I am very loyal to the Wellness dog food & Petland is one of the few places close to town that consistently has most of the variety of the dry & canned foods.
Beware: Like other reviews, you must look at the expiration date. If not, you'll end up with maggots in your dog food, like the ones seen in the bargain bins sold up front.
A big store, with lots of choices. I don't buy pet food here, I opt for "unexpired" items like pet beds and grooming product. Its not cheap here, but there is a decent selection - refreshing.
I had to laugh about Chris W.'s review though, because the last time I was in line, the woman in front of me tried to ask the clerk about the bird food she was buying. The clerk dully looked at her, screamed over her shoulder to another indifferent clerk and said "Do YOU know anything about this food?" before turning back to the customer and asking "What is it you want to know?" The poor woman was so taken aback by their inability to discuss the product and unwillingness to help, she just purchased the product and hoped for the best. (Hope she checked the expiration date.)
So, if your expectations are low and you aren't buying a pet or something your pet will eat..this seems to be the place to go.
huge selection of fish. next time i will be smarter and keep my damn receipt! one of the fish i bought died on the way home and i threw my receipt away right after purchase...idiot!
money back or exchange if you bring back the dead/sick fish with your receipt.
I also had problems with expired food. I wasted a case of dog food because I didn't notice the expiration date.
Prices are higher here.
I don't think the prices are particularly high here as some of the other reviewers mentioned, at least compared to other pet stores in Honolulu/East Honolulu. That being said, I'm sure you could find better deals at Walmart or Target if they happen to have what you are looking for.
The only reason why I keep coming back here is because they do have a pretty good selection. However, I too have had a problem with expired dog food. I unwittingly bought and fed some to my puppy, and he ended up throwing up all night. To top it off, I had mixed it with his usual food because it was a brand I hadn't tried before. After that, he wouldn't touch his usual food either. When I went back to the store to return it and explain what happened, the clerk rolled his eyes and disappeared somewhere in the back to presumably get the return approved by a manager. After finishing the paperwork, there was no apology or even a "I hope your puppy is OK." At that point, I should have known that this must not be an unusual occurrence for them.
I'm not sure if it's a management decision to not throw away old stock or if they don't really know what's happening because of negligent workers who do not check the stock. It's rather disappointing either way.
So why 2 stars instead of 1? I still think they have a nice selection of toys, and other non-edible products. Plus they have a large parking lot and are conveniently located.
Their cockatiels are in horrible condition! I asked a clerk why the cockatiels were in such bad shape, and he half-assed replied, "oh, cuz one of the birds in there is biting all the other birds."
What a lousy excuse! Solve the problem by removing the aggresive bird; don't let the behavior continue.
I get the impression this store does not take good care of their animals.

this pet store is just 'okay.' customer service here is just mediocre to me. i don't think i have a bitchy face, but something must be wrong with me b/c not one person has ever asked if i needed help when i come here. what the hell?! basically i go here out of convenience...
anyway if you ever have to return something here, beware of the clerk with the 'evil eye.' i had to return five cans of dog food b/c he didn't like it. as soon as i asked the clerk, 'can i return these items?' she looked in the bag, and gave 'that' look and said 'yeah.' hey, it's not my fault your store has a manual return policy where you actually have to look at each item, record the item number and product, ask my phone number, ask why i'm returning the product, and ask for my signature! sheesh, whatever happened to good ol' customer service in these little shops?! then the idiot i am felt bad b/c i didn't wish her a 'happy new year' as she had said to me...oh well...at least she said thank you! yay!
I go to this pet store often since it's convenient, but this is the second time I have bought something there and find out later it was expired. The first time I bought him biscuits and later that day, saw that it expired about a year ago. I returned it, got credit, and didnt think much of it since mistakes happen (especially when you have a big store). I go in today to buy some treats and what do you know? I come home fed it to my dog, but he didnt want to eat it. I look at the expiration date, it expired two months ago. I understand that two months ago isnt THAT bad, but it is considering most treats are supposed to have an expiration date of about a year or two from the purchase date. I think i'll be buying anything edible elsewhere.
