I decided to change my dentist when my old dentist kept me waiting every time for 15-30 minutes for no apparent reason, and gave me drama when I refused unnecessary treatments.
Peter Farmer is the business. I had the most thorough check-up I've ever had a couple of weeks ago, followed by a thorough clean from Michael the hygienist.
Peter advised me to have a wisdom tooth out, which I had removed yesterday. I had no pain during the procedure and the wound is tidily sutured. Peter called me personally later in the day to check on me.
Peter and Michael will give you a very personal, friendly, caring, skillful, and thorough service. Go see them.
A chipped front tooth my dentist couldn't see me for (2 week wait?! I can't run around snaggle toothed that long!) led me to Dr. Peter Farmer's practice. Denise at the front desk was so kind and helpful. Dr. Farmer's assistant JoJo was very considerate. Dr. Farmer was professional and absolutely wonderful. I had a thorough exam. He made sure I understood everything before we started and that I was comfortable throughout the procedure. Gentlest, most pain-free fix I've ever had done. And Michael, the hygienist, gave me the best cleaning/teaching session I can recall all while listening to a great playlist from his iPod. Thank you Yelp for helping me find a new dentist.

Dr. Farmer is a nice guy but he doesn't listen and is out just to make some cash. i had a tooth ache so i went in to have it looked at. they took a full set of x-rays since it had been awhile since i had those done. all cool with that.
i told dr. farmer i don't enjoy sitting in the chair and just want the tooth in question fixed. after looking at my x-rays he said i needed a crown on the tooth that hurt and a crown on another tooth the other side of my mouth. i told him again i would like only the hurt tooth fixed and that i was cool with the other tooth and i didn't want that one fixed.
so he then told me to go to the lobby and make an appointment to have the work done. while doing this he gave me a form or whatever it may be called with the cost involved for the crowns. yep he was still trying to have me get a second crown. i said i only wanted the one tooth fixed. he said i should have them both fixed in his opinion.
so i agree with another reviewer of dr. farmer doing work that doesn't need to be done. out to make more cash for himself instead caring what the patient asks for. i should give him only one star. but he does have all the shiny cool up to date new stuff. so if throwing money away is not a problem and you have a love of that chair and all the drilling that comes with it, i say head on over and he'll take care of you.
i went home and thought about it and made an appointment with another dentist who i will review next. using the x-rays from dr. farmers office she told me all i needed was a filling. i had the filling done and my tooth ache is gone. my new and good dentist said i didn't need a crown and i didn't need anymore work done. she said see you in 6 months for my next cleaning. now that is what I'm talking about.
just thinking about this makes me very angry thinking i could have spent a few hundred dollars more for unnecessary work. beware.

For the first thirty years of my life I saw the same dentist and hygenist every six months. When I moved here nearly eight years ago, I didn't know what to do about my teeth. But somehow, quite luckily, I happened upon Jennifer Creelman. Jennifer and her staff are awesome. Going to the dentist's office is like visiting friends who care for your teeth.
Jennifer is very knowledgeable and her technology is state-of-the-art. My only complaint is her dislike for wisdom teeth, but I think she has learned to accept that mine are here to stay.

Dr Creelman, you'll end up calling her Jennifer is fantastic. Her office is uber clean and modern. You are getting all the latest in dental care. Her office even emails or texts you appointment times/changes that you can confirm with the click of a button.
Dr. Creelman will digitally map your mouth and from there on out track all changes to your teeth, gum line, etc. She is also very good if you are a bit of a nervous nellie about dental care. I am not but I do have close friends who are and they swear by her.
Her staff is very friendly and know what they are doing. Dr. Creelman is always on time and is very good at preventative care. This is hands down one of my best doctor experiences.
I had my first visit with Dr. Farmer and had a great experience. I received a thorough exam and cleaning without it taking forever. My biggest pet peeve with dentist/doctor appointments is when I arrive on time, but have to wait 20 minutes or more to be seen. This was not the case here. A couple minutes after I arrived I was seen by Dr. Farmer.
The hygienist also was great; efficient, but gentle. While mildly stern regarding my flossing habits, he was not gloom and doom. He didn't force me to look at horrible pictures of tooth catastrophes.
The office is spotless with all the latest technology. Everyone who works in the office was really pleasant. Very service oriented. All in all, a painless experience.

great location in the Castro. well I guess it is great if you live there like me. Jennifer is on first name basis with her clients and she is really fun to interact with. she walks you through the procedures and issues and explains what the heck is going on. she also takes measure on making sure your insurance covers things for you and if they don't she gives you the head's up. and she calls you personally to see how things are after a procedure. oh and if you need gas to ease the anxiety of a procedure she isn't shy. nice folks at the front desk. the dental hygienist was extremely nice but I feel like some of the tools/techniques are stuck in the 90's. or maybe dental technology really isn't advancing beyond a metal sharp hook that they scrap across your teeth repetitively. I mean really.
I just got back from my first appointment with Dr. Creelman and I have to thank all the Yelpers here for the tip. Everyone in the office was very personable and genuine - a sharp contrast to the eye doctor appointment I went to this morning (also on a tip from Yelp, but unfortunately not as successful). The staff took interest in me as a person and not a customer and that's important to me - especially when receiving health care.
The office was modern without being focused on gadgetry. I once went to a dentist in the Embarcadero Center and he scanned my x-rays into his palmtop Vaio while allowing me to be entertained by a handheld DVD player. Dr. Creelman and Farmers office was classic and clean, but was definitely outfitted with very modern machinery. (I could even see my x-rays on a wall-mounted screen as soon as the shot was snapped). The space is a bit small (two seats in the waiting room), but that's probably because hardly anyone is ever queued long to get in. The receptionist said the doctors were late today because of other tardy patients, but was called back only 7 minutes after scheduled - mostly because I think Jennifer was taking time to chat with a couple of "patients" - a term she herself describes as synonymous with "friends."
Most importantly, Jennifer was very professional, through, and precise with her oral examination. She even took time to check out my jaw (i injured it several years ago) and was the first doctor to give me good advice on how to care for it. She even was more considerate of the injury during the exam than I am on a daily basis. I also liked how she carried out the exam tag-team with an assistant. It feels nice to be looked after by multiple people, and it also reminds me of how my childhood dentist (the best I've ever had, though Creelman is off to a good start) worked.
All in all, I can't imagine anyone not having a great experience here. If you live in the neighborhood (Mission, Castro, or Lower Haight), then it appears you'll also be making friends with some very cool new people that also happen to know a lot about teeth.
UPDATE: I found these dentists to actually accept a wider range of coverage than others I polled - so for my Delta Dental plan (which is pretty standard), all preventative and most other expenses are covered. I had no problems corresponding by phone to set up an appointment; in fact, I think their receptionist must be one of the best in the businesses.

Dr. Farmer is just wonderful. He always has the most gentle touch when it comes to my teeth. I have been seeing him for 2 years now, and my boyfriend has been going there for five years. They are always very nice and professional, and very accommodating when it comes to scheduling visits so my boyfriend and I can be seen at the same time. I loved their old front desk assistant David, but he left and a new lady took his place. She is very nice also.
The prices may not be the best, we get stuck at the end of the year usually with a bill of expenses our insurance hadn't covered, but since Dr. Farmer has made my teeth be the best they can be, and my boyfriends teeth have gone from bad to beautiful, I can say that Dr. Farmer deserves 5 stars because he is so knowledgeable, nice and professional! The office is really nice too, with very up to date gadgets and equipment, and comfortable and calming atmosphere! A great place to go if you hate the dentist, because they have everything you there to make a person feel better about going.
I have always been scared of the dentist, I guess till this day I still am but I recently went to see Peter and he was extremely patient and gentle with me. Over all staff is very nice. I love the fact that they email me my appointments and reminders (I'm always forgetting stuff). The office is clean (but thats probably because our family business cleans it on a weekly basis). I've been to many dentists but none like Peter Farmer.
Dr. Creelman, or Jennifer - because she has only allowed me to call her by her first name - is the sweetest dentist I have ever been to. I hate going to the dentist, I think most people do, because it is almost never a plesent experience. I had to go to Dr. Creelman because I needed my two wisdom teeth removed. I was in extreme pain and she got me in as soon as I called. I thought I was only going for a referral to an oral surgeon, but instead she insisted that she would be able to do the extraction herself. She prescribed me all the medication I needed in advance, and even called the pharmacy herself so it would be ready for me by the time I walked next door and I wouldn't have to wait in line. When I came back for my surgery, she was very professional and efficient. She did the whole thing very easily and quickly. I was lucky because I had no swelling at all, the bleeding stoped in a few hours, and I was able to eat solid foods the next morning! I know this is not normal for wisdom teeth, but I also have to thank Dr. Creelman for doing such a wonderful job. She called me personally a few days later to see how I was doing and if I needed anything more (i.e. meds, etc) and today at my follow up appointment she got me in right away on my lunch break so that I would not miss any work. In addition to her personal professionalism, the office is equipped with the best digital x-ray machines and other high tech equipment. The office is extremely clean, and each chair faces a big window so that you have a nice view while you're being worked on. Dr. Creelman is very thorough and I will definitely make her my regular dentist.

Why are so many SF dentists clustered downtown in Union Square? Peter Farmer and Jennifer Creelman have wisely gone to their customers and located their office in the heart of the Castro / Upper Market neighborhood. It also doesn't hurt that their hours are extended on many days (early mornings and late evenings on different weekdays), and that their office is a showplace of high-tech design. Dentists Peter and Jennifer are both professionally exacting and very patient-oriented -- my initial visit was very thorough. Hygenist Rich is friendly and careful. I would give them 5 stars, except that phone calls are more often answered by voicemail than in person ... though they are very speedy in calling back.

With out a doubt the best dentist I have ever had. Dr. Creelman is friendly, intelligent and professional. All the staff is extremely friendly and very good at their jobs. I'm actually happy to have a dentist appointment. I had to have several cavities filled and a root canal and I was in no pain during the work.

all dentists are evil. if i meet you and you tell me your a dentist, i hate you. they torture and maim innocent people and get paid for it. practicing dentistry should be illegal in modern countries. that being said, this office rocks. and jennifer isn't so bad. on the phone making the appointment i expressed my displeasure at the impending visit and was promptly prescribed valium and told "it's more like spa than a dentist office". so i picked up my valium and walked in ready for my foot rub and facial. it wasn't quite as promised, but it wasn't horrible. jennifer was REALLY great with my views on dentistry and was patient and compassionate with my anxiety. she even attempted gas during the cleaning but i was worried she was trying to kill me so she could do illegal experiments on my teeth so i held my breath. she made me a mouth guard for teeth grinding at night, something my marriage was about to end over. only it cost 600 bucks because insurance didn't cover it. but at least i'm still married. and i might even go back in january. but i still hate dentists.

Peter Farmer is a fantastic dentist with a great bedside manner. They even give you sunglasses so you don't have to deal with that damned dentist's chair lamp.

Dr. Farmer is great! Friendly and thorough. I love the digital x-rays - eliminates all that unneccesary radiation exposure, and it's cool to watch! I only wish they were on the insurance network - I end up shelling out at least an extra $30 per visit :(
I fist went to Dr. Creelman years ago when I first moved to SF and had a tooth emergency. I found the clinic she was then working in the Yellow Pages. It was a funky San Francisco large clinic and she had just started out and was paying off her student loans. The thing was, she was such a great dentist and a great person. I kept going back to her and just ignorded the clinic situation. We both used to laugh at the place. I refered her to many friends and business associates who had the same experience. She really made it work for us all.
Since then, she has her own practice with Dr. Farmer. She's "earned" a good client base who continue to make good referals. I still seem to have these tooth emergencies and she has me in within 15 minutes of my call or has even meet me at the office on the weekend. She's attentive to "no pain", is proactive and always sensative to what is cost effective. She undestands that people work hard for their money and she is more concerned about the long haul patient relationship rather than making a quick buck. I know she's "worked" with some of my friends who also are starting out as she's been there and is looking for the long haul.
The office staff are great and there doesn't seem to be a turn over. The office is in an easy location, is very hip and with good energy. Most all all, she's a great dentist and person and really knows her stuff.
Dr. Farmer is a great dentist. His office/equipment are clean and state-of-the-art. The staff members are super-friendly. I've recommended him to many of my friends.
