after talking about going for many weeks, yelper heidi n. and i made it here friday night for dinner.
stars alone for the fact that it's BYOB.
we each tried a personal pizza. heidi went with the spicy pepperoni, and i tried the quattro staggioni. the waiter said they were individual pizzas, but damn were they huge! we could have easily split one and been comfortably full...but then there wouldn't be gooey leftovers.
unlike any quattro staggione i've tried before, my pie had toppings mixed on every quadrant. and as a bonus, it had a wee lake on top - the fault of overly juicy fresh mushrooms. i was worried it would make for a soggy pizza, but the crust held up. and it was quite tasty.
heidi enjoyed her pepperoni as well. but she felt they went a little gangbusters with the cheese.
despite our full tummies, the waiter uttered the magic word to make any girl find room: gelato. oh baby. i was torn over the pistachio and hazelnut, so the waiter brought me a scoop of each - yay! and heidi tried the lemon. all were delish.
the menu features an array of panini that also sound good. i might have to return for lunch!
This review is for breakfast.
There're few breakfast options within a short wall from our house especially when it's cold outside. Golden Nugget can only be enjoyed so much. Enter Peppermill Kitchen.
This cozy corner cafe is nice, friendly, and relaxing. Service was good but not exceptional and my beverages were never empty. That's a good start. I ordered the Hearty Skillet which is a bed of home fried potatoes mixed with mushrooms and bacon then topped with three eggs (basted for me). I got an English muffin in lieu of toast.
The skillet arrived piping hot directly from the broiler. I knew it was hot because I nearly burned myself on it!! No warning from the waiter about the plates temperature. The food itself was good. Nothing special but definitely not bad. Average... maybe a little better. The flavors were kinda bland sans the occasional hint of mushroom and the egg yolk, of course. The waiter was attentive and friendly.
I hung out for a bit after eating just to relax. It was nice to people watch although there weren't too many people to attract my attention. So after a bit I decided to settle my bill.
This is where Peppermill loses major points. My bill wasn't outrageous, about $14.75, but definitely higher than some other local restaurants. What floored me about the bill was the $2 charge for an English muffin!! Seriously?? Are they that rare or considered such a delicacy that you have to charge $2? Not only that but when I originally ordered it there was no mention of an additional charge from the waiter. Not even Golden Nugget charges for English muffins.
I would say that next time I would be wiser but, sadly, there will not be a next time for breakfast, dear Peppermill. There are too many other places I would rather drive to that have equally, if not superior, food and service that choose not to charge $2 extra for an English muffin or at least have the decency to inform their patrons if they do.
Hopefully the next restaurant in this location will do better, we really need a great breakfast option within walking distance.
Let me just say the only reason I gave them stars is for the server we had. My husband and I always pass this place and thought we would stop in for brunch one morning. bad idea.
First, no one greeted us, several servers walked by us and the 3 other families waiting but never said anything, so finally, after 5 minutes of silence a female server muttered, "It's self seating, you can sit wherever." Okay...
Second, we sat near the door away from the bathroom but every time the door opened to the bathroom, we caught some serious rank smells. Really? Not great ventilation. gross.
Now for the food:
I got the potato pancakes, which on the menu say all potato. Well, it tasted like it was all powdered potato, no actual potato taste to this pancake. Not to mention it was gooey and mushy.
My husband ordered the mushroom bacon skillet with a side of sausage. okay, let me tell you, there was no bacon in the skillet! It was also very salty, maybe they added salt to cover for the no bacon. The sausage on the side was no better. It was completely cold. I am not saying cool, but ice cold.
We didn't bother sending anything back or complaining, we aren't usually confrontational and really, we wanted to get the hell out of there.
Like I said earlier, the stars are for our server, who was really nice and attentive. It's not like he cooked our food horribly so why blame him?
Not going back ever again. Yes, it is pretty inexpensive there, but save your money for a place with food that actually tastes like food.
My girlfriends and I went here twice, to try both dinner and breakfast.
For dinner, we all had the pizza - thin and crispy. It was fairly decent, but nothing to write home about. I found out later that one of my friends didn't like hers at all, but I forgot to get details.
We went back for brunch, and were severely disappointed. One of my friends ordered the baked eggs, which came out looking like a runny cheese sauce with a fried egg on top - she is severely non-confrontational, but even she had to send it back because she simply couldn't eat it. She asked for some bacon to just eat with her toast. The bacon came out as three pieces fried together into a single limp, greasy sheet. I got the biscuits and gravy (a special), which is one of my favorite foods - but this tasted terrible. Way too much pepper thrown in, but the gravy itself was bland and lumpy, and an unappealing shade of brown, with tiny bits of sausage. Our other friend had a better experience, because she simply ordered the pieces to make herself a breakfast sandwich.
During our dinner, the place was empty, but during the breakfast, the place was about half full (meaning maybe 6-8 tables). There were maybe two families with small kids, but the noise was deafening - the ceiling is open and metal, I think, (with painted but exposed ducts), so the sound just ricochets around inside instead of being dampened.
We all agreed after we left that we wouldn't be going back.
I pass this place almost every morning on my way to the Metra and finally stopped in today.
I was looking for a quick breakfast sandwich, which they don't have on the menu. But the cook and waiter were extremely flexible and offered to make whatever I wanted (there was no one else in there at the time). The bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich was exactly what I wanted, and they even gave me the extra filling that wouldn't fit into the sandwich!
Nice guys, very accommodating, will definitely need to go back again for the regular menu.
I've been here several times now for breakfast with my wife and the food has always been excellent. However, it seems that each time we go the service gets worse. Last Sunday morning we walked in and stood in the doorway for about five minutes before we were seated while at least 3 waiters and what I suspect is the owner watched us, and then probably at least another 5 before a waiter came by. the table. Now I would understand it they were slammed or understaffed, but neither was the case.
If you have time and dont mind shit service, the food is great and worth giving it a go.
My husband and I saw that a new restaurant was opening in our 'hood. We saw the permit in the window and we watched them paint inside.
Then we waited. You always gotta wait a couple weeks til they work out the kinks.
For some reason, thought of it more as a breakfast place. Then tonight I "Yelped" it and saw that people were raving about the pizza. Low and behold... we didn't have dinner plans so we dropped everything and gave it a try.
It did not disappoint. For starters... everyone's gotta love a BYOB. The pizza was authentic and delicious. The pepperoni... spicy, just how I love it. Our server was attentive. The owner came out and talked to us... friendly without being intrustive. The french onion soup was slightly bland but both my husband and I finished ours... just threw some salt and pepper in there.
We asked to see a breakfast menu while we waited for our pizza. There's a pretty good chance we're going to be back in the morning to check out their breakfast fare.
To be continued...
We went for a late-morning Sunday breakfast. The place was packed and LOUD, but even though we could barely hear each other, we had a nice breakfast. The waiter was super nice! I didn't like the huevos rancheros I ordered (they just shouldn't offer them), but I did share in the German apple pancakes and nutella & banana crepes that my family ordered, and they were delish.
YES! An adorable family-owned BLDB (breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch) place in the quasi-barren Ravenswood hood. After eyeing it for months, I was pleased to finally step foot into the Peppermill with its pleasant decor of earth-toned colors and each table with its own unique...you got it...peppermills! Not only was the service spectacular but Vito (the owner) and his daughter were there to listen to our 'yays and nays' in order to improve their business. How cool!
If you're dining after 5 pm, they'll present you with a separate Pizza Menu. The owner's family are Italian so you know the 12 inch pizza's gotta be good. My boyfriend had their thin crust pizza which was nice and crispy (can't get too much more of an opinion out of him). I had the Sloppy Joe sandwich (only a home-cooked favorite) which was made with both pork and beef that gave it a tasty gamey twist. I'd definitely have it again simply because of the sweet yet savory flavors without it being greasy.
I am excited to check out their Brunch offerings served til 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. They HOMEMAKE their scones, croissants, bagels and pastries which I'm excited to sample. Since their super new, a few changes are yet to come. For instance, take-out menus are being printed, in addition to a website being created. Although the hours may be altered, I have posted them for all to see. I can't wait to bring my family here when they visit town. There's something for everyone.
Tried to write a review on Metromix, but Peppermill is not listed, so I just had a get a Yelp account to rave about my new favorite pizza place!
I'm a pizza fanatic. I can tell you where the best pizza place in each neighborhood in Chicago is, and this place tops them all! The family is from Italy and the pizza is classic Italian, and very reasonably priced. Crust is just the right thickness and they don't over do it on the cheese, like most American pizza joints.
My boyfriend had the Fettucini Alfredo, and it was so good, I ended up giving him half my pizza for half of the Alfredo (something I NEVER do).
Overall, much needed restaurant in the neighborhood. Warm, pleasant decor, great for date nights, family outings and a girl's night out (it's BYOB, which is great so I can save money by bringing my own wine!). I went opening weekend, and I know some of the other reviewers did too and said the restaurant wasn't prepared, but I found the place fully prepped and everything seemed to be running VERY smoothly (I was a waitress for years, and the place did not at all look like a restaurant in distress. We servers can sense these things.)
It's become my weekend hangout and I don't even live in the neighborhood.
Nice neighborhood spot. Friendly service, variety of things on the menu.. salads, sandwiches, burgers, and pizzas. Breakfast menu looks pretty standard.
I had the Chicken Caesar Wrap and was not disappointed... fresh greens, tasty chicken, and a nice dressing. All the sandwiches come with potato salad and a pickle.
There's a seperate pizza menu, which I'll come back to try. BYOB, everything on the menu is available for take-out.
Should be a nice addition to the neighborhood.
I was ecstatic when I found out a small eatery/cafe was opening just steps from my apartment. This is a nice little place that just opened yesterday. I stopped in during lunch time, and the host was friendly and offered me a menu. They had four different menus: breakfast menu, the regular menu, pizza menu (they gave me the impression that pizza is only available in the evening) and the dessert menu. Choices for lunch are pretty good from sandwiches and burgers to soup and salad.
I ordered a prosciutto panino, which I think had fontina cheese in it. It was a bit overdone but it was good. The price I would say is a little steep at a little under $8 but it came with potato salad and a pickle, as do all the sandwiches. I saw the dessert menu and was tempted to add a slice of tiramisu, but maybe next time.
The atmostphere is pretty laid back. It's a good place to go for lunch either with a couple of friends or solo.
We are so excited to have this place up in Ravenswood. When days are so cold you can't enjoy life, it is good to have a comfy, friendly,cozy-warm food place in the area. Prices are reasonable for very good-but-not-yet-great breakfast (that's what I had). Serving sizes are slightly below large and decor makes you feel relaxed and content. Honestly, when it gets so cold you can't go outside without nose hairs freezing, you tell me you want more than this.
No, Peppermill Kitchen is perfect. Right across from the beautiful Abbott House at Hermitage and Wilson (and may I submit it'd get more cache from calling itself "Hermitage Cafe"), right among the gold and orange trees this time of year, and four blocks from Damen brown line.
If you live anywhere around here or at a nearby Brown line stop, do yourself a favor and slum on in some Sunday morning. You'll feel better all day.
The Peppermill Kitchen is a small cafe on the corner of Wilson and Hermitage. I came in one morning and ordered coffee and a muffin. The service was friendly, but unfortunately the coffee was even worse than office coffee....watery and sour. The muffin was so dry that I had a hard time even swallowing it.
I really hope this place starts to focus on food and less on the (albeit very cute) decor. I'm always rooting for local businesses to succeed but I'm not sure how that can happen when the food is not only medicore, it's just bad. My advice to Peppermill is to get some fresh baked goods, brew some Intelligentsia, and get some tasty recipies on epicurious.
My wife and I went out for a late-ish bite around 9 last night, and had a nice time. I'm happy to finally have a casual American place nearby with long hours. She had the greens & fruit salad; I had the sloppy joes. Both were solid but not spectacular. A shout-out to the french fries though -- just right, not too crispy or soggy. I'm looking forward to trying their pizza next time.
Excellent, fresh food. Had the homemade chicken and pasta soup (fresh basil made this great). Tuna salad sandwich on french bread was a hearty portion and also very good. The pickle garnish was just right (freshly sliced and crisp). Overheard that there was a fresh apple pie for dessert, but alas, no more room. A very welcoming waitstaff and owner. Slightly dark inside (fine for dinner) but try a window booth during the day. Will definitely go back again to try breakfast and the pizza after 5pm.
I had high hopes for the Peppermill Kitchen but was disappointed and even confused with my recent dining experience there. The owner, who is apparently from Italy, claims to specialize in pizza but instead of just focusing on pizza and perhaps a complimentary sampling other Italian fare to go with it, he has created a large, disjointed menu of American and Mexican (yes, Mexican, too) blah-basics...chicken sandwich, turkey burger, quesadilla, etc. And, being that this is such a family- oriented neighborhood, the stereotypical children's menu of chicken nuggets and PB&J underscores the fact that he really didn't put any thought into what his particular "niche" is in this already restaurant-laden location.
I will try the Peppermill at least two more times (once for the pizza since they weren't serving it the night I was there and once for breakfast/brunch as that is one of my favorite meals to eat out) before I give it a final review. In the meantime, I am hoping that the owner will take a lesson from John of John's Place...he too serves a basic menu (adult and child) in the same price range but the quality and presentation of the food there is far superior.
We stumbled here on a random side route and thought we'd give the place a try. I used to live in the neighborhood a few years back and remembered that it used to be Chicago's Pizza, and so I was hopeful. The place was cute, but to be honest the food was below subpar for me. I want to give this place higher ratings but the experience was just not good. I know it was the first opening weekend, but you have to be ready for these kinds of things in knowing that - over prepared rather than under. Our food came out cold, the fountain machine was broken so there wasn't any coke available, it took a while to get my cappuccino, the bacon was more hard than crispy, the potatoes were pretty plain, and my eggs were over easy and not over medium. It's not worth it to pay for something you could have made better. I mean it's nice to have it done for you if it could be at least how you want it. With all the restaurant options available in the city, I'd be hard pressed to come back. Lastly, our waiter told us it was the first week they opened and to come back if we wanted - like he knew it sucked too...
3 1/2 stars. I would have given it 4 but the waitress brought me the wrong sandwich BUT I decided to eat the wrong sandwich anyways. That being said, do I deduct a 1/2 star??? So after finding out that this place opened the day before and it was a short walk down the street I decided I should bring my girlfriend for dinner. I ordered the proscuitto panini (received the caprese) and the tomato basil soup and my girlfriend ordered the salame panini. The soup was very good and the caprese sandwich was also good. The potato salad that accompanies all sandwiches tasted good as well. I love pickles and all sandwiches come with a pickle however my pickle was dry and sad looking...maybe I can justify the 1/2 star deduction now. A lot of people seemed to be getting the pizza so I will have to go back and try it. Overall, I liked the decor, the staff was unbeleivably friendly (the owner even came out to see how we were doing) and the price wasn't bad. If you are in the neighborhood and looking for a quick bite I would suggest stopping in.
