Review from Sarah P.
I love getting creative, so I came here with my boyfriend on New Year's to paint ourselves a new food plate for our "portion-controlled" meals of 2012!
There was a New Year's special price: $2.12 for everyone as the sit-in fee, so we got lucky.
So when you first walk in here, you basically pick out a ceramic piece you want to paint, they have a wide selection from holiday ornaments to plates, cups to teapots, vases to piggy banks, even just little figurines for decoration!
Then you grab a seat and go grab your tools (paints & brushes) and let your creativity run free & wild! They also have a big selection of paints as well as the kind that dries with a bumpy texture to add more fun to your pieces!
Once you're done, you take it to the counter to pay for the sitting fee as well as the price of the piece you painted, they can range between about $10-$50!
They will give you a time and date to come pick up your piece and you have 30 days to do so! It's definitely a fun date experience as well as a treat for your kids!Listed in: Cute places to go on dates!

I spent a few hours here for a pre-birthday event. This is how my visit occurred:
Walked in. Asked my friend (who had been here before) what we're supposed to do to get seated. She didn't remember so we just grabbed blank pottery on the wall, sat down, and figured everything out ourselves. No one had even approached us and asked how we were doing or if we had any questions (like the website says they would! At least, for beginning}. We finished up, took our pottery to the cashier, and then paid for everything there and got our receipt.
They clean up after you so we didn't need to do any cleaning afterwards. We carried a bunch of different paints to our table, and a lot of different brushes.
SO EXPENSIVE! I guess that's just how it is for them to make money for rent and shiz, but by golly, it's EXPENSIVE! Pottery is Made in Taiwan- the average price is about $18 PLUS sitting fee of appx. $10 for adults. It ended up being about $55 for me and Boyfriend's sitting fee and pottery.
We have to come back in two business days at 10am to pick up our pieces from being put in the kiln.
Eeeeehhhhhh.... I wouldn't come back here unless they do reduce their prices- it's fun, but def not worth that much to me. -

This is the only Petroglyphs I've been to before and I've come here a couple times. The other day I came herewith some buddies to paint a piggy bank I got for free a while back. When I asked the staff if I could paint it, they said I could not - I had to buy something from the store to paint. I think that's just ridiculous considering I am still paying the studio fee of $9.50 or whatever it is. I don't know where I am going to paint my poor piggy now :(
Anyways, I ended up choosing a small sugar jar or whatever it was for a preposterous $19. I made it into a doggie treat jar for my pup. We came here around 8 PM and they closed at 10 PM so they told us we could come back another day and finish painting without charging an extra studio fee. I guess that was nice.
The staff weren't very friendly though, they really didn't do much at all except for tell me I couldn't paint my pig, and then ring us up to pay. I probably will come back here though because they have this new thing where you get 3 stamps for every time you come, and then the 4th time you come the studio fee is free. I come about once or twice every year. -

I spent three full days here (totaling 20 hours) making a plate for my friends' wedding and interacted with 6 or 7 staff members. All were extremely courteous and helpful.
The first day I was there, a staff member brought out a special paint brush for me (that isn't normally set out for fear it'd be damaged by kids) as she saw me struggling with my project. It turned out to be a lifesaver. Notable employees I interacted with were Sara the manager and Ana.
The selection of paints offered here are far superior to any other ceramic studio I've been to. The vintage circus-themed plate I painted required muted tones, all of which I found at Petroglyph's.
$9 studio fee covers any and all supplies used for your project; I did not have to repay each time I went in. I will definitely return, and look forward to seeing their remodel completed.
P.S. Apparently each month they highlight a technique, this month's being "etching". Take a look at pieces near the sink for inspiration. -

Pottery painting used to be my favorite weekend activity as a kid, so boyfriend and I and some friends decided to give it a shot. We drove 25 minutes to Petroglyph because of the great reviews, but I can't say we were overwhelmed.
The best part about the experience was that even though we were running seriously late, the studio didn't give away our table. Oh, and the paint comes in little bottles that you can take back to your table rather than the big ones.
Other than that, they have a fairly limited selection of pieces available to paint, the brushes, stamps, and stencils are a little rundown, and the staff was definitely not friendly (on multiple occasions).
On the bright side, it wasn't quite as expensive as I was expecting, and our pieces will be ready in 3 days instead of the usual 7. I'm excited to see how they turn out. But I probably won't be back because 1) it's far away and 2) I didn't entirely enjoy my experience.
Oh! And their business page on Yelp says that they have a check in offer going on, but I don't think they've got it set up right because I definitely didn't get the offer when I checked in.Listed in: Date Night Around the Bay

I dared to tread in here with twin 3 year olds in attempt to create cool gifts for the grandmas and everything went a lot smoother than I expected! The employee was very helpful in getting us started and explaining the process.
We ended up getting salad plates and I let the kids just go nuts with the paints and brushes. I can't wait to see how crazy they turn out!
I was grateful that they only charged the sitting fee for the kids because assisting them didn't give me any time to sit down and paint (other than picking up a brush to make sure that the little tiny spots on the lip of the plate were filled in).
I'd definitely go again. People who work here are friendly, the place was clean and mid-week it wasn't too crowded. Great for all ages (as long as they can operate a paint brush). -
Review from Vicky L.
This was a great place for us to have a date afternoon. We went in there, picked out the items and got to work painting to our heart's content. The service here is pretty hands off, they go around to show you the various pieces to pick from and then they leave you alone so you can chit chat/relax or just work on your item.
Reservations are highly recommended especially on the weekends. We came back a few times and one time brought my cousin and her boyfriend. The paint is a lot more pastel-y and fainter but fires up brightly and beautifully. The pricing can be kinda high since you pay for a studio fee and also a fee for the pottery but it's a good investment if you have a full day to relax and paint.
Love the location as we walked around Los Gatos to find a quick bite to eat before heading back in and painting. The plus side is that they allow you to bring food in! :) -

The staff while not proactive, was very friendly when approached. If you need help they are there, if you don't ask then you don't get any help. I don't mind that at all. The place was crowded (all tables full) but there were enough supplies for everyone and they kept up with the turning over of the tables. It's expensive for sure, but it's fun.

We came here and it was mostly empty though very clean. We looked around, received a friendly tour of tools, colors, etc and went to work. We thought we'd be able to do atleast 2 items but we only did 1 despite the length of time we spent there. We now have a little fishy candle holder which should last longer than our own bodies.
It is a great place to bring kids and has a very positive atmosphere.
It is also a great place to take a date if youre looking for an interesting place to take someone significant to you. -

Came back for the bf's birthday to spend a few hours painting......He's quite the accomplished painter. :)
1. Reserved tables with cute little placard;
2. Staff working that day, Manny, was SUPER helpful and nice;
3. You get to bring in whatever items you want to nosh on while painting...yes that includes adult beverages :) We brought in some bubbly and desserts.

So you want something to do on a lazy, rainy afternoon or evening? Bring some coffee, a friend or two and get ready for a relaxing good time. When my friend brought me here to celebrate my birthday I wasn't sure how well I would do, since I haven't done arts and crafts since kindergarten. We had a great time and enjoyed the usual girl talk over some paint and pottery.
The atmosphere here is calm and inviting and the staff here is really helpful.
There is a sitting fee per person which is around $9, once you settle in, you choose your piece. There are bowls, plates, picture frames, flower pots etc., I even saw someone painting a garden gnome. Then you are ready to dive in.
When you're done, the staff will collect your art and send it to the kiln. A few days later your masterpiece is ready for pick up.
What a great place to make personalized gifts or have an impromptu get together with friends. -

My niece (8 yrs), nephew (6 yrs), and I really love this place!
If you go there for just one session, you pay the price of one sitting fee per person (2.- cheaper for kids than the mentioned adult price), as well as your pottery (ranges from 10.-/15.- upwards). Paint, firing, and service is included in the price.
However, you can return and continue painting on that piece of pottery multiple times, until you are done and ready to have it fired. This is all included in the initial price. We often return 3-4 times to paint on one object--that way the kids learn to dedicate themselves to a project, plus we save on fees.
For the summer we all made use of Petroglyph's season pass: We each paid around 40.- (one-time fee for the season pass). Now we have the sitting fee waived, since about March, through October, and only pay for the individual pieces of pottery.
Since months now we have been going to Petroglyph in Los Gatos on a regular basis (about once or twice a week), it only costing us about 20.- per person/month, and always experiencing a very helpful staff on duty.
Update: Returned in March '08 with pieces of pottery that we had started to paint in October '07! No problem, they still knew us, and we got to finish our projects (no additional fees or anything, just sat down and painted, didn't pay a dime that day). So the policy that you can come back to continue your work on started projects, without having to pay anything extra, really works long-term, too! I'd give them another extra star if I hadn't already given them 5!Listed in: Places for Kids

Pros: not busy during weekdays, easy to jump right in and start painting, good selection of paints, fair selection of bisques, small movie cave for kids who need a little distraction, positive vibe, quick service, on main street close to food and desserts practically next door, pieces ready when promised and perfectly glazed and fired.
Cons: most of the interesting or engaging pieces are well over $20, so be prepared to spend a *lot* more than you were expecting; parking; kid fee is a bit steep for the little amount of time spent painting. -

I really like the concept of the place, but the customer service is horrible!
I had the b-day that Alysha was speaking about . I told all of the girls that were working behind the counter -that this was my first time here and I don't know what to do. You would think that ONE of them would have gone over to my tables and give my guests and I a brief run down of what to do....but nah. No one helped nor did they seemed to give a rat's ass about us.
As I said nice concept but horrible customer service! -

We had reserved a table for a birthday group, and they were very nice. If you bring a lot of people, they only charge you $5 person for the sitting fee.
It was that really hot day in August -- you know, the one where it was over 100 degrees? Well, try being in a place that has the firing ovens on. It was hot as hell in there. It is hardly ever that hot here -- but just avoid this place on days over 90 degrees.
We had a lot of fun. It is pricey to do these crafts as you know you can just purchase what you are looking at for a lot less. But, it is more about enjoying your company, relaxing, and making your own stuff. -

From coinbanks, mugs to even the seasonal tree ornaments one can come here to decorate to their hearts content.
The place is very spacious and the pieces are conveniently placed on shelves for you to choose from. The creative process is pretty self explanatory; swipe your item with a damp sponge and paint away. This place is pretty good in piece selection, paints and brushes. The walls are also helpful by showing you all kinds of painting techniques as well.
Petroglyph is great in passing time, letting your creativity flow and creating a piece that is truly one of a kind. The pieces may be a tad bit pricey, but how often do you get a chance to decorate handmade ceramics in your life? -
Review from Linnea E.
Good fun, but expensive. I've also had them ruin a piece I made, which was so disappointing! They tried to "fix" it, and ended up only making it worse. We like to go once in awhile after a good dinner in Los Gatos. It's a nice change from the typical dinner/movie date night.

As a person who has always considered myself artistically challenged, Petroglyph is the perfect place for me to express my creativity in less drastic ways. Albeit, I went with a fool proof ceramic piggy bank (which I managed to mess up), but it was nonetheless a great experience!
You pay a studio fee which includes use of paint and paint brushes...as well as the price of the item you choose to paint. It is totally worth it to see he finished product: your own work of art!
Petroglyph is the perfect adventure to take with a group of your closest friends--the only downfall of the whole shebang is having to wait a week or two to pick up your finished product.
All in all, definitely recommend for a fun time! -

Came here with the girls last weekend for a belated birthday celebration.
The studio fee was $9.95 which included sponge, paint, brushes, etc. You just have to pick out an item off of the wall and pay for the item.
I WAS going to paint a cereal bowl for someone but decided to paint a purse-shaped jewelry box ($14) instead. It was extremely relaxing and therapeutic. We had all the paint and brushes that we could use.
After about a couple of hours, I handed my jewelry box and was told I can pick it up two days later. I picked it up yesterday and it turned out so cute! It's a great place if you want to make something special for that someone special and have fun in the process.
The whole day was way too much fun. I can't wait to go back again... -

I've been going to Petroglpyh for over 10 years. Although I haven't been for a while.
The thing I love about Petroglyph is that it gives you a chance to be creative, there is no right or wrong way. It's a relatively relaxing way to spend a few hours chatting and catching up with either one person or a small group. Petroglyphs are suitable for a range of ages from kids up to adult, either separate or mixed. Be aware there are many breakable items all over the place.
Most items come to price of under $30, including both the studio fee and the item you are painting. There are a range of things to choose from such as tiles, different shaped bowls, mugs, containers, plates or sculptures. All the supplies and paints are provided. The stack of art books can inspiration. Or do as I do and peek at what other people are working on. The many advanced samples around the studio really show what someone can do with the supplies and materials provided.
There are coffee shops near by, so it's easy to go grab a warm drink on a cold day. Or a cold drink on a warm day. -

It's about $10 for all you can use paint and glazing plus whatever the cost of the pottery you pick out. Sure, the pottery can get expensive, but can you really put a price on handmade pieces?!? I think not!
I've been here twice and both times have been fun. This last time, the boyfriend and I went at about 4pm only to find out they were packed and couldn't take another customer for about an hour. We left and came back around 8pm, when it was pretty much empty except for a few teeny boppers and another couple. The lady was sort of helpful but pretty much left us up to our own sense. I picked out a sushi plate that was about $28 and he picked out a snack bowl that was around $20.
Then we sat in almost complete silence and painted for over an hour.
I was told I could pick up the pieces 2 days later, which is later than I expected, but not horrible. For a grand total of $60+, this place not only helped pass 2 hours, but left us with souvenirs too! -

Los Gatos, CA
I've been coming here occasionally for the last fifteen years. I especially enjoyed it when I was ten or eleven, but I remember thinking it was SO expensive. lol. I still think it is a little expensive, but I do love to paint and it is so nice how they provide all the paint, brushes and sponges, PLUS they bake/glaze it which always makes it look beautiful.
I was here most recently at about one month ago, and I painted a mug with Japanese/Chinese kanji with cherry blossoms. However, I had THE hardest time thinking of something to paint, especially with all that blank canvas and not being in my creative element for awhile. So I would recommend if you plan on painting a plate or something, do a little research for some ideas, perhaps bring in a design you like, and vary on that.
I also got REALLY hungry, and low blood sugar which makes me sooo tired, because I think we were there for about three to four hours (surprisingly long) so I would recommend having/bringing a snack, or making a short run to Pizza my heart down the street or something.
Overall it was fun and when I picked up the mug a week later it was beautiful and everyone loves it. :)
Tip - a few people had problems opening the door, one man even thought they were closed for a private party. the door says pull, so read the sign and dont try to push it open. hehe. -

Got an hour or so to spare? Looking for a creative nook? Well look no further for you have found it! xD
Theres a range of different sized and shaped mugs, cups, plates, piggy banks...even figurines to choose from. Once you choose and take a seat, a friendly employee comes by and gives you tips about patterns, textures, and paint colors.
Compared to the other pottery painting places, Petroglyph has a decent range of items to paint. If you start your project and run out of time, don't worry because you can bring it back to finish some other time. I think the sitting charge is $9-$10/person. All the potteries are priced differently so it will depend on what you want to paint. It usually takes like 3 days for them to have the finished product fired and ready for you to pick up.
Great for large parties of children for events like birthdays. I would give them a call to reserve a table if your going to go with a big group ;) -

I love this place! I come here almost every week after work to relax and be creative. The girls are super friendly and remember me each time I come in. I can spend hours in here and paint and paint and paint, and they will watch my stuff while I go get a slice of pizza. I take lots of bottles of paint (well, one of 14 colors or so) and use four or five sponges, and I use a million different pallets. But, the crew never makes me feel bad about it. They still insist on me leaving my mess BUT I feel bad so I always put away the paint. Rosie and Chandra have to be my favorites of the people who work there. These girls are helpful, outgoing, and genuine. I have become a pretty frequent customer, and they will say hello or ask me about whatever projects I am working on.
I am super impatient, and easily irritated, and there are often little kid parties on the days I come in. Like groups of 10 or so 6-11 year old parties. And I cannot stand the noise they make! But, I will suffer through it, even when the moms are hanging around completely unaware of whats going on. They will block the path to the blow dryer, chat loudly while there kids are even louder (in a semi small space), and leave huge messes behind. The girls working here remain helpful and friendly with these obnoxious groups and they are great with the kids!
For me, this place has a very personal feel and I love that!!!
Keep in mind that it is a studio you pay to use. The pieces are on the wall for you to select from. You pick your paints and brushes and do your thing. If you need extra help or tips or if its your first time, you should approach one of the people. Now, I know that doesn't sound like great customer service, (WHICH I AM VERY PARTICULAR ABOUT AND I HAVE SUPER HIGH STANDARDS), but this place is more for you (or a friend) to work independently. -

this is a sweet date place. i came here on one of my first dates with the boy. i picked this place on a whim sine he told me i had to decide what to do. i had been wanting to try this place for a while now and thought this would be perfect. let's just say, he wasn't that enthusiastic to paint ceramics. i think he did silent kicking and screaming in his head.
once we got there, we had no idea what to do. the guy working there told us to pick out the pieces we wanted to paint and just sit down and start. how simple! i decided to paint a bowl. the boy painted a cupcake. they had a variety of things to pick from. you could pint dishes, cups, bowls, penguins, cows, etc. there was also a little station where all the paints ans brushes were. in front of the paints were tiles that showed exactly what the colors were going to look like as a final result.
it takes a while to gt the painting down and the way you like it. i can easily spend around 2 hours here trying to perfect my stuff. once you're done, you give the people who work here your stuff. they ring you up. tell you when to pick up your goods and you're off. the goods are usually ready a few days later and they look pretty spiffy. all nice and shiny. depending on your color combos and the way you paint it, your ceramic has the ability to look absolutely gorgeous or hideous...it's up to you. -

Seriously disappointed with my first experience. Took my daughter and niece and they had a nice time. We were not greeted when we came in and the place was empty. I had hoped to get some instruction for the kids but the helper was to busy doing her own art and talking to her friend. For what they charge they should be helpful.

I really didn't like the customer service at this place at all. We had a party of nine people for a birthday party. I figured that with that many people, the customer service would be really good and helpful. Boy, I was wrong about that. None of the girls who worked there did not give us an orientation on what to do. I really hate the fact that I had to dig around the freakin store to see what kind of stuff I could use to paint my bowl with.

I had a day off and had a gift card. So I tried Petroglyph out. I have been to one other ceramic place before in PA. (it turned out nice). The girls were busy painting their own things, but after a bit I was helped to get started. After I was done I was told to pick it up in a week (PA was only 3 days). When I picked it up she show me quickly and wrapped it up. I got home and noticed the glazing was no done right, it was like they dipped it with tongs once and left the marks from the tongs. The place in PA must have been dipped twice, because the glaze was great . If I were to get a gift card again I would sell it, I wouldn't regift.

A really really nice way to spend an afternoon. I wouldn't describe myself as artistic, or in that case, talented when it comes to painting yet I LOVE PETROGLYPH. They have a good selection of pottery to pain and the staff is attentive and helpful. The other bad thing I have to say is that my mother was looking for a particular piece and they said that everything that they had was already out. But then 10 minutes before we left, the same exact lady who told us that was restocking the shelf with different pieces. uhhhh ok? But other than that.. Good time.. Good place to throw a birthday for all ages.

Went with a group of 6, and we painted a range of ceramic objects. Beer stein, salt and pepper shaker, serving dish, chalice, popcorn bowl.... They have a pretty good range of things to paint and a pretty good selection of paints to choose from, they have 'bumpy' paint too.
The place is cute, spacious, clean, simple. Just like what I had imagined a pottery painting place should look like.
As for service is concerned, we did have a group of 6, and we were all first timers there, and I think they were aware of that. I guess you have to seek help if you want it. if you don't know what to do, just ask, and they'll tell you. I didn't get any attitude; I think they just treat it as a place where you are free to use what you want. There signs everywhere to use as a guide... I saw that there were stencils to use as well, also a hair drier for quick drying if the paint is running on your pottery. There is a huge painted ceramic plate where all the paints are. It's basically designed as a pie chart of the different techniques you can use to design the pottery. I was just standing there staring at the dish and a girl came up to me and asked me if I needed help, and told me how to use those different techniques such as using masking tape, etching, bumpy paint, etc. seems pretty straight forward. I didn't really need any of the info, I just asked for it for future reference, b/c I was just there painting my hamburger and fries salt and pepper shaker.....
So the reason why I chose the salt and pepper shaker to paint is:
(1) one of the cheaper things to paint... less than $15. WHAT A STEAL!!! Not.
(2) On top of my 'cheap' salt and pepper shakers, you have to add on $9.75 sitting fee
(3) Easy to paint, and it actually takes a lot longer than you think, I didn't plan on coming back anytime soon, so I went for a straight shot. You have to realize when painting, you'll probably want to paint a couple of coats on it if you want non-transparent color.
Well, I get to pick up my shakers later this week, so we'll see how it comes out then.
-1 star since personally, I found it more expensive than I had thought pottery painting should be... I don't know what the industry standard is though. -

I like the concept of these places. I haven't been to one in years and I had a good time. And I liked my little cupcake box that I made. That being said, I've always found them to be over priced and Petroglyph really takes the cake in this aspect. The unpainted items are expensive enough but on top of that you pay a $9.75 sitting fee?? Ridiculous. Suddenly my cupcake box costs $25. Rip off.

Yesterday, a bunch of us girls went to Petroglyph to celebrate a birthday. We wanted to do something intimate and personal, and not something we have already done, so we ruled out dinner, clubbing, bar hopping and just partying in general. We thought it would be a nice change from the usual to come to a place to relax and get a little creative.
So the 9 of us blindfolded the birthday girl and took her here. For most of us, it was a first --- we had never been there before. I thought it was cool that they allow you to bring outside food/drink. So we set up shop on an extra table and created a spread with different finger foods and guava cake (Thank you, Aki's!). And since it was a girls day out, Mimosas were a must!!!
We had about 2 hours total, so we got to choose a piece that we wanted to personalize. They had so much to choose from --- different shaped jewelery boxes, bowls, plates, platters, vases, gnomes, figurines to name a few. Then, Matt, our host gave us a little run-through of what to do/different technique methods which lasted about 2 minutes. Then, we picked our paints and worked away.
It was not only fun, but extremely theraputic. The 2 hours flew by so fast! It was so nice to try something different and low-key. I can't wait to pick up my bowl! (The way it works is: after you're done, they glaze it and fire it up, and you pick it up the following Tuesday)
So since it was a birthday, they threw in a complimentary plate, which we all signed. (Cheezy, I know, but hey, we were kids again...)
We all had a blast. I'm sure the mimosas helped, LOL, but thank you Petroglyph! -

I was looking at doing a couple of projects at Petroglyph with my kids. I was looking on Yelp to see if the Petroglyph in Los Gatos or Willow Glen got better marks. I had been to the Willow Glen one before. Reading through Yelp, in it someone mentioned something called "Color Me Mine", I though what is this? I went looking at the 2 Petroglyph's and to find Color Me Mine. We went to Color Me Mine first, walking in about 8 PM, was greeted quickly and asked if I had any questions. Talk about helpful, they answered all questions cheerfully and patiently. The business looked very nice, nice selection, attractive work area. Then went to the 2 Petroglyph's, talk about a 100% difference, no one greeted me ,even when I tried to look lost and wonder around. It seemed like the employees didn't want to make eye contact. Their selection of items to create and paint were very limited compared with Color Me Mine. My 12 year old daughter was with me and felt the same way.
Like I said I have been to Petroglyph before and enjoyed it, but my impression of Color Me Mine was a lot more favorable. On this visit to the Petroglyph I should give 2-3 stars, but gave the benefit of the doubt and gave them 3.
BTW ended up going to CMM the next day, you can see my review there. -

Hate spending the $$$$ here but enjoy the painting. The help could be more helpful. As I'm not an artist nor do I have a creative bone in my body, I would appreciate some ideas and directions from the employees who should be serving the needs of the customers.

I just spent about $25 on a birthday present I know will be my roommates best birthday present! He has a daughter and I painted a large mug, wrote, "Happy Birthday Daddy!!" and put her handprints on it. It is a small fee to pay for a present you know will be memorable and meaningful for the recipient.
I rate this place 5 stars because the lady there, I think her name is Sarah, was amazing! Sarah, if I got your name wrong I'm sorry! She is the assistant manager there.
Anyways, she was UNBELIEVABLY helpful! She was so accommodating and helped me with my deadline. Basically... I needed my mug to be ready by tomorrow because that's when his birthday is. She bumped me up in line so that I could have it ready for tomorrow. She helped me in any way that she could so that I could have a really good piece. As I was painting with a time constraint, she helped me with that as well.
She is amazing. This place is awesome. It is such a great idea and so fun. I had so much fun that I want to go back this Tuesday for the special they run!
If I could give this place 10 stars I would!
Thank you so much!!!
