We have met the enemy, and they are ours. Those famous words by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry at the conclusion of the Battle of Lake Erie, after defeating a sizable British Fleet in the War of 1812, guaranteed control of the Great Lakes for the American Navy and probably went a long way toward assuring victory and an eventual truce in the larger war. It also established an unbroken stretch of peaceful relations between the US and Canada which has remained unbroken ever since.
This 352 foot Doric Column stands on an isthmus on Ohio's South Bass Island in the village of Put-in-Bay and is the 3rd largest national monument in the country, after the Washington Monument and someplace i don't remember. It stands on American soil but from its observation deck you can see clear into Canada across the lake, and onto Pelee Island, Canada's sole island among the dozen or so small and large islands here in the western basin of Lake Erie. As a monument both to the US victory and the peace between Canada and the US, Canadian flags fly at the site next to the US flag. The open air observation deck is a delightful experience if you're not afraid of heights and is the highest open air observation deck in the National Park System. As kid (and even today) I am afraid of heights, but the thick stone ballustrade somehow made this view tolerable to me and I loved visiting this place.
At the foot of Perry's Monument lies the miniscule business district of Put-in-Bay, where locals come to party, dance topless on the flybridges of their cabin cruisers, and drinnk way too much beer and cheap island made wine. Best bet is to take in the monument and the spectacular view before you surrender yourselves to the arms of the angel of beer.

This place was ridiculously cool. Besides being 12 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty, there were great panoramic views of the island. The Park Rangers working here were very knowledgeable and did not hesitate to answer any questions. For 3 bucks it was definitely worth it, and it is an excellent tribute to the peace shared between Canada, Great Britain and the United States.

Perry's Monument is an impressive monument on South Bass Island in Put in Bay. The monument stands out on the island and can be seen from miles away on the water, as well as the surrounding islands. It is run by the National Park Service and sits on 24 acres on an isthmus on the island. You can park your golf cart in front and walk in. The "lobby" is impressive. From there, you walk up a flight of stairs to get in line to take the elevator to the top. It cost $3 per person older than 15. From there, you take a minute long elevator ride to the top. Inside the elevator, a park ranger gives you a quick overview of the monument and the rules of the observation deck. Once you hit the top, you walk up a short flight of stairs and you're on the observation deck. The view is impressive. You can see all of the surrounding islands, an aerial view of South Bass Island, and a view that goes as far as the David Besse Nuclear Plant in Toledo (and that was on a hazy day, you can probably see further on a clear day). You can even see up to the Canadian islands. There are maps to guide you on what you're looking at, as well as a history of the War of 1812 and how the monument came into existence. Overall, if you're on Put in Bay and want a history lesson, a great view, or just something fun to do outside of the bar scene, head to Perry's Monument. It's worth the low price of admission.
