So, we were in town visiting and decided to take our baby to his first baseball game.  PGE park was awesome!  We were seated right behind the visiting team dugout and about half way through the game the family in front of us told us the secret of the "baby suite."  (I am swearing all of you yelpers to secrecy here.)
PGE park has a fully equipped baby suite that you can use as you are enjoying the game.  Diaper changing area, books, games, toys, an outdoor deck to watch the game right behind home plate, a tv with videos for your little one, comfy couch for feeding, they have it all!!  We were the only family in there and it was amazing!  If you are a family and thinking about going to PGE park for any event and have a child under 4, you HAVE to go.  No excuse not to.  We had a great time!

Things I learned at PGE park:

My company may get me suite tickets- but they don't buy my beer or $36 Caesar salads.

Don't f*ck with the opposing teams fans if they're within arms reach of you.

Soccer (or futbol whatever) is almost as much fun to watch as it is to play.

While Andrew C. has an appreciation for proportions, he is an ass man above all else, too bad we were in the suites & she was on the field.  Pobre chico!

Things I fantasized about at PGE park:

The cheap food & beer of yesteryear (like 30 years ago)

Combining Justin Timberlake of Omletteville fame with the dorks in the Widmer Hefewiezen & lemon sidekick mascot costumes... mmmm that's a sexy beer time!

I am not a die-hard baseball fan but I really enjoy the game. When living in San Francisco, I did brave the cold to watch the Giants play at The Stick and saw countless games at their "new" glorious park. Seen the A's at the Coliseum, Yankees at Yankee stadium, the Reds at Riverfront Stadium, you get the picture. Not die-hard, but definitely a fan.

The good news is I know I've been spoiled by MLB so my expectations were pretty low in going to the Beavers game. But I really don't think it was just my low expectations that made this park a really great experience though. The park feels pretty new, kind of like a mini version of a major league stadium and there are tons of restrooms. A girl's gotta love that!

We went to a Saturday day-game and the park had a disappointing turnout but this actually worked in our favor as it was the first game for our young kids. So not having to brave crowds was a parental bonus, but as a fan, you like to see a good turnout.

Love that the Max takes you right in front of the park, super convenient.

Though the game itself kind of sucked, it was a good time. We will definitely go back -- and next time we'll check out the baby suite during our kids inevitable 5th inning meltdown.

I didn't know it was still "in" to "pop a collar."

Of course it was probably my own mistake of going to Beavers game on a really sunny and really nice Thirsty Thursday.  And honestly, crowd watching is 3/8* the fun of going to a baseball game.

But come on, with potentially every 20 something kid from pdx at the game I had to wonder: are all the bars on Couch Street closed?

That being said, PGE Park (Or Civic Stadium for those who remember it by that name) is a damn fine stadium in a damn fine city.  It's exactly what I'd expect a Portland stadium to be.  Widmer on tap, heavy glulams supporting the roof, NOT STICKY, lots of snacks, friendly event staff, semi-good team, easy to navigate, and well maintained.

A fun place, definitely entertaining for all ages and visitors and residents alike.

*Break down of beaver's baseball game watching:

3/8 - crowd watching
1/8 - climbing over people in your row / doing that "stand up and kind of turn sideways" thing to let everyone else by.
1/8  - 7th inning stretch / sweet caroline singing.... BA BA BA
3/8  - oh yeah there's a game going on

I'd like to have one sunny Thirsty Thursday please! (How often does happen? 5 times a year in Portland?!)

The place is, well, a ball park. The bleachers could use a little more leg room.

They could make the foods at the concession stands a little cheaper and less colorful so the kids are not so attracted to them.

Oh! And could they sift through the ugly people in the beer garden? I thought I was by the boonies.

I'm seeing cows drinking beers.

Follow the mind of a blonde:

3 out of 5. That's...what...like a 6 out of 10? So PGE park is essentially batting a 600? Wow, 3 out of 5 is generous considering the batting  averages of the players...

(sniff sniff) wait. I think I smell....I smmmeeelll....lip-smackers? and CK One? And lots and lots of Armani's Acqua Di Gio? Hmm. How cute that amateur baseball draws its own amateur crowds!

Wow - does that guy's shirt REALLY say "save a cherry pop a collar"? Really?

Is it safe for that old logger man to be hanging from a rope with a chain saw? I mean...I understand that there's not a chain on it, but it could still do some serious damage falling on a head from 50 feet!

Dang - that guy was reeeally cute...until he did that thing with his fingers and tongue. why. WHY?

$1 beers on Thursday night? I'm so there.

Once the mind processes all of this - here is the result:
3 stars for an awesome summertime venue, if you're willing to put up with the heavy meat market vibe.

PGE Park is pretty damn nice place to go to see some baseball; I have had some really good times here! I have only seen baseball, no other sporting events, and honestly, I don't usually watch much of the game, I just B.S. with friends, drink, and people watch; all with a ball game in the background. Seating is good enough, a little cramped but what the hell!
Beer is really expensive unless you go on a Thursday where brews are only two bucks, otherwise, you will pay an arm-and-a-leg to get your buzz on.
Minus one star for a crappy smoking section far away from the game with no T.V. monitors so you can still watch the game while smoking. I feel as if smokers are being punished.

Oh ya, bark in the park is super cool! Bring your dog(s) to the game, brilliant!

Nice little stadium, very well put together and easy to navigate. We caught a Beavers game on our trip and had a great time! I would love to go to another game in warmer weather and try the Thirsty Thursday that others are ravin' about.

I hear this is a major meet-market.  I've never experienced this, but it's sure a fun place to see a baseball game and they have frequent beer and food specials.  Most of the horny people in the stadium move to the Marathon Taverna after the game.  So in case you miss out on making a connection during the game, head over to the Marathon and he/she will probably be there.

This is a terrific place to watch a game.  The Beaver's games are awesome.  The Timbers, well, not so much, unless you really enjoy soccer (personally, not a fan, to each their own).  The way most games start at about 7pm and transition from twilight to night is pretty cool.  My favorite spot to sit at during the Beav's games is the section way above left field.  A good view, and seeing the Beavers' relief pitchers warm up in the bullpen is a real plus.

However, prices for everything are outragious.  I mean, I think I'd understand the prices more if I was at the RCA Dome or Fenway Park, but PGE Park is only dealing with minor league teams here.  $6 for a Miller Lite is almost as awful as $3.09 for a gallon of regular gasoline.

Great park, you can even watch the game from the street if you don't want to pay admission. Have been many times for the "Thirsty Thursday" baseball, when the park has the atmosphere of a college party. Probably the greatest promotion they've thought of.

As both a Beavers and a Timbers fan, I go here quite a bit and overall am pretty satisfied with the park's facilities and staff.  They have some great food, have an excellent beer selection (Yay Newcastle!), and ticket prices are still pretty decent.

The only downsides to watch out for are:

Thirsty Thursdays:  If you are not in the mood for being surrounded by stumbling douchebags in American Eagle shirts, then avoid this night at all costs.   I love cheap beer as much as the next guy, but I'll happily pay an extra $5 per beer to not be around fratclowns.

The concourse during big games:  When there is an exhibition game featuring an out of town soccer team (such as Preston this year) be prepared for the nightmare of traversing the concourse.  It is way too small to accommodate a full stadium and you can almost forget about the beer lines.   Luckily, most PGE Park crowds range from 3,000 to 8,000 so its not much of an issue usually.

Those points aside though, nothing beats a lazy summer evening watching the beavers, or a raucous night down in 107 watching the Timbers.

I discovered the game of baseball, and thus PGE Park (and the Beavs) when I met and fell in love with my husband--who is a major sports nut...so crazy love hormones might cloud my review.  But, I really do LOVE PGE park.  It is a wonderful place to spend a lazy Portland afternoon--rain or shine--but especially in the sun.  I don't really even care how good the game is, it is just fun to sit and be a part of a historical place (history lesson of "Multnomah Field", here: http://www.pgepark.com...), with lots of other Portlanders who are enjoying themselves.  It is a little slice of Americana--families and baseball.  The beer isn't cheap, and the food is about what you would expect (pizza, hotdogs, nachos, cotton candy, etc.).  It is in a fantastic location, easy to get to and close to the MAX and Streetcar lines...and close to plenty of other restaurants and bars for either before, or after the game refreshment.
What could be better on a lazy summer afternoon?  Sitting there with the sun warming my face, with friends, a cold one in my hand, my eyes shut--but not shut for too long in case a ball comes sailing my way from the field (I've learned that doesn't just happen on TV)...yep, PGE Park is great.

Civic Stadium.

It's name is Civic Stadium.  Psh, naming rights.  Don't believe the hype.  They can't take away our ball parks.  We can call them what we will.

Seriously good place to see these teams though:

Portland Beavers - minor league baseball
Portland Timbers - USL first division soccer
PSU Vikings - college football

I love baseball, so I went to a recent Beavers game. The park itself isn't new but it's a pretty good facility to watch a game. I didn't go during Thirsty Thursday so I didn't get to see that spectacle, but I had fun anyways. Plus it's right near a MAX station so it's really easy to get back home.

Can I PLEASE have baseball back??
Used to be able to go to enjoy cheap beer and some baseball, but now I can't even get a beer cause there are 200 chicks in slutty outfits in line. I completely understand that you want to get drunk and forget about your ex-boyfriend/job/low self esteem, but do it somewhere else, cause I'd actually like to attend a baseball game without 200 'Brads' running around. Besides, you guys already have McFaddens, Barracudas, Kells and Dixie... why can't we have PGE?!
Soccer nights are more enjoyable. I attribute that to the timbers army, a section of rowdy fans armed with face paint, flags, smoke bombs and matchin accessories. They chant real loud and often include a four letter word or 10 (not to mention they have NO problem getting personal with opposing team members) so I would suggest leaving the kids at home.

PGE park, you are as cute as a button and a true delight.

As A's season ticket holders, we were sad leaving the Bay Area.  No more Oakland Coliseum, no more traffic on 880 so we never got to the game before the 2nd inning, no more 8 dollar beers, no more dodging the drunks on the way home.  No more watching fights at the BART station after the game.  We must have gone to over a hundred games there.  Watching on TV just isn't the same.

We moved to Portland and discovered the Beavers.  Off we go to PGE Park for our baseball fix.  Even for a sports deficient uneducated girly girl such as myself, I can tell the difference between minor and major league baseball.  Minor league is amusing.  Major league is good.  But so what, it's baseball, and PGE Park does its best to put on a good show.  The seats are comfy (would be better with cup holders) and the management lovely.   The first time we went my seat was broken and I sent a letter nicely saying they may want to fix it and I got four free tickets.  So we went back and it was "Bark in the Park."   What a great night!  Of course, the food is expensive and not so good, and the beer is tremendously overpriced, so we left halfway through the game and had dinner somewhere else.  We enjoyed the t-shirts being catapulted into the crowd by the Beaver.  The fireworks on the 4th of July were small but fun and the catapulted hot dogs were a riot.  PGE Park could not be easier to get to; we take the MAX in and it's a tiny walk (quite unlike the hike from BART to the coliseum).

Things to avoid:
Don't sit right behind the concrete wall separating the field level from the lower level, it radiates heat and has much less leg room.  We moved to regular seats and were much more comfortable.

Sometimes balls get lobbed into the crowd for no discernible reason.  Heads up or you may get your noggin knocked.

Don't buy beer there.  There are a couple of dive bars in the area that have game day specials, so get your beer on before the game.  Much cheaper.

There's a ticketmaster surcharge for buying online.  Just buy at the box office, they always have plenty of tickets and save yourself a few bucks.

Overall PGE Park is a great little stadium and we have a touch of Beaver Fever!   I would definitely take guests there for a fun, cheap day at the ballpark.

Thirsty Thursdays! Old School Stadium! Mullet nights!

The Portland Beavers minor league team is actually having a contest for  people named "Bob L. Head," i.e "BobbleHead!" Anyone whose name sounds like bobblehead can write in to say why a bobblehead figure should be modeled after them and the winner will get their wish, with thousands of bobbleheads modeled after them to be passed out at a game in the future. Heh. Portland.

God I love getting drunk here on warm summer  thirsty thursdays, then stumbling across the street to whatever bar I fall down into. Seriously, go here to check out the high school soccer/baseball team on a sunny thursday afternoon. Avoid the line to the beer garden and drink in the first row of the stands. You wont even watch the game because the teams suck and who cares anyway. You can watch the overgreased peacock hair men and the girls who think minor league ball games require clubbin outfits while they wait for an hour to get in the beer garden only to discover that theres nothing to do down there but have the short bald drunk guy (me) in the first row of the stands yelling at them.

Truly a Portland summer staple!

Thirsty Thursdays: Still fun way to spend summer night

I have to say, there's not many better ways to spend a night during the summer than at PGE on Thirsty Thursdays. You can get great, cheap beer and watch baseball...or at least watch who's watching the game! Yeah, previous reviewers are right, it's turned into a bit of a pick-up scene and there are plenty of girls who dress in short shorts that most of would never dare to wear but who cares? Ignore them. Us quality girls wouldn't want any of the boys who find those type attractive anyways, so go ahead and let them perve. Go for the game, the cold beer and the fun vibe. It's a great party atmosphere and there are plenty of other fun people around to chill out with and have a fun time.

Tip: There's some decent bars up and down Burnside once you walk out, so the party can continue.

Thirsty Thursdays were the highlight of the summer in Portland.  $2 or $3 light beers and a great crowd ensured I felt like hell every Friday morning.  Start here for the game then wander down Burnside afterwards to the various bars and see where the night takes you.  I still have my treasured "Cold Beer, Hot Beavers - Thirsty Thursday" shirt.

All I gotta say is Thirsty Thursdays are out of control. Gotta agree with the previous post about this being a singles destination. Never in my life have I seen girls wearing short skirts with no undies to a freakin' baseball game. This not only draws the young men looking for some eye candy, but the pervy dads too. So women, if your hubby wants to take the kids to a game on Thursdays, be skeptical.

One thing is for sure, these singles don't have to change when the night game is over and they want to go bar-hopping.

The PGE Park may be small, but the acoustics are wonderful!  I went to my cousin Vinnie's football game against PSU.  he is an awesome linebacker and got several sacks!  He also said that teh 15 of us sounded LOUD and he heard everything we yelled!  The food is cool and inexpensive(for a stadium) and I thoroughly enjoyed myself!

Offering soccer, minor league baseball, and psu football, PGE is a near year round destination.  Thirsty Thursdays are by far the biggest draw in the summer and fall.  Wanna see a small stadium become one of Portland's top ten singles destinations?  Check out the Beer Garden in right field!
