I should probably note that I've been to Pets on Broadway three times, all over 3 months ago (therefore the service/selection may have improved since then). However, that's for a reason.
I admit that this place does carry quality dog food (which is why I went there in the first place). I only feed my pup food that can be purchased in a pet boutique. And although this place can be considered a pet boutique because they do offer this, I still felt like I was going to some big-chain pet store.
The merchandise was cluttered, and difficult to sort through. No sales associate offered to help me, even when their rack of dog clothing dissembled and dropped items all over the ground. When I went up to pay, the associates were too involved in their own conversation to pay any attention to me, and apathetically scanned my merchandise without a real hello.
The biggest distinction that I see when comparing pet boutiques from conglomerate chain pet stores is simple: Because the boutique is smaller (and not owned by huge heads of company), the food and merchandise sold should reflect the owners true interest in the health of animals. High quality food, durable & cruelty-free merchandise, etc... Additionally, I don't want to feel like I'm at a shopping mall. I want the staff to be knowledgeable and to genuinely care for animals and providing good service.
POB has a really big selection, granted, but what they offer in selection they lack in organization and customer service. I've received better service at Petsmart (gasp), when even their 20-year-old part-time staff recognizes that a happy customer is a returning customer.
Honestly, my favorite spot in town for all things pet is Furever Pets on Broadway (just down the street from POB). Go there, and tell 'em the girl with the Doberman sent you.
Great selection, good prices, mediocre service. My roommate and I spent 30 minutes sorting through dog crates without being acknowledged by the staff once. Bring an extra set of hands if you want to get something cumbersome or heavy because the staff doesn't help and a dog crate falling on your head is uncomfortable, to say the least.
All in all, if you know exactly what you want and know where it is in the store, shopping here is fine. However, if you have any questions, I would recommend going somewhere else.
Yes, it's cluttered like some people mention. But, it's also HUGE, meaning they have everything you could possibly need. They are one of a few pet stores that carry my dogs' food AND they take Amex which is almost equally as hard to find in Portland. They cary high quality pet foods. They have a ton of toys, treats, clothes, beds, shampoos, medicines, etc. The staff are always willing to help, often without you even asking. They also have a frequent buyer program.... and they don't make me carry around a dumb card.
I have been using POB for about four years, and while they once-upon-a-time had decent service, it has been in serious decline. If you ask a question you will certainly get a knowledgeable answer, but it's getting someone to help you without sneering. That's the problem. I went in with my parents once and honestly heard them snickering about us. Unreal.
Beyond the iffy service (some team members are better than others) the selection is incredible. They have a number of products you can only find at Furever Pets or another local and ingredient conscience pet store.
I will go here, but I will ONLY go here if Furever Pets is closed and I need something ASAP. I am that put off by their service.
No place to park. Otherwise, this place is great. Great selection for dog food, and they give you a little bit of deal if you buy enough. Make sure to be a "registered customer" and give them your phone number every time you make a purchase. Never going back to PETCO unless absolutely necessary.
R.I.P. Jazz. You will be missed. :(

Ok, let's face it, I go here for Jazz, the turtle. He is such a nice turtle, never snappish, and… Read more »
Serving pets of all sizes
You have to love a pet store where a tortoise greets you at the door.
Pets on Broadway seems to have everything you're looking for every pet, bird, fish or other creature you may have at home. They carry holistic pet foods, a wide variety of dog toys and bulk bird food. At last count, they had more than 190 fish tanks for sale.
It's been around for 16 years and in that time has continued to add on, totaling more than 9,000 square feet. That is huge for a locally owned pet store.
It's all about personal customer service here. If they don't have it, they'll order it for you in a heartbeat.
we visit this place regularly since they have a good streamlined frequent buyer system, although furrever pets down the way also has a good system for frequent buyers of cases and buffalo bones, but it is not automated like the broadway pet system. i take mr. man here regularly as it is a treat of smells sounds and attention from staff. there are guinea pigs and ferrets to fixate on, and mr man keeps saying that he just wants a new friend but i dont trust that look in his eye. they used to have a large tortoise that wandered the store but he has not been around for awhile... hopefully hes back in the galapagos or some happy ever after fairy tale i tell myself when really he may be ... somewhere else aka. dead. they also have free samples that can help get you through if you went out for sushi and now theres no money for friskies. i have always had a good experience.
