I went to Dr. Silver after being without a dentist in the city for far too long (don't ask how long). I was recommended by a friend and co-worker who noted that he takes our insurance.  I am SO GLAD that I went to Dr. Silver!  Before this experience, I can honestly say that I HATED the dentist.  I hated the drilling and the pain and most of all, I hated the judgement.  I've inherited pretty weak teeth, even though I take very good care of them, plus I grind HARD, so dentists are always quick to denounce my behavior, even when I follow all of their directions.

Not Dr. Silver. I went in the first time because I was having terrible neck and jaw problems.  I feared that maybe a tooth had become so infected that it had spread elsewhere (as I've heard tales of).  He did an X-Ray and told me nothing was infected, just that my constant grinding (exacerbated by anxiety from my recent move to the city) was straining my jaw muscles.  He consulted with me about options, going so far as to list the prices out, with and without insurance coverage, and letting me choose what I thought was the best treatment based on his information and advice.  As Dr. Silver likes to say "I don't work on you, I work with you."  That seems to be the general philosophy of the entire office.  They tell you exactly what's going to happen, offer you options if they exist and never fail to deliver on what they promise.

I got a bite-guard based on Dr. Silver's recommendation and my neck and face problems are NON EXISTANT.  Moreover, the encouragement of the hygenist has my gums and flossing routine in better shape than they've ever been - you really WANT to impress them every time you go in because they're so encouraging.  I highly recommend Dr. Silver and his practice.  They are kind, honest, pain-averse (unless the cirumstances are extreme, I've had minor cavities and holes treated with a drill alternative that's FAR preferable to rote drilling).

Plus, they play awesome jazz in the office and I hear Dr. Silver can bust out some tunes himself.  All in all - go here.

Still the best; I went to Dr. Silver for a second opinion today because the diagnosis and treatment plan that was given me by Callen-Lorde's dental clinic really disturbed me. The dentist I saw--never the same one twice--told me I needed 3 (!) extractions and would have to have a "flapper"--but don't worry, I'd get used to it.

Dr. Silver examined my mouth, looked at the x-rays, and said I needed two root canals and no extractions. Not great, but I questioned why the other clinic hadn't detected anything six months ago when I got x-rayed. He said I was right to question what the other dentist had said; keeping my teeth is a priority of mine.

In the words of Frank Zappa, "Always get a second opinion."

Dr. Silver is the face you want to see when you are in the middle of a dental nightmare which is the world that I emerged from.

I am writing you as a survivor from the deepest most hellish corner of the pain world. How I got here:

I had some major dental work done in California, and because i was too numb, I couldn't tell her that my bite didn't meet properly. After two weeks in NY, the pain in my head didn't stop, opening the entrance to hellish migraine headaches.

Dr. Silver heard my complaint, got me in for an appointment the NEXT MORNING. He has a beautiful office in Washington Square Park which was very relaxing to walk to. He was genuinely concerned at the amount of pain that I was in, gave me cool sunglasses to wear and told me in detail what I was about to feel, what was going to happen.

Almost IMMEDIATELY, my pain was gone. I have to go back for a couple more treatments but I am very happy and beyond satisfied with his experience and expertise. He is such a sweet man with a nice voice, and totally down to earth, he's a jazz musician, so he is empathetic to emotions and especially--pain!

He prescribed me drugs, and he or his assistant called me everyday to see about my progress. This is by far the best bedside manner I've experienced EVER in doctors and dentists, and I've had some really angelic people care for me in the past.

Highly recommended especially if you need stuff done that you've been putting off for years, he will give you a new dental lease on life without tears.

Full Disclosure: I'm 100% biased, because I met Dr. Silver through the lovely and talented Jessica F, so I already knew him before my first appointment.  But hey, how often do you meet someone at a party that you would trust to scrape around in your mouth?  Don't answer that.

Best dentist ever.  Yes, really.  Utterly painless.  I'm so used to having dentists fumbling around and doing something that feels like a continuous brass knuckle punch to the gums.

We're totally on the same page about dental care; I don't want any mercury in my mouth, and Dr Silver doesn't even do those kinds of fillings!  He should change his name to Dr Composite or something, because he don't use no silver!

He charges a fair price, and fully understands if you need to opt out of something that is too expensive for your budget.  No guilt involved in any aspect of the process.

All my friends were jealous when I told them he called to make sure everything was alright, and that I get text message updates from the guy!  He's going to be on TV soon for his state-of-the-art pain management technique.  If you have any apprehension about going to the dentist, this is your man.

Excellent.  I think I lucked out again with dentists.  (see http://www.yelp.com/bi...).

Dr. Silver is an outstanding dentist.  The entire experience visiting his office was helpful, informative and never did they give me even a twinge of guilt.  They were even complementary--"You have very strong bone structure!" (referring to my teeth).

I needed a dentist in NYC so I turned to none other than YELP for assistance.  He was able to get me in for an exam and cleaning within  3 days of calling and then was able to schedule me in for some follow up work the next day!  They didn't take my insurance, but my insurance covers out of network equally, and his office staff was more than happy to file the paper work for me.

He explained to me, as I was lying down on the tempur pedic padded exam chair, that with patients, he tries to put himself in their shoes.  But he actually took this to heart.  He and his staff took time to clearly explain every single procedure to me, the tools that they were using (even the scrappers, picks--plastic vs metal--and other inane details) and were very aware of how comfortable or uncomfortable I was.  The hygenist, Rosalind, who has over 30 years of experience, puts a topical analgesic on your gums before the cleaning and exam, just to make the process a bit less painful (literally).

He utilizes all of the modern gadgets like digital photos, digital x rays and charts, laser tooth analysis (to check for cavities, instead of a dental pick), and ozone (non-invasive, for treating cavities?).

The freebies were great and real. Glide floss, a real oral B tooth brush, an oral B flossing tool (he highly recommends over floss), colgate toothpaste and, for my sensitive teeth, a 4 month's supply of MI paste--a recalcifiying agent that helps to cure sensitive teeth, which is $25 online, by itself.

They do free invisalign consultations as well (take impressions, ship to invisalign, get results)--a procedure most DDS's charge for.

Dr. Silver is a jazz trumpet player and plays the likes of Miles Davis and others off his ipod in the office.

It's completely worth it to go to dentist who you can trust...and there are a lot of shady dentists in the city--one friend had a tooth porcelain crowned for no reason and Paula T. had a terrible experience with a Midtown dentist: http://www.yelp.com/bi...

So really, the only thing I've had better from a previous dentist was receiving a birthday card signed by then entire staff with a bunch of scratchers....but that's asking quite a bit and my birthday isn't for 6 months so we'll see...

I found him quite pushy.  Went to see him based on a friend's recommendation.  I have pretty healthy teeth, but at that time I had a problem with a small infection.  He uses fancy gadgets all right... and then he was telling me all the problem with my infection and that I can get brain infection or something (don't you love it when doctors scare the sh*t out of you?).  And then he told me to buy some really strong pills (that gave me severe side affects).

He was also pushing for me to get my wisdom teeth removed - which to me is annoying - I don't like doctors insisting on surgery when there's nothing major to be dealt with.  I had to go back for a follow-up, and when he found out that I did not take all the pills, he showed his dismay.  My problem went away - and he does not seem happy about that either.  Rather unpleasant experience.

I prefer doctors who do not rely on gadgets (cleaning teeth need not require laser) or pills, and have more faith in, uh, human body, natural food, and common sense.

Dr. Silver, the jazz dentist (he plays trumpet in bands at night), rules! Here's his website... http://www.jazzdentist.../

He's a total techie and up on all of the hottest gadgets like electronic x-rays, lasers, and a non-tickling teeth cleaner. He doesn't give you any guilt about how long it's been. You get sunglasses to block out the bright lights and a warm face towel after he's done. He makes you feel like a human being, rather than just a mouth, and lets you know exactly what he'll be doing BEFORE he does it. I really recommend him. He takes insurance.

I just have to say that I am terrified of the dentist, to the point where I've avoided it for years.

I searched for a dentist that would do sedation (i had a broken tooth- and there was NO way I was going to be coherent for this procedure) - and Dr. Silver (aka The Jazz Dentist) came up. The testimonials on the site were great and I made an appointment.

Best dentist experience ever!! Dr. Silver was super nice and made me feel really comfortable. I don't remember a thing from the procedure, which is what I wanted! I had a sedative drug and nitrous, and went through a 3-hour procedure, and came out of it with minimal pain - just a little soreness for a couple days.

Highly recommended to anyone with dental phobia. The Jazz Dentist will make you actually excited for dentist appointments. I'm serious.

Everyone in Dr. Silver's office is absolutely lovely, and I have recommended them to every person who's ever asked if I know a good dentist.  All take the time to explain exactly what is about to go on, whether in your mouth or with your bill, and have always answered questions as thoroughly as I needed them to be.

Great experience for a task that is not high on the list of "fun" things to do!

I've got to go with Shawn on this one. I found him and all his staff rather pushy myself. I've gotten used to this in NYC over the years, but I was a little surprised just because of all the great reviews on here. When I questioned issues he was pushing me to get done(a patient questioning issues?) he was defensive, and short with me, and pretty much just shuffled me out. Perhaps he was having a bad day.....
Will I go back? Meh....with all the dentists in Manhattan, surely I can find a place where the fancy gadgets aren't the driving force behind unnecessary procedures. Then again, this is Manhattan....I may not.

Dr. Silver and his staff are really good at putting me at ease. They are efficient and pleasant...they also have nitrous for those of us who prefer to have it. They try to make every procedure as comfortable as possible and are clear with everything. I'm generally nervous with going to the dentist, but have found that I hardly even need the nitrous for anything anymore! Dr. Silver is patient and willing to work with you. They put a great deal of effort into both the way they keep up with the most up-to-date technology and the way they respect their patients.

Seriously Dr. Silver and team ROCK! I'm a huge P*SSY when it comes to dentists, but the Doc was patient, described all the procedures, options and pricing (no sales pitches) and were able to fit me in short notice. Dr. Siver's techniques and calming nature eased all anxiety. Pricing is actually really good, I use to go to two dentists a few blocks away who charged 1/3 more. As soon as my insurance kicks in I'm definitely going to be a regular.

You'll be taken care of here.  A dentist who LOVES his job, and has pride in his work (your mouth).  These two characteristics should be enough.  But wait, there's more.  He's GOOD at his job, he keeps up with the latest dentistry technology.  But wait, there's more.  His staff is friendly, and he has a great sense of humor.  ("close your mouth and think of puppies"), and there is actual music in the office. Not Muzak, but music.  Good music!  But wait, there's more.  PAIN MANAGEMENT.  No pain.  nope, nowhere to be found.  all different kinds from topical to mind-expanding.

So, everything gets fixed, and you feel better.  Then comes the bill.  Well, he's not cheap.  But you get what you pay for, and my last dentist was cheaper, but most of his work needed to be redone.

I told the folks at Dr. Silver's office that it had been 8 years without a checkup, and I had started to notice a few spots on my teeth which were sensitive when I touched them.  Dr Silver and his assistant, Roz, checked me out and said there was no problem, and that it was normal for someone my age to get a little sensitivity along the gum line. They said that some people are just sort of cavity resistant, and that I was lucky enough to be one of them, but that I shouldn't press my luck waiting 8 years again for the next checkup. I think I was lucky to find a dentist that runs such an honest business -- they could have milked me and I wouldn't have known the difference. I got out of there buying nothing more than a standard cleaning and some x-rays. Incredible. The office had a really nice, pleasant, happy atmosphere too.

nice guy sure, but definitely a salesman.  he charged me $600 for a filling (and yes, all the fancy technology talk included) and the filling broke after 2 years only.  i couldnt believe the price but was in a bind to get the filling fixed since and i didnt have time to take off from work to see my trusted family dentist  2 hours outside of NYC, so i agreed to pay this price hoping all that fancy technology talk would make this the best filling ever!
i just got dr. silvers filling fixed by my family dentist for $138, and i know it will last at least 20 years.

I went to Dr. Silver after reading reviews about him here, and simply put, everyone was right in saying he is great. Incredibly calm and patient, he put me right at ease when I went in there to get not one, but three cracked teeth fixed. Everyone in the office is warm and kind and helpful. Their email and text message reminders about appointments are particularly useful. But most importantly, Dr. Silver's work is professional and attractive (remember, we're talking about three seriously messed up teeth), and he is just a really talented dentist and a really warm person. Have already started recommending him to friends.
