One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
words cannot express my ridiculous craving for pepper lunch's curry beef [#2 on their menu] with fried eggs. all that needs to be said is that after a few weeks, my mind [or stomach] reminds me that i haven't visited this place in a while and that i need to get my fix. i love love love this stuff.
this place is fairly inexpensive, and the food is always served promptly and sizzling hot. at first, i was a little confused when the stuff that came out still had beef that was red- did they expect me to cook this??? but obviously, since the meat was sliced super thinly, it cooks quite quickly on the hot plate. the curry powder adds extra yummy flavors on the rice, and if you leave the bottom layer of the rice on the hotplate long enough, it develops a delicious layer of slightly burnt rice like the stuff you get at the bottom of your dolsott bibimbop bowl. YUM. all this stuff with a bit of garlic butter and, oh lord, i am hungry just thinking about this.
personally, i prefer their rice over their noodles, but who knows. the price is very, very reasonable, and their portions are just right. yum yum yum, this little restaurant definitely packs a big punch!
ps. the little japanese lady deserves two extra stars for her stellar service. one time i came in with my family during a particularly busy day, and she literally LIFTED a few tables together so she could provide us with the proper seating.
At first I was not that big a fan of this place but it kinda grew on me after eating here a few times. After trying various items on the menu I always like to hover around the item that I liked the best which is the #1 with egg and extra beef.
For a while they skimped on the extra beef but they are up to par once again. Just don't wear anything you do not want to smell like bbq since there is a good deal of beef steam that you will swim in while you are trying to flip the piece of beef to cook them evenly.
Also. THEY CLOSE MONDAYS! Remember this! I have forgotten countless times and had to turn away after seeing all the lights turned off when driving up the the place. Sadness!
I had come here once with friend who insisted to drag a group of us here for dinner one night. At the time, I was quite keen on trying new places to eat. I didn't really know anything about the place other than passing by it on the outside, and that the food was Japanese-ish.
I ordered the curry beef pepper rice and the other guys got something not too adventurous. You will have some meat to be cooked on a hot skillet. It was mildly interesting, but not as fun as real BBQ-ing or even hot pot.
Well, I'd say that the food was not that great. I think I'd be insensible for me to go out to Milpitas just to eat here. I don't know what other people are talking about, but this place isn't that cheap. They charge a minimum of like $9 for a beef pepper rice, and even more if you want to up-size it. You can get a salmon and chicken dish for like $15, and pay even more if you want a combo. Just seems like simple overpriced food.
The elusive pepper lunch.
After my first visit I think I've cracked the obsession. People flock here because the dining experience is something of a novelty along the lines of eating at Benihana.
Most entrees contain raw meat, served on a sizzling plate, which seconds later transforms after cooking 'itself'. I can't lie, it makes eating here fun. But the food itself is nothing out of the ordinary. I ordered the #2 beef w/pepper rice. Right off the bat I noticed the rice to meat ratio was way off. Way too much rice and not enough meat. The beef is shaved razor thin and hardly resembles the texture or taste of cow. The meat is also rather bland and requires you to douse it with a generous serving of sauce.
Prices are right, and the food comes out fast. But the service is a little on the iffy side. When ordering, I'd asked the waiter what he recommended and he looked at me blankly. Once my food came I asked if it was possible to order extra meat, and again I was met with a blank stare. Clearly there's a language barrier. But as long as you can point or know your numbers, they'll understand.
There's nothing like first hand experience when it comes to restaurants that get tons of hype. You'll either agree or like me, you'll leave underwhelmed.
I first experienced Pepper Lunch USA with my sister and instantly became a fan of the novelty of this place and how delicious the food is! Since then, I have visited this place over four times.
I've ordered the beef pepper noodles multiple times and the beef pepper rice once. I'd have to say they are both really good, especially if you add the egg for 50 cents. The beef pepper noodles/rice all come with a pretty large portion of raw thinly sliced meat and corn. The whole dish has a light pepper-y flavor.
There is something about adding the sauces, quickly mixing your meat/noodles/egg, hearing your plate sizzling, and watching the huge plumes of smoke gather around your table that is just plain fun. This is a great place to go with friends for a quick, cheap lunch or dinner that is interactive and delicious!
I'm drawn to this place for some reason. Something about the the sizzling plate with rice and corn surrounded by beef (#1 on the menu) keeps bringing me back. Once the plate comes out, I quickly spread the beef out to cook it and add red pepper and the soy sauce to to add flavor. Then mix it all up once it's cooked and then eat it! (Just be careful not to let the meat get over-cooked) it's such a unique and tasty place.
The only Pepper Lunch in USA happens to be conveniently located in Milpitas, CA. (I've been meaning to do a review on this place!) It's not bad and it's not memorable, but its good when you want to have your food on a skillet. You get to cook your meat if you order the pepper beef which is cool to do. What's not cool is that your clothes will end up smelling like pepper beef. :X The Japanese lady tries so hard to accommodate everyone but she needs more on staff.
Arigato tokidoki (Thank you sometimes.)
What is the logo? -a molar? - a chef hat? oh. a sizzle plate.
I wanted to try this place out because I've heard great things about it!
I've tried the #1 with egg - I think that is the one with rice, corn, slices of beef on the sizzle plate. I liked it, but was ever-so-slightly bland. I've tried it more than once and both times, it was just lacking a little more flavor. 3.5 stars
I also tried one of the donburi's and it was really good - not bland at all.
The prices are reasonable and the environment is laid back.
It's a great place for lunch because the food comes our really quick.
I found the place via friends. This place (chain) was featured on a tw food show, that got me more curious and prompted me to check it out.
What i liked. the food was very tasty, lotta meat, thick noodles, got a nice decor and all.
i did not enjoy the fact that i had to COOK it myself. they just dump a bunch of raw meat on a sizzling plate and expect ME to cook it--not cool.
i'm paying to be served, not to be the chef. i told them to go cook it for me and they obliged :)
I would give this a 3.5, rounded it up to 4.
I was excited to try this place out because of all the great reviews. I have to say, the food was pretty good, but not the mind explosion I was expecting. If you want a simple lunch that is super duper fast, this is definitely a good place to go. And the price is very reasonable for so much food.
I ordered the Katsu curry and my friend ordered a number... 1, the sizzling plate with beef and rice (not the curry one, and she forgot to get an egg!!!). My dish was huge! Definitely could split into two reasonably sized lunches. I even had leftover curry, which I let my friend have because her food was just too bland for her taste.
Their curry was yum-bo! Japanese curry is so good and I don't know of many places that serve it. It is slightly spicy, ever so slightly.
We left super full and rather satisfied. Probably will come back to try their other sizzling plates or definitely for their curry whenever I get a Japanese curry craving.
This is a good place to go if you want a cheap lunch or dinner.
Their special is only $5.95 I believe (or $5 something, I don't remember). I usually order #1 which is rice (with corn on top) and beef: comes out on a sizzling plate. You have to cook the beef yourself but that's not hard :) I usually add an egg for .50. You can also add extra beef for $1, not so bad.
Only 3 stars because there's nothing special about the food, everything is...ok. I've tried the noodles (instead of rice) but I don't recommend it.
I went back to Pepper Lunch recently and was extremely disappointed with the service.
1) Our table was not clean before it was given to us.
2) My fiance's seat had sauce on it after the table was cleaned. He had to ask for napkins to clean up the mess.
3) I had to hunt down the waiters for our free miso soup. All the other tables had it before us.
4) The waiter stuck their fingers in our rice bowl before giving it to us.
5) While my fiance took a break from drinking his soup, the waiter came by and tried to collect the dishes. The waiter tried to take away my fiance's soup bowl without asking, and stuck his thumb in the remaining soup. Who would want to drink something after that? Gross.
The quality of the food has deteriorated, and there is nothing spectacular about this place. I don't want to go back to a place where service sucks.

Pepper Lunch is a good place for cheap and delicious food. Most of the dishes are under $10! I tried… Read more »
I am a huge fan of meals that are HOT!! It does not get much hotter then Pepper Lunch!!! First off i had no idea that this place was so popular, second i didnt know that basically they put thinly sliced raw meat on a super hot plate and you "cook" it yourself. So i went here with my girlfriend a while back and just fell in love with this place.
I am always looking for ways to make my dishes custom, so i got the #1 which was fried rice and like beef with a fried egg and then i asked for some japanese curry on the side. and the combo of the two was out of this world!!! =) This place is also very reasonably priced and the food comes out really fast since you "cook" it yourself. I cant wait to go back again next time im in the mood for curry rice!!!
I'm sure the name of the restaurant is more significant in another language, since Pepper Lunch can mean an assortment of things, and can be misleading at times. When my friend tried to describe this place, I had shabu-shabu in my mind. Well, i wasn't too far off.
The menu was very simple, and primarily consisted of meat that you cook on the iron plate in front of you. The selection comes from the type of meat and the topping (teriyaki sauce or garlic butter). Garlic butter with the Angus steak was what I order. Initially I regretted not getting the extra beef for $1, but when all was said and done, I was very satisfied with my meal. I mean, can you really go wrong with garlic butter??
I love the idea this place has: food cooked on an iron platter. Simple, but great execution complemented by an attentive waitstaff and prices that are college student friendly. $10 per person including tip!
We decided to try Pepperlunch based on the crazy good reviews from here. =)
Sure enough there was already a line waiting for dinner at the door. We were seated right away...
I ordered.. the #1 with the beef, rice w/ corn and a side of egg.
(I'm completely forgetting right now what my friends ordered. Whoops.)
The prices are very fair and the food comes out very quickly. Might I add it tasted wonderful!! Overall, a very cheap and delicious meal. I want to come back and try other things on the menu!
I don't hate this place at all. I do think that I did encounter an onset of a sore throat before coming into this restaurant, so maybe that played a big role into my 2 star review and all the water I had to drink. Otherwise, I just didn't take much for the udon sizzling beef plate for just two reasons:
1. Dry. The udon and beef were really dry even after using their special sauce. The noodles got smashed and stuck to the roof of my mouth and my throat.
2. Very salty. Coupled with reason #1, I was downing water after every bite.
I couldn't finish my plate. I tried really hard, but it just felt like someone mashed things together onto a hot, err, sizzling plate. I think this place deserves a second chance though. I'm determined to find the goodness in a 4 star place.
The smell on your clothes compares to a Korean BBQ joint. It's enough to prompt you to wear clothes that you don't mind washing immediately after a visit.
A cute little place for a quick meal.
As soon as I entered this restaurant I was distracted by beautiful humming noises coming from the sizzling meat on the hot plates. It was entertaining to play with the raw meat on your plate and watch them slowly cook to perfection.
Dinner was very filling. I am a meat lover but I almost couldn't finish all my food. I wouldn't say the food was great but it was definitely tasty. I might come here again for a quick lunch.
Cheap and delicious meal!
Fill up on a healthy (or maybe slightly unhealthy if you get lots of extra meat) portion of rice, sizzling meat, egg (+$0.50). The #1 (sizzling plate with beef, rice, corn & a miso soup) is only $5.95. If you get the lunch special version, it comes with extra meat and a salad. Expect to leave satisfied for the right price.
FYI, they are not open on Mondays. I have been burned... =(
It's my first time trying out this place...I've heard a lot of good reviews about it and so it's a must to try. I ordered the number 3 and the bf got the same but with curry & rice. I thought the idea of having it cooked on the sizzling plate was awesome. Everything tasted good after adding all the condiments they had on the table. One star off just because of the beef not being flavored.
Anyway, I'll probably try out the other dishes next time. Had to try out the originals first, which seemed to be popular from the reviews I've read here. ;)
Decided to check them out based on the reviews. The food is good value, tasty and the hot plate provides a bit of entertainment value. Went here for an early dinner on a Saturday with a party of four and my 2 year old. The place was not crowed at first but filled up quickly. The staff is efficient and we were able to order quickly. While waiting to order I couldn't help notice how the lacquer on the table had peeled off. Most likely a result of holding lots of hot plates over a long period. The picture menu gives a nice overview for first time visitors. I was in the mood for rice. I saw a couple of other interesting options from Salmon, Unagi and Angus Beef, but it wasn't clear from the pictures that they included rice. So I decided to stick to the basics. I did try to ask what the difference was between the #1 beef and #2 curry but the waiter (manager?) must not have understood me so I ended up getting the plain #1 beef . Surprisingly my order was served very quickly and I had to pay attention and make sure I used the time to cook the this strips of beef and egg while the hot plate was hot. The other two in my party also ordered the #1 beef but theirs took a couple of minutes longer to serve (maybe they were reheating the plates), because my meat was cooked and I was waiting a bit before their plates arrived and I had to start eating before the food got too cold. The #1 tasted a lot like my home made fried rice especially since I also use corn. Meat was tender and I added some of the table side soy sauce at the end to give it more flavor. I do appreciate that the meat is unseasoned so you can season it to taste. My wife had the unagi and noodles combo. The soup was also tasty and my 2 year old couldn't stop eating the noodles. The unagi was a bit sweet for my taste and the skin was a bit fishy. Still a good meal for the price. I wish I had tried the other options on the menu (the angus beef at my neighbor's table looked interesting). So I might check them out again in the future.
Oh and as the other have mentioned, watch-out if you are worried about your clothes smelling. My wife joked that this is "Not a first date place". Still nothing out of the ordinary if you have been to other places where they cook your food in front of you.
Totally reminds me of Hot Pot City sans huge vent fans, display of raw beef and sticky floors. The place felt rather homey and seemed to be a great, quick dine in spot.
I got the #1; with the beef, rice w/ corn and a side of egg. How could one go wrong ? Did I mention it is actually perfectly priced for starving, college students? I mean, how many students do you know is willing to dish out $15+ every day of the week? According to me, not enough to keep me looking for places like this.
Miso soup with noodles was served as an appetizer almost immediately but let's get onto the main dish. Don't get me wrong, as anxious as I was to dive into my sizzling dish the snap, crackle, pops forced me to keep a distance for the first couple of minutes to avoid the "OWS!"
That's right, delicious sizzling beef could potentially splash hot oil onto your skin or give your taste buds degree burns. That was not the only downside, I disliked how my rice somehow turned into ... fried rice. What am I doing wrong Pepper Lunch USA? Yelp loves you, but do you love me? I'd really like to give it another go, let's hope my numb tongue is forgiving as I am.
NOM NOM NOM. Just what I needed on my lunch break; some friggin red meat and rice on a hot skillet.
For 8 washingtons, you get soup, extra meat, and a salad. While you're at it,why not throw in an egg for 50 cents.
This meal is as exciting as discovering that there is no key for the 'cents' symbol on the keyboard.
Though my fellow diners Samantha R. and Chandler M. complained about the dryness of their food, I felt it was perfect. Fools, you're eating off a hot iron skillet....are you expecting soup? =]
And the menu has so many other delicious things to try out... I wish I was a cow so i could have 3 stomachs.....
MOOO
I'm surprised I didn't review this place yet. Delicious food - can't go wrong with the good ole #1 that comes out on a hot sizzling plate. The garlic ribeye is quite delicious as well. I also really like their salad here, which comes with the food. For the price, it's tough to beat this place and I like it! (p.s. I wouldnt get the bento boxes here, not nearly as good. stick with the hot sizzlin' plate stuff)
I love the black angus garlic butter steak sizzling plate from this place! It's so good and it's so tender! I love it! I love the salad, the tofu, the corn, and the California rolls from here as well! The bento boxes are not bad and the price is pretty decent too! They also have good Italian sodas hear as well. Man I love this place! The only thing I can't stand is that they're closed on Mondays! I always forget and would have cravings on Monday, drive up here, and they're closed! It's like a slap in the face especially when I know that they are closed on Mondays! Grrr...but yeah, service was always good and the owner is so sweet! I'd totally come back again, and again, and again!!!
3.75 stars. I liked this place, because this is hecka cheap compared to most places. I ordered the Curry Pepper Noodle with the fried egg (costs extra: $0.50), which was only okay. There was a lot of curry powder on the noodles, which kind of clumped together in spots. I also didn't have a lot of beef, and what I did have had some fat and tendons mixed in. It was kind of fun searing my meat though, so I couldn't hate this meal. It's also a decent-sized portion for being $7.45.
What I also appreciated was how even though there were two parties of 6+ people waiting, the staff didn't seem pushy in making us leave, even though we were finishing up anyway. They even came by and refilled our water!
Definitely a good place to go for lunch that is quick and cheap, if you work in the area.
The food is freaking delicious! The bad part is that you leave smelling like the food.
It's cheap and good. If only the smell was not so strong and didn't stick, everything would be perfect.
No funnys or cools on this one...just some Grade A insider info... If you feel like adventuring to THE ONLY USA location for this Japanese chain...why not branch out at lunch?
Lunch Special:
- Xtra meat
- miso soup
- salad
- rice and corn
- (ask for egg)
Cost? approx $8.00
Worth it? ...uhh did you hear all you get for $8?!?! DUH!
TIPS:
...........................
1.) Its cool you get to watch your food cook on a flat iron
in front of you...but stir up your food so both sides cook evenly!
...........................
2.)Save some of the miso to pour over your rice and
beef...it dries out on the flat iron sometimes.
...........................
3.)#2 has a lot more flavor than #1, but you'll probably
add more pepper to both...
...........................
4.)DON'T FORGET THE EGG!
...........................
**I still haven't tried the sizzling noodles...that's next on my list.
**There is a HUGE menu....seriously try this place out :)
My friend Dan introduced me to this place last year. Appearently it is the only one in the USA so the southbay is very fortunate to have this place. Everytime I come here I always get the #1, the sizzling plate with beef and rice. This place is cheap and you always leave satisfied. The sauce they use on the meat is addicting. Typing this review is making me crave for it right now! If your ever in Mcarthy Ranch checkout this place.
Went here with the lady a few days ago. Used my Storm to check ratings for this place and decided to stop by based on positive reviews. First off, the hot skillet is appealing, the price is right, but the taste just didn't deliver. We ordered the curry beef noodle with fried egg and the beef yakisoba. I had higher than moderate hopes based on reviews, but the taste just fell short.
I wasn't expecting a party in my mouth, but it just had no kick. Even with the red pepper to add some zest, it just gave it a passable amount of taste. Sure the wait staff is attentive enough to fill the glasses several times without asking, and the food is served promptly. But I guess I just expected better. Would I return? Maybe, but I'm not in a rush.
I was expecting that "Pepper Lunch" was gonna be a little bit Peppery-ER than this, haha. However, this was a great deal for the lunch special! $8 for the main dish, miso soup and a small salad.
I got the #1 Original with egg and it was good but a little plain. I had to add some soy sauce and pepper to give it flavor. Loved the salad dressing, and with the egg, it made a world of difference to the rice, beef and corn dish.
I like the way the food was presented and how you cook it yourself on an iron skillet! It definitely filled me up too. Wasn't 5 star quality, but it was better than many 3 star places I've been. Definitely coming back to take advantage of the GREAT DEAL, and to try something else on the menu with endless possibilities
"Different" and "tasty" have to be the first two adjectives that spring to mind when you take your first bites at this plate. We've all see various manners of cook-the-food-yourself Asian cuisines, but this one definitely sets itself apart.
According to Wikipedia, the rocket-hot metal plates are heated electromagnetically, resulting in amazingly short cooking times. You need to toss the meat quickly to avoid over cooking. (By the way, stay away from the Wikipedia article -- apparently some pretty unsavory stuff happened at an infamous outlet in Japan.)
The food is VERY tasty. I went with the #2 Beef Curry Rice on the recommendation of my buddy, and it definitely was a winner. At $5.95 for most entrees, our group of 7 found ourselves struggling to figure out how to leave such a small tip.
The curry flavor is tasty, but not classic. I would up these guys to 5 stars if subsequent visits are so satisfying, except for two issues. First, raw meat + 1 pair of chopsticks = uh oh. Second, cleanliness (at least apparent cleanliness) could be a tad better.
If you are looking for a fast in / fast out place for less than $7, you won't go wrong trying ou Pepper Lunch
OVERRATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
unagi tasted a bit fishy... i'm not sure if that's generally a problem with hot unagi (as opposed to cold unagi on sushi), but i was not a fan.
salmon was ok, but a bit bland. they need to give another plate to put the salmon on after it's done cooking, cuz when it sits on the sizzling platter for too long, it gets overcooked.
beef was also bland and too chewy.
salad dressing was too salty.
i can see how so many people like this place - it's kind of cool watching meat cook on your sizzling platter, it's not too expensive, and they give you a truck load of rice, so it looks like a lot of food. however, a good gimmick is no substitute for well prepared food and high quality, fresh ingredients.
I used to go here often when I lived in Milpitas, but when I recently went here, I left disappointed. Not sure if it was the rice or that their special sauce didn't have much flavor. I got my usually beef with fried egg (extra $0.50). The Japanese lady (owner) I was used to seeing before was not working. Not sure if it's the same owner.
I think the place is still cheap for what they provide. Before they didn't provide a lot of meat which made sense for people to order extra meat, but when I went recently, I thought they provided more than they used to. Anyhow, this time it was just okay so not sure if I'll be going back anytime soon.
Love, love, love this place! This has got to be one of my favorite lunch spots. I'm surprised I haven't written a review about this place already because I have been coming here for years. This place really has a niche because you can't find many places where you see your own food cooking right in front of you and for such an inexpensive price too. Lunch for 3 people was under 30 dollars, yes under 30! The service is always very fast too so you can get in and out quickly. The only drawback is that because the food is being cooked in front of you, you can potentially come out smelling like food.
Tips - I recommend getting the garlic butter option as opposed to the terriyaki because you can always get a bottle of terriyaki on the side. Super good sauce! =)
MMMmmm... Love there #10a!! Great place to go to for a quick lunch that will keep you full. Their special is served with soup and salad, which is nice. I tried the garlic butter sauce, but wasn't too impressed with it. Stick with the Teriyaki. Also, they have this yummy garrlic sauce (looks like soy sauce, but much more diluted) that you have to pour on your rice and meat to get that extra boosted flavor! Also cheap cheap! ^^
I'm actually very, very surprised that there is only one Pepper Lunch franchise in the United States. Every time I go there for lunch or dinner, it's packed, and I've never had a bad eating or service-related experience there. Even now, my boyfriend and I will drive from Berkeley to Milpitas if we're especially craving it.
My parents used to occasionally take me and my sister to Pepper Lunch when we were kids, but I didn't fully appreciate Pepper Lunch until high school. Now, I've never actually tried anything beyond the standard $5.95 (or is it $6.95?) hot plate, but it is such a good deal! Meat, rice, and corn on a steaming hot plate, and extra meat (for only $1, I kind of find it to be necessary, otherwise you get really little meat) - it's one of my comfort foods :) You also get free soup sometimes, which is nice. I always pour a lot of the sauce that's on the table too (in the glass jar, not the soy sauce), and add the spicy seasoning, and I am good to go :D Some reviews say that the more expensive plates aren't worth the money, but I love the basic plate (I don't recommend the curry, it gives a weird side taste that detracts from any sauces you add to it)
My tips for those who go: stuff your meat under your rice if the plate isn't hot enough to cook the meat fully, don't pour sauce on immediately because it evaporates and the smell will saturate your clothing, which is completely unnecessary, the "special" (with the salad and soda) is not really a special (it used to be, but they bumped up the price), and they are closed on Mondays (which I learned the hard way, sigh)
Mmm, I could go for some right now...heh
I have to say 2 thumbs up for this place! I order the samething everytime I go here because you can never go wrong with the #1 with egg. It is soo BOMB! If you don't like corn like me...you can ask them to not have it on there and they will give you extra meat and rice to compensate for it.
If you go during the lunch rush you might get skimped on with the meat cuz they get too busy, but if you go afterwards...DUDE they hook you up!!!!!
Interesting.. A Japanese sizzling plate restaurant.
I've seriously never tried noodles, egg and salmon on a sizzling plate. These plates also comes with corn and tons of garlic butter. It was fun to try but I don't think it's something I can eat often.
I had the salmon garlic butter with ramen noodles and egg. Honestly, everything just tasted really buttery in a bad way. Like a meal that was soaked in a butter bath.
FYI this is suppose to be a chain restaurant originated from japan.
Overall, it was an interesting experience since I've never tried something like this before. But I won't be a regular at this place.
Always craving sizzling plate #3: beef pepper noodle (with egg). Be prepared with your napkin to shield yourself from the sizzling splatters of oil. Be quick to pour the sauce over the beef, and make sure the corn doesn't end up on the table when you start eating. Use the force, and you'll be successful.
Oh, when you leave, you'll be quite attractive with the scent of "nomness."
Been eating here for 9 years. What can I say? I have mad love for this place.
