I have to put a plug in here for the southwestern veggie burger -- abundant black beans and pleasing overall texture.  Add some cheese and some addictive fries and you've got yourself a seriously good vegetarian meal. The shakes are good, but I swear every time I have one, I get sick. Oh vell. Please eat the veggie burger!

Oh yea, and the delivery guys aren't the best here...they always forget straws, pens to sign credit card receipts, etc., but the online ordering is generally efficient and easy. And you get coupons if you're on their mailing list! I love coupons.

Guys- don't be fooled by all these insanely good reviews for this place.  I just don't get it.  Petey's is mediocre at best.

It's expensive.  It's only a step above a fast-food-chain burger.  The comparisons to all these burger legends (Five Guys, In-and-Out, etc) are LUDICROUS.  This place isn't even close.

I would certainly go here before I'd go to McDonalds, but there are way too many options out there for this place to be so highly regarded.

I am completely bewildered by the outpouring of love for Petey's. The comparisons to Inn-n-Out are galling.  Petey's burgers simply aren't in the same ballpark, zip code, area code, city, or state. (In the same country? Well, literally yes but just barely.) In particular, the Cajun patty was the most overprocessed piece of nastiness that I've ever had the misfortune of eating. The chocolate shake was just gross.

The fries were pretty good but overall you'd be better off going to Burger King. Or better yet, just hit the taco shop down the block. Or get a gyro from just about anywhere. God, there are so many fast food options in Astoria that are better than this place.

For the love of burgers, do yourself a favor and skip Petey's. As others have noted, Petey's isn't even a good value. For my $$, Five Guys slings the best fast-food burger in Queens.

(For the record, I'm not a West Coast transplant wallowing in nostalgia; I'm a native Queens kid that gets to Inn-n-out once a year.)

Deciding what to write up as your first Yelp review can be a bit stressful. I settled on Petey's Burger because I consider myself a bit of a cheeseburger aficionado and I recently chose Petey's as my last meal in Astoria before I moved out of the neighborhood a few weeks ago.

Astoria is a truly wonderful neighborhood in terms of food, but in my opinion it lacked a solid burger option until Petey's opened. Petey's is basically a locally owned, non-chain version of Five Guys and that sort of relatively fast food style burger. A typical Petey Burger comes dressed with lettuce, tomato, onion and special sauce, which is the typical 1,000 Island dressing ketchup and mayo combo.

As far as I know there is not an option to have your burger cooked to order, and Petey's tends to overcook their meat, usually to the Medium Well borderland. That would typically turn me off at a burger joint, but Petey's does a nice job of seasoning their meat and putting out a sloppy, greasy sandwich of goodness. In other words, despite being overcooked, it still tastes pretty good.

If you've got a solid appetite, it's tough to go wrong with the combo meal that pairs a double cheeseburger with fries and a drink. I've tried the vanilla shake here as well, and while it's good, it is also a bit pricey, so I generally just go with the drink that is included with the combo, which is a choice of various canned sodas.

The fries at Petey's are of the fresh-cut shoestring variety and pretty tasty. You get an enormous order of them with the combo, and I've yet to finish all of mine, so you might want to consider splitting an order unless you're really, really hungry.

Petey's has veggie burgers and salads too for our friends that don't get down with the beef, but I've never tried them because, well, I get down with the beef.

In summary, this ain't no Shake Shack or Burger Joint, but it's a solid burger option for Astorians, especially those living near the 30th Avenue N/W stop. At least one other burger establishment has opened in the area recently (31st Avenue's Bareburger), but I'd still say Petey's is your best option for a burger in Northwest Queens.

I enjoy Petey's quite a lot. I've been coming here since it first opened, and crave their food on a regular basis. I walk by here pretty regularly, and it's conveniently located right next to the 30th Ave. stop on the N/W.

I almost always get the same thing: just a burger and fries and a Coke or chocolate shake. Everything is always fresh and tasty. I like the burgers and they are reminiscent of In-n-Out, but not the same. That would be hard to duplicate. But I'll take reminiscent. They're good about not overloading with the sauce. I haven't experienced the salt overload that some other reviewers have written about. Generally I put more salt on the fries as they come pretty naked. But they're also good without. Shakes are good and thick, very chocolate-y, and if I'm in the neighborhood craving a milkshake, this is where I go.

The burgers aren't huge, and I like that, because I often feel like food goes to waste when I'm dining out. I'm on the smaller side and my stomach literally isn't big enough for the enormous servings at many other places. I regularly polish off an entire meal here without a problem. Sometimes there are a few extra fries. If I have a friend with me I usually split an order of fries.

They also have a really good-looking veggie burger that my vegetarian friends have given the thumbs-up to. I haven't tried it myself, but it's one of the only veggie burgers that I, a devout carnivore, would actually consider ordering. Maybe I will one of these days...

Fresh, clean, what a burger should taste like.

Petey's is tucked away in Astoria but is what I want a burger to taste like.  Clean, slightly greasy, and meaty.  It's basically the put good ingredients in equals good burger.

It's definitely good if you're in the area but I don't think it's worth a trip just to eat here.

As the ratings system indicates for 2 stars - "Meh. I've experienced better."

The patty was maybe as thin as something from Burger King and toppings were only marginally better. Sure, everything was fresh but it doesn't really take much to throw on some lettuce, tomato, onions, and some "special sauce". Not that it was bad, but again "meh. I've experienced better." Does NOT compare to In-N-Out. Not even close.

The highlight of the meal were the fries. I'd go back for those. Fresh cut with a heaping helping. mmm mmm good!

Listen, if your really looking for an in-and out burger well this comes really close. The burger is good the fries are good and the shakes are good. Thats all I can say just good.
Will I go back? Sure why not but if I didn't I wouldn't really care.
By the way what the hell is up with the salt everywhere? The burgers seemed like somebody over salted them to hell and the fries, oh my god after eating them my lips swelled and ripped open! True story.

DAMN GOOD BURGER & FRIES

I recommend this place. It's great. It reminds me of a gourmet McDonald's. It's not a "gourmet burger" just a regular burger that tastes delicious. It is a little expensive, but so is McDonald's.

The only problem is the light coming through the windows while watching TV. They need to put curtains up or something to block the sunlight from shining in. It's way to bright and the view sucks anyway.

I bet it would increase their business if they do that. People don't want light blasting in their face while eating.

I've read a lot of reviews saying that this place is similar to In-and-Out Burger on the west coast. I've never been to In and Out before but I've heard people rave about how it's the best burger place over there.

If this place is like that, then boy do I feel sorry for people on the west coast.

Don't get me wrong, it's not BAD. It's just "meh". It's exceptionally mediocre in every possible way. Nothing stands out, nothing screams note worthy. At the end of the day, its just a burger with small patties and an over abundance of "special" sauce.

I had Petey's for the first time about 6-8 months ago and have ordered it occasionally since. The first time I called, they seemed pissed that I wanted to order over the phone and not online --- but the subsequent times they were very friendly. The double w/ cheese is certainly filling and very tasty. Fries are excellent and well-done as most like em. Chocolate shake was delicious. I would probably rank them higher if I ever tasted it in person, but I have only ordered delivery. This is definitely a recommended Queens burger joint!

Tasty fries and burgers, although a little expensive. It's not quite at the level of Five Guys burgers, but it's a good spot for a quick meal.

The flat screen tv was playing the Yankees game, so that gives an extra half a star or something.

Ask for CAJUN FRIES.

You'll kill yourself for not ordering them before.
Love this place. The cajun burger is sometimes really really salty, so beware.  Burgers can get really greasy so I ask them to not ladle on the fake butter crap so much.

Awesome burgers, bring your own A-1 tho. :D

yum!

petey's, thank you for being one stop away from me.  also, damn you for being one stop away from me.  conveniently located down the street from a 7-11 (really, there are 7-11s in the city?) so you can get a big gulp slurpee on your way home and really up your fat-and-sugar intake for the day.  a little bit on the greasy side but all the same, a very good burger at a very good price.

okay.  i'm not going to lie.  i'll still do the trek-and-wait for shake shack.  i'll still elbow jockey for room at burger joint.  but petey's?  a solid choice.

yay, petey's!

Arg, why did I have to find out about this place right when I'm about to leave Astoria?

It's not quite In-N-Out, and it's not as greasy and delicious as Shake Shack but it's a cheap, good burger. Also, I think I liked the fries better than In-N-Out. I don't usually go for the milkshake but I tried a vanilla one. It was decent.

My real question is--can they do animal style??

Need a really good burger for a really good price?  This is the place!  The place is nothing fancy, but when you are on a tight budget for some good eats, you can't go wrong here.  The Cajun Fire burger was out of this world.  The right amount of spice.   The Triple Cheese burger was incredible.  The meat is very tasty.  Fries are way better than other fast food places.  Shakes are worth it too.

I grew up in Southern California and I've been to In-N-Out countless times.  Since Petey's has clearly modeled their food after In-N-Out any review must include comparisons.

I have to say I was disappointed.  I got a double cheeseburger with grilled onions and, while it looked very similar to a Double Double, the taste was very different.  The overpowering flavor of the burger was salt.  Salt, salt, salt.  I feel like someone must have made a mistake and accidentally over salted my burger 3 or 4 times.  Other than the salt, the burger was ok.  The quality of the meat seemed to be a bit lower than In-N-Out.  In the end, I left about 1/4 of my burger on the tray.  I just couldn't rationalize putting any more of it in my body.

The fries were good.  They give you nice big pile of them.  They are very different from In-N-Out's fries but definitely the best thing about the meal.

I didn't get a shake so I can speak to those.  I can tell you they don't have fountain sodas.  It's can only.  That's disappointing.  Burgers and fries deserve a nice big cup of icey soda.

It's also a little pricey.  My burger, fries and soda can cost over $10.  That's a little steep for what it is.

One thing that certainly did not enhance my enjoyment was the volume of their television.  I've never heard the Tyra Banks show quite that loud.  Good God.  Get your food to go.  Better yet, just go someplace else.

As a native Californian, I am nearly offended that people are passing In-N-Out's title to Petey's Burger...   I'll compare notes when I go back.

Okay, anyway.  Petey's Burger is really, really, really good.  I go there regularly.  If not too regularly.  Nothing is better than walking away with a milkshake from Petey's, after having had a cheeseburger.  The people are friendly and have it together.  The place is kept nice.  Is it Petey himself?  He's often around, too, keeping it local.

My hope is that a few more Petey's pop up, so that Astorians can be proud to say we knew Petey's first.

this is my first ever yelp review, but i just had to give a big old thumps-up to petey's.

i'm not generally a big cheeseburger enthusiast, honestly. i mean, i like one every now and again, but if i don't have one for a while, i really don't miss them. but i LOVE the food at petey's. the cheese is always perfectly melty, the meat is delicious and the fries are A++.

i've had food from petey's a few times and loved it every time, and i'm currently happily slurping down my first-ever petey's shake. cold chocolate-y heaven!

I suppose Petey's is good for what it is.  Small patty on a generic bun with relatively good fries on the side.  The service is always friendly. It's cheap.  It's fast.

But I don't know, best burger in town? That's pushing it a little.  I mean, it does not compare to Paul's or McCann's.  The thought of Petey's burger will never induce spontaneous salivation.  The smell of it will not make me jump for joy.  One look at the small burger wrapped in oh-so-classy red paper will not make my eyes flicker.  And I certainly will not sink into a state of euphoric satisfaction after I bite into it.

Besides, my friend recently advised me that petey's cooks inadvertently left a piece of glove (yes, glove) in his patty. Ha well, at least we now know that they wear gloves when they cook, so that's a plus...

I'd heard good things about Petey's, and hey, it was near enough to me that I had to give it a shot.

I was so disappointed when I finally got around to it.

Not in the food mind you.... disappointed in myself for depriving myself of the finest burger I have ever eaten for so long.  This is not fluffy hyperbole my friend, as soon as I bit into my burger, tears of joy began streaming down my face, and I'm pretty sure the lord revealed himself before me to explain that the secret of pure happiness in the universe is a bite of Petey's delicious two patty burger.

Aside from their blasphemously good cheeseburgers, they also have great hand cut fries and milkshakes as well.  We split at milkshake at the end of the meal, and as good as it was, I regretted it since it replaced the lingering burger taste in my mouth.  And I wanted to hold on to that for as long as possible.

The city is in the midst of a true burger renaissance right now with Shake Shack, Good Burger, and many others.  But I'm hear to tell you that a short train ride outside the city proper lies a burger so sublimely perfect that it can't possibly be described by mere words.  You'll just have to taste it for yourself.  You'll understand.

I enjoy a fine beef patty.  Shake Shack and Five Napkin Burger are among my favorite destinations.  So it was with great surprise that I noticed an establishment not far from my current homestead garnering such praise for what can be a very common American meal.  To be quite honest, the food was good enough.  Maybe a cross between Shake Shack and Johnny Rockets.  Juicy burgers in wax paper with pretty crispy fries.

Although with a drink, the price neared or eclipsed $10.  And for that you can get much better in Manhattan at NY Burger Company or brgr.  If you don't mind doing takeout, I would give it 4 stars.  But it is not a place I would go to sit down and savor a meal, even as deliciously unhealthy as this.  Perhaps Queens shouldn't be judged to the same level as Manhattan, but honestly other fast food joints are more welcoming so I am going to have to give it a 3.

Petey's is a decent burger place and well worth the trek out to Astoria every now and then for me. Their burgers are meaty, seem somewhat fresh and I love how they give you a pile of french fries instead of mcdonald's "controlled portion" size. I don't like the fact that they only have canned soda... I'm a fountain soda kind of guy.

I recently returned from a trip to San Francisco and while I was there, I stopped by In-and-Out Burger for one last comparison to Petey's.

I ordered a burger with no cheese because all I wanted to compare was the how soft, wet and juicy the burger patty was.  (i tried to make this sentence sound sexual, but it didn't work.)

I bit into it, chewed it, and said to myself, "This ain't no petey's burger!"  Everyone stared at me like I was some crazy ranting homeless guy at the wharf. Because homeless people in SF don't rant, that's rude!

So there you have it folks: an In-and-out Burger is NOT a Petey's Burger!

Preface: If you want this review to be a comparison to In-N-Out, then sorry; I've never eaten there. Sorry. I've only been to California a few times, and I never got to stop in.

What I will say is that Petey's was really good. Simple burger with tomato, onion and lettuce, done right. And a great mound of fries to go alongside. Quick service, and pretty well priced.

I think somewhere in my head I wanted to compare this place to Five Guys, but I really can't. This is a simple burger; Five Guys is a pile of death. Delicious, delicious death to be sure, but it can be a bit much. I've walked out of that place feeling gross, and I didn't get that feeling at all from Petey's.

I'll be back at Petey's soon enough; it's only one train stop away...

It's not every day that I travel out to Astoria for a meal. Much less lunch. But my friend convinced me that this was the real deal, and he was pretty much right on.

I was born in California and have been back many times since that magical day 24 1/2 years ago...In-n-Out has secured a special place in my heart. That said, Petey's reminds me of Jack in the Box and other attempts to emulate the quivering delight that is In-n-Out.

Petey's certainly has the look...the red and yellow.  The stainless steel tables. The wonderful paper wrapping and "special sauce" on the burger. I ordered a double cheeseburger, and had to restrain myself from ordering a Double Double. I *almost* couldn't help myself. But I managed to restrain myself. Petey's lets you add and subtract whatever toppings you want. Bonus!

A double cheeseburger runs you about $6 and if you want fries, you can add another $2 or so. If you want a soda, then you're looking at a $10 meal. Not bad, but not great either. We are talking about a fast food type of joint after all.

Our experience at Petey's was even made complete with the suburban mom squinting and peering in through the window with her fanny pack on. Gotta love Queens.

It's an average burger place. It's good for a quick burger fix. However, I've had much better burgers (JOY BURGER!).

The burger patties were decent, too much cheese for me though. The fries were good, they're reminiscent of In N Out fries from Cali.

Overall, they're good... but probably not the greatest.

I know this has been written a million times on here but, well, I'm going for a million and one. I HAVE FOUND AN EAST COAST IN N OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact, I'm relatively certain that it really IS In n Out just wearing a mask that says "Petey's". You can't fool me!!!!!!

Wow. Just FREAKIN' WOW!!!! Hands down this is officially my favorite burger place in New York. Especially since it's so unbelievably like In N Out. I got the double cheeseburger (a homage to the Double Double of In 'n' Out fame). It was indescribably juicy and delicious. JUICY AND DELICIOUS I SAY!!!!!! The fries made me twitch a little with unexpected pleasure. AND THE QUANTITY! I could barely finish the fries!! I initially thought the $9 I was dropping at a fast food place was slightly overpriced, but you most definitely get your money's worth.

As I sit here writing this review, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that a mere two avenue walk away from me is In N Out reincarnate.

I really don't want to say ANYTHING bad about Petey's but I do have one minor gripe. GET A FOUNTAIN SODA MACHINE!!!!!!!!! First off, $1.50 for a can of soda is unacceptable. Secondly...GET A FOUNTAIN MACHINE!! I kinda want to ask them if they will get one, but I know that they'll just hold up an aforementioned double double and I'll melt away into oblivion, my previous gripe forgotten. Hey, at least they had Dr. Pepper cans!!

Now stop reading this AND GO!!!! (call me first, I may join.) ; )

You were so good to ME. I don't think I've EVER been loved like that. You made my toes curl annd my heart sing. Sounds I didn't know were possible left my lips.

You were possibly some of the best meat I've had in a LONG time.

I've never had In-n-Out, so I cannot compare the two at all.

I don't get the hype. Petey's Burger was alright...definitely fast food burgers, so if you're looking for thick and juicy homemade type, this is not the place to go. The burger was fine...too much of their "special sauce" which I think was Thousand Island dressing. To be honest, it kind of reminded me of a juicier version of high school cafeteria/ McDonalds. The fries were tasty and for me the star of the meal.

All in all I would definitely come back with my friends, but would not seek it out myself.

Sorry, Petey....

I hate to do this to you, but $20 for two people to get 2 burgers, 2 orders of fries and two cans of diet coke is unacceptable in this economy. Especially w/o table service. Not to be a betch or anything, but you're good, not great.

Your burgers could stand to be bigger
The meat could be better quality & not so greasy
And you still don't serve pickles.

It actually makes me sad to think that I've spend $60 here since they opened and it was only 3 meals worth of food. That could have bought me a nice dinner at Blue Water Grill.

I think we should break up.

Premise: fresh fast food style burger joint.

The burgers are offered small - medium - large (single, double, triple patty). You can order a single burger or you can order the burger as part of a meal with fries & drink. Furthermore, you can request them to cook your patties to your liking (rare - well done). Sidenote, I asked
for medium-rare, they said "sure," and I received well-done :(

No dilly-dallying; no hesitation; I went straight for the big kahuna, Petey's Triple Cheeseburger. I've had triple burgers in the past, so I had some good benchmarks to rate this burger up against. When I was called to go up and pick up my burger, I was hit with a shocker (huh!?, that's pretty tiny for a triple burger.?!??, will that be enough?, maybe I should've went for the meal. Tony!, think positive , it's not always about the burger size). With a little bit of self-reassurance, I picked up my tray and made way to my table.

The burger comes with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. I added some ketchup into the mix. CHOMP! Chomp! Hmmm!, it's a good burger indeed. It's fresh made tooo, so it's good for me. But.., but, I miss the BK Triple Whopper :(  If memory serves me right, the Triple Whopper tastes better, and it's more filling. Petey's triple, as cute and messy as it was, left me wanting more.

So, Petey's does an above average burger, albeit a tad expensive for fast food. I'll take a Petey's burger over McDonald's, but I'll gladly take a Burger King Triple Whopper over either of them.

Petey's burgers are pretty ok, but they are not to be compared to In & Out! Their buns aren't toasted, their meat is totally different, and their fries are not the same. Why would people say that? Maybe because their packaging is similar but it has nothing to do with the food! People are weird to say that it's an east coast version of In & Out. Nothing compares!

I do like their "well done" fries since that's how I like it.  The burgers are quite small, FYI so order up!

I love burgers so I guess that makes me a burger snob. However, I do believe in trying a place more than a few times just in case there are inconsistencies.  So for now, I just say A-OK.

I had been dying to try this place for months.  A decent burger joint in Queens?  Quite the momentous occasion.  And to make the occasion even more momentous, I shared it with some of the best fast-food-eaters I know.  I mean really, who else on this earth, besides myself, would get a chocolate shake in freezing temperatures?  Why, Tito Rick, AKA, Roderick.  That's who!  What a trooper!

Unfortunately, the burger was not at all a revelation, although I do give Petey's an extra star just for bringing the burger joint concept to this part of Queens, for not all of us are blessed enough to be able to run off to College Point's Five Guys all the time.  The burger was tasty, but not quite up to my standards.  You see, when I bite into red meat, I want to taste meat, not blandness.  And gosh, what a small burger for $5.  How is it that I can go to BK, pay less and get a bigger, better burger?  The fries, while OK, were not salty or spicy or anything really.  The shake?  Good, but disappointing.  I've tasted the best in shakes from Johnny Rockets back home and the now defunct Dojo St. Mark's.  I can't go back from that Cadbury's taste.

Next time I visit Petey's, because despite this "meh" review, there will be a next time, I am getting the Petey Melt.  That must taste better.  It just has to.

PS - Thanks, Petey, for NOT serving pickles!

I love holding two buns and a big hunk of beef between my hands and having it melt in my mouth.  And what better place to accomplish this than Petey's Burger.

A few of us - no, actually alot of us - came here last night to give these bad boys a try. I ordered the Petey Melt combo, which is a burger with melted cheese, fried onions all on a nice big bun. The combo came with french fries and for a small fee a shake. Yes, even though it was probably about 1 degree outside, I still ordered a chocolate shake.

The burger was definitely the best I've had in awhile, and definitely the best in Queens. And I hate to say it, but it did remind me of In-n-Out, even right down to the packaging. But suffice to say, it was not In-n-Out.

The french fries left a little to be desired. Yes they were well cooked but it needed some seasoning on it. It was very plain tasting, no salt, no pepper, no nothing. Even dousing it in ketchup didn't really help. My suggestion: having toppings that you can order with the fries. You know, like a side of gravy, or maybe some cheese, some bacon bits, maybe even some chili. Anything!

All in all, the burger is definitely worth coming out to Astoria for. After all, it's only about 50 feet from the subway so you can't get lost unless you're Stevie Wonder.

Petey's is easily the best burger in Astoria and worth the money for an occasional lunch. Local delivery is fast and efficient, and online ordering works great! The location itself is convenient and usually has seating.

I recommend ordering the double cheeseburger combo with grilled onions and extra cheese. Also, get a grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes for later in the evening, presuming that a meal at Petey's satisfies nearly all your daily nutrition. They serve Fanta, which is key.

Update: Petey's has the fastest delivery times I've ever witnessed! After placing an online order, I usually hear my buzzer ring within 15 minutes. It's truly incredible...but then again, I live only two avenues south!

Tasty burger, really tasty shake, but... they slightly messed up my order

Everyone claims this place is really like In n' Out, and it sucks that I never been there so I can't compare. But that being the case, I really do like the burgers at Petey's. This place is not exactly big, there's a about 20 seats around small tables for 2 or 4. They have one big flat screen TV hanging above the entrance and it was perfect as I enjoy my burger while watching the Yankee preseason game in the new Yankee stadium. Nothing fancy, but this place just works as a burger joint.

I ordered a Double Cheese burger and a Chocolate Strawberry shake (as I heard about from Time Out NY). As I mentioned previously, I don't trust TONY critics review, but I was craving burger and this place did get raving reviews on here, so I didn't mind. The double cheeseburger came out great, so delicious, juicy and flavorful in every bite. Its just a bit messy but that's to be expected from a double cheeseburger. It can definitely rival Shake Shack. But as for the shake, they must have not heard "chocolate" and only gave me strawberry shake. I was kinda disappointed but I really like the shake. It was so delicious. The total came out to ~$12, which is good, but not the less than $10 that TONY mentioned (although they only ordered a regular burger w/ fries and a shake).

I will definitely go back, probably bring the Cheap Eats Meetup group here.
