Thanks again to Yelp for helping me find the most awesome spots in town to enjoy.
4 very very important things:
one: great bagels and cream cheese.
two: iced soy latte was LEGIT.
three: quiet atmosphere with super nice people.
four: $5 for aforementioned food/drink
WIN.
I'm quite the conisseur of coffee shops. Actually, you could say that I've gone to coffee college.
This place satisfies everything I want in a coffee shop. Good coffee, some cheap eats, free wifi, and such a happy upbeat feel between the murals and the billions of happy Cal students that that whole 25 page essay you have to write for your professor tomorrow doesn't seem quite so overwhelming. And then, if it really gets so the world of studying is going to crash down on you at any moment, there's always the absolutely hilarious postcards located by the door to the bathroom.
The only issue with this particular place is that I'm not the only wifi seeker who thinks that Peoples is heaven on earth. Come prepared for the good possibility that there will be no tables available to put your darling little MacBook on. Ah, well, there's always a catch.
I wandered in today because I was waiting for my bike to get fixed at the shop and I thought I'd squeeze in some reading in the meantime. One reason I've never thought to stop here before is because there is seemingly very few seats inside, but I was pleasantly surprised to find many more in the back. Anyway, it's a cozy little cafe with super fast service, free wireless, and plenty of outlets. I got my order before I reached the cash register. The lemon bar was mushy and the powdered sugar on top turned into icing because it was plastic wrapped, but they make a strong latte as far as lattes go. Too bad it took me the longest time to drink it because it was way too hot, even to hold, even dressed in the cupholder and everything.
medium latte + lemon bar = $4.75
In my nearly 10 years of being fully acquainted with the city of Berkeley, I've never actually found a cafe setting to my specific personal liking. Some student-centered establishments on Southside used to satisfy the undergrad craving, but now that I'm on the shy side of 30 with a slightly more evolved concept of 'cafe setting,' I now seek out alternative environments.
I read about People's Cafe months ago upon a random, albeit thoroughly enjoyed, Berkeley visit, but for some odd reason decided not to venture inside. I'm so glad I did today. With my voice turning its finest Kathleen Turner impression and my fat old arse still sore from having to be up by 9am this fine morning, I stumbled into People's on the search for a bagel and cream cheese with lox. Yeah, I know what you're thinking -- you mean with capers, onions, and tomato also? OH HELL YEAH.
Loaded lox sandwich at People's = your choice of bagel (mine is everything, thank you), very VERY lightly toasted, a decent yet not overpowering layer of cream cheese, a couple layers of thinly sliced densely flavored smoked salmon, a sprinkling of red onion, another faint yet perfect sprinkling of capers, and a nice thick slice of ripe tomato. $4.75 is a small price to pay for perfection.
A hot chai au lait that has the faintest hints of both sweet and spice = intravenously delivered directly to this voice-deficient gal's heart. My morning sojourn cost a pretty penny -- $9 including tip -- but the incredible tastes melding together in my mouth upon returning to my hotel room were all worth the extra cash.
It's a lovely Berkeley morning; the air is crisp and cool, the sun is shining brightly more for aesthetics really than for any service of warmth, and at 10am the city is just starting to come alive in its traditionally lagging (in a great way) weekday mornings. However, People's gets an extra notch toward perfection for this: don't know the back story, didn't ask -- but the guy behind the counter was paid by a kindly young gentleman who seemed to have 'forgotten' some kind of payment at some point in the past (yeah baby, you like my fantastic skills of inference there?), and the GBTC handed said gentleman a fresh cup of coffee on the house. This gentleman, who immediately struck up a friendly casual convo with me as a result, was so excited and touched that he walked out of People's with not one but two beautiful smiles on customers' faces, not excluding this one. God I love Berkeley -- thanks for the morning smile, People's!
ETA: I'm definitely bringing my laptop in here next time and spending a few quasi-productive hours inside. Not only is there free wifi and extensive seating (People's has a deceptively small-appearing store front), but there's a nice little library shelf of random books to read in case your own material isn't stimulating enough. Awesome.
scene: college kids studying, free wifi, outlets everywhere, cool post cards by the restroom, open until midnite.
food: ehh, I usually stick to bagels and cream cheese here. I'm not a fan of their sandwiches. Local cookie carrier.
drink: lil tea pots and 3 different sized lattes are good- not spectacular but better than Starbucks.
Tip: hold your breath before you go enter the bathroom. It always smells funky in there, ugh, hate that.
cheap food (lots of bagel sandwiches), good coffee, nice location, free wi-fi, lots of seating, usually good classical or jazz playing, free refills on drinks, and most importantly, unpretentious. I really love this place.
Ever since I moved to Berkeley, I have found myself frequently at People's cafe. Whether it is to study, to meet a friend for coffee, or to grab a quick bite to eat, People's Cafe is my choice! The staff is always so friendly and outgoing. There is typically ample seating. The wifi works really well and there are tons of power outlets! The food is pretty tasty (although not top-notch) and inexpensive. Most items run between four and seven dollars. In addition to all these other positives, they are open early in the morning and late into the evening (midnight!). I recommend this place to all of my friends and would certainly give it a 5/5!
I am haunting the People's Cafe AS I WRITE.
Positives include excellent tea & coffee, decent food (that is, more importantly, inexpensive), and free wifi. I think my favorite aspect of the People's Cafe, though, is that I can literally sit here for HOURS, getting hot water refills on my teapot, and no one minds even the tiniest bit. The guy behind the counter even thought it was hilarious that I went through so much tea.
I love this place. Lots of places to sit, as mentioned by other reviews there are TONS of outlets, and it's easy to focus here.
The only thing I don't like is this totally typical CRAZY Berkeley lady sitting next to me right now....seriously, guys, you should not be looking at the things she's looking at on the internet in a public place. That's just sick.
....Not that I was snooping on her computer screen or anything.
Right.
This cafe has been my little hideout whenever I needed a quiet and reliable place to work. Although the general lack of windows and stuffy backroom are not the most ideal for casual hangout, this place has a strange way of keeping me focused and productive. I've been here plenty of times since my last review, including pulling an 11-hour marathon yesterday as I frantically completed an important research document. It wasn't until yesterday that I started to see this place differently for its true value, and for all the intangible wealth that exists.
Although their food is short of earth shattering and never spectacular, no other cafés can beat their diverse array of all-day breakfast items, sandwiches, bagels, salads, espresso drinks and smoothies. The taste is as consistent as you can get and portions are always generous. Since the last review I've tried the following:
Spicy chicken wrap ($5.25) & Turkey wrap ($4.75): The lavash falls apart a little too quickly but it had plenty of fillings to hit the spot. It is best to have it when it is served warm and toasty with the non-fried spicy chicken being my fave. I thought their turkey is decent but it could have been way better had I not ask them to skip the mayo and cheese. Nice portion and good price.
Egg bagel ($2.75): You might need to manually add salt and pepper to the mix but this bagel is served warm with a large scrambled egg in the center. These little toasty hand warmers are so comforting and useful during my most stressful times.
Turkey sandwich ($4.75): The sandwich came with very good toasted french roll to work in concert with turkey, tomato, red onions, sprouts, lettuce, and pickles. My addition of provolone cheese was nicely melted to bring all the flavors together into a delicious focus.
Mediterranean plate ($6.25): My dinner last night includes a decent hummus with drip olive oil on top, babaghanouge, falafel, delicious grape leaves, block of feta, kalamata olives and warm pita. Although the nice looking dish was decent and not the best, it was still a great value for the price. It was a lot of food and I finished it all.
Large soy Americano ($3.25): I really like their coffee and espresso drinks. It's always strong and potent. They took good care of me yesterday by giving me a freebie after dinner. That really made my day and they took time to thank me for the visit as I was about to leave.
Teas: I absolutely love their iced hisbiscus tea ($2 medium). It's very refreshing and a must get if you are a tea drinker. I also enjoy their loose leaf ($2.50) vanilla green, rooibos, and genmaicha to round out my top three.
Yesterday they were open until midnight so it felt good to know that I had some extra time to revise and send off the document. Service was topnotch as always. 4 stars for the structural layout but outstanding service lends itself a 5 stars outcome.
Power to the People!

My favorite coffee shop in Berkeley hands down. Friendly staff, good coffee, decent food (cheap), good internet, cool vibe and people. Tons of outlets for computers, tons of seating, and really awesome murals and paintings on the wall. Sometimes they play some good music too. People's is the best.
Lately, when I was going, it was getting pretty hot in there. And they rarely ever have paper towels or toilet paper. But other than that, this place is the best.
There's only two reasons why I would attempt to find parking around this end of Shattuck:
Reason #1: To drop off or pick up my clothes from my new found trusty tailor, Zoltan @ Advanced European Tailoring around the corner.
Reason #2: To hideout in this unsuspecting cafe & just do all the things that you like to do on your downtime.. read, brainstorm your next painting or potential places of photointerest, etc. Somehow, I am able to concentrate & listen to my thoughts through all the hustle & bustle that tends to surround you in here.
Don't try their tuna though, they used the pink meat tuna which tasted like it had 3 servings of Mercury that went along with it.. eck! That aside, they've got a nice selection of organic food & teas. Fast, reliable WiFi & plenty of outlets at every table. Pretty chill spot to come out to study or spend some down time & get work done.
In one short year of graduate school this place definitely found a place in my heart.
The prices here are great. I come here at least 3 times a week during the academic year for both my soy lattes and lunch sandwiches. Both are so reasonably priced! You can get a GIANT warm, delicious, friendly wrap with your choice of meat and cheese for under $6. I just want to hug it.
The ladies and gentleman who work the counter are very friendly and ridiculously efficient. They definitely have regulars and get their drinks for them before they ever even reach the counter. I've seen it happen. Where else does that happen anymore?!
The WiFi is steady, making this a great place to work.
It's not as modern/brand new looking as other coffee shops and I've heard at least one very cleanly friend complain that the bathroom turns her off. However, it always smells like bleach in there, so they must be doing something right.
Good hot chocolate, lots of places to sit and read while drinking. Alas, I was here on a day when it was really warm and the lack of AC or even fans made it a bit uncomfortable [and perhaps hot chocolate was not the appropriate beverage].
As long as I'm still in finals, I'm going to keep reviewing cafes. The sentence should read, as long as I'm still in finals, I'm going to keep studying diligently in cafes. But whatever.
I had high hopes for People's Cafe -- it definitely has two of the things I love most, free wi-fi and plenty of outlets. But everything else falls short, and reminds me how wifi/outlets are not always enough. To start with, my bottle of Juice Squeeze and one biscotti cost me $3.75. Damn. How do either of those things cost more than $1.50 each????
There are only a few tables in the front portion of the cafe. The majority of the tables are concentrated in the back part, which is windowless and thus utterly without natural lighting. The tables are rickety and have unusually sharp edges, meaning that my arms are currently lined with creases from resting on the table. The overall atmosphere is just ever so slightly grimy for some reason, and frankly, the mural of the volcano and lighting that's across from me right now is kind of alarming. I don't need any additional things to be alarmed by right now.
Should've walked a couple extra blocks to Village Grounds.
This may be the best place to get coffee in Berkeley,
The Americano is always good also strong and Not burnt !!
Bagels are fresh and they sell ABC cookies mmm
I just wish they sold Vegan donuts :)
They also have FREE WIFI and plenty of power outlets
Id give them 5* if there was more Vegan options on the menu.
I write this review as a sit in People's enjoying free wifi and a Egg, cheese, and spinach bagel.
Actually this review may just be a procrastination tool since I came here to write a paper that is due in a few hours (oh the life of a grad student). Regardless of the purpose of this timely chosen review.. People's rocks my socks.
The employees are very friendly, the bagel sandwiches are yummy, they have a great variety of tea (both loose leaf and bagged) and of course the smoothies!
I tend to study or write a paper better when there are others around me doing the same.. the ample tables makes this great for me to muster up some peer support.. and there are tons of plugs and it's always quiet enough so you are able to do your work, yet with enough white noise so you don't feel that awkward silence...
Ok.. back to my paper.. boo
Don't ask me how but I randomly arrived at the doorsteps of this cute cafe while trying to get from Cory hall to my apartment which is next to the Foothill dorms...(yea if you know the Berkeley campus, you'd be like wat the eff too haha)
This indeed a good place to study. Free Wifi. Lots of outlets (good news for me since I spilled wine on my macbook and it can only operate if plugged into a wall socket...FML..but people's FTW!).
Good variety of breakfast and light lunch items on their menu. I really enjoyed my Chicken Salad Wrap. The salad filling was freshly tossed with a healthy amount of dressing (oh, and with alfalfa sprouts too). The wrap itself is unique in that it's not a normal cold tortilla wrap; it's actually toasted, crispy and a little flakey. Good light meal to try on a hot day. I also tried the Spicy Chicken Wrap but didn't enjoy it as much as the Chicken Salad since I though the chicken filling was too dense to complement the light flakey wrap.
My friend Greg and I dubbed this place "Shitty Music Cafe" a while back. Lately, they've been doing a lot better in that department so I've been studying there pretty frequently now.
If you can get a seat in the front room, this place is a wonderful cafe to study at, however the back room is way too dungeon-like for my taste. The lighting's bad and there aren't any windows. Free wireless is a huge bonus, and compared to most Berkeley cafes, the clientele is one of the least distracting.
Food's not bad but in general if I'm going to study AND eat I go somewhere else. I'd recommend the lox bagel but for some reason every time I go the only bagels they have left are cinnamon raisin so I'm stuck getting a wrap or something equally horrendous. Don't get a wrap. Their house iced coffee though is delicious.
Not bad! The chick at the counter was super chill and had a sweet smile on her face. I got an iced house coffee. Wasn't digging their "plain, organic" soymilk. 10g of sugar a serving? Yikes. I don't care if it's natural sugar or not. I wanted to save that for that sweet bar with all the coconut that my friend and I shared! Yum!Place is set up very nicely. Lots of students on their computers utilizing the free wifi. :-) Nice place overall!
My search for local Wi-Fi spots in the East Bay keeps on getting better and better. This place was stumbled in on by accident with Jake The Snake mentioning it to me as a rendezvous point several days ago. And even, at this very moment typing up this review it has been my haven to Yelp, conduct business, and of course chat away with friends over the Holiday Season.
Neighbor's with Ichiban restaurant, this place has an eclectic feel with a nice comfortable home vibe, you can relax while sipping on some coffee or eating a tasty bagel (my favorite being the Fresh Lox, holding everything but the Salmon and Creme Cheese , yum!). My only qualm with this place is that I wish it had pillows, so that it wouldn't make your ass sore while sitting down for long periods of time typing away furiously at the screen.
An abundance of outlets and tables, and it's never crowded (perhaps the regular Cal school year, it could be packed), The art and music fit the theme of funky colors and classical music clashing to my relaxed mood. This place is probably my top spot thus far, and has trumped all the other competition when it comes to coffee, deli offerings, and overall wi-fi accessibility. You're worth the $3.00 round trip ticket on the BART stopping by and letting my fingers doing all the talking.
Cheers People's Cafe!
Egg bagel sandwich, bitches. Throw some mushrooms on that shiz while you're at it.
Surprisingly, this place also has a bunch of candy and individual packs of name-brand cookies for sale.
I'm so coming here the next time I either a) want a solid breakfast sandwich and strong cup of coffee or b) have a craving for exactly four Oreos.
This place kicks ass! Fantastic coffee, plentiful electricity, and multiple free, fast wifi hotspots. They even open late! Everything you need (other than talent, luck, and ability) to take over Silicon Valley is available here, so there's no excuse anymore.
Free wi-fi. Lots of tables. Quiet enough, but not too quiet that you get the librarian glare from other patrons. The boy and I came around 10 on a rainy Tuesday night to get our study on. Lots of tables, lots of outlets, good lighting.
He had regular coffee, I had the spicy mocha which tasted different from a regular mocha, but not in that weird "did i just eat a taco" way. It was surprisingly delicious! Also shared a chocolate PB cookie which was decent.
Will definitely be back for those nights when ALL the other coffee shops close and they don't have free wi-fi anyway, so suck it.
After dinner, I wanted to get a chai latte or something warm and we stumbled upon this place.
When looking at the drink menu, what caught my eye was the chai au lait and chai mocha. I decided to get the chai mocha and it was really good. Rich hot chocolate with a spicy kick. People's Cafe offered a variety of food - bagels, sandwiches, falafels, and pastries. I was really tempted to get a coconut chocolate bar, but I already had enough sweets for the day.
The first thing I noticed was how quiet this place was except for the soft jazz music playing in the background. Everyone was typing away on their laptops or studying. I felt like my friends and I were the only ones who were not and was disturbing others by our talking. Anyways, there's plenty of seating and free wifi is a big plus.
I plan to come back here again to relax and read book. Also I have a coconut chocolate bar with my name on it!
"People's" Café is a misnomer. It should be called DEVIL'S Cafe. Have you seen their phone number??? 666-0666!!!!
I was downright flabbergasted when I walked by and saw the SIGN OF THE BEAST emblazoned boldly on their glass front!
So of course I had to come by and try their coffee.
The coffee was run-of-the-mill. It did not wow me.
In addition, I was saddened to see they did NOT offer Non-Fat milk NOR Splenda in their coffee condiments station. That, in my faux-healthy state of being, is a no-no. Or is that a naux-naux? Anyway, this is USEFUL for anyone who is on a low-carb/low-fat diet like myself.
But I dare not say this out loud for I may invoke the wrath of the Devil.
A friend I have not seen in 8 months suggested People's to meet and catch up. I arrived a little early and ordered a latte. While the coffee was totally decent, the atmosphere of the cafe was somewhat off-putting.
For one, although there was some music playing, the cafe was nearly silent. Maybe it was mid-term week, I don't know.
Second, the place is stuffy and hot. They have what apparently are decorative ceiling fans. I should not call them fans as they were not actually fanning any air.
I sat in the back room decorated with a "science" theme. It had a mural of planetary objects and the equation E=MC^2. How interesting!!!
Anyways, once my friend arrived we felt uncomfortable talking in that environment and so we left. If you come to People's: 1) sit in the front 2) bring a book or laptop or 3) get your coffee to go.
A great place to get some work done. It's free WiFi if you are a customer. There are plenty of seats at the back with outlets, yes, electronic outlets! The food and beverage choices are amazing too. I really enjoy working and sipping iced coffee in this cafe. The only downside is the bathroom, it's a little dirty at times.
When I finally turn in my thesis, I'd like to mention this place by name on a Special Thanks page. Too bad I don't know what I'm supposed to call it.
People's (Coffee/Tea/Sandwiches/Salads/etc.) has every little thing that counts towards making my studying experience less excruciating. To begin with, they're close to campus, take credit cards, and play cool music. Legitimately free and satisfyingly fast internet, lots of tables, and an outlet at almost every one. No need to watch my step for laptop cords running across the floor.
And then there are the hours - oh, the hours! I'm not one to care what time a cafe opens, but I certainly appreciate one that doesn't close until midnight (even on Sunday). Most 'hours of operation' signs in Berkeley don't even have space for a second digit.
Their menu is huge; there is something to fit every appetite and every diet. But the really good news is that you can actually eat most of it. This place put an end to my equating good grades with gustatory abuse (as long as I pretend they don't serve that falafel [read: DO NOT order the falafel]). But the sandwiches, salads, breakfasts, and topped bagels definitely fly, with fresh ingredients and impressive ratios of certain things that tend to bring out the miser in other cafes (read: anything with avocado here is very avocadoful).
They also have a nice selection of potent loose leaf teas, of which you can order a whole pot for $2.50. Coffee ranges from average to good, although I think very few places really distinguish themselves on that quality alone. People's has even invested in the probable future of cafes (considering the scary abundance of hot days this November) by buying a juicer and a blender, so smoothies are an option here too.
The bottom line: this place is designed so that I really never have a reason to study somewhere else. Unless I want falafel.
The People's Cafe is great for one thing: hunkering down with your laptop and getting some work done. They have free wifi, and there's an electric socket at least for every other spot. In fact, they have *two* wifi access points, so if one of them is slow you've got a backup.
My strategy when visiting is usually to scope out whether or not they have any spots available (weekends can get busy), and then order a cheap drink (usually just a large coffee) and then sit down and get to work. I've had some really productive work sessions here -- it works out well because about 75% of the people there are also on their laptops, so it's usually pretty quiet.
I won't dispute the mediocre reviews that people have given to the food and drinks, but I sort of think that's missing the point of this cafe -- it's a great place to get work done!
I ordered a felafel sandwich. The counter staff said they'd bring it to my table. They served it to someone else instead. They were apologetic about it. The felafel was mushy and bland, like squishy bread.
Now, I admit, I have high standards for my felafel set by Fertile Grounds on Shattuck. They make a great felafel in a pita, as hot as you want it and with a hot pepper on the side, mmm.
On the plus side, I like the interior of People's Cafe. It is a good place to work, and the staff are friendly. There's free wireless, outlets at every table, and plenty of seating. I'll give People's another try some time and see if I have a better experience.
I've been back several times for coffee and breakfast. I love their bagel breakfast sandwiches, you can drink their plain coffee without gagging, and I appreciate their assortment of energy bars (because I like to hibernate in my lab). Plus, they've always been really nice to me and get me soy milk for my coffee when I ask.
One thing that I ordered that was a little weird was the granola bowl. It's cool that you can get it to go...yogurt, granola, strawberries, apples, bananas...and WTF oranges?! I might try it again sans oranges.

Experienced People's Cafe for the first time yesterday. Real calming and quiet place to do work type of atmosphere. I bought the roast beef sandwich which was pretty good. They added sprouts on it which was different.
Employees were friendly and the place was pretty interesting too. Seating could use some cushions for those who don't have extra meat on their bums - too bad for you. ;P
It isn't a "sit and talk" kind of cafe as my friend and I were whispering but it's all good. Everyone was busy doing their work on their laptops.
Next time I go, I'll try a cookie since I do have a thing for sweets.
I'll recommend this cafe to people for sure.
Two thumbs!
People's Cafe is the most convenient cafe for Berkeley students.
-Open late (12 midnight), great when the Cal library closes at 9p during the summer
-Plenty of seating
-Decently sized tables that fit a laptop + schoolwork
-Free wifi
-A lot of power outlets for said free wifi + laptop
-Strong coffee
-Assortment of cold drinks
-Good food (not exactly a destination for food, but it's good)
-Fair prices
-Decent restroom
-Convenient location
-The ability to stay as long as your body can take the hard seating
-Takes American Express
-Friendly servers (those short Latina girls are cool)
Sure, you can probably get better coffee at Peet's, better pastries at Cheese Board, and tastier sandwiches at Cafe Panini. But that's not the point of People's Cafe, and People's really delivers on convenience for the student.
This is a great place to study, free wi-fi, plenty of plugs for your computer, strong black coffee (seriously!), various snacks, sandwiches, and salads. It can get busy at night since its close to the UCB campus. Since I'm job-hunting and do not want to be distracted at home, I can sit here all day.
I would give it 5 stars but the strong cleaning solvents sent me running out the door one night, a guy who works behind the counter wasn't very friendly (the girls there are super nice), and I almost had someone try to break into the bathroom because they thought it was "accidentally locked" without anyone in it (hello?! knock on the door first).
Parking can be a pain in the ass since its downtown Berkeley.
This is my go-to cafe near work. Yali's is probably "better" in overall quality of food and drink, but People's is really good and I really like the people who work there. It's a different vibe than Yali's - a bit less hipster UC and a bit more downtown Berkeley (but in a good way).
Coffee is consistently good. Not amazing, but good. Lattes also good. Americano's a bit disappointing (Tully's by BART makes the best ones in the 'hood, believe it or not).
Plenty of muffins, cookies, etc, but they're of the generic kind you can get in a deli. But sometimes that fills the void, no?
Breakfast and lunch food is surprisingly good! Big portions, and I love that you can get a side caesar with a sandwich. Not quite the gourmet vibe that Yali's has, but more choices and a bit less "precious" here at People's.
Free wifi, plenty of seating, and a few outdoor tables in case you want to watch the goings-on at the infamous Marine recruiters across the street.
This place is pretty good--I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. I come here 5-6 days a week to do research and/or relax with my laptop. Lots of good points:
-the food and drinks are almost uniformly good (avoid the smoothies), with several options for vegans like me;
-the seating is plentiful, with an outlet at nearly every seat;
-$1 unlimited refills on iced tea, free extra hot water for tea, pretty reasonable and accommodating staff overall;
-the music is good and not too loud;
-free wi-fi;
-decent bathrooms.
Give it a try!
If you are looking a great place to study, this is the spot! They have amazing services, free wifi, and a plethora of outlets to keep you charged and ready to go! I love the art work and music here as well; it makes it an enjoyable study spot. Hope y'all enjoy it as much as I have.
Cute little cafe with lot of students studying on the side tables with their laptops and their sandwiches.
I ordered a falafel in pita sandwich for $4.25. I didn't eat it right away and took it to go and the pita got pretty soggy. There was a little too sauce for my taste and it overwhelmed the falafel. But other than that it was good. Good price for lunch and sure filled me up.
They have a wide variety of sandwiches, wraps, bagels, etc.
After courting many of the eligible cafes in downtown Berkeley, People's is hereby rewarded with another star! Meritable is the corresponding outlet to every table, TWO wi-fi networks, and the easy-going counter gals that have allowed me to stay for four hours stretches and remain sweet. Hello, office #1!

I have recently discovered People's as a good study place, if you're the cafe-studying kind. Decent wifi and later hours and lots of outlets and a bathroom, and of course caffeine and food on demand.
Recommendations: Mexican hot chocolate, herbal tea (by the pot, it's only $2.50 and makes 4 cups!), Mediterranean plate, coconut macaroons.
I think the staff there knows me by now. Last time I went, my boyfriend let himself behind the counter and attempted to teach them how to make mate tea properly. They were quite amused and we ended up with a free cup of tea :P
Minus one star for the temperature - it can get uncomfortably warm - and the ceiling fans that make it seem like there's a strobe light on. I know it's minor, but when you're reading under it for 7 hours, it really gets to you.
Anyway, this is one of the lesser-known Berkeley coffeeshop gems. Definitely worth checking out.
