La Mesa, CA
I moved to La Mesa (on Mt. Helix) in June, 2011. LOVE THIS DRINK HOLE. Jesse is the man when it comes to putting a smile on a sad souls face and THE JUKE BOX kicks ass as long as the right PERSON is picking the songs. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking this place out. During the recent black out this was the only place local that served ICE COLD DRINKS, didn't close their doors and kept the music rockin'!!! That is why I always go back and is the ONLY PLACE TO DRINK in the GROSSMONT / LA MESA area.
Thanks for the kind tips,
Sulo -

If you're in downtown La Mesa, this is one of the four options if you are looking for a bar.
Pete's is a dive bar option. If you want classier, go to Hoffers (unless you don't like cigars).
This place comes with its own version of Norm (Cheers reference)...it's the big dude with the long dreads. He kinda stares but he's harmless [I think].
The prices are cheap and the bartenders are friendly. The bald one is pretty cool and chatted me up when I was one of three people in the whole place.
During the week, this place is just an assemble of the regulars. On weekends, this place gets pretty busy.
It is best to park in the large back parking lot and walk in through the back entrance.
It's metered spots but it's free after 6 pm. -

My hubby and I have been coming to Pete's for almost 10 years now. The place started as a dive bar that we loved from the first visit. Over the years the place as been renovated and looks great! The staff is always friendly and welcoming. We always make it a point to have our birthday celebrations at this bar. Just stop by and you will see what a great hang-out this place is.
We love you Pete's!! -

I liked this place when it was a dive that you ducked your head into to polish off the night after Oktoberfest...my buddies and I even post-partied here after our buddy's wedding reception, so I have a couple good memories of this place...but even after the revamp, this place is STILL really cool and fun...the whole revamp of La Mesa Blvd is really cool to see actually. I just wish I lived closer, because it's a really good neighborhood bar.

What's not to like about this place? Seriously, it's a clean, fun hole-in-the-wall bar with cool peeps, great music (the juke box is packed) and cheap drinks.
Has anyone mentioned the pool tables are FREE during the day and only a quarter at night? Yup, just 25 friggin' cents, dude.
I'd like to say this place is so hip because of the locals (go La Mesa!), but have you seen Brandon, the 6'5 Viking UFC fighter by the door? I would NOT like to cause him grief.
I run into friends I hadn't yet met every single time I walk into this place. Celeste, the cutie behind the bar, is cool and keeps the drinks flowing.
There's a selection of the cheap-o routine beers and some good stuff on tap, can and bottle (excluding PBR, which --to my amazement and entertainment -- folks still like to guzzle)
In La Mesa and looking for a great time with some laid back folks? Pete's is the place. -

Pete's Place
Interesting Place
On a small busy street
Where locals and Newbies
Can dance to the beat
Nice spacious bar
A floor made to dance
Hit and miss with the bands
But give it a chance
Prices are decent
The drinks pretty strong
Go check it out
Have your friends come along -

I remember going to this bar a couple of times before they remodeled it and I wasn't too impressed. Sure, the drinks were cheap & stiff, but the decor lacked- how you say? Panache! Don't get me wrong, I'm a fine connoisseurs of the dive bar, but something about the low tiled ceilings and office carpeting was falling short of the character I look for in dives.
Recently, I moved back to the area and was seeking out some local watering holes near home. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Pete's Place is now right up my alley. They have created a more industrial look with concrete floors, exposed brick, and have removed the tacky ceiling tiles. The bathrooms are super clean and well functioning. I would still classify this bar as a dive, but a little more upscale without being filled with goofy skinny pant wearing hipster types and groupie wannabees.
The drinks are still stiff and reasonably priced and the selection is pretty darn good. You can get a nice buzz on with less than $30 for the night...and I'm not what you would call a "lightweight." In fact, I take pride in the fact that I have refined the craft of drinking without being a total sloppy lush after I've had a few. :)
The folks that frequent this place are pretty fun as are the bartenders. Sheila is a cool gal who remembers your face after just a couple of visits. I have had some interesting conversations in this joint and look forward to many more.
Pete's Place is quickly becoming a staple in my local dive bar regime! Good on you! -

Been here several times when I lived in the area. This can be summed up as a biker bar and for those born in the 60-70s.
If you are a local and frequent this place, you will always have great service and never have any problems with the regulars. But, if you are not a regular, bartenders tend to not give too much thought into how long you have been standing at the bar trying to order.
Major plus: Drinks are poured super strong.
Major minus: Expect to get hit on by older biker dudes. -

St. patricks was chill at petes, crowd is always clean and casual. No creepy crack heads at this bar. Juke box is loaded up Prices are Great.
one complaint bathrooms are to small, and no real food sold in here. If they'd just sell some nachos or something it'd be perfect!

La Mesa, CA
Good old Pete's Place, where everyone WOULD know your name if they weren't so pissed drunk. This bar has been in La Mesa forever and I remember seeing that martini glass on the side of the building when I was a little kid. I know my dad used to go here ages ago, as did my grandfather when he was alive.
A fun hole-in-the-wall dive bar full of colorful characters to say the least. If they are old, like to drink and live within walking distance, chances are Pete's is their watering hole of choice. They also have live local bands playing, which I've never seen myself but I hear it's a blast.
My buddy Griffin frequents this bar regularly and swears it's the best place on the planet to get very drunk on very little. This is my kind of watering hole as well. It's a little musty and dirty, but what else do you want in a dive bar?
When you are looking to get shitty without all the pomp and circumstance there is no place better than Pete's. Just watch that Art Madrid doesn't ding your car in the parking lot... -

My husband Jimmy Goldbach and I met on http://eharmony.com in 2006. We had our first date, first kiss, we even said our first "I love you's & a little "hunky-dory" at Pete's place.
We are practically regulars now !

I'm new in La Mesa and moved in just up the street from Pete's Place, so it's a natural relationship. It's sort of like the quarter back cheerleader scenario, only with less running and sexy bonfires. Everyone is welcome and fits in here, which is more than I can say about most bars I frequent, the mixed drinks are $3 for a decent pour that only seems to get stronger the more you're around, and total strangers are happy to span time with you.
The only real buzz kill is that they're closing tonight for 2 months of remodeling, so I guess that would make them the cheerleader. I'm excited to see some cosmetic surgery, but I hope she doesn't go too big with the boobs or too small with the nose.Listed in: The Places I Go Out

This place is awesome! The prices are amazingly cheap. Take $40.00 and a few friends and you can all drink on that for the night...Please note that they do not serve food there, just drinks.
The Juke box has a good selection and they have a couple of pool tables, and a few large flat screens for entertainment. The crowd isn't bad either and they keep the place really clean! :D -

San Diego, CA
I like a good dive bar, and I kept swaying between 3-4 stars for this place. The determining factor for me though was I asked myself, "would I go out of my way for this place," and the answer to that question was "no" unless somebody wanted to meet there, I lived nearby or I happened to stumble in. As such, they're getting 3 stars.
Make no mistake about it ... it's a dark, dank, seedy dive bar, and it's mostly La Mesa locals galore. In short, it's a total hole-in-the-wall. I've only ever been there while visiting friends in the area, but I've always had a decent time and have no complaints. The service is good enough and prompt. On occasion there are local bands putting on shows, but otherwise it's pretty much your standard dive with pool tables and darts.
I'd probably pickle my liver there if I lived nearby, but I wouldn't go out of my way for this place. -

What can I say about this place it's my #1 dive bar! Been a reg since 05? Will always be HQ. Love the regulars, bartenders, and owners. Drinks are cheap and stiff just how I like my men. Atmosphere is super fun and they bring in some good local bands.

Cool bar, lots of potential, I can tell they just remodled it or something.
My boyfriend and I stopped in here as we have been searching for cool bars in La Mesa, this one turned out to be just like the rest.
Nothing wrong with it if you like a really "locals & regulars only" type of bar.
We walked in and the bartender and patrons seemed to be very enthralled in conversation. When we walked in, the conversation lulled and everyone just kind of looked at us.
Maybe it was a bad day or something.
I just hate when places make you feel awkward because you haven't been going there three times a week since "87 or something.
Like I said this place has potential to be a really awesome La Mesa bar, but the bartender and the patrons on the day I decided to go was just really... lame. -

I ended up here on a Wednesday night. Not very many people in there, but fun nonetheless. When we first got in there it seemed difficult to get a drink (and not very many people around)...but once we got our drinks...everything was as golden as my freshly poured Stella. Pool was only .25 uh yeah! i love pool, so no complaint on that one. And the jukebox was super cheap too. The people in the bar were friendly. I dont live in La Mesa anymore, but I wish I knew about this place when I did. Cozy. Friendly. and to top it off cheap pool and pick your own music. Well done Pete's Place, well done!

alright, this is my new go-to bar in the la mesa area. i've been here a few times before but just recently started going back and i'm glad that i did.
if you're into dive bars, this is the place for you. there are pool tables, a decent juke box and sports on the televisions...but a big plus is the people that you find here. it's a quaint, dark establishment where you'll have to settle on a choice from the rack-o-chips if you get hungry, but it's cozy and always has interesting, conversation-worthy characters inside. if you go in at nighttime, you'll most likely come across stewie - an older gentleman who is always in costume (he was a pilot last time i was there...we slow danced to jethro tull.)
my favorite bartender is michelle (she is a real sweetie pie) but pretty much everyone is nice. they have a full bar and pretty cheap drinks. and they have pabst blue ribbon in tall cans and that makes me jolly.
go there and be merry. -

This is my favorite place to hang out, when I was on my way I got nervous about how it would look. wow, I cant believe pete's is finally open again. I went on the 2nd night of the relaunch and couldnt believe my eyes. It was so busy and looked so different I thought I was in another bar, then I saw the owner scott and he looked so happy and asked,"griff, where the fuck were you last night?" and i knew I was in the right place., so that got out my worries and jitters away, then I saw part of the inner sanctum with monte ,tommy, bill, and the rest of the gang and knew I was back in the right place. New look, but same bar, It was good to be home again!

Okay...I know I'm going to get slammed for this and I'm a local, but I just have to review due to the amount of times I've gone there and gotten a less than warm response from the bartenders. I've waited tables, cocktail, bar-backed, and was a bartender...I understand there are 'days,' but your there for a reason and people want to see happiness - not grumpiness or attitude.
1 time - okay bad day
2 times - hmm take a hard look at the person
3 times - not having it
Some are great (especially the girl who use to work there and was covering for a company Christmas party...loved her!). However, we went out on Wednesday night with my sister who had just graduated with her Masters and flew in to visit with my niece. So, we went out to celebrate (should of stayed at the first bar)...yea, we were drunk, but really didn't deserve our bartender interrupting a conversation that had NOTHING do with her and yelling at us. There was hardly anyone in there and I'm sure it can be annoying, but its a bar for goodness sake. We really didn't deserve her crap and it was embarrassing the first person to say I can't stand loud drunk girls or women, but it happens once in a great while...the bouncer was a sweetheart (who my daughter thinks is really cool too) and I think he understood were we were coming from, however, he obviously sided with the bartender and tried to calm it down. I took my upset sister outside to figure out our original dilemma and it was done. Too bad...it was a great night until we had to end it with that.... -

Pete's Place is a total hole in the wall. It's dark inside, and darker inside than it is inside when it's dark outside. The bartenders are friendly, the drinks are reasonably priced and the patrons are generally chill.
Save for tonight. After a couple of drinks and listening to some really obscure rock we decided to load up the juke box with some music. First song we play is Al Green's Love and Happiness, and immediately we hear this guy at the bar get all loud. He starts ranting about Obama and how the country would go into the shitter if he's elected. (How Al Green is a trigger for Obama, I have NO idea!) For those gentle readers who don't know me, let me provide some context: Olga is a 5'2 and clearly latina, while I am 6'2, rocking locks and of cinnamon mocha complexion. We start whispering, this guy is gonna start a riot in this place...haha! So what the hell...select a Bob Marley song, a Damian Marley and some other stuff. I had to get my CCR, Bad Moon Rising...not for the people in attendance, but because it's seriously a good song! If they had Bob Seger's, Like A Rock, I would be all about that!
Anyway, it was good catching up with Olga and I'll be going back to Pete's Place. They can't help attracting the morons they occasionally.
Oh yea, their bathroom, the men's at least is a shit hole - pun intended. lolListed in: Best Watering Holes in San…

I've been a patron since the days of old, dark, dank, musky, and malodorous, but I will say that'll do Scott, that'll do. Pete's is shiny and new and dang nab it I like it! I'm so relieved they have the same AMAZING staff (Sheila! Scott!), inexpensive drinks and now...extra room, ambient lighting and clean loos!

I have never given any place 5 stars. Ever. But if anyone knows me, they know I have a special relationship with Pete's.
I started going to Pete's 3 years ago. I went before the remodel. I loved it then. It was dark, homey, cheap, and had a certain smell. Low ceilings. I love it now too. Great new look, but same bartenders. Sheila and Matty are two of my favorite people in the world. The drinks are still really cheap, Jukebox is still rad. The bathrooms are so much better. Now when drunk chicks pass out on the can, the bouncer has more room to haul them outside. I have attended many holidays, and days of note there. Oktoberfest, Christmas, St Patti's, Buddy Blue, New years, and they all were awesome. I have brought friends to this bar, family, and made new friends. I have laid on the bar and done body shots, I have vomited in the parking lot. I have made really bad decisions, and really good ones. I am a regular, even though I live in another state now, when I walk into that bar, I am treated like I never left. That's why I love Pete's and always will. Because no matter where I am, or what I do, I know that if I want to have a good time, I can go there and it will never disappoint me. -

A great dive bar after the remodel. Pool. Strong drinks. Cool bar tenders. Music, but I say music with a little sadness. What happened to the rock music? Over the last few months that I can remember, Petes served up some pretty good rock bands. One band, 3 guys, I cant remember the band, but, man they were great. Cool ambiance, cool people, great band, dancing galore. ME AND MY GIRL MISS IT. Oh, well, I guess a juke box will suffice....for now. Go to Petes. It really is a cool place.

This is my favorite bar in town if you head down on the weekend you'll find a nice size pretty diverse crowd, the often have live music on saturdays,
Pete's used to be dark dingy dive bar, and i loved it. now its pretty posh which is still great because it retained everything i loved about the bar (good drinks great bartenders and not super packed) but its now a place i feel comfortable taking dates to.
I've often said that when i go out this is the place i like to go to so that's pretty much the readers digest version of my review.
the bartenders are awesome, very friendly and attentive
the drinks are cheap and well mixed
one draw back is they don't have a great selection of wines but since i don't drink wine that doesn't affect my review
This is also a great bar to visit during the week for a quiet drink as it is not very crowded during the week.
Bottom line if you ever find yourself in downtown la mesa this bar is definitely worth checking out.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Petes is my all time favorite bar in the entire world. There is no other place like it. I used to live up the street and it was my safe haven for years, Shelia is awesome . It would not be Petes if it wasnt for Shelia, thats for damn sure! Matty is rad, too.. and ofcourse who doesnt love Denise, but who knows if she is still there? I go at night and she worked days. Stiffest cheapest drink around the East County. I loved it when it was a smelly dingy hole in the wall bar, and I still love it after the remodeling. Its old and home but with a classier twist. Ive gone every year to the Buddy Blue Fest , its the place to be during Oktoberfest, and pretty much anytime you need to escape its perfectly dark and low key. Its the kinda place where if you wanted everyone to know your name, they would oblige. Although, you may not want everyone to know your name. I miss the days of Drunk Sunday Charger games with my sister at the bar. The old juke box used to be kickass and the new one aint to shabby either! Johnny & the Family at Petes are fan-friggin-tastic in my book. ALl in all I give this a 2 thumbs up , way up! Word to Stephne B & Tommys review !!

My second trip to Pete's Place was what really sold me on this bar. I walked in the door and was greeted with, "hihowyadoin'?you're21right?whatcanigetforyou?ther e'sfreefoodintheback, itschinese." Wow, auditory overload! It took me the better portion of a minute to figure out exactly what had been said before I could stutter out an order. Needless to say, things just kept going up from there. I made friends with an amicable Scot, a smack talking older black man, and a tweaker MILF over the course of the night. Prices were more than reasonable on a Sunday and I took advantage of quite a few $1 shots, which were a crowd-pleasers as many people offered to buy a round for the bar without putting a dent in their wallet. I knocked a star off because my next trip landed on the following Friday night and I didn't quite feel the same sense of enjoyment that I had previously. However, it's Sunday again and it's time for Chargers football. The potluck theme is NY Hot Dogs and I'm bringing potato salad!!!
