Absolutely stunning!!! The white sand beaches are amazing and colors of the lake; varying from aqua to navy are gorgeous. There are long stretches of beach with a back drop of dunes. If you are looking for a quiet spot you can easily get away from the crowd at the main beach by taking a short stroll in either direction. My 1.5 year old and 3 year old had a ball running up and down the dunes and splashing in the lake. There is a bike path that will take you right into the wonderful town of Petoskey.

The state park in Petoskey is just...wonderful. It is so very pretty at night (but pretty much anywhere you can see the lake is pretty at night). The beaches are generally clean and even if you are staying the night in a hotel or with friends or in a cottage or a different park (Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga is great if the state park is full up, though it is off the beaten path)...you still should go to the state park for a day to enjoy the beaches. And....our city is very windy, especially in an open area like the beach, so make sure to bring cover-ups, clothes, towels, and/or blankets.

I haven't actually stayed in the park overnight, but my parents' friends and even some of my own friends have stayed there and think it's a great experience.

OH. Petoskey stones are pretty rare these days, but the trick is to.....get the rock wet. That's how you can tell if it actually is a Petoskey stone because that's the only way you can see the patterns that you would see on a polished/finished stone that they sell in stores.

We stayed at the Dunes campground site over Labor Day 2008.  All sites were booked, it's a popular place!  The weather was perfect for camping - mid 80's and sunny each day along with low humidity.

We explored the Petoskey and surrounding areas in our days there including Bay Harbor, the Soo Locks, and the Tahquamenon Falls.  All of these are within 2 hours drive or less from Petoskey.

The campground is good, it has electrical service and flush toilets along with free showers that include plenty of hot water!  The rangers do enforce the 11 pm quiet hours on radios and noise which we were warned on 1 evening.  They were not rude at all and I was happy to turn things down as we were unaware of the time.

The only bad thing about the site was their firewood supply.  It's an honor system and costs $4 a bundle.  The problem is all their firewood is nothing but tiny scrap that goes up in an instant.  Go to the party store just down the street from the park for some half-decent wood.  If you drive further south on M-31 you'll find some other places selling bigger hardwood logs.

The beach here provide breath taking sunsets.  This is something you have to see if you come up here.

Finding Petoskey stones is tough but they're around...

I weep for those who come to Petoskey and do not make it out to this fine beach.

    Beautiful.  Big freaking lake.
Plus, they have a game room.
With a Pac Man Jr. machine.

No change machines though, which meant I had to go for a long walk on the beach.  And seriously... I do like long walks on the beach... I just don't get to do it all that often.

And let me tell you, for a guy who has always been around oceans and bays... walking in a freshwater lake, and not getting all itchy from salt, is Incredible.  Seriously.  Who would have thunk it.

Costs a car full of people from out of state $8 for the day.
Don't forget a coverup, because it can be chilly in the summer wind.
