-off-your-ass munchies after a concert or a Flyers game. Dozens of locals joints make a much better cheesesteak in Philly.
Waffles fries were good, free soda refills a plus. Maybe I just caught the grill guy on a bad day, but I would not return.
Quick lunch today. I dug it, tasted and felt just like a good philly should. Slightly, but not too greasy, fresh soft bread, tender meat. I strayed on got the cheddar beer sauce... delicious.
I admire people who try to update classic dishes. Gourmet mac & cheese? Bacon infused chocolate? Molecular gastronomy?
Phat Philly's spin on the classic cheesesteak sandwich is that they use American Kobe Beef while offering different varieties of combined ingredients. They also offer different cheeses although cheese whiz is still a staple.
I ordered a classic 7-inch cheesesteak with provolone cheese. Unfortunately they don't have swiss cheese which makes me question their "customizable" sandwiches. No big sweat here.
The best part of the sandwich is the bread that is imported from Philadelphia. It's marshmallow soft. Great bread makes a sandwich no matter what you put into it. The provolone, Kobe beef, and grilled onion is good; however, they skimp out on quantity. Sure the quality is good, but I was imagining a messy sandwich that is eaten with "cautioned elbows". I was eating more bread than meat or onions - a third of what I expected.
Along with the sandwich they also give you a plastic cup of cheese whiz for you to pour on your sandwich. This was welcomed and I poured the entire thing in my sandwich, but I kinda wished that they would have just put more provolone in my sandwich instead. Still, cheese whiz is great.
The interior is a contemporary take on the old school open grill establishments. This is something that you'd expect in SF. Shiny exposed stainless steel with a minimal color scheme, accented by little touches such as the interestingly designed ketchup bottles. The bathroom is great since it has a wide sink and cool facet. Inside seats about fifteen while there are several tables outside. You'll most likely be forced to sit at the counter.
Service is good. They bring out your sandwich if it's not too busy. If you're looking for a quiet spot you're an idiot for coming to a cheesesteak joint. Grill clanging will occur all day.
____
If I had a hankering for a cheesesteak sandwich and I were in the area, I MIGHT return. Phat Philly isn't a destination spot, rather a neighborhood luxury.
I decided to try this spot as a recent article in the Chronicle's "Bargain Bites" section of the paper rated this restaurant a good deal. Uh... wrong, either that or their definition of a bargain is different than mine. I don't consider a 12' sandwich that costs about $12 with approximately 5 to 6oz if meat in it a bargain. [The half size is $7]. Sorry, I can get a quarter pound cheese burger, nearly the same amount of food for $5. I can get a three piece of fried chicken for about the same. If I spend $12 a sandwich the freaking thing better be overflowing with beef and gold coins. But sadly, this sandwich is just as chinsy as all the rest. So this is not bargain at all so shame on you Chronicle, now...
...lets just be objective here. I understand these days with the rising cost of beef that getting the nice sized cheese steak sandwich like the ones I got in Philly for a fiver are long gone. In so far as this Kobe beef thing means to me, by the time you fry it up, grill onions and peppers with it and chop the living daylights out of it, I cannot distinguish what kind of beef this is, so all this hype about Kobe beef is just that, hype with a price tag.
I will say up front that the cheese steak here is one of the best I have had here but not any better than the ones they have a Metro Cafe in Lower Haight. And they are a hell of a lot better than the crap they serve at Jay Cheesteaks. But to spend nearly $12 on a sandwich that is mostly bread kind of sucks. So to make this sandwich an authentic cheese steak, order the 12 inch, scoop out the meat on one half and dump it into the other, throw out the empty shell and what you have left is a "relatively" authentic Philly cheese steak sandwich like they served back in the day.
I say "relatively" because in my nearly 55 years of life and hundreds of Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches I have eaten, I have never ever had one that matched those made in most Philadelphia cheese steak establishments. NEVER. Its just one of those kinds of regional anomalies that seem to be impossible to duplicate in any other city. Even NYC.
So if price is no object, your close by and you are just dying to have an authentic cheese steak sandwich then this place will fill the bill, literally. If you are closer to Lower Haight go to Metro Cafe, its about the same and they have great tater tots too.
My only complaint: There was too much stuff in my veggie-cheese steak.
Boo-hoo, poor me, I had to finish the deliciousness with a fork.
Second go around I went with the chicken steak and found it a touch better than the beef.
Also had a side of hot wings...and in the world of san francisco and hot wings (very limited) I found them to be more than decent.

Used the groupon coupon tonight, had a 12 inch philly with mushrooms, onion rings, 3 bags of Utz chips, a Blue Moon and butterscotch tastykakes.
Everything was delicious, the service was attentive and I was full.
Next time we'll try delivery.
I've never been to philly, but when I go, i hope the cheesesteaks are like this. Very tasty. I highly recommend the beer/cheddar sauce. Criss-cut fries are very delicious and they make their chili with the same kobe beef they use in the cheesesteaks (i think...). I had a 12" mushroom steak sandwich and fries w/ a beer-cheddar and chili topping.. Don't know why people would mess around and get a 7" sandwich... Once you get it in front of you, anything less than the full 12" would just leave you wanting more.
another plus, the staff seems very friendly and cool... The owner himself delivered my order. (oh yea, they deliver. also awesome.)
I went here today to celebrate Sandwich Friday with my friend. For $20 even, we split a 12 inch Pizza Philly Steak, order of onion rings, and 2 $2 "Recession" PBRs.
I'm not an Original Philly Cheesesteak kind of person - I merely judge food based on tastyness, and my lunch was pretty solid. There were a little too many onions for my likings, but I'm sure I could have said hold the onions.
All in all, I would probably come back here again with friends.
Came to try the Kobe beef philly cheese steaks. Had the 7-in. combo cheesesteak with the house cheddar beer sauce and their criss-cut waffle fries also covered with the cheddar beer sauce. Loved the amoroso rolls. Yummie all around!
It gets pretty warm in there, so be warned about going on SF indian summer days. Wish it was closer to work so I can indulge for lunch!
I'm an east coast transplant and these sandwiches are the real deal. And they have Newcastle on tap.
Killer tender philly steak sandwiches.
Gotta try it with the beer cheese on the side. Less messy by dipping as u eat. Even better with the bread toasted.
Just hit lunch with a friend and it was awesome. Got a philly classic and they let me sample the chedder-beer sauce (which you MUST have). The place is clean, the food is great and truly unique here for SF. It is great to support a restaurant that knows what they do well and does it. They are not trying to be everything to everyone.
The staff was smiling and having fun enjoying being there. It was asunny day. It all just worked. It is also right off 24th and Mission Bart, so quick to get there and not have to park.
I was not impressed by the cheesesteak I ate here today. I regretted my decision, and thought to myself, damn I should have instead gone next door to big mouth or jay's cheesesteaks (my favorite by the way).
My pepper cheesesteak lacked flavor, it was just really bland. I like my bread oven toasted, and their bread was merely heated on the grill. The sodas at two bucks apiece were just too rich for my blood.
Now, it didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste good.
Came here to watch the last two innings of the Giants and Philly game. The Giants won 7 to 3 and what better way to celebrate than to have a philly cheese steak. Came here after the creme brulee cart because I have bookmarked this restaurant for ages. I need to dedicate the next few reviews to Genieve Y. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't have over 90 bookmarked restaurants to go to.
The cheese steak itself is above average. It is not the best in the city. I believe the cheese steak shop on divasadero is still the best in the city. Buster's used to be a lot better on Columbus but they went downhill.
This place is clean and the staff is very friendly. The waffle fries are really good here too. We had the 7 in mushrooms and steak. I will definitely come back here again.
Mushroom steak and half an order of waffle fries for under 10 dollars. Can't complain.....................now off to Humphry Slocombe.
