Not a bad diner, good service from sassy old waitresses.  There is ample seating, so you could come with a large group.  On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday they have cheap meal specials, around $3.99.

The food was a little blah, not bad, but not very good either.  Coffee is a little expensive, something like $2.25.

There was some homeless guy outside asking for money for  a meal, some guy gave him $5 for a meal, the homeless guy went inside and ordered a meal to go, after the guy who gave him money left, the homeless guy went back up to the counter to cancel his order and get "his" money back.  The waitress refused because the meal was already cooking.  He became really agitated and was screaming.  The manager came out of his office and told the guy that he knew what was going on and that he  was not going refund the money, but still offered the food.  The homeless guy became agitated to the point that I thought he was going to start throwing punches.  The manager finally refunded the money.  Point of the story...homeless people don't use money for food, only booze and drugs.

Peter's Grill is the one place I absolutely NEED to go when I'm in Minneapolis?  Why?  I'm not exactly sure.  The food doesn't blow my mind.  The experience isn't exceptional.  The decor isn't remarkable.

For whatever reason, I absolutely adore this place.

Peter's is surprisingly large when you walk in, but it never seems to be at more than 40% capacity or so.  The wait staff is friendly and seems to be exclusively made of women over 60 years of age with Minnesota accents.  They'll seat you, ask you if you want a paper, and then bring you back a paper with multiple sections missing, a slight inconvenience for which they will apologize.  The decorum is straight from the 20's (some of it literally is).

For an out-of-towner like myself, it's just so damned charming.  A juicy, gooey patty melt with fries followed up with homemade apple pie a la mode?  YES.  Please.  I will not pass up an opportunity to eat at Peter's.

We came here not too long ago and had good time. Our server was a character - something out of a movie. She was great.

I had the turkey club sandwich, which was ah-ok. The hubby had chicken salad sandwich, which was out of this world since it was made with fresh chicken breast. The soups were good too.

We love this place, love how huge it is, and love the fact that they still celebrate that Bill Clinton ate there.

So, I went back and ventured into the Fried Chicken.  If you do this, bring some friends.  When reviewing the menu choices for sides, notice closely the placement of  "or"and comma.  You get sides, soup, bread, salad...  It's crazy.  Plus a half chicken, fried very well and pretty tasty.  No sticker for me on this trip, but at least I take comfort in the fact that next time, a friend or two and I can eat off of one order of deef-fried chicken goodness.

I am such a big fan of greasy-spoon diners.  And yet not such a big fan of Peter's.  I really can't remember a good meal I've had here.  And not a chicken fried steak in the whole place.  WTF?

Bill Clinton ate here.  Which I guess is one thing Peter's and Monica Lewinsky share in common.  But it's not that much of a compliment: as we all know, he may be the best President of our generation, but that man would eat anything.

This is a kind of retro-feeling dressed up downtown diner.

It is meant to feel, I guess, like you are back in the imaginary "good times" of yesteryear where everyone had a white picket fence, a car in every garage and a chicken in every pot.

In any case, it's one of those sandwich, salad, soup places.  Not a bad place, but doesn't quite make me want to wear a fedora and go singin' in the rain.

I don't know why this place has the reputation it does.  The cooks are surly (and rude to the nice servers!), the management is apathetic, and the food is completely unremarkable.  The only vegetarian option I found on the day I went was a mere grilled cheese sandwich on small white bread slices (they sure weren't liberal with the cheese) with a side of potato chips.  I don't normally hold a lack of veggie-friendly menu items against a place, but along with all the other strikes against it this puts Peter's Grill right in the toilet.
