This is probably my favorite Italian restaurant. I used to go here every week and order Spaghetti and Meatballs with my co-workers. It has a nice down-to earth feeling, and the food is both inexpensive as a well as delicious.
I couldn't recommend a better restaurant! (And I always send my friends here.) -

Maybe the food is hit or miss because my girlfriend and I certainly didn't see any hits in this joint.
We had the antipasto misto to start (the grilled eggplant and air dried beef was pretty good - other components was not particularly memorable).
For entrees, I had the porcini mushroom pasta and my girlfriend had the gnocchi with bologenese sauce. The porcini mushroom pasta was marginally better - earthy but lacked richness. The gnocchi bolonese was a let down - the gnocchi were essentially pieces of awkward flour bits that were rubbery and very bland. The bolognese was watery and lacked the rich meaty zest of a traditional italian bolognese.
There's a difference between simple delicious and being stingy with ingredients and taste. Unfortunately, I left with the impression it was the latter. At least the bill is cheap but if you are really trying to save a buck you can probably just cook most of the dishes they offered at home. The stacked boxes of Barilla penne and team of delivery boys cooking in the kitchen suggests to me that there is just nothing special going on here. -

With a bunch of places closed during Labor Day, we decided to check out Pepe Verde for some cheap eats.
"This is the place," my buddy said. I looked at it. It looked like a run-down almost shack-ish place with three dudes inside chilling. Knowing that this could either be the sign of an excellent home-cooked-style restaurant, I said "let's do it." My buddy looked less than interested, but we gave it a shot.
Yeah, take a look and take a look again. That's lunch for less than 10 bucks in the middle of the West Village. No, seriously. I know you don't believe me.
The food was hearty and heartily delicious. The sauces were extremely flavorful and had a great combination of tangy, salty, sweet and a bit of spicy. (Someone give me this recipe!)
The bread was pretty decent, though I found it most optimal for finishing off the sauce after you've eaten the pasta.
This place gets you pretty full for not much at all. I wish this place was closer to where I lived, because it absolutely kicks ass and hits the sweet spot of good food and great value. I'm in. -

So cheap! Good enough. I was confused when I sat down and was waiting for ages but no one came up to take my order. Apparently you order at the counter. Okie doke, save on waiting tips, even cheaper, even better!

It is a good place to have cheap Italian food. No decor or service as such. Please dont expect an Italian fine dining experience. But the pink sauce is pretty good. Drop in if you want to have affordable Italian food

Never ate here, only have ordered in from here. It's cheap and consistently good. Salads, and pastas are definitely yummy and filling. Caesar salad, pear and gorgonzola salad, pesto pasta, eggplant parm, gnnocci are all solid.

Home delivery in Manhattan is part of convention. A deed for the lazy to some. Urban wisdom for others. Typical takeout is pizza, Chinese and even sushi. But when you order pasta, you need to manage your expectations. Pepe Verde, the snug restaurant tucked away on Hudson, has experienced harsh criticism by many who seem to complain from all sorts of home delivery pasta blunder. Yes, overdone, soggy pasta is a buzz kill. But then again perhaps Italian is one of those things that should not be delivered.
Pepe Verde presents a straightforward, unrefined Italian experience. Dishes are rugged and simple, hearty and wallet friendly. But the food here will also please those who demand a little more. A stout Italian man runs the show. He takes your order propped behind his little counter. The menu is written on a chalkboard with the specials designated on the far right. There are printed menus available too. Focaccia is made daily and is served with a really good, nutty olive oil. Serving plates look like they were passed on from a grandmother and Pinot is served in clear plastic cups, you know the sort you would have at art openings. The food is unambiguously delicious.
The Sautéed Calamari with Chopped Tomato and Black Olives is epic. The perfect blend of sea and salt; it is rendered subliminal by way of brine and olive. The Whole Wheat Penne Primavera with tomatoes and chicken is fresh and bright. More delicious is the Rigatoni Chicken and Mushroom in Pink Sauce. Pasta pipes are rough and chewy and the sauce is creamy but tangy, punctuated with strong mushroom essence. -

Cheap West Village place on Hudson with unremarkable but competent service. They make many different types of fresh pasta daily, and the special board often is more extensive than the menu itself.
The antipasti plate is a big plate of various things, perfect for sharing. The caesar salad was just ok. For mains, I like the penne with prosciutto, the ravioli was nice, too. I'd say try anything off the special board.
It is astoundingly cheap to drink here ($15 bottles of sangiovese), but do resist the temptation to linger over a bottle of wine: there are customers waiting for your table!Listed in: far west village haunts

This place is a "hidden gem" that I have been frequenting since they opened in 1997. They serve without a doubt some of the best Italian food in the West Village. Anyone who has wasted their hard earned money across the street at Frankie's will quickly realize that this is the place to be (and I'm one who has tried Frankie's twice). Their salads are stellar. The Eggplant Parmigiana is the best in NYC at any price. Sure it's small (22 seats) and you have to order at the counter, but so what? The food is the star here. And where else in Manhattan can you get a glass of wine for $5.50 and a bottle for $16??? I love you Pepe!

It's a tiny little eatery that I love. You order by the counter and you wait by your table. It's not really a full service place but that is fine. The prices are very very affordable. I have been here a couple of times. I had the salmon and pasta with broccoli rabe and sausage. I loved both. This place was memorable enough to come here more than once. It was the price for me. I always had everything fresh here. It's served pretty quickly. It's way out of my way but if I am anywhere near the West Village, I would definitely come here. I love it.

Food was hit or miss. Mussels were fine though the tomato sauce they were in was bland and a bit too sweet - tasted straight out of a can. My fussili puttanesca was delicious with the perfect amount of spice, anchovies and capers, but the cappelini w/ zucchini and chicken my mom had was terribly bland. Both pastas were fresh and well cooked, but nothing spectacular to write home about.
And the service was awkward. -

Perhaps my girlfriend and I just didn't order anything extraordinary (penne with tomato and basil, and meat lasagna), but the food was not anything that I could not cook myself. It was good, but nothing I'm likely to crave. The staff was friendly, though, and the atmosphere was charming.

I love Pepe Verde
Not just for their pasta
The prices are great,
I just couldn't help it
I had to run home
to my Macbook and Yelp it.
So I went to Pepe Verde, and then I joined Yelp. I mean, I had to let the world know, right? It's that perfect diamondintheroughholeinthewallhiddengem kinda place that I'm always trying to find. You order off a chalkboard at the counter while your date/friend/husband/craigslisthookup secures a table. Call me old fashioned, but there ain't nothin better than cheap, phenomenally fresh, authentic Italian in a cozy, quaint setting, all washed down with wine in plastic cups. That's amore. -

We came here for a casual dinner, expecting fresh food and at least decent service. Turns out the guy at the counter is a jerk -- he yelled at us for placing an order with someone else behind the counter, after making us wait while he was talking on the phone.
The food wasn't very good either -- it was pasta from a box, just like my tomato sauce was from a can. There's really no good reason to go here, since the service sucked, the bread was bad, and the food was mediocre at best.
Go to Malatesta on Washington and Christopher. Pretty much the same price, but way better! -

Lady who picked up the phone spoke very little english, not in the good way.
Delivery took 1.25 hours after I called back after an hour to ask what the issue was. Which means it was probably never put in because the food arrived 15 minutes later.
Taste: Uniteresting
Food Presentation: Sad piece of overcooked chicken with lots of sauce, overcooked pasta, and bland.
Bread was thrown in bag and sort of wet, hopefully from condensation. -

Hold on to your pants here kids. Cheap and good Italian food in the West Village? Cheap and good do not generally go hand-in-hand in the West Village, not the case with Pepe Verde. A party of 5 went during the week and had an excellent meal with Chicken Parmesan, a chicken pasta special, bruschetta, bottle of white wine, a Peroni, salad and a sandwich. The total for all of this - including the bottle of wine was under $100. Not to mention the food was prepared perfectly, fresh and full of flavor.
The only odd thing was the younger guy behind the counter - when asked for a pasta recommendation he acted insulted and said "look at me, I do not eat pasta" - that is no lie. Very bizarre attitude.
The restaurant is small inside and is pretty much self-serve. You order at the counter but they bring the food to you. You are on your own getting water from a pitcher that is sitting on a bookcase along with olive oil, balsamic, pepper and cheese. -

I've been a Pepe Verde fan for years and just realized I've never had a chance to Yelp about it. So here I go.
I'm giving it 4 stars because I'm trying to be objective (5 stars = Per Se for me). But Pepe Verde's food is AWESOME. It's quick, easy, inexpensive (relatively-speaking), super casual, and one of my favorite places to grab a quick mid-week dinner in the city.
But you do need to understand what you're getting into: It's a hole in the wall, literally. It's tiny, cramped, can get warm, and doesn't really have table service. But that's also what makes it terrific -- it's a quick, tasty, easy meal. The vibe is very neighborhood, the food is fresh and delicious, the break homemade, the pasta al dente, and the service friendly.
If you're expecting to be served in the lap of luxury, this ain't the joint for you. If you're going to complain because you have to use paper napkins and order at the counter, this place ain't for you. If you want really good food, a very low-key meal, a warm (literally and figuratively) environment, and to leave full, happy, and satisfied, you too will become a Pepe Verde fan for life. -
Review from Joanna L.
I had an excellent time at this small hole in the wall restaurant. My friends and I were planning on going to Westville to eat, but there was a line and we were freezing. We thought we'd go to Magnolia and go back to Westville, but of course, Magnolia had a line down the street... so we ended up walking around until we came across Pepe Verde.
Seeing the shockingly low dinner prices ($7-10 for a bowl of pasta!? AT DINNER!? -- HOW APPALLING! IT'S UNHEARD OF!) we HAD TO go in. It was nice and warm inside and the "host" was great and incredibly nice. We got a seat almost immediately (granted that it was around 8:45pm) and go straight to ordering. They had just paper menus, but that's fine with me as long as the food is great. We got a bread basket and they had a homemade olive oil (garlic, tomato and other spices). Now I've had some good olive oil in my day, but theirs was FANTASTIC. For that alone I almost give it 5 stars. My palate was very pleased with the amount of raw garlic (uh oh to those who hate garlic).
Well the host/waiter was hilarious because it seemed like he had ADD. He was very silly and had an accent that I don't recognize. He asked what we wanted to drink and my friend wanted hot water... apparently they didn't have any, but he got her some anyway. Plus our other friend got a free iced tea. Very nice! We finally got to ordering our food. I decided to get the penne with spinach and risotto. While waiting the host/waiter decided to bust out with a guitar and sat next to a friend and played guitar and sang. It was a very cute and interesting atmosphere.
When we got our food I was starving and it tasted perfect. Even though I'm sure I could make something similar at home, it was good nonetheless. My point is, even though I can make it at home, as long as it is tasty, I find it to be a good eatery.
The pasta was al dente. The sauce was a little watery, but it had good flavor and wasn't too salty or bland as I often find many sauces. The ricotta cheese was cold, but it balanced out the piping hot pasta.
After the meal. our bill came out to around $25 for 3 people -- now THAT is amazing. The host/waiter was even cute enough to ask if we enjoyed the music -- but of course! It was a fantastic atmosphere, good food, cheap eats and an altogether good time.
You'll probably find me back there in the near future. -
Review from Darwin G.
Simple, delicious, and unbelievably cheap Italian food. It's small and has only a handful of tables. Order at the counter and they'll bring you the food.
The mussel appetizer was a big portion and came with a great, garlicy marinara sauce.
The apple, goat cheese, and greens salad with a balsamic vinaigrette was fantastic. The sweet acidity of the balsamic goes so well with the apple and goat cheese.
The bread was soft and unappealing, not the sourdoughy, crusty, warm bread that you desire with Italian. The bruschetta was also a bit disappointing without a real crunch to it.
The mussels, salad, and bruschetta came at $20. Ridiculously cheap. You can also order wine. -

Great food for a low price. The fresh bread at the beginning was tasty. Cute little nook if you want to dine in. Great service. We had the farfalle with peas and ham... and penne in a tomato sauce with ricotta... and they were both wonderful. Fresh, hot, and flavorful. Good enough portions to have leftovers if you want. Loved it.

Last night I was traveling through the West Village with a friend on the prowl for food. We wanted a casual place where we could both do some work and eat. And boy, did we find it!
At first, we thought Pepe Verde was a hole in the wall taqueria, due to it's small size and casual atmosphere.
The menu is written on a chalk board hanging from the mint green walls, and you have to walk up to a counter to order.
Something told me that this would be a killer pasta joint, so we ordered their Penne Vodka and their Pappardelle with Sausage in a Fra Diavolo sauce. A few moments later, they brought the orders to the table.
On first glance, I knew we were in for a treat. The vodka sauce was smooth, with a great color, free of excessive oil. And the Fra Diavlo was bright, red, and donned plump chunks of crumbled sausage. And like any good italian dish, the sauce was merely there to compliment the pasta which was perhaps the best cooked pasta I've ever had. Perfectly Al dente, fresh, seasoned, with a nice bite.
This is a great place to go for an inexpensive date, or alone to read and do some work. I'll definitely be back.

Seattle, WA
In keeping with the great tradition of West Village's hole-in-the-wall eateries, this is an unassuming yet charming little place, that serve good food at reasonable price. Most of its adorable charm is drawn solely from the neighborhood it's in and the kind of people that frequent it - the restaurant itself contributes almost nothing to its "cuteness," with its non-existent interior decorations, no nonsense staff, menu on printed on a single sheet of plain paper, and deli-style paper coffee cup for your water drinking needs. There's no token eye-candy cute waitress here... in fact to wait staff at all. You fetch your own water, you go up to the counter to order, and there's no wine menu to speak of.
What you do get are great pasta dishes, ranging anywhere between above average to excellent in taste, and $8~$12 in price. While I may not agree with all of their flavors, I do agree that they are all made very well, cooked exactly right. In my very subjective opinion, vodka sauce is average, bolognese above average, pink sauce and four cheese sauce excellent. Also, I've found that items off their daily special menu are always far, far better than things from their everyday menu.
They are good choice for take-out, and they deliver as well. By the way, their free bread, round little loaves they cut up into little strips, are exceedingly yummy. And their portions in general are quite good.
They still have not been around very long. In due time, I imagine that they will figure out their menu, and develop a few signature dishes and be able to afford to real cups.
So, in short, a no-frills Italian restaurant, with food that at least doesn't disappoint very much and often pleasantly surprises, at very palatable prices. I imagine this is what Bar Pitti would be like, if it were less crowded, food almost as good but not quite, and no movie stars ever came by to eat there. -

I've spent the past three months living in the West Village, and to the detriment of every other Italian establishment out there, I found Pepe Verde early in my stay. It has become my mainstay - I eat here at least once a week.
For what it is - a cheap, no-frills, authentic Italian/pasta experience - you cannot beat this place. Everything is fresh and cooked with a light but confident touch. And the thick Italian accents of the staff are especially endearing when paired with true friendliness and warmth.
My favorites have been the chicken parmigiana (comfort food at its finest), and the orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage. Both are from the specials board, which I recommend taking advantage of.
I thought I overheard one of the staff mention that they might have to close down due to higher rent. I hope this is not the case, as Pepe Verde defines what a friendly, hole-in-the-wall neighborhood dining should be! -

I don't really understand all of the 5-star reviews. You could make all of this food by yourself at home, which is both the blessing and curse of this place.
The bf and I went yesterday afternoon for a quick cheap lunch. He got the grilled veggie panini and I got the penne with spinach, tomatoes, and ricotta. Both were underwhelming; the panini was completely under-seasoned and the pasta had chunks of raw garlic in a too salty sauce. The bf kept saying, "All you need is salt and red pepper flakes, maybe a simple sauce or cheese." I kept saying, "Just take one minute to crush and soften the garlic. The flavor isn't even in the sauce this way."
On other occasions we've gone and been really pleased with the simple but delicious treatment of the food here. Sometimes a visit to Pepe Verde is very comforting and homey. Unfortunately, they've go to figure out how to consistently make such visits the rule. -

Sooooooo good!!
Keep in mind: this is a really tiny, hole-in-the-wall, order-at-the-counter kind of place. But for $7-12 pasta that's high quality and delicious, I'm game for anything! I ordered one of the specials with peas and sausage and got it with pappardelle pasta (they're home-made, and you can substitute them with any of the pasta dishes) and I'd highly recommend it. It was amaaazing. The portions aren't too big but as a person with a bigger appetite than stomach capacity, I had enough to take home for a yummy little snack later.
Tip: If you go on a hot day, be sure to sit strategically in front of those big portable air conditioners they've got in there because otherwise you'll probably be sweating buckets. But still so worth it! -

Wow! Pretty damn good!
I ordered the pear and arugula salad with gorgonzola and a prusciuto with tomato and mozarella panini.
The food was made quickly and it was reasonably priced. The sandwich was very large (enough for two meals). The bread was round and incredibly crispy on the outside but soft and warm on the inside. The meat was absolutely delicious.
For a fast, cheap, filling italian meal, i recommend pepe verde. They also have a small but rustic and cozy dining area. -

Went here on a blind date. We got there pretty early and it was vacant, but by the time we left a few hours later, there were peoole fighting for our seats. I guess the aggressive fellow patrons was a downside.
Great food, prices matched the value of the food.
$14.00 for a bottle of red wine.
I am a big fan of outdoor seating, which they don't have, but they do have those big wall doors on the front, making it an open air sort of restaurant.
We finish our date with a walk to and on the Highline. I recommend it. -

Pepe Verde is a great little hole-in-the-wall in the West Village. It has self service, is super cheap, and has excellent Italian food. You'd think your at Angelo's in Little Italy but its much cooler cause it's such a small place in a cool area. Good place to bring friends for a cheap eat. I had a rotini with some sort of thick creamy alfredo-like sauce and bacon. Highly recommended.

We went there this evening for a quick meal. It is great value and decent fare. The pasta in the spaghetti bolognese was cooked to perfection. The sauce while a bit watery was tasty and with the cheese firmed up nicely. The sauteed broccoli rabe and spinach were both well cooked with just the right amount of garlic. The fusilli with with seasonal vegetables was clean but a needed a bit more kick (leftovers were elevated with some shredded fontina cheese in my fridge). Great bread to boot! The meal accompanied by an iced cold Peroni was the move.

This is a review based on my having food delivered. Just fyi.
I've ordered in from Pepe Verde many times. In fact, tonight!
It's difficult to believe that any place could deliver pasta that isn't mush by the time it gets to your door. But Pepe Verde delivers pasta that is just perfectly done. I hate to use the phrase, but "al dente" applies to Pepe Verde. How do they do it? My guess is that they cook the pasta for 2 minutes and then, in the time it takes for them to bring it to your home, it's finished in perfect fashion. This is just a guess. But how else could you explain it?
Sauces (condimento) are good. Dishes are not usually overdone/sauced. Well, maybe a little bit. In Italy, it's the ratio of sauce (condiment) to noodle and it's usually less sauce than we would expect. The noodle/pasta takes first place. In the USA, it's, usually, how much sauce can I get? Pepe Verde straddles the bridge. But with appreciation for both.
The bread that they serve is forgetful. Ugh.
The salads are pretty good. The Caesar is good if you order the dressing on the side and then mix in some additional olive oil. (They make the dressing ahead and then put it in little cups which seem to have been refrigerated since the oil is coagulated once you get it. Not a bad thing, per se, but not preferable). The Apple Goat Cheese is good (again, dressing on the side but I'd recommend, in this case, to make your own dressing). The Tuna and White Bean Salad is quite good. Thankfully, they use tuna in oil and don't skimp on the olives and the savory/salty taste of this traditional salad.
All in all, a wonderful place to order from and eat in your home while watching La Dolce Vita. Or Sunset Blvd. Or Hedwig... . -

I used to live around the corner and i ate here all the time. Though it was the best for picking up food on my way home from school, i didnt fully appreciate this little joint until i moved to san francisco.
There is nothing like this here. I miss you pepe verde... i miss running in and grabbing a gourmet salad and a great plate of ravioli to split with my roomate and satisfy my italian taste buds, all for less than a large salad at whole foods. -

We have been eyeing this place for a while, but we have never been able to get a table. We finally got a table last night, but we quickly realized why: when every corner in NYC feels like the seventh circle of Hell, no one wants to eat hot pasta in warm, crowded storefront.
As for the food, I'm not a pasta lover, but I was intrigued by one of the day's specials: farfalle with calamari, spinach, mushrooms, and a light tomato sauce. (We also had gnocchi bolognese, which was selected by the boyfriend, and I'm not sure I am able to review it properly as I don't really do meat sauce.) The bread was tasty, and it was cheap -- so maybe we'll give it another try when pasta is more seasonably appropriate. -

yyyuuummm. It's a good thing I was looking for this place, because i'm not sure i would have noticed it otherwise. it is pretty small inside, but on a sunday night there were still available tables. It definitely has a nice ambiance, and some of the people there were sitting for a while with no one bugging them.
After taking a good ten minutes to decipher the extensive (and partially faded) menu, me and my bf decided to split the spinach and ricotta penne with tomato sauce, and the oriecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage. The dishes came quickly, along with a cute little basket of bread. Everything was delicious! I will be back...
my bank account was not broken, my stomach was totally satisfied, and my mind did not have to put up with bothery annoying waitstaff while i ate and sat for a bit after! what more could you ask for...

I ventured here with some friends when I first moved to the city and it still sticks out as one of the better Italian places I've been to on whim. I found during those first months that not all NYC restaurants are good and that you have to do research if you want a good meal, but somehow, with Pepe Verde we found great pasta without research.
I recommend the black pasta. yum! -

It's like Pepe Rosso in Soho. (I haven't rated Pepe Rosso yet but I would give that place 5 stars!) I like Pepe Verde for its relative spaciousness but it comes at the price of convenience if you don't live on the west side. I ordered meat lasagna, which was alright because it could have been hotter. On the one hand I understand that a draft was blowing into the place, but that in itself is a problem. The garlic bread is decent and I would recommend it. The plus side is that my friend and I were able to sit there for over two hours. I am willing to go back and order one of their pasta dishes!

I just ordered a take out lunch special (salad and pasta for $8.95) and it was ok. nothing to write home about. the best part about the meal was the price. maybe if i had ordered something different or had eaten at the restaurant (as opposed to having it delivered) it would have been better.
eh. i'll probably try it again ... it's the cheapest pasta place in the west village.
