I like my bike.
Our man at Performance was super intuitive and realized right off the bat that I was way more interested in the color of my new bicycle than how the freaking gears shift. Nuff said.
Great no-pressure sale. Gave a couple of bicycles a test spin around the store. Chose the one with the color I liked over the souped up ride with all of the technical blah-blah.
We heard about their service policies, for the lifetime of the bicycle. Great! Their 10% back on the purchases made that day. Great! I'm going in tomorrow to redeem those points on a lock, fenders, and lights. Super! And they are going to install my new gear for me. Sweet!
Their mechanic put the tune-up on it while I picked out my snazzy new headgear. And I was out the door!
I am a fan until further notice!

When a customer can ride a few laps INSIDE the bike store, you know its spacious.

Don't get me wrong, I like my neighborhood bike stores, but sometimes I want to be able to have some personal space at a bike store. This place was cool to check out during their Holiday sale. I'd say they have a good variety of brands for their items. Definitely I will be back to pick up few items here and there in the future.

What a great spot!

Best prices, best selection, best service.   I got (everything except the bike) I needed for a triathlon, and they were so helpful.

I love this store.

It's okay for some cheap stuff.  But really this is like the Walmart of bike shops.  Go to a real local shop instead of a national discount chain store.

You get what you pay for.

The folks are uber helpful. They took the time to explain to my wife what shoes are good for spinning and for $10 more you can use it for outdoor activities as well. They even installed the cleats.. If I knew how to ride a bike, I would buy one here to give a spin. My wife is stoked though as she'll (we'll) be definitely back to scope out a bike for her in the future once the spinning gets tiresome..

It's all fun and games until you actually leave Performance Bike...

I bought a Fuji road bike here about 1 year ago. I signed up for their "Team Performance" discount (pay $25 for 10% off) and saved some money. Great. About a month later, I started receiving courtesy calls to my cell phone. After the 10th obnoxious caller, I demanded to know where they sourced my phone number. Performance Bike. Sneaky sneaky, making that 10% back by selling emails and phone numbers.

It was equally difficult removing myself from their mailing list. Despite frequent online "unsubscribe" requests, I still received their daily barrage of cheap bike helmets and atrocious jerseys. I finally had to call HQ. If they were so unscrupulous to sell my cell phone number, I'm sure they just gave my email address away to the first spammer. Or preferred partner, excuse me.

Last bit of bitching. They renewed my "Team Performance" subscription without my consent or notifying me. I found out I was a 2009 card-carrying member when I checked my credit card bill. Awful.

I just can't support a store that makes the post-retail experience absolutely miserable.

I like this place...

Everything is easy to find, plenty of room to 'test out' the bikes and other products.

Prices are reasonable to moderate and can get pricey.  They do have decent sales though...;)

Parking's a cinch.  Customer service is excellent as they totally know what the hell they're doing. :)

And we were getting a 23-year-old her first real bike...that we still had to teach her to ride...lmao...

I've been shopping at Performance Bikes for years now - Atlanta, Colorado, Seattle and now SF.

If you are buying something with a big price tag (a bike or an upgrade) joining their Performance Club is a great deal - $25 and earn 10% on all purchases. You'll make the $25 back and the have a great credit to spend on all those other things you just can't live without!

I recently had to have my bike in their service center and was fully expecting to pay for the work they did. The guy went out of his way to not only fix my bike, show me what I did wrong to break my bike and then tell me it was on the house!

I went back today (no, I didn't screw up my bike again) but I needed some supplies to fix up the "Lady K's" bike. The bike dude that helped me again was over the top - helped me find what I needed, explained other options and then rang me up.

While I'd like to support a "local" bike shop, I haven't found one like Performance!

Stopped in this week while hunting for a new 20" bike for my birthday boy.

Upside: the gentleman who helped me was super friendly and told me all about my options if I should want to place an order. They only carry a few models of kids' bikes, but sounds like they will order just about anything you want and match the price.

Downside: they only had one model of 20" boy's bike in stock, and I didn't want that one. The aforementioned ordering process was quoted at 7-10 days, and sadly I didn't leave myself that much time. Also as a minor note, getting in and out of the parking lot during rush hour wasn't much fun.

Probably wouldn't be my first stop for a kid's bike in the future... but: (a) they did have lots of adult "real" cycling gear and (b) I did find a better selection of kids' bikes at another Performance location.

It's really shocking that they manage to stay in business.

It took quite some time to get some help when I went it. I finally picked out a bike, but they didn't have it in my size. They found my size at another store and said that they would have it sent over to the SF outlet. They were supposed to call me when it came in.

Five weeks later, no call. I go in again. They seem to have lost the bike. The salesperson couldn't believe it. The manager was clueless. They promised they'd check with the person who does the receiving and call me back.

Another 3 weeks go by. No call.

When I go in again, there's a new guy who says "Yeah, that's happened with a few bikes. But I don't remember anything about your bike."

Let me begin by saying that I am a newbie when it comes to biking. Having said that, Performance Bikes fits my needs. I was not looking for anything high end, and found a hybrid that was reasonably priced for commuting. The staff person who helped me out was very friendly and knowledgeable. I hadn't been on a bike for over a decade, and he was very patient with me as I attempted to circle the store trying bikes out.

Love that they have an actual lot to park which makes it super convenient when you travel with a toddler around the city. The store was very spacious and because my husband had signed up for their regular customer card, we earned a $60.00 credit towards our next purchase (having spent around $600.00 for my bike and a few accessories). Unfortunately, they did not carry the Chariot child buggy that I wanted, but found at Mike's Bikes instead.

I got my bike here couple of weeks ago. The guy (Jason, I think) working there gave me a weird look when I was trying to ride a bike in the store, because I was so clumsy. The first thing he asked was, "Do you even know how to ride a bike?". Hahaha. Well I do, I just needed practice, and not in a store. But he was very helpful, He told me what fit for a bike was right for me, and mentioned a good deal on the bike I was trying, which was $100 less than it's price listed.

Good deal for a bike! And they always seem to have sales, which I'll definitely use my new Performance Bicycle membership ($25) for!

The store is big, and is full of good, and I would say very well priced bikes and components.

But here is some advice: I didn't like the fact that when I was there and asked for a bike component, the person that was helping me tried to sell me the highest priced product, and also tried to put me in a "bias" towards things that I didn't need. My "shark" technique consists on appearing as a lost dumb shopper when I actually know very well what I am going to buy (Hey salespeople, there is something called Internet out there, you know). Then I can judge if the sales person is someone you can trust or not. Some are great, others are bad. I want to believe that here we don't have a bad case.

I will come back because of the prices, nevertheless.

If you buy parts & equipment there, its fine.  Prices are pretty decent, though their inventory isn't quite as good as their online shop.

DO NOT GET ANY MAINTENANCE THERE!!

The staff are;

- Rude
- Rushed
- But greedy!

They won't turn down a project because they want your money, but they won't spend the time to fix your problem properly.  They are also brusque about it.

If you can't handle a repair job -- don't blame the customer for bringing the bike in!!

After hitting 3 other bike shops in the city, I'd have to say Performance Bicycle shop was so-so and borderline A-ok.

The staff were very helpful but they didn't seem that knowledge-able.  Won't mention any names, but I definitely noticed a difference in bike expertise at the 2 other shops I went to.

They had some decent road bikes for women but not too many in my size so I had to end up trying a few of the guy versions just to see about the longer length.

The one cool thing about the day I went in was that they were having a no-sales tax special and they did mention too that the bike I was looking at (the Fuji Roubaix 54 cm) had some sort of unlimited tune up plan where I could bring it in any time for the life of the bike vs only a 2 year bike tune up program at Sports Basement.

I can't promise they will honor that program, all I'm saying is that it wouldn't hurt to ask about warranty and bike tune up in the type of bike you purchase....because it seemed like they would 'take care of you.'

Its a good shop, it just didn't meet my needs, but the staff are friendly.
They seem more like sales floor guys vs hard core bikers though...just my experience.

I was recently given a bike for free by a co-worker.  I don't know why he gave me a bike to begin with, i never really gave any signs of any interests, but hay, who am I to turn down a free bike... i can possibly ride it around Lake Merced or Golden Gate Park.  When i received it i noticed that the condition of the bike was questionable.  Rust, seat, and deflated tires were the main problems.  I really didn't know where to go but like Aphrodite's Bosom, a sign pointed me to this new 'Re-Opening' of a shop.
The people inside were helpful, the amount of cycling gear was like going to a toy's-r-us, but for gear heads, and the help... well all i can say was top notch.
I was put to shame immediately as soon as I entered the doors, the sight of all these fresh new bikes and clean surroundings and the contrast of an overweight man with a rusted bike was too much of a cliche but I went in anyway to see what can be done with this lost cause of a bike.
I was helped a jolly man... lets call him Thor, and Thor did his best in seeing that all the parts were replaced and even gave me tips in eliminating most of the rust.  At the end of the transaction he gave me a brochure on what that site also has to offer, Bike repair classes, community info, and all sorts of stuff.
This isn't just a bike shop, this place is deeply involved with the community and is all about teaching and informing the new people that are getting into the hobby.
I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in or getting back into biking.  Now if you don't mind... I'm going to take my bike out for a spin.

WOW.. nice prices on gear and components but you'd better be able to work on your bike yourself! these "mechanics" are THE WORST i've ever dealt with in all my years owning cars, vans, trucks, bikes etc. i mean all of them are really really terrible. great prices, but don't expect anything more than Wal-Mart caliber bike "mechanics".

Decent selection of road and mountain and hybrid bikes (most of them range from $399 - $2,000).
GREAT selection of accessories in the store and the prices are hard to beat...even online!

Jaime (Mgr) and Justin are the main dudes in the store that I dealt with.  They were both super friendly and helpful with all of my purchases.  Jaime really went above and beyond helping my wife and I get the right equipment for our bikes.

FYI - Just understand that bike stores can suddenly get really busy and that the employees have to "spread their time around" with everyone!

They only carry Iron Horse, Mongoose and GT mtn. bikes.

Props for having middle range bikes that are affordable for the average joe.

I have my eyes set on a Iron Horse 7Point....hurry up stimulus check! I need that last $600!!!!!! I've been here more times than I can count.  They carry my favorite powder drink mix (Clif Electrolyte, crisp apple with caffine) much cheaper than anywhere else.....

Staff is mellow and knowledgeable., parking is convenient, worth checking out.

I would have given this place 5 stars if only they had a bigger staff to answer more questions.  However, I like the guys here very much.  I bought a bike that should have cost me $1159 + tax to $811 + tax and i bought a performance card.  For this price, I couldn't have found a better bike (except for maybe bikes direct and even then i'd have to put it together).  I absolutly love my Fuji Cross bike.  I've been in this shop atleast 4 times before I bought my bike.  I was never rushed or anything like that.  The guys here are patiant and chill.  The prices on bikes are really competitive.  Oh yah, my bike came with free gearing and brake adjustements for life which is a nice touch.   You will not get a professional fitting wiht your bike however.  These guys aren't paid on commission so don't hound you to buy a bike.

I'll never forgive my mother.

The last time bike I owned was around the age of 13.  When all the other kids were pop-locking and breakdancing, I was doing freestyle bike tricks on my BMX Mongoose with the Jewish kids from around the street corner.  It was completely outfitted with a rotor that allowed me to spin the handlebars around, pegs in the front and back to do bunny hops, and mag wheels.  When I left for college I expected that I would leave my precious bike in good hands, but when I returned home one summer I found that my beautiful two-wheeler had been thrown out in the trash.  I'll spare you the details, only to say that it involved divorce, a vindictive mom, and an uptight stepdad.

So when I got a new bike this Christmas, I was completely elated.  Instantly, a whole new world opened up to me.  No longer burdened by four wheels, I am now able to navigate like a hungry cheetah through the mean streets of Downtown SF.  But still, I had to make it my own.  So I took it over to Performance Bikes for some customization.

"Yeah, uh, I'd like a phased-plasma rifle in the forty watt range."

"Hey, just what you see, pal."

So I settled for a new helmet, lights, a cargo bag, a rack, and a lock.  They allowed me to try on everything in the store and even helped me screw on the rack to make sure it fit.  The helmet was missing a part and I brought it back the next day for an exchange  without any problems.

As a kid, I envisoned my future self as a badass with a Black leather jacket riding a Ducati with some chick with a mini-skirt and awesome ass-cleavage on the back.  Now I'm the 220 lb. guy riding a hybrid mountain bike throught the streets of San Francisco listening to a Sex with Emily podcast with a bag of fresh blueberries I just bought from Whole Foods in my backpack.

Show me your cool, and I'll redefine it.

Some of my funnest memories as a child were on my little huffy bike.  Unfortunately, I also developed my irrational fear of snakes from riding my bike on a dirt path where a snake crossed my path and entangled itself into my spokes - shiver shiver.

At any rate, my brother has maintained an extremely healthy relationship with his road and mountain bikes.  His passion for biking, and fitness in general, is quite contagious really.  But I'm, quite literally, just not built like him (He has like 1% body fat)!  I accompanied him to Performance Bikes today (we usually hit up the Redwood City store but found ourselves in the city today).

I really appreciate the open industrial layout of this branch.  Cool skid marks on the floor, mellow & modern soundtrack and just very well-laid-out.  The employees today were friendly and efficient.  Their service dept. was in full force.

Excellent inventory of biking apparel, spin dvds and bike trail books & dvds.  Nice array of sunglasses, too.  And you know I always appreciate a couple of clearance rounders in the back of any store.

They also have their "red phone" booth where you can order from the Performance catalog and have it shipped to a branch if it's not stocked in one of their stores (so you save on shipping/handling fees).

Ron is the manager of this site (I'm told he's very knowledgeable and cool.  He's also got a very cool set of dreadlocks!).  Aside from him, everyone else appeared to be competent in how they provided service to the other customers.  A pretty specialized store for someone like me who doesn't even own a bike anymore, but I liked that my experience at Performance Bikes can still be fun and friendly.

Free parking in their outdoor lot for about 5 cars + 1 handicap slot.  And of course, free parking for bikes!  They have "lunch specials" at this store on weekdays b/w 12-2p.  Also, conveniently located for a quick exit to the 6th street on ramp to 280 South.

I had gone to REI to use the rest of my dividend on some new slicks for my mountain bike. It turns out that the only ones they had in stock are $28 each. They might be great tires but I wasn't willing to spend that much.
I went down the road and thought I'd stop in at Performance Bike to see what they have. I was in luck, they had Ritchey Tom Slicks on sale for $16. Perfect. I also got a computer that was on sale for over 60% off. You can get some great deals here when they are having a sale which is pretty much all the time.
You can join their Team Performance club which will give you some additional discounts too. If you choose to join I'd recommend paying cash for the membership because they automatically renewed mine one year without my authorization. I got refunded within a few days but still was kinda frosted about it.

For the trip to Northstar for mountain biking, Matt needed a new helmet to protect his cranium, plus a couple of his friends needed some other necessary accessories for a safe bike ride.

The store has a sale on Giro Helmets. One of the sale helmets that Matt bought was the Giro Encinal helmet. The helmet costs originally $80.00, but it was on sale for $34.99. The silver and black helmet looks really nice, but does not match Matt's patriot-color bike, a'la Captain America. The experienced staff was very nice and gave all five of us a free water-bottle for our visit, which came in perfect for our mountain-biking trip.

Definitely a great place to buy a bike, hands down.  The selection is enormous, the staff ultra-helpful, and if that weren't enough, there's actually enuf room right in the friggin' store to take any of the bikes for a spin. Heck, you can screech around that place (almost) to your heart's content; there are black tire tracks on the floor to prove it!

Oh, and the prices are VERY reasonable.  There's always something on sale, and our sales guy was definitely not pushing anything.  In fact, he really gave us the upside and downside of every single bike we looked at.  And my wife LOVES her new bike.

On top of that, we signed up for the Team Performance card, which gives you discounts a go-go, both in-store AND on-line.  Plus, there's free parking and really a plethora-galora of parts and pieces that you actually need:  locks, gloves, fenders, ad infinitem.

Shopping for anything bike-related?  Go here first, you won't regret it.

I'm not much of a bicycle expert, but I've learned that there are "bike stores" and "bike shops."  Performance is definitely a bike store.  They have good prices, but so-so staff.

The sales guy I talked to last time in there was high.  And he was not a functioning pot head.

On the upside, early September is a great time to buy from these guys because they have great "end of season" sales.  Keep an eye out for coupons and 15% off marked prices sales.

Been a 'Team Performance' member for several years now but, until this place opened in SOMA, I did most of my shopping through their catalog (a new one of which seems to arrive in my mailbox every couple of days!) or their website.

In years past, I've dropped in for a periodic tune-up, but I just went in yesterday evening to have them troubleshoot a wobbly back wheel. I walked out of there knowing that my bike was in very good hands with Ron and his service staff. Ron was incredibly helpful, thoroughly explaining everything that would need to be done, line item by line item, and not in some over-your-head cycling terminology that would be hard to follow (like an auto mechanic might try to do). He also came off as not trying to tack on additional "hidden" charges just to have his company make an extra buck. I just got the sense from him that he was going to do everything that needed to be done without sneakily making the final invoice climb higher than I might have originally expected.

Can't wait to pick up my bike later today!

One minor thing: the small parking lot right off of Brannan out front could be tight to navigate if you have a big SUV (which I don't.....just sayin'). Five spots and one handicap spot. Street parking (ample) might be your best bet.

3/21/07 update:
The bike is SWEET. Ron is the man.

I recently purchased a killer new bike from these guys, and I think they messed up on their math, because I went in prepared to pay about $480 and I rode out having paid $310.
(Ummm...)

The bike crowd seems to be to much like gear-heads for me. Can somebody please translate what the HELL they're saying??

Good fast service and 10% off everything for the next year, sure...I'll go back again.

Don't really know how to rate this place.
Let me begin by saying that I'm kind of a bicycling aficionado, I ride every day. Not commuting, I set aside an hour or two of my semi-valuable time and ride off-road every day. So yeah bicycling is important to me. I know what's good and what's not, and how much everything is supposed to cost.

They don't have top of the line stuff in stock at Performance Bike. And that's OK. 'Cause most of their customers are not looking for top of the line stuff, they are looking for cheap stuff. And Performance Bike has the cheap stuff in spades. And they web price match. Think about that.

You can shop around for stuff online and find the best price for it.
Then you go to this shop and if they have it, they sell it to you for the same price that you can buy it for online. That's good service, and you're of course more likely to buy other things from them that they can make a profit on.

So yeah in general I'd say it's a good shop.
Not the sort of place where I'd ask for cycling advice, but the sort of place where I'd stop to check out the cheap stuff.

I came in here the other day with my beater to replace the tubes and tires.  I tried like a total loser to do it myself, going off what I read 6 months ago about changing bike tires. Several of the employees helped a little here and there, when they weren't busy ringing up other customers, and eventually I gave up and paid for the $10/wheel service because I was clueless and running late. The guy who ended up taking care of me was Will, who was very helpful and not at all intimidating, like other bike mechanics sometimes are.

I was initially planning on going to a bike shop closer to home, such as Valencia Cyclery, but I needed to buy a headlight and wouldn't have had enough daylight to make it anywhere else after work. I'll probably stop by a few more times on my quest to fix up my bike -- but I'll spend the most time at the Bike Kitchen to save $$$.

In a fit of energy last weekend, I decided to tune up my road and mountain bikes. Everything went fine with the road bike. It was when I got to checking the tires on the mountain bike that I discovered that there were maybe, oh, a thousand or so little pin holes in my tubeless tires. The selling point of tubeless tires is that you'll get less flats. Au contrair mom frier, or whatever Bugs Bunny used to say, I had two pincushions made of rubber that I had to replace. Searches on the internet revealed it would cost me 50 bucks a tire after shipping and taxes. So on Monday morning after turning a token bit of work, I took the trolley down to and hiked over to this store. There was one choice and only one choice, the cashier told me, but he said he would take 15% off. So, 80 bucks later, I strolled down 4th street to the station and back to work. I love the price, but if you want uber attentive customer service, this isn't the place.  You have to know what you want and look for it. Kind of like life for most of us.

I am out in San Francisco working on a 2 month long project.  I decided before the project that I was not going to commute back to New Jersey every weekend.  In fact I ended up spending the whole month of February on the West Coast.

One weekend a friend of mine came out to visit and we both went skiing even though I had hurt myself skiing in Tahoe in January.  Even though I was skiing in pain I had a good time.  However, I decided that I was going to take the weekend off from skiing and do something different.

I really did not want to do tourist type things since I have done them all on previous trips and I had pledge not to be a tourist during the two months I was in San Francisco.

I discovered that Blazing Saddles rented  new Fuji full carbon road bikes and I decide that I was going to get my legs in shape by riding across the Golden Gate and up into Marin County.  This was a great plan except I did not have any cycling clothes with me and really did not want to spend a lot of money either.  Since the bike was not going to be cheap ($64 a day).

Enter Performance Cycle.  This worked out well since I was able to buy cycling jerseys and tights at a budget price.  I even bought some $54 3 pin cycling shoes (this was probably a mistake since I have not worn them again.  I should have gone with the SIDIs.)

I even bought snacks to stuff in my pocket for the ride.

I found a Performance Cycle in Richmond, VA and I picked up a nice wind breaker for $44 including tax.

In the end the two days I spent riding turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip.  Performance Bicycle helped me blend in with the other serious cyclists over the weekend.

No way I could have afforded this place for a new bike. I got one off of Craigslist for way cheaper, the only caveat being that it doesn't have pedals. The dude who sold it to me recommended I go to this place, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

After walking my bike through the scary freeway underpass type area,  I arrived to a completely empty bicycle emporium. No sales guy, and a dude on his iPod in the bike fixing dungeon who doesn't even look up from his wrenches even after my bike falls over when I tried to lean it against the counter.

After searching for a couple minutes I find a guy and he shows me over to the pedals. My heart sinks. 200 bucks? I don't even have those annoying bike shoes! Then I lookeda few racks down and found the 15 dollar all-purpose platform pedals that would probably be scoffed at by the spandex-wearing elite. These were exactly what I was looking for. When I get rung up I found out they were only seven bucks, then when I asked how much to put them on they said they'd do it for free. Two minutes later I'm ready to hit the road. I think I'll take my bike back there to get it all checked out, tuned up, straightened, tightened and aligned  and generally have them make sure the thing won't kill me.

I'm only taking off a star because there were no employees to be found when I walked in, and he didn't seem to interested in telling me anything about the product. Otherwise their selection was huge, they had something for every price range and they weren't really jerks, they just seemed pre-occupied.

Update: Holy shit! I just got back from my second trip, and Will was the most helpful dude I've ever run into at a bike shop. He was totally understanding of my lack of knowledge, and helped me get exactly what I needed. He even gave me some pointers on installing my new tires! If you visit this place, try and talk to Will. He'll get you set up and won't try and sell you the most expensive stuff right off the bat. My rating goes up a star because of this guy.

GREAT customer service from Jamie. Very knowledgeable, patient and friendly.  it was kinda hard to find someone who worked in the store for a while but once we saw Jamie free at the register, he was willing to help me and my sister with questions. Also, he was willing to help us even though the store was closing a few minutes and even offer to test drive the bicycle outside (just give your ID and credit card). We ended up leaving with a bike that was reasonably priced especially with the instant rebate ($50 off). The perks of purchasing a bike here, you get free lifetime adjustments to your bike. However, if you need new brakes and etc - they can also fix it based on their service rates.

Performance Bicycle also carries a wide range of cheap to premium bikes, helmets, tires, cycle gear and etc.

thank you!

This is a fantastic spot. Low attitude on the employees, and the guy I worked with (Calvin) was simply AWESOME. He picked out several bikes, adjusted them perfectly to my height / leg length, etc., ran them through the shop, let me test ride them multiple times, then patiently waited for me to select shoes, a helmet, etc. Suggested rides, showed me on the map, MAN - talk about a FULL service experience!! The guy is great, and the other employees seem fantastic too. They are low pressure, they love riding, and they love helping other people get into (or back into riding).

Highly recommended!!!

This shop has the nicest and most helpful staff of the 5 or so bike shops I've been to in SF. That's huge for the female consumer and the others just don't get it.

The prices rock! Their memebership program allows for discounts and 10% credit for next purchases. I've spent hundreds in gear here.
What more of an endorsement is needed.

Man, this place is like the Kragen for bicycles.   The have a lot of accessories on display and when I was there, they had lots of sales going on and the stock is well organized for display.  I don't really look at bicycles that are for sale, because I own three of 'em, but I do look for is what I can use that relates to riding and they a plenty.

The even have their own parking lot for drive by visits.  Haven't dealt with 'em for repairs yet.
