If you want to feel like you're in another world, go to the Petrified Forest National Park. The colors in the Painted Desert are outstanding. Some of the scenes just take your breath away. I will never forget the TeePees and our hike around Blue Mesa. It is an incredible place.

All National Parks are not created equal and this park is evidence of that. Don't get me wrong, it is cool to see, but I wouldn't go out of the way to see it. If you're driving on I-40 and see the signs for Petrified Forest National Park, take the exit. Check it out. You'll probably like it. I'm basing my 2 star rating compared to other National Parks. It's very educational

Review from ERIC E.
The sky always seems to be a brilliant color of blue here! While not the spectacular scenery of say, Yosemite, Death Valley, Bryce or Zion Parks, this place is absolutely worth a visit. It's the Petrified Wood Capitol of the USA, and has some neat easy hiking trails, Native American petroglyphs, and overall cool scenery. The Park is actually two places in one- Petrified Forest, and The Painted Desert. The old lodge at the Painted Desert, north of the park entrance, is now a visitors center and has been restored, with some magnificent views out into the abyss of the Painted Desert and Navajo Nation. Fantastic auto-touring place.

I am a road-trip queen. How else can I explain my penchant for transcontinental road trips? If you need a co-pilot to drive across the country, well, I'll be there for you.
During one of my road trips, when one of my girlfriend's was "finding herself" post-divorce, we discovered the Petrified Forest.
It really isn't so much a forest of trees, but more a forest of tree fossils. The Petrified Forest National Park is a sight to behold. This Park contains"...one of the world's largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood, multi-hued badlands of the Painted Desert, historic structures, archeological sites, and displays of 225 million year old fossils, this is a surprising land of scenic wonders and fascinating science".
We drove and drove and spent about 3 hours beholding nature's wonders. We stopped frequently to take photos of the Native American petroglyphs and to watch the rainbow of colors rippling in the sand at sunset. There was a sense of spiritual peacefulness in the absence of noise.
