Review from Loyal PetSmart C.

I found the Santa Cruz Petroglyph when searching for something to treat my BFF to for her birthday at the beginning of the year. We have become completely addicted and have brought in 10 MORE of our friends who have begun to go on THEIR own too.
It's the PERFECT place to sit and talk, catching up with your friends (or God forbid, your teenager) or just sitting there silently while you therapeutically paint away any stress you might have had when you walked in.
This summer, my friend and I each bought their all-summer-long pass for $24. It took care of our studio fees for all summer and gave us our first item at half-price. I chose to work on a platter as a gift that took me 5 visits (several hours each time) and with that pass, I went for several times without having to shell out a penny. It turns out to be a really inexpensive way to keep those creative juices flowing.
Another nice thing there is that when you feel like breaking for some lunch, you can leave all of your stuff there and take off to have lunch. We happen to really enjoy Betty's Eat In at the end of the street. After a nice leisurely lunch, we go back to right where we left everything. You're also welcomed to bring snacks in to munch while you work (which we do) and you're also welcomed to share with the VERY helpful and talented staff (which we ALSO do).
I think you can tell that I love it there...as a matter of fact, I need to figure out when I can go back again! I think it's been a little over a week since I have been....I think it's withdrawals! Too bad it's in Santa Cruz and I'M in Hollister! If it were here in town, I'd have to change my mailing address to Petroglyph! -

I have to admit, I am a total kid when it comes to arts and crafts. I love to get creative and especially messy....
So after a few glasses of wine later my man and I decided to come be kids for a while...
I chose a tall coffee mug, while my other chose a small coffee mug with a peace sign.. typical of him. I worked so hard on mine! I even tried to glue on a small fishy decal, which by the why, doesn't work... I later found that out after I glued it on, and it feel off right after.Sad face.
After all my hard work I got a call a few days later saying my mug broke in the kiln. The guy who called, said it wasn't fired properly the first time.. Just my luck.
Needless to say I still like this place and after getting a $25 credit, I am totally suckered to come back Dammit ..... -

We received our cups recently and they're amazing! They're glossy and the colors are the same as the swatches appeared! The service is great! Apparently my bf's cup had chipped in the kiln but they were nice enough to repair it! We can't even find where the chip was! We love our cups and they bring back such great memories from our date at Petroglyph each time we use them! We plan on going back!

Petroglyph is a great place to come in, relax and do your thing.
They have a great selection of ceramics, everything from mugs, plates and bowls to figurines and vases. They also have stencils, sponges, and all the paint you will need.
The atmosphere is great too, the tables are clean and set up when you come in.
I came here with my boyfriend on valentines day and we had a really good time.
Ask about their Fire card, it makes it so that you don't pay the studio fee after every two visits. -

When I lived in Santa Cruz, I used to come here with my ex-boyfriend. We would spend half the day working on stuff for gifts, plus have a nice time together. We'd split up the day with lunch somewhere close by, like the Walnut Cafe, or El Palomar.
I also used to love coming here with my sister, just painting away, chatting up a storm, and being creative together. It's so much fun! It's something I'd love to do with my future kids. Ha! Someday.... -

I love this place, but it is definitely spendy! All I could afford last time was a pencil cup haha. I use it as a real cup though. I can't saythat I have ever had a bad time here. It is very satisfying to paint your own ceramic piece. And there are stencils for me and the others how are less gifted at painting. The only reason I deduct a star is because it can get a little pricey. This is perfect for catching up with a friend though!

So this place is super chill. Everyday except for Tuesday, there is a $9.50 sitting fee + whatever the price of the item.
The service is always friendly. They are helpful.
It's very relaxing and just a great atmosphere. -

As I recall from my visit a few years ago, Petroglyph provides the kind of activity that's almost precisely designed for enjoying with a girlfriend. I mean, you could probably just up and go with buddies if you were like 12. You could probably also do it if you were a girl - of any age, really... But for some reason I just don't see me and three of my boys going to spend an afternoon paining ceramic frogs.
At any rate it's actually a rather entertaining, low-pressure opportunity to experiment with your visual arts skills. The system is straightforward: you walk in, you get the schpeel about pricing, and you pick out a plain, unpainted ceramic piece from the impressive library of base forms - frogs, plates, snakes, bears...other things which have shape. Then you sit down and in between trips to the paint racks to choose new colors, you enjoy yourself a nice afternoon of someone's company. It's really a pretty settling experience. -

I love this place. When I take my daughter here it's a few hours of uninterupted conversation where she forgets I'm her mom and she let's me into her teenage world. My husband and I have had a couple of dates here also and I have beautful serving bowls and platters that mark the occassion. Some may find it pricey, but it more than makes up for it with a wonderful staff (we love Heather) and selection. There is a sitting fee (on top of the price of the piece you're painting), but it covers unlimited visits should you really need the time to perfect your treasure.

AWESOME artsy place! Walk in and let your creativity loose. It is one of those places that you wish you could go to every day and make something new. The atmosphere is really friendly, and the prices are really reasonable. Why buy something you don't like, just go to petroglyph and make it yourself. Its a good place to go if you are in need to killing some time. I am soooo going back

I had a bad experience with the manager, and contacted the corporate office to talk with them about it. All of the people that I spoke to, from the office secretary to the president of the company, were extremely amiable and went out of their way to help me and make sure that I felt welcome returning. I am very appreciative of their attentiveness and willingness to talk. I left happy and will definitely go back!

Let your creative juices flow. The glazes are all low fire therefore whatever design you put on your piece, it will come out just like you painted. Walter and I have come here for various reasons. For one, because I wanted to and I made him come with me. Two, he and I made mother's day presents for our moms here. IT was a lot of fun. I like that you can stay a while and take your piece home with you if you wanted to continue some other time. There is a sitting fee in additon to whatever you pay for your piece. However, you an always pay a one time flat fee and have use of that area for as long as it takes you to produce all your pieces. Trick & Tip: pay your sitting fee once. take your piece home and bring it back some other time. before you leave either start another piece that you can contiue to work on...or keep on taking your piece home and bringint it back so you can keep on glazing it...however long it takes you. Heather is an awesome worker there. She has a lot of good ideas.

I'm an avid pottery painter, and I had a great time painting here! They have tons of different items to paint, from the basic mug to special dishes and boxes. The supplies were all in great shape and there were plenty to use - paintbrushes, stencils, pencils, etc. The staff was very friendly and explained to me in detail the use of carbon transfer paper (which I didn't end up using). I was also here on a Monday afternoon, so it was very empty and quiet which probably made it a better experience...not a lot of people/kids making noise! Something I really liked was the short turnaround time for glazing...usually you have to wait a week, once I had to wait several weeks for my items...but here it only takes 3 days! So quick. The prices are also reasonable, for my big bowl the total cost was $30, not bad at all. Plan a lot of time as you will spend longer on your work than you think you will...I was here for a solid three hours. Definitely will come back again for my next project!
