Review from Bill W.
Recommended to me by people who live in Houston, this is the best beer place I have been to in Houston by far. The number of taps has to be pretty close to 30, and I didn't see any of them wasted on crap beers like Coors Light. The burgers are no joke. It's been a long time since I couldn't finish a delicious burger, but that's what happened here. The Rancor burger is my pick as it is served with bacon and a fried egg.
I loved the place, but here are the buts:
Do not go here if you are in a rush. The kitchen is good, but it is slow. Inside seating is pretty small, but they have a nice patio. We lucked out and got a seat at the bar so service was great, but by the time we left there was quite a line to get beers. -
Review from Alicia F.
Before you even walk in this place, you can feel the cool vibes radiating off of it. What was once a coffee shop up in the Heights is now a chill little bar that celebrates awesome craft beer.
Came here with a friend for burgers and beers and was not disappointed. The inside area is small, with only a few tables and the bar, but there is plenty of outdoor seating in the shade of the big trees that cover the lot -- perfect for a (almost) Texas summer night! The bartender was super helpful in recommending a beer (hey, they have a lot on tap, and I'm an indecisive person), and let me tell you, his choice was spot on. Boulevard Chocolate Ale for the win!
Now, the food: we got the spinach and artichoke dip, which includes in its list of cheeses the ever tart and tangy chevre. If you love goat cheese, you'll love this dip! It came out piping hot with toasted pita quarters and tortilla chips. I ate the Rancor burger, which comes with lots of cheese, bacon, and a fried egg, all piled on a half pound slab of chuck! A word of advice? Plan on coming hungry if you want to finish off one of their burgers. The fries served with it were just okay; a little soggy for my taste, but eh, it happens. The only thing I really disliked was how long it took to get our food -- then again, they tell you straight up on the menu that wait times for food can be up to an hour when the place is really busy. And it IS a bar, first and foremost. Plus, it gives you more time to sit and enjoy the company you're with before everyone gets quiet from stuffing their mouths full of food, amirite?
This place is far from my usual neck of the woods, but the next time I feel like ditching the midtown/West U scene, you can believe I'll be headed back here. -
Review from Sandy H.
I dropped by here the other night to celebrate my friend's birthday. I had high expectations because of the reviews I saw; however, I was a bit disappointed.
This dive supposedly has more taps on their menu than Flying Saucers, but a lot of their beer on the menu were unavailable. Yes folks, only beer and wine at this joint (and I don't think they have a huge wine selections so if you come here, better crave for a beer).
Food: I tried their burger and fries here. I have to say, I loved the fries, but the burger was okay. It's definitely not worth the 1 hour wait that is written on their menu as a warning during peak hours.
Parking is not bad, there's a lot across the street for you to park, but be careful of huge potholes! Like all the other reviews, this dive is in a neighborhood, which was interesting. -

I wanted to make sure I took the time to write a review about Petrol Station. Great beer selection. Delicious food.
Additionally, I wanted to thank them for understanding and educating their staff about service animals. I went to eat on Sunday with 2 of my friends and my service dog. One of the bartenders, nicely, told me that dogs weren't allowed. I advised him that he was a service animal, and he apologized and told me that he could stay.
2 reasons for not giving them 5 stars: takes forever to get your food (but that may be because they weren't set up originally with a kitchen large enough to accomodate), and ALSO, because they could simply apply to the city of houston for a permit allowing pets on their patio and they wouldn't have to ask any pups to leave :-)
No matter, I will continue to revisit this hidden gem :-) -

Great atmosphere, great beer selection, great staff, but most of all, one of the best burgers i've ever eaten. The fries are killer too.

Tucked away on a street in a residential neighborhood, sits the Petrol Station, a converted garage turned craft beer hangout. What can I say...me likey!
They have a fantastic patio for gathering with friends over a tall, cold one. And, what a cold one! The Petrol Station has an expansive selection of beers on tap and in bottles. If you are a fan of craft beer, this is your place.
As for food, I have had the burger. Only, the burger. But they do a darned good burger here.
One last warning, stick to the evenings if you are not a fan of the kiddos because this place is popular at times with the family set.Listed in: Meat

Going to keep this real real simple; this is a very laid back "beer bar" with bar food..now some may take that as a negative but it is far from that, my friends!! That being said, I will start with the negative; The fries suck ass!!! It's to the point that, why in the hell would you waste time & effort buying real potatoes, cutting them and failing so horribly..I never get that!! this place could easily be a simple 10 stars if they just changed that one thing but again its laid back here..I doubt they care to change the routine..so sad they do not compliment the food much less the chef who is obviously pretty serious about everything else... But!! the burger, the Rancor, is redic goodness prepared to medium smokey bacon, american & swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, a sloppy devine mess it was (*yoda style)!!! even the app, the hummus was so fresh so good so redic!! I didn't try any beers yet but will def be back and will def tell them to hold the fries as I would hate to see any go to waste!!!

I hadn't been in over a year. It was just too convenient. I live in GO.
Then people at work started mentioning petrol station. One eve said 'gastropub' and something about a fried egg on a burger. My visit is long overdue. There are more beers and more wines than last time. More parking and a new menu too. I might go back tomorrow.
The staff is friendly. They know their beers. They'll tell you how they were made, where they come from and why you may or may not like it. They'll even offer you a sample.
The menu has been updated but it was good before. The burgers are GOOD (apparently better w a fried egg, by why risk it?). The hummus plate is good too. And I've even tried the shepherds pie. Good. When I say good I'm probably understating it. Deal. -

"Great Neighborhood Joint--Just Wish Said Neighborhood was the Galleria, Not the Heights!"
I've been here 4-5 times, mostly on Sunday afternoons. If this place was closer to home, i might very well be coming here every day.
The selection of beer is outstanding, particularly given the limited number of taps--these guys really put some thought into their beer selection...the pricing is also very, very reasonable.
Regarding the food--selection is indeed limited, but if you're going there to chow on a Michelin-star-worthy meal, you probably need to pare down expectations. I've tended to stick to the pulled-pork sandwich, and have been pleasantly surprised. Last time I was there the two people I was with ordered the Rancor (burger with eggs and all kinds of random stuff): they liked it , but wished the egg had been fried a little more thoroughly.
I am angling to try the lamb burger and the fish tacos, and then perhaps I'll have a better read on the food options... nevertheless, at the end of the day, yer there to drink, and tide those over with some food--with those parameters in mind, I would think that the food here is adequate.
The clientele is a melange--as you would expect with any neighborhood hangout. Diverse, with a mostly pretty cool crowd, and the occasional neighborhood denizen on a bit of a Sunday binge.
This place is in the middle of a residential neighborhood (Houston zoning--ye gotta love it!), which is why I imagine is not exactly a magnet of nighttime activity.
It's a small establishment that seeks to fill a particular niche--I reckon it fills it very well. -

We went here recently because we heard they fill growlers (which they do) and were pleasantly surprised to find a very chill atmosphere. The bartenders are super friendly and are happy to help you find a beer you will like. We only went for the beer (the selection doesn't disappoint) but the food menu looked pretty good as well. Some of the plates coming out of the kitchen looked like good sized portions and tasty.
All in all, seemed like a cool place, though the inside is kinda small, so tends to get crowded really easily. They do have plenty of patio space though. -
Review from Nhi Q.
I love Petrol Station. There, I said it.
The only minus I can think of is that it is, in fact, located in a residential area and is hard to spot if you're driving around at night and have never seen the place before. I can't speak for the safety of the neighborhood, but it definitely seems shady as hell at night without nary a street light in the vicinity.
Fortunately, once you walk inside, you'll forget all your worries. The wall of taps: it's like a warm, boozy hug at the end of the day (and just what I needed at the end of the a long 10-hr shift). It was here that I was first introduced to Karbach's impressive line of brews and where I had my first sip of Victory's Golden Monkey. Fantastic.
Did I mention the food? The lamb burger and sweet potato fries far exceeded my expectations for bar grub. I'm not disparaging all bars--nay, I've simply found a yardstick by which I'll measure future burgers. PS's ranked pretty highly in my book, so potential contenders better bring it.
The next time you're on the NW side of town and need a place to unwind, pull up to Petrol Station, grab yerself a beer and relax on the patio. Good times await you. -

I wasn't sure what to expect for lunch on a Sunday, but I was excited to finally go to Petrol Station.
There is a fairly large parking lot across the street so it was nice not having to hunt for places to park. There was tons of seating on the front patio and on the back patio. It was the first sunny day in weeks so we opted to sit outside.
The bartender was really nice and really helpful with my selection of beer. I usually like to drink hefeweisen or ligher fruity beer. I asked what was the best Belgian beer on tap and the guy told me about this Brookyln Saison that was perfect.
I also had the delicious Hungry Hippie sandwich. Oh my! It was cream cheese, sliced turkey (like Thanksgiving style), sprouts, tomatoes, and some sort of raspberry jelly. I couldn't finish the whole thing but daaaang it was good.
My husband got the burger and I had a bite of it, it was also really good. Although, I will say it was dripping with grease, which was why I didn't order one in the first place. It would have to be a real rarity to eat that....but it was one of the better burgers I've had in a long time.
I really enjoyed this little place, it's perfect for a Sunday lunch. -

Love this place. Comfortable outdoor patio, chill quiet neighborhood location, AWESOME craft beer selection, delicious burger. Enjoy throwing darts here too.

What Onion Creek wants to be when it grows up.
Fabulous beer selection with serious bar-tenders who know what they're serving and more than happy to guide you through the ones you don't know, or suggest one you might like (they have a knack).
Food is above average although I'm a bit tired of potato chips for a side (I need to order across the menu a bit more, there are other sides).
Great service, the one time they've brought me the wrong food order they actually refunded my money (I didn't ask, they still brought me food anyway). I thought that was unnecessary but demonstrated their regard for their customers.
Their beer brought me in, their service kept me! Take your friends, just make sure you leave a space for me somewhere. -

So, maybe two stars is a little harsh but I hear me out. I've been here twice and both times the Petrol Station (a converted gas station) smells like ROTTEN BEER!! For fuck sakes guys clean behind the coolers! It reeks! We had to eat outside both times and one time it was kind of raining and we had to sit on Chronicles so our asses didn't get wet.
Next big complaint: The beer snobbery. You know, I do enjoy a craft beer from time to time. I'm not really that into it but I understand the basics of beer making and, yes, it is interesting, but sometimes I just want a fucking Bud Light. They don't serve Bud Light or even Lone Star. I asked one guy behind the counter what was new on tap and, I shit you not, the beer was called Vampire Slayer Clown Shoes. Really? Is this a fucking comic con? I thought it was a beer joint. This hipster crap has got to stop. It's turning us all into huge pussies. Speaking of, I think everyone who works at Petrol Station has a beard and is wearing some concert shirt they got in 1997. They all look like Pig Pen from Peanuts wearing skinny jeans. Not appetizing! Hey guys, I know that this world sucks and they all don't understand you and all that shit but PLEASE CLEAN THE BAR SO IT DOESN'T SMELL LIKE ROTTEN BEER! Maybe a little product in the hair and a shave ok? Or at least trim the beard please.
All of that previous shit I can deal with but last time I went I'm pretty sure we got sand in our fries. I've mentioned in a previous review that I try to stay away from the fries and I don't think you can get the burger without them here and they are TERRIBLE. I don't like fresh cut fries because nobody (except one person I know of) does it right. You have to DOUBLE FRY THEM to get them crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. These are just fried once in the wrong temperature and are soggy. But SAND? Freaking sand? It was almost like they dropped them on that filthy floor of theirs and then scooped them back into the basket. They were gritty and shitty.
Let's talk about the burgers. I love a delicious burger. I had the Rankor the first time which has bacon and a fried egg. I love my burgers done medium rare and they delivered on that, but if you're going to do a medium rare burger you have to have a bun that's going to hold up to the juice it produces and this bun just fell apart in my hands. If it was just a roll that was served with dinner this bread would be delicious but I don't think it has any place in the burger department. They are getting too fancy. The diameter of the burger was not proportional to the filling so it was awkward and messy. Poor construction but, in the end, a pretty decent burger. The second time I went I got the lamb burger which I felt was solid. It's probably because you have to cook the lamb a bit more and the burger wasn't stuffed to the brim with ingredients. The lamb burger was much better in my opinion. Much much better. It was fantastic actually. The tetziki had big chunks of cucumber in it which I love.
As much as I loved the lamb burger I'm a purest at heart. I love me a Christian's Tailgate burger and if I want a fancy burger I'll go to BRC or Branch Water Tavern. The rest of the menu looked interesting but the sandy fries and the smell of the place are probably going to keep me from returning. -

This place is AMAZING!! My boyfriend was told about it from his friend and so we had to check out since he knows all the awesome spots! My boyfriend had the Lamb burger and said it was delicious, and I had the Rancor burger... And finished all of it. The fried egg and bacon especially made it even better then it already was. We also enjoyed some of the special choices of beer and hummus as a started. The staff is very friendly and easy going. It is a very nice and chill place to go with your friends to have a few beers and some awesome food. :) Totally recommended!

Drive into a neighborhood on the other side of tracks and you'll find Petrol Station.
Their rancor burger is amazing and their lamb-burger is a culinary masterpiece. Their beer selection is also top notch and the bartenders know their sh*t when it comes to craft beer. Petrol Station has earned it's place as my favorite craft beer bar and restaurant. -

Came here in the middle of Christmas shopping. What a great place. A great out of the way place to eat. Small menu, but if all the food is like what me and my hubby had, you are in for a treat. I had the pulled pork sandwich. Can you say cherry cola BBQ sauce? Very good class.
Is your significant other torn between Greek or American? Get the Mary's lamb burger and squeal with joy all the way home.
They have a full bar with a huge beer selection. Will definitely come again. -

First time here... I love this place! Great music, if you like music from the 70's and 80's punk rock this is the place for you! So laid back and a great place to chill. It's a neighborhood bar so mind your manners.
The food is freakin' delicious! I got the Mary's lamb burger and the wifey got a pulled pork sandwich. So good!!! Huge portions i couldn't finish. I really wished there was a place like this where we live, we drove in from the suburbs, cause I read about this place being cool. I'm thinking of moving out here just to be close to Petrol Station!! Haha! I wished.
I love the fact that it is off the beaten path and tucked away in Oak Forest/Garden Oaks area. A great place for old punks to relive the good ol' days of great music and bar scene. I am in love. We will be back! -

This place is awesome!! So far the only food I have had is their burger, fries, and salad but it is all great. Petrol Station is in a very safe neighborhood in a great location [less than a 5 minute drive and less than a 10 minute bike ride from my location ] This place is very chill and everyone is nice. Beer selection is great by the way. They really do have it all! Don't forget burger/fries/pint night $9.99 plus happy hour all day on Monday's!! :D

Review from Gary Y.
I thought it was a unique location - being a former gas station and what not. But I was slightly disappointed with the burger. It was hefty but just not very tasty and overly salted. I'd prefer Lankford Grocer over Petrol if it came down to food. However, the beer selection was a great redeemer. The outdoor patio is perfect to hang around with a pint or two (or three, etc.)

Petrol station is one of the best bars in Houston to get a quality microbrew. The list is always changing, and it never disappoints. They also have fairly good food, though as of now their kitchen is quite small, so ordering food when the bar is busy will take some time. No worries though, because you can never run out of options for good beer while you wait.

From a first hand experience, I was here last night. This place is all any town needs. Amazing Beer, all on tap. Knowledgeable bartenders. And not a coors, miller, bud, or anything with the word lite attached to it in sight.
Their burger is great and they use a real, not store bought bun. It's an old gas station with plenty of outdoor sitting and great ambience. All it took was a little forethought and they made this place into something special. -

Yo, Petrol Station, remember when I wrote that corny poem about your lamb burger. Yeah, you were awesome, but I have to bring you down a notch. I can't wait two hours for a burger, and even weirder -- wait 45 minutes after the other person at my table already has his burger. Talk about an awkward dinner.
To be fair, I know you are doing your best to change. Please do it fast. Dont become that place that used to be cool but now is not because they refused to change because they got popular. Dont be that guy.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I think it's necessary to point out this place is definitely a pub/bar more than it is a restaurant. The inside is small and dark, not a dive, but definitely still a bar. Maybe I'm dumb, but I thought it would be a good idea to take my parents here for a casual dinner. On that note, it definitely fell flat.
It's a little difficult to find because there's not exactly a sign, but you'll recognize it because it's not a house and there's a parking lot across the street. Watch out when you're walking in. We were literally shoved out of the way by the bartender (/manager?) carrying food outside without a word of apology. When ordering at the bar the same guy was snippy and rude when I asked questions about the menu and asked for water (FYI, it's in an orange cooler on the right side of the bar.) I hope we just caught the staff on a bad night or something, but it really bothers me when places think they are too "cool" and "gritty" to be nice.
My parents enjoyed their food (shepard's pie and a burger with mushroom, swiss and bacon) and i enjoyed my Hippie Sandwich (turkey, cranberries, cream cheese, sprouts and lettuce) but the fries were soggy. We actually ordered the feta + rosemary fries, but they forgot to add it. (It is worth noting a nicer member of the staff came out with a $2 refund.) The beer selection is great and nicely presented at the bar. But unless I'm too tired to drive into town or something... the beer selection/food isn't worth the attitude.Listed in: HTOWN & surrounding areas

I love the people from California who have chimed in and one-starred this joint without ever setting foot in the place. Yelp should delete your accounts.
I went there yesterday. As in, actually ate/drank there. Here were my conclusions:
1. Trois Pistoles on draft = win
2. Amazing meatloaf sandwich
3. Incredibly kind/fun/attentive staff
This place has win written all over it. You'd know that if you actually lived in Houston. I can't wait to go back. -

I dropped in while the Channel 13 news van was there and doing interviews and boy was I surprised. I thought they had come to do a story on the Petrol Station serving Fieldstore Fire Chevre on their menu and helping to support our local farmers displaced by the Waller County wildfires, instead it was an overblown reaction to a yelp review.
As always the beer was good and especially from the Karbach guys, the new kids in town as far as brewing goes. I did not get to taste the Duck Confit with the fire chevre, but I was told by a couple of people who did order it, that it was a real deal for $10.3 Previous Reviews: Show all »

You could easily miss this place. It's hidden. It's hidden in a quiet neighborhood in the forgotten land between Downtown and the "greater OTL area." You don't need a secret handshake to find it... but a GPS and a cell phone will help.
This is a basic, comfortable, nice neighborhood bar. It's not a dive (as neighborhood bars tend to be). It's comfortable, simple, and low-key. They serve an impressive ROTATION of beers (i.e., there's no guarantee that they'll get more than one keg of that brew you love -- which means that lucky you gets to try something new). They're alleged to have good food... but it's all simple bar grub.
Lastly, the staff has always been pretty darned cool/laid-back/etc. Rather than get "all p1ssy" about it (as some reviewers have), plan ahead. Request that tab as far in advance as possible. Better yet, get "one more" and grab your tab, then. Meh -- I like it... even if does require a travel visa and border crossing to get there (hyperbole). -
Review from John S.
Come here *if * you love trying a large selection of draft beer, great burgers, and have a lot of time to kill (and don't mind sitting outside to do it).
Parking is along the street. There isn't enough seating. Curiously, people form into a one or two lines (which run the majority of the night). The food takes forever (as in one hour aka two or three beers later)....
...but it's totally worth it.
So bring friends, relax with a great selection of microbrews.
By the time my food came out, I was really hungry. Luckily, I ordered the Rancor burger... It comes fully loaded with two types of cheese, bacon, and an egg on top. Needless to say, it's piled pretty high and insane looking. I'm not sure if it's named after the man eating beast in star wars because because you look like a man eating beast as you eat it or because once you're done, you truly feel as if you've been devoured by one.
Anyhow, the Monday special is burger and a beer for $9 so I'll see ya there. -

Great concept, local feel, nice selection of beers and a few selective items on a menu.. However, for me the taste of food fell flat..
9 dollars and change for a backyard style burger with NO developed flavors and toped with a fried egg and bacon? For me the burger was a hodge-podge, it was a mile high (If you have the jaw of a snake this won't be a problem), fully dressed and a sloppy mess to eat.. More is not better in the burger world IMO, I could not pick up any well defined flavors to enjoy, it was all over the map and the burger itself was cooked too well done for me..
Also, I don't know who would be a fan of these burnt, oil logged fries.. They sorely needed to be blanched before being dropped, the oil temperature increased and cooked for a shorter amount of time.. What a mess..
I will say that the even though the food took a good long while to come out (even being a slow Saturday around 2:00pm) it was hot and everything seemed fresh..
Go for the beer, but skip the food, I've had better "horrible" pub food in the U.K.. -

For a native Pearlandinian-turned-Austonian-that-visits-north-o f-houston-while-all-friends-remain-far-south like myself, this place is awesome.
Its the only place that I have found to be not in ridiculous driving distance from us to meet up with friends, all the while being laid back and trendy.
They have a good selection of beers on tap and a food menu; I'm missing the coffee part I suppose? When you google it says "Petrol Station Coffeehouse". Anyway, I had a reuben when I was there last and it was awesome, better than I was expecting out of a reuben. The FI had a burger with a fried egg on it. It was HUGE! But he said it was good. The fries that came with didn't disappoint, either.
This will continue to be our meet-up place with old friends! -

Great Place! My husband and our friends love the selection of beers since they're local and the bartenders are so knowledgeable. The people are friendly and it's located in a neighborhood, not on a busy street or crowded strip center- it's perfect.
The food is fantastic! I've had two of their burger and they're great and way too big to finish. I always take at least half of it home. The atmosphere is relaxed and so laid back- it's perfect after a long week.
I highly recommend the Petrol Station! -

The Petrol Station, a neighborhood gas station transformed into a true beer lover's go-to place for those rare beers all on tap, is a great place to be. Being in a neighborhood really sets it apart from other pub-style places, in that it's nice and quaint with no drunken idiots running around, shouting and falling over (my best guess is because there are no lite beers available haha!).
This Station has a rotating beer selection on tap as they get them so as to inspire the idea of freshness. I love this. The selection is magnificent, and the bartenders are quite knowledgeable and even friendly enough to give you a sample if you're indecisive about which great beer to order.
The ambiance is great! I love having a fine beer outdoors on a nice, quiet patio, and this is the best place I have found in Houston to allow such a night. A small inside seating area is available, but the patio area is huge, tiered for some separation in seating, and is partially covered. Heaters are there as well for those chilly nights. I must mention also that they do serve food. As a cook, I'm terrified to see inside their 'kitchen' due to a serious lack of space, but the food produced was very good. I had a pulled pork sandwich with a Coca-cola BBQ sauce. Although the pork really needed to be pulled a bit more, it was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was just right and not overpowering. Someone may suggest the sandwich should be wrapped in paper for ease of eating, but I say the hell with that. It's BBQ! Get messy! Napkins are provided.
All in all, if you love good beer and a nice place to talk about said beer or a quaint place that promotes conversation among friends, this is the place to be. I can't wait to get back.
