Petrillos is a local place that I frequent when I am craving pizza or italian food at a reasonable price.
The pepperoni that they use on the pizza has a bit of a kick to it so I love that and their other menu dishes are good as well.
My favorite dish is their lasagna which comes in a hot dish with plenty of cheese draping over the sides, delicious!!! Their house bread is their own special recipe and is also scrumptious...
I would have given 5 stars if not for the one server who is possibly the worst on this planet. This server stops and has long chats with any ear she can bend and always forgets to bring drinks, refills, orders, etc. All the tables that were assigned to her look as surprised as we do because it's almost unbelievable. At first I thought we were on some type of candid camera show but unfortunately we weren't and it's happened every time we have gone there. All the other servers are very professional and attentive.
I'm going to be back there soon and if she is gone or has improved her inconsiderate ways, I will post the last star...
I liked their specialty pizza, but it was so overloaded with toppings! It wasn't a bad thing, but I could only eat one slice because it was so huge. Next time I think I'll get just a pepperoni and bell peppers pizza to really get a good idea of the cheese and sauce.
I really liked the crust, plus the quality of the ingredients was 100x better than Dominoes or Pizza Hut. Their Italian sausage was one of the best sausages I've had on a pizza, and I've eaten a lot of pizza!
I grew up in this 'hood and I havent eaten a Petrillo's pizza for at least 10 years! I remember my best friends mom would order us pizza back when we were in high school.
So I came back to the area not too long ago and on a whim stopped by to order a pizza. Not much has changed and that's a good thing! GENEROUS toppings, crust is perfect--not too hard, not that chewy and GOBS of cheese--you can't go wrong with extra cheese.
I was so use to eating over-priced 'gourmet' pizza back in the bay area and forgot how down-to-earth, simple pizza tasted like. Great prices too. The medium can feed up to 4 people and for 3 toppings was only 21 bucks!
I had a slice of the their special at a potluck once so decided to check out the restaurant. We had the Petrillo's special, toppings are similar to what a Costco combo slice tastes like. Although the toppings were delish, the crust was way to bready and thick for me. I barely touched 1/3 of each slice since it was all bready crust, which I usually like. Otherwise you'll get full pretty quickly. Our waitress didn't seem to happy to be working and the minestrone was forgettable. Good pizza if you're in the mood for some serious toppings and thick crust style pizza, just ok for me, too bready.
No comparison to Costo,Pizza Hut,Domino's.This pizza is in a class by itself. It is wonderful! We had the special and it was special! The combination dinners are a good buy.Soup and salad and two entrees.Everyone leaving the place had a take away bag,and the food is just wonderful the next day.The lasagna was so tasty, the eggplant parm was one of the best I've ever had.
Enough though the restaurant was busy the service was very good.
Amazing restaurant!
Only negative is the parking,we had to park a block away but after all that food,we needed to walk!
The pizza here is amazing.
I actually ordered a petrillo's pizza with fresh mushrooms after raving about their pizza and my disappointment for their canned mushroom even though they used fresh mushrooms in their other dishes (I did this over the counter). I think i just really got lucky. With that said, it was one of the best pizzas i ever ate.
A lot of people don't know this, but you can ask them to make the crust of the pizza the way you want it. I usually get a thin crust Petrillo's pizza which is delicious, I yet to try the extra thick crust..
Not to be confused with Mama Petrillo's in Temple City...
Very friendly staff, very well stocked pizza and I was literally full after eating two slices. Can't really ask for more. Very nice atmosphere too, especially for the price.
I thought I had already reviewed Petrillo's but when I created an overrated list and wanted to include it, realized I hadn't
so my BF grew up in San Gabriel and he, his family and lots of friends LOVE LOVE LOVE Petrillo's I've heard the hype from lots of other people too and I have to say I'm just not impressed
not bad but not great either
K Bye
It's better than 3.0 stars but not good enough for a 4.0 I say it's in the middle between them..
My four friends and I ordered a medium (16'') of the Petrillo's specialty, which was $21. It was HUGE. The toppings include salami, pepperoni, thin slices of green peppers, mushrooms, garlic, huge balls of sausages, and blah blah blah. It was A LOT of topping. It seems almost impossible to eat it without a knife and fork-- which i always eat pizza with a knife and fork so it wasn't a problem for me. :)) The bread of the pizza was not that great though. It was sooo hard-- made it very hard to cut with a knife. I guess they only focus on the toppings, not so much the bottom of the pizza.
We were all soooo hungry when we arrived but all of us were so full after just one slice. Maybe it was because of the bread and water before the pizza but still... crazy. and trust me.. we girls eat A LOT A LOT. (By the way.. the bread is free for two rounds and after two baskets it's $2 each. lame, huh?)
It's a cute family restaurant.
PIZZA - PIZZA - PIZZA
It has been around since 1954. It is the Thickest and fattest Pizza you will ever see! The medium that I picked up yesterday felt like it weighed 5 pounds plus. The large?? You better bring an extra pair of hands. The dough is chewy and brushed with olive oil. I have never eaten in the restaurant, but I hear that it is an even better experience than take out. This to me is the best old school style pie in Southern California. It isn't deep dish or New York style, just fat and full of toppings. The medium Petrillo's specialty is $21.00 plus tax. It comes with Sausage, Pepperoni, salami, green peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Lots of cheese of course. It should feed 4 hungry people without any problems with left overs.
When I want to fill my fat belly with pie. This is were I come. I have been here hundreds of times over the last 20 years. I had not been here in a few months. Always forgetting to review them. I try to never review a place until I have eaten there lately. Like every time before, Petrillo's didn't disappoint!
Give them a try!
Cheers!
When my mom bought one of these family sized pizza's from Petrillo's I just laughed because it's a HUGE box being carried by a 5'1" Asian woman D: When the pizza arrived there was always fanfare because we knew good eats was only seconds away. Loaded with toppings a few slices would be an entire meal. Plus you don't feel that bad because it's always loaded with veggies to balance out the cheese and the meat....mmm.
It is a little expensive when you compare it to chain joints like Pizza Hut or Papa John's but the pizza here is in a totally different class.
I've visited this location twice within the past 6 months and my experience with their pizza was not good. I've read all these good reviews about the pizza so that's why I've made 2 separate pizza orders at different times. I ordered the family size humongo white pizza and the crust was really HARD! I don't mean crispy but hard! I get the thick crust but this was not good at all.
I will give them accolades for being innovative in toppings. A lot of places will not have such diversity in their pizza toppings other than cheese and bell peppers. I really couldn't eat anymore of the pizza because it involved so much chewing my jaw was sore.
I'm not coming back for the pizza. :( I thought I've found my Domino's/Pizza Hut alternative. big sigh. oh, hello costco.....
I'm a fan of this place for sure because the mozzarella sticks are BOMB. This is a must-get appetizer!
The service was so-so and prices were a little on the expensive side but the food was good. We got the signature pizza and it was filling. We took more than half home. They are happy to box the pizza for you.
It's sort of one of those old hole-in-the-wall places so it's a cool place to check out if you're just a visitor to socal.
If you ever find yourself in San Gabriel or Glendora you gotta have some Petrillos Pizza. Their pizza is always loaded; they arent stingy with the toppings. Get the "Petrillos Special" -Its great for get togethers and their "Large" is big enough to feed a small country!
Only down side is that they dont deliver and you may want to call in your order about 25 minutes before you get there; they get fairly busy. But its great food and friendly service every time!
PIzza Perfection! The crust is nice and firm. It has a good texture and is not oily at all. I will probably never try pizza hut again. I got the small and 3 slices filled me up pretty quickly.
I simply got the pepperoni and I ate this thing at my car while the security guard at the bank watched me in bewilderment. I hurried home to the Laker Game and saved the rest of the pie for this momentous occasion. There are a couple other places I prefer over Petrillo's Paisano's in Hermosa is one of them but that would be thin crust.
I must admit I have not enjoyed a thick crust pizza in a long time. Couple with the thick but nickels sized pepperonis that were burnt to a crisp perfection. I will not hesitate to give this place its props. I will come back to try the combo/special FO SHO!
The pizza here is awesome!!! It's one of the better pizza places that I have been to. I came here with some friends for dinner. We ordered a medium specialty pizza, chicken marsala pasta, and chicken wings. All of it was SSSOOOOO GOOODDDD....especially the pizza. The service was good as well as the prices. Definitely will be back for my pizza craving fix. See you Yelpers there sometime.
Have a love hate feeling for the place. Service at the restraunt has been shoddy in the past. Take out is well take out... hand them money get a pizza which is fine with me.
My love hate is about the pizza... and the consensus is among my family that you have to eat their pizza when its hot and fresh from the oven. Cold pizza or next day pizza or few hours later is going to be heart burn city. Could be the peperonit? Angelos pizza doesnt seem to be so unsettling but Petrillos has to be consumed when Angelos gets boring. Antipasto salads leave much to be desired. I would really rate this place 3 and half.
Mmmm tasty,
say it with me, mmmmmmm tasty!
Went for a b-day dinner, company, service and food was great.
big ass pizza's, beware of the large.
$5.00 dollar corkage fee + 2 bottles =$10.00 equates to friends and I happy.
If I had some business sense...and some capital, i'd open a Jenny Craig franchise next door to this place.
Sitting in a booth inside of Petrillo's feels like you are in between the red line and the purple as they speed by...or in the middle of a stampede. People that come to Petrillo's know how eat...they have practiced....significantly. Their bodies reflect it. The food is good and heavy...it is for the heavy...and the heavy eat it...nothing can stop them...wild horses couldnt drag them away...it is a good sign.
The pizza was made very well...heavy on the cheese, a little too saucy for my taste but the sauce was flavored quite well. Crust is thick and flavorful as well.
Service was ok...hostess was a little cold but who really cares
Waitress was a round girl that broke into a sweat each time she lifted a limb...but as long as i didnt see a droplet hit my vittles she is free to stuff her face to her hearts desire.
Petrillo's is my pizza of choice when choosing to spend a little extra money on dinner but still wanting to eat pizza. (does that make sense or am I a complete fucking retard?)
I like that the girl you've got answering phones is nice.
I like that your menu is easy to understand and order off of.
I like that you're 2 minutes from my dad's office.
I like that it was easy to find, you've got a big sign, and street parking is a breeze.
I like that your store is not immaculate, but clean.
I like that your pizza is moderately priced ($12.70 for 12" sausage and mushroom)
I like that the girl who took my order is nice in person as well.
I like that the pizza took as long as she said it would, and not longer.
I like that you take credit cards.
I like that the crust was crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and didn't kill my mouth (that's what she said)
I like that the cheese was ooey and gooey
I like that the Italian sausage was crumbled by hand
I DON'T like that you used canned mushrooms.
You could've had 4 stars.... but you just had to do it, didn't you Petrillo
GENEROUS PIZZAAASSS! Petrillo's pizzas are so good and filling. My bf and I usually order an entree and a small pizza and we never manage to finish them. There are a variety of toppings to choose from and they're all so very fresh! I usually get mushroom, pepperoni, and sausage. Their chicken fettuccine alfredo is also very good; it has this creamy toffee taste to it.
Did pick up last night. Medium Speciality Pizza (garlic, onion, bell peppers, mushrooms, sausage, pepperoni, salami). The pizza is freaking HUGE. Yes, its expensive $22 for a medium. But now I know why. Not only is it huge, the entire pizza was COVERED in toppings. So much so that I wasn't sure if I saw any sauce or cheese.
The pizza is tasty, however, I know it sounds weird, but there IS such a thing as topping overload. There was so much toppings I felt like I was eating a veggie/meat salad instead of a pizza!!
There was only two of us and we felt like we barely made a dent. I believe our left overs is good for another TWO meals.
BTW.... the canned mushrooms is not so cool man...
the food is good and worth the actual cost, especially the specialty pizza!
First I have let ppl know this is a somewhat bias rating, and i'll explain why in a little bit....
I always get the take out family pizza, this was my first dinning in. My boyfriend's friends & I, decided to head to Petrillo's for dinner, but of course everyone lags and comes at different times, which turn into people ordering at different times. I order last because I'm picky.
Everyone starts eating and my food still isn't here on table, 40mins pass. The waitress tells us the food got 'burnt' so they need to recook it, but the order is comp.
So, when the check comes we expect a $40+ meal with the discount. but it ends up being a bigger save, only costing$15 for 4 people. WE CAME UP on deal...
The 4 star goes to:
-off the hook calamari (probably one of the best i've tasted)
-the bread they give before your meal (crispy yet soft)
-the pizza was good (mushrooms were off, don't like the canned style)
You can tell this place is a local hangspot. Family types, people who look like they've been going there for decades....
Definitely would return for the calamari. If you're into thick crust style pizza, then you'll love this place.
Ah gah...what can I say about this place except...BRING YOUR APPETITE!
There's parking on the street and in the back.
The servings are huge. One pasta dish is big enough to feed 2-4 people, depending on how hungry you are. Our party had four people and we grazed on a small pizza with mushrooms, pepperoni, and sausage. The pizza tasted great! It was cooked just right. We also had cannolis, and spaghetti with meatballs. The meatball were huge and hearty. The cannolis were extremely flavorful and melted in my mouth. The spaghetti was alright, nothing to write home about. The prices are reasonable, dishes running around $10-15.
The place doesn't take reservations on the weekend so try to get there at odd hours for good service. The place can get packed fast.
Service is just okay. It could have been better. We were going to order dessert but since the waitress never came back, we skipped it and called it a night.
The pizza is GOOD! You have to try it! I've been going there for years with my boyfriend, friends, and family. The portions are big and you can always share with someone. It gets pretty busy on the weekends. They have a carry out service. They are known for their large specialty pizza which is loaded with onions, bell peppers, sausage, & mushroom. It's pretty yummy. Oh and chicken Parmesan is pretty good too! Well, atleast try it once and see for yourself!
The best pizza in L.A. County
An original that has not been duplicated. The toppings are very generous, so it is possible to over-do it. Stay way from the pasta, but the Antipasto Salad is awesome.
A San Gabriel landmark.
Ordered a large specialty pizza basically a supreme pizza and some chicken wings. Honestly I thought the chicken wings tasted better than the pizza. I did not go here directly myself so I have no experience on the service or anything else there. My cousin brought over the pizzas and they were huge. The pizzas were okay to me. Really thick crust, lots of toppings on it. I guess I was just expecting more based on the pictures I saw. I am sick of it right now, I ate like half of a large myself. Honestly I would prefer Papa Johns and pay half the price.
Positives:
Chicken wings were good.
Generous toppings.
The large is ridiculously huge.
Negatory:
Prices can get expensive.
Chicken wings tasted better than the pizza.
The pizza is delicious because the toppings are fresh and there's a lot. It is expensive but I suggest you get the medium and it should last for more than a day, depending on how many people you're serving. Very good and fresh.
After having a light breakfast and no lunch, I decided that I needed a heartier dinner than the salad we had originally planned for. So we turned to trusty Yelp for some ideas and decided on Petrillo's.
We were immediately seated on a Sunday evening. My fiance decided on the Half and Half which is half spaghetti and have ravioli. I decided on a lasagna with a side of meatballs. We also decided to get a medium Petrillo's specialty in case our portions weren't going to be enough and for breakfast/lunch the following day.
The cheese-filled ravioli was tasty. I was especially impressed with the Lasagna which was very hearty and meaty. The accompanying meatballs were very good as well. I was especially impressed with the tomato sauce which was very flavorful and slightly sweet.
The medium pizza was actually much larger that I had anticipated. The Petrillo's specialty is absolutely loaded with toppings including, Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Salami, Green Peppers, Onions and Mushrooms. A particularly memorable bite resulted in 4 pieces of salami covered by a slice of pepperoni covered by a green pepper. I'm not really a fan of the canned mushrooms (as was mentioned in previous reviews). I'd rather pay more to get fresh mushrooms.
I really enjoy the tangy pizza sauce and the awesome crust. It's definitely a thick crust that is simultaneously crunchy and chewy.
Beware that there is only 2-3 spaces behind the restaurant, but there's plenty of street parking.
I can't wait to go back!!
Awesome pizza! The portions are HUGE. I came here with a big group and we had the large and we could barely finish. The boys were stuffed, which is saying a lot considering how much boys eat. I tried some of a pasta dish and it was nothing special. I also came here another time and shared a small pizza with one other person and had leftovers. Definately come here for the pizza! Prices are a bit more than you would expect but it's worth it. The only criticism I have for this place is the horrible, horrible service. It takes forever to get your food and equally as long to get a waitress' attention. Besides that though, i will always come back for the steller pizza.
It is unfortunate that I have to give this place 2 stars! If eating Petrillo's pizza was my first time trying pizza in my life, I would probably never eat pizza again. Petrillo's might even deserve a 1 star, but the wings nudged it's rankings to 2.
I don't know how Petrillo's got an weighted average of 4 stars, when my experience with the food was close to 1 star. The problem must lie in my taste, or the fact that they had an off day. I'm leaning towards the later explanation.
When I called in to make an order, their lines were busy, and I know they have more than one line or have call waiting, so they must have been busy to semi-busy. The restaurant side of Petrillo's was about half full, while the pick-up side had about 15 people waiting to pick up their order, myself included. This confirmed that they had a busy night, which could have been typical.
The fact that they were so busy, might have pushed them to rush the cooking, which could be why the quality of the pizza was poor. The pizza was very doughy, and didn't seem fully cooked. The balance between the sauce and cheese wasn't there, as I have experienced before, such as from Woodstock Pizza. The cheese tasted a little harder/thicker, so it did not really stretch out while you bit in and pulled away. As for the rest of the toppings, they were mediocre.
Domino's would have been more worth it. Domino's would have been 1/3 as expensive and twice as good, which gives you a factor of 6. Under the price and quality variables, this would be an equivalent of 12 stars relative to Petrillo's pizza.
In reality, I could be being a little too harsh. This was my first experience at Petrillo's, and it happened to be take-out, rather than sit-and-dine. Also, I wasn't hungry but managed to stuff 6 slices and 4 wings into my stomach.
Two stars will do justice. Maybe I'll write a more provocative update after eating the leftovers.
I have to say super uber yummy pizza.
Cute, friendly HS girls to take your order with a smile.
I haven't had the pleasure of eating in yet - just the pickup.
Really wanted to try their fried calamari but it was 9.95 - kinda pricey but I think they give a lot bc instead I got the fried zucchini (6.95) and it was a boat full. Was NOT good tho ... YIKES.
I might change my mind on the 3/star if the calamari wins me over.
The pizza is delicious and dripping toppings !!!
It is stating the obvious to say it's better than Dominos/Pizza Hut/Papa Johns.... bc this is family owned and has survived ... what is it "since 1954"?
It is the same crime as to compare In&Out to McDonalds ... BUT there comes a moment, when we do crave the latter.
Haven't had anything else besides the pizza for take-out. The tomato sauce is zesty and probably the highlight of the entire composition. I do not like the fact that they use canned mushrooms as opposed to fresh. Major gripe for me, as I am quite the mushroom connoisseur (of the non-hallucinating kind that is). I notice that this seems to be a phenomenon amongst many mom and pop Italian joints, the usage of canned mushrooms. I would have thought it would be the other way around, but I guess not?
If you're exclusively into thin NY style pizza, you're going to hate Petrillo's pizza. It is of the thick and hearty variety, and actually maybe a little too bready. But eh, what are you gonna do. Just eat it.
Best Pizza in the San Gabriel Valley, PERIOD. I don't think Robert ever had a real pizza, and most likely has acquired a taste for processed garbage. Domino's doesn't even compare, putting Petrillos on a whole different and higher level of standards. If any Italian restaurant is busy, then it must be good, and Petrillos has been serving up pizzas for over 50 years. They opened up for business in 1954, and haven't looked back.
While there, I suggest ordering the Petrillos Specialty pizza, because the ingredients were so fresh and all around good combination. Most pizzerias use the "rabbit turd" sausage, but not Petrillos. The sausage they use is meat market fresh, and is piled on in split-styled chunks, not processed "ball bearings". Also, Petrillos makes their own dough fresh daily, and bread as well. The bread was also very good with the butter. If you want to taste the best italian food in the SGV, look no further, because this place is it!
THE PIZZA!! THE BEST PIZZA!! That's all I've got to say!! I have tried the gnocchis, chicken parmigiana, salad, minestrone, all good but the pizza is the best- you must try it. The bread crust it a bit crispy yet soft inside, sauce is just perfect! Not too sweet not too bitter, cheese is so delicious, and I do not eat pepperoni/ pork but my family says it is GREAT. They use tiny pepperonis, I just like to steal the cheese/ herbs they sprinkle in the middle of em. :p YUMM!! I have not ever tried a better pizza in So Cal!!!! It tastes great reheated too! And their house bread & ranch are SOOOOO good too!!! You can dine there or order to go & pick it up. Luv it!
Growing up in the SGV for the past 30 plus years, few things have remained the same. Zody's is now a Big Lot's, Staples, and Big 5. Gemco was a Target, and now some mega mart. Mission Hardware is still Mission Hardware but you can't get much to eat there. Bottom line, if Petrillo's wasn't worthy, it wouldn't last. People complain about "greasy pizza" or "canned ingredients", when they should be appreciating the pizza as a whole. What pizza isn't greasy? If it's not greasy it's probably not worth eating. Did they leave the can for a topping on top of your pizza? Then I'd understand, if not, get over it. This is just great pizza that's lasted for a reason.....they make some dam good pizza pie.
Petrillo's makes Pizza Hut's bigfoot pizza look like a hobbitfoot.
My all time favorite is the beastly Petrillo's special. Loaded with toppings, like a seven layer pizza, it's chock full of awesomeness. Last week, I brought one large pie to feed 12 people and we had leftovers. It was a freakin miracle, like Jesus with the 5 loaves and 2 fish. Mmm... sacralicious.
Tips: Call ahead and pick up at the take-out window.
The pizza here isn't that great.Bollini's in Monterey Park is WAY better. Our waitress was also very rude when my bf corrected her on a mistake she made on the check. He never complains when we go anywhere, but she was charging us extra for something that we didn't order. She had the nerve to tell him "I'll fix it before you make it into a big deal". We've both worked in the food/customer service business and you NEVER say that to a customer especially when it's your fault.I'll never go here again.
Another lone holdout on the beachhead of the Asian Invasion. Petrillo's Pizza has been an integral part of my life since I was old enough to chew my own food. Put simply, Petrillo's, and their hugetacular rectangular family pizzas (supreme of course) specifically, are the best thing to come out of the San Gabriel Valley since Jackie Robinson. Thick, real Mozzarella that stretches for miles, a dump truck's load of toppings, and the required order of extra garlic equals the best pizza ever, period. Get yourself a six pack of a good IPA and pour yourself some herb olive oil to dunk the crust in. Heaven.
The rest of the food is alright, but the real attraction here is the pizza. Do note that there is a separate entrance for take out.
