7 reviews for Petersen's Village Inn
This is my favorite place to stay in Solvang. I go there once a year for the custom knife show and this is where we stayed the first time.
The breakfast is top notch and the meals served in the dining room are so good, I often wanted to eat there in the years since, even if I was staying elsewhere.
The Petersen Village Inn is fantastic! My good friend and I booked king rooms there for the weekend of the anniversary of Edie Sedgwick's death (November 16, 1971). Ms. Sedgwick is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard, only six minutes from Solvang, so if you were a fan of the 1960s, Andy Warhol, or just want to visit the grave of a really unique historical figure, I'd suggest taking a quick trip to what is probably the loveliest cemetery in California.
I had room 314, and my friend had room 316. My room was slightly larger than his, with a charming canopy king bed, complete with a step stool at the foot of the bed to assist children at heart, like me, in hopping into bed at the end of the day. The decor is somewhat old-fashioned (remember when forest green carpet was "in"? Neither do I.), but that only adds to the historical, quaint charm of the hotel. The furniture (chairs and the like) are padded wicker. My room was spotlessly clean, although when we arrived after 2:00 p.m., my friend's room was just starting to be cleaned and readied.
Check-in was pleasant, as was dealing with the front desk when my friend locked his keys in his room. They were polite and made friendly conversation every time we stopped by the desk, so I'm not sure where the "rude" staff mentioned in other reviews was. The staff was great while we stayed there!
Speaking of the front desk, when my friend and I first got to the hotel, I noticed a sickly sweet, floral smell that I have always associated with death. I turned to my friend and said, "This place is haunted." After a day trip to the cemetery, we decided to go back for a night trip. My friend and I met in the hallway between our rooms. When I opened my door, there was a light haze outside of my door; my friend walked right through it. I thought that maybe someone in one of the rooms between ours had broken the no-smoking rule. I asked my friend, "Did you see that?" He hadn't seen anything, but as we got to the end of the hall, I turned around. "Right there...that haze at the end of the hall...you don't see that?" He walked to the end of the hall where I'd seen the haze, and the hair on his arms was raised. He followed his instincts and stood at the emergency exit to the left of my room. He got goose bumps and the hair on his arms stood completely on end. We turned and walked back down the hall, to leave the hotel, and I got chills in the middle of the hallway. We definitely think that there was a mild, benign spirit there that night. We didn't notice the odd floral smell the next day, nor did we encounter anything unusual at any other time.
The only downside at all was for my friend; he thought that the rooms should have had a coffee maker. I feel that this was quickly remedied by a quick trip downstairs for a WONDERFUL breakfast. There were pastries, fresh fruit, cereal, ham, cheese, and hard-boiled eggs, plus fresh orange juice and coffee. The complimentary dinner was awesome, too. We both ordered the salmon, which was perfectly seasoned. The mashed potatoes were to die for, and the carrots were something special. I find most cooked-carrot side dishes to be rather mundane, but these were just perfect. The restaurant's chocolate cake is exquisite.
I would highly recommend choosing the Petersen Village Inn when staying in Solvang. Two points of interest would be the Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard and the Talowick Candle Factory right down the road on Mission Drive.
Deserves all 5 stars I'm giving it and all 4 Diamonds AAA has awarded it! My wife and I decided to spend our 5th Wedding Anniversary in Solvang; and I spent a number of hours exploring Solvang's hotels on the Internet before I settled on The Inn at Petersen Village. Boy was I glad we did.
Located on one of Picturesque Solvang's main streets, the Petersen Inn looks like a quaint little dutch hostel on the outside. Our room was very nicely appointed with a fireplace, a big queen-sized bed with canopy, and a wonderful balcony view overlooking the back fountain courtyard and many of Solvang's quaint shops and wine tasting rooms.
The service was top-notch. The family-run hotel's staff was courteous and attentive. Coffee and hot/iced tea room service was free. The hotel even boasts free DSL Wi-Fi for its guests.
The hotel's Restaurant, Cafe Provence, is only open to hotel staff and guests - and the food was sumptuous and very well prepared. The service on the night we stayed was a bit slow - but the host more than made up for it when he noticed we'd been waiting longer than usual for our entre and asked if we'd like to share a compilentary bottle of wine - we agreed and was introduced to the wonderful world of Lucas & Lewellen wines. A delicious bottle of 2000 Chardonnay was more than enough to make us forget the slightly tardy service; which didn't matter much as the dinner soon arrived anyway. The best part is that the dinner was included with the price of our room package.
If you're in Solvang for a night or a week - make the Petersen Village Inn a place to visit or stay
A wonderful, picturesque hotel in Solvang. My partner and I had a great time at this well-kept and quiet forty room hotel. The decor is intimate and European. It is as if you are entering a different world, which is far more attractive!
A stand-out feature of this hotel is Cafe Provence, the restaurant limited to hotel guests. Dinners and a continental breakfast are included in the price of the room. It is an elegant dining room with a nice view of the village's courtyard. Once again this puts you in a different frame of mind. The food is hearty and consists of appetizers, entree (e.g., lamb chops, filet mignon), dessert and beverage. After each meal, I felt like a beached whale!
I wish that I could give this hotel five stars. I had to knock off some points for lack of pool / jacuzzi and exercise room. The staff was very attentive and tried hard to please guest, but they were not up to the standards of an elite hotel.
Highly recommended and a good value. A great place to unwind from the hectic SF life.
This place pretty much sucks. Before checking in, my associate asked to use the restroom and was greeted with "are you STAYING here?" Answering in the affirmative got no courtesy whatsoever. The snooty service continued from there. I was there to do the solvang century, which pretty much everyone is there for this particular weekend. Walking my bike thru the lobby got me a derisive "you didn't have that thing in your ROOM did you? I hope not, because the owner would go BALLISTIC!"
Oh, you mean he would turn into a missile, fly to Iran, and blow up the nuclear reactor? That could be viewed as a positive I guess, so I kept the bike inside a while. Bitch.
Didn't eat at the restaurant, despite the freeness of the dinners, as it was 99% meat-based, except the token fetuccini w/ vegetables (no thanks).
The room was 80s colonial english knock-off, done cheaply, with a lot of ersatz gold/brass hardware and floral pink wallpaper.
Worst of all, there was no jacuzzi. Hella lame.
For $300+ a night it blew.
Super expensive place. Amenities and service do not match up the price they charge. There are much better places to stay in the area with better price and better service.
WOW! We stayed here for a night under their Wine Tasting Package (which we didn't even do). The dinner is outstanding and was covered by the cost of the weekend. We would easily pay $80-100 for a dinner like this for 2 at a standard restaurant. The continental breakfast was great. We would have been happy having seconds there rather than getting crepes elsewhere. I'll definitely stay there again and recommend this place to others.
