I can only give this place an average rating (3 stars) because they ARE a big box place, and therefore, far from perfect. But I have been going here for many years, and they do have a ton of stuff. I don't buy most of my dog and cat supplies here, although I did notice that they do carry the cat food the kitties eat. We do occasionally get dog and cat toys from here, as sometimes you can get them on sale inexpensively, but beware, I do often see toys that are made in China, and I have to assume that since there have a been a number of problems with CHILDREN'S toys from China, that the pet toys aren't safe either.

Where Petco really comes in handy is if you have a fondness for critters which are neither canine nor feline. There are not many places that carry gerbils, hamsters, birds, fish, etc. or their supplies.

For many years, I got my fish and aquarium supplies here, as well as a number of things for reptiles, and never had any problems in those departments. We no longer have finny or scaly critters, but we do have a hamster these days.

Part of the reason Petco doesn't get a better rating is for inconsistency in what they carry - I bought hammy an Ovo Habitrail here, only to discover 6 months later when I needed parts for it that they no longer carried the product line anymore. Other than that though, we do pretty well getting hamster supplies here.

Also, I have always found their customer service to be acceptable. I don't think I've ever had a really unfriendly person help me (although I don't know that everyone there is as knowledgeable as they could be) and when I needed to return a dog crate it was absolutely no problem.

I was here awhile ago to buy some supplies to take care of my sick goldfish.

The girl teaching me how to use the vacuum tank tube actually put her lips around the tube and sucked on it and then gave it to me with the intent to sell it...ummm ewww I dont want to put my mouth on that now..thanks though.

oh and my fish died :(...hahah...petco probably couldnt have saved my wal mart feeder fish...he was 6 years old.

I called Petco in Ballard at 2:30 in the afternoon to make sure they had a certain product.  They told me they had it and would hold it behind the counter for me when I could come in later that evening to purchase it.
When I arrived at 8pm, the employees said they had been out of it for over a week, and they had just ordered it today.
What a waste of time. Go to a different location if you are looking for something specific.

I took my dog at the Petco in Ballard to get her nails clipped... I am not going into details of what happened there, but after they were done she was bleeding all over the place! Petco is a great pet store, but when it comes to nail clipping make sure you go to somebody who can do the job!!!!

EXPENSIVE!

I've ended up here a few times over the last few years - it's close to my house - and sometimes I need something not carried at the grocery store.

I always remember it being over-priced - but I rationalize the convenience - "it couldn't have really been that bad - could it have been?"

then I walk in the door - see something I know the common price of - and I'm like "no effin way - they want how much????"

if you have a "membership" card -  you'll pay really expensive prices.

if you -don't- have a "membership" card - you'll pay completely and totally outrageous over-the-top prices.

seriously - check their cat litter prices - then go to fred meyer.  you will be disgusted.

This review is for the grooming department.

Several Sundays ago I woke up dismayed by the whiff of dog and floating hair bunnies when I turned on my furnace.

Yes, I assure you I DO clean my house.  But I have this big German Shepherd mix that is blowing her winter coat and it's just nasty even though she is the most perfect dog ever and I love her to bits.

I'm always surprised by the cost of the self-serve dog-wash on Greenwood ($20).     If I have to wash my own damn dog I'm certainly not  going to pay $20.  I'd rather pay a bit more and have someone else do it especially if they use those awesome dryers that get all the extra hair out!

I needed dog food and treats anyways so I ran up to Petco at 11 AM.  Eri (groomer) said she had an opening at 1:00.    Great - I'll take it!    By 3:00 I had a perfectly clean and fresh woofer so cute even my pet hating mother would approve.

Eri was great.    She gave me a full report on how well my dog did (including nails) and a TON of her winter coat had been washed/blown/brushed away.   She wasn't overly perfumed either.  Thanks for a FABULOUS job!

Most importantly, my dog was very relaxed and happy when I picked her up.  She has Addison's disease and I can always tell if she gets stressed because she gets explosive diarrhea.   (Yep....see my review on Honda of Seattle for THAT unfortunate story.)  No problems at Petco - she was happy as a clam.

I'd love to take her in every 3 weeks or so but at $45/pop including tip it's probably not going to happen.   Petco bundles the bath with other stuff like the nail trim which I can do at home.   I wish there was a bath only option.    In all honesty, the bath at the vet is a bit cheaper since I'm not expected to tip, but at  the same time I don't get instant service like I did at Petco.

Anyways, sincere thanks Eri for a fabulous job!

Oh....one last thing.....PETCO - will you PLEASE get your grooming department a cash register?   It's ridiculous to stand in line at the grooming office to get your dog only to be given a ticket which you have to take back up front to the register, stand in a long line on an Sunday afternoon to pay, then take the receipt BACK to the grooming office and stand in line again to get your dog.   You are losing a star for this.  I'm sure your groomers will agree.  They were standing there with my dog in hand waiting for me to return from paying (which took forever).   What a waste of everyone's time.

This is an establishment that qualifies in my family as a "po'boys pettin' zoo" in that you can go pet and view animals here for free. We also play "zookeeper" when we gently roust the beta's to make sure they're still alive in there.

What I love most is being greeted by the cut out of Ceasar the dog whisperer. Something about his impossibly perfect grill makes me happy. I think that his goodness and talent is represented in those teeth of his. And it makes me ponder the reasons the world is a better place now that we whisper at man's best friend and not just horses. If Ceasar has kids I hope he figures out how to whisper 'em, because I could really use some straight forward advice about them, too.

Bah on the dog collar that promised great things..

And by great things I mean a gently 'you're not supposed to be barking anymore' sound that was to be emitted when the little sweet, but slightly vocal Chihuahua makes more than just a little noise. Damn thing went off for no reason every few seconds and the pup didn't seem to give a crap.

Three stars for the helpful staff and the Halloween costumes. If you've never seen a dog dressed up like Elvis, just you wait. Lucky for us, they had a tiny white and gold pants suit in an Extra Small.. complete with a tuft of black doggy chest hair.

Beyond hilarious, I'm tellin' ya.. and you'll eventually see what I mean.

This review is for the fish lady.

I've been longing for a companion. A puppy. Unfortunately, circumstances do not allow for me to have one and that makes me very sad.
A friend of mine surprised me with his recent interest in getting a fish and asked me to come along to pick his out. I've never really considered myself a fish person, but went along anyway. When we started looking, I got very excited. So many to choose from and so pretty.

"Cici, a fish would be perfect for you."
"I think you're right. A perfect little buddy."

We must have been there for an hour laying out all our fishyland goodies, making sure it was just right., and bombarding the fish lady with all kinds of questions. She was a patient woman and knew all the answers.
I'm happy to say "Pup" is alive and well, and providing hours of entertainment...and he knows tricks. For real, he's a genius.

This is where I go all the time to get my turtle supplies for my turts and the lady (sorry don't know your name in the aquatic department has tatoos I believe) is amazing...she knows everything and is so congenial i love her!

The manager there is a nice fellow I just recently met him  because my boyfriend bought me their adorable Dusky Concure for Christmas I love him so much!  I ended up naming him Yahtzee!  Shawn just in case you are wondering he is doing wonderfully and he doesn't even mind me touching his tail feathers... I will bring him in once it gets warmer! He is doing fabulously I hope you have found a new little birdie to love and care for!

I 'd get a few things for my poochy but she is allergic to corn, wheat and soy and their inventory is limited so I have to go elsewhere for that... Please start carrying Solid Gold and I will be happy... The University Petco does but only small bags!

Anyway this store is great and I love to shop there I believe their choices are pretty great under normal conditions and the people are extrememly friendly!

I gave 5 stars in spite of having to go elsewhere for my pooch but I would also love for Petco to offer special order/sizing of fish/turtle tanks.

By the way if anyone is ever wondering about pets and you see the red earred sliders they have buy a couple they make fabulous pets and are fun to watch... I didn't get mine there but if I didn't already have two I would certainly but one from them... mine were a gift.

Any way this is a great store and I never have problems and the other people that shop this store are also very nice it is a pleasant place to just hang out and shop!

LOVE IT!!!!!!!

For the last month and a half or so I've been putting of getting my cat a lion cut despite the fact that she has been shedding all over the place and coughing fur balls at an alarming rate. It seems that there are just not that many places that do cat grooming in Seattle and the yelp reviews I was reading about places seemed to be alarmingly polarized. I checked with my vet to see if they did grooming and they did but it was crazy expensive.

I finally started calling around and decided to give Petco a try. The woman on the phone was nice and patient and answered all my questions. I've just gotten home with my slightly freaked but newly foxy kitty and I have to say I am very happy. It was very reasonable ($60) and Zelda looks like a little lion. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because her "mane" is a little uneven. But she's a happy kitty and I'm a happy kitty friend.

No, I don't love the ferrets or mice or fish on display, and the ambiance is, shall we say, minimal, but the employees have always been friendly, resourceful, and attentive to me and my pup.  They may have a lot of junky stuff for sale, but they have good quality, all-natural stuff too. Then I can still afford to buy special treats from some of Seattle's other wonderful pet shops.

And if you have a puppy who is demolishing toys left and right (as they should!), then Petco is a financially responsible place to furnish his or her chewing habits.

I get my dog groomed here and have only gone here so cant compare it to much.  I love the affordable prices and special packets. My only complaint is that it does take like 4 hours and I don't like to leave my dog anywhere for that long.
Lisha and her staff are incredibly nice and do an excellent job. My dog always comes away happy. I do have to say that my dog is pretty good and doesn't really freak during baths or haircuts so they probably have an easy time with her.   Anways, I also ask to have my dog's nails dremmeled rather than cut-it doesn't hurt as much as a nail cutter and they do a great job and offer a good deal.
I also love the Luv My Pet Vet Service that comes on Saturdays.  They offer affordable shots.

The only thing Petco is good for is a cheap toy, and that doesn't usually last very long. A lot of their foods have bad stuff in it, and most of the humans there don't know much about it. I think the only thing my person has ever bought there is cat litter, and it wasn't for our cats, because it had perfumes in it. Yuck.

They do have kitties in cages though. What's not to love about that! Though my person feels bad for the kitties in cages, but she says they are waiting to get forever homes. So go save a cat from a cage.

Grooming
OK, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the grooming services at this Petco.  I sent my dog, Bailey, in for "the Works"  ($40) which includes deep conditioning, shampoo, nail clip and teeth brushing.  The workers were all super friendly and did a great job.  Bailey is all spiffed up and she seemed to like the workers too.
Did kind of take a while, I dropped her off at 10am, and they called to pick her up at 1pm, so plan some errands in-between.
I don't normally spend money on real grooming- I am more of a wash her in the downstairs tub kind of person, but worth it for a special treat.

if you are looking for a guy that TRUELY loves to work with pets and you need to trust a man with you pet to trim nails etc. well then go to petco on Holman Rd. and meet ADAM!!! My little dog Raggs is very picky, as well as my self and we love Adam because his service is above and beyond anyones expectations. Adam is the only person that I have handed little Raggs over to for nail trimming and Raggs comes back Happy and had not one shred of fear....which means alot to me. I have also had the pleasure of meeting the woman taking care of the fish....outstanding and full of information in that dept. I have also met Edith(Edy) and she is also very into pets and full of information. I prefer to shop in the smaller stores to support my direct local community but when it comes to nail trimming....Adam is the king. He will also inform you of his background of experience if you ask which is impressive. Thanks Adam for your dedication to keeping out pets happy!!!

I brought my dog in for grooming (first time I've groomed him outside so I don't have anything to compare to). He had some matted down fur, and was due for a wash because I've let him romp around at the dog park a little too much. I dropped him off around 10 am and they said it would take about 4 hours. I didn't get a call until 4:30.... which annoyed me a little, because it ruined all other plans I had for that day. BUT, for $50 they did do a great job trimming his fur (he looks much smaller), is overall much whiter, fluffier and cuter. They did an awesome job!

the staff here are rude and angry. they all must live in some kind of illusion where they think they work at the dmv. its a friggin pet store, relax a little.

i just wanted to see if one of the baby ferrets was a biter, and this woman (if you could call her that) acted like i had just asked her to recite the declaration of independence while juggling hamsters. this place gets no more of my money.

Arrrggg.  I am so done with this place.  I have no choice but to come here, because I have a ferret, and most of the specialty pet stores in the area don't cater to that particular species (I know that my fuzzy little friend is the fastest growing pet in America, but apparently some people don't recognize a new market when they see it...)  Anyway, my beef isn't with the staff, which is knowledgeable, stocks the best ferret chow, and always gives my little buddy tons of attention when we bring him in, but with the other pet owners.  We've been bringing the fuzzball by once a year to have his vaccinations at Petco's low cost clinic, and every time we've had to stand in line with all the other "low income pets."  The problem is that their owners are the biggest nutballs in the city!  I won't even go into detail about the weird behavior that I've seen at the Petco clinic.  Suffice it to say that most of the humans there act like they are the ones who need a distemper shot.

i called the ballard petco to schedule a grooming appt , and the lady on the phone and asked me tons of weird questions, like who was his vet, when was his last rabies vaccine, etc.  i didn't know when he was last vaccinated since he's indoors, so i just guessed.  so then, i get a call back from someone else at petco about 15 minutes later, informing me that she had called my vet, and my cat was actually overdue for his rabies vaccine, and did not indeed get vaccinated when he was last in at the vet in february as i had said!  i couldn't believe it!  they actually went behind my back and CALLED MY VET to ask!!!!!  my cat and i no longer shop at petco.
