So my recent foray into gourmet cooking at home (yes cooking lessons so I can get my French on) gives me a renewed appreciation for quality spices.

And for high end spices, dear Yelpians, Penzey's is priceless. An astonishing array of outstanding spices, al with little tasting jars. Pure inspiration for that next dinner.  Interesting mixes and educated spicologists to make suggetions about harmonoious choices.

Do I like Penzys? Um, I spent a pay check here, so yeah, I kinda like it.

Good spot for spices and I stop in every time I am in town to pick up some quality stuff. The staff is usually helpful (Except for my last visit a few days ago they seemed a bit snooty). I am a fan of good cooking with a background to back it up and they have just about everything you could hope for to stock the cabinets. One recommendation: Try the Vietnam Cinnamon It is to die for!!!

The type of person that wanders into a spice shop, is usually also the person who has a heightened sense of smell and a good palate. If you can cook...if you are a good/fantastic cook....you will like this shop. There jars big enough for you to put most of your face into so that you can fully smell each spice before you decide to buy it. I like that there are also suggestions about what spice compliments which food. Growing up in rural Minnesota, I wasn't taught much beyond salt, pepper and garlic salt and cinnamon....so I am still learning about them. I picked up their catalog too..which also is full of fantastic looking recipes.
I would like to see more whole spices that I could grind myself. It makes me sad that people use spices that have been in their cupboard for 10 years...buy some fresh spices at Penzeys !!!

A great shop, easy to find things. With all the spices you feel like you can cook. They even have a little kiddie area where my son can sit and color while I pick out spices.

I have become obsessed with Penzeys.  Walking into this store just makes you want to cook up a storm.  I really enjoy the ladies that work at Penzeys as well, they are always so nice and heplful and never try to push sales on you.
I don't think I have walked out of this place without a purchase, their extracts are amazing and the hot cocoa you can buy is just delicious and not overwhelmingly sweet.  I also would recommend the arizona dreaming spice, it is delicious on meat as well as on salads.

I was soooo thrilled when Penzey's opened an outlet in Colorado. Honestly, I would have driven to Pueblo if that's where the store was. It's that good, and that much fun to shop here.

The catalog and online shopping are fine, but you can't see and smell the spices. The first time I visited a Penzey's store in Kansas City, I realized I wasn't interested in the things that had caught my eye in the catalog -- but wow, I was turned on by the stuff I thought I wasn't interested in. Fantastic. I think I smelled every jar in the store, and there are lots of jars.

The Vietnamese cinnamon will blow you away. Penzey's has other varieties of cinnamon too, but smell them in order of least to most aromatic and -- if you're like me -- you'll go with the Vietnamese cinnamon. You can buy dried lemon zest, lovely vanilla beans, spice mixtures with or without salt, exotic spices to make foreign dishes at home, and so much more. I love reading the descriptions, and there are recipe suggestions too. There is sweet curry powder that adds flavor without heat; what a great addition to chicken soup! If you want it hotter, there are about seven other curry powders. Mmmm, this store makes me want to COOK!

You can buy small to large bottles of the products, and many spices are available in bulk bags, too. If you need shaker bottles, those are available separately.

Anyone who likes to cook (or eat?) should visit this store. And yes, the staff people are super-friendly and helpful. Go, explore, have fun, and try some fresh new spices. You'll be glad you did.

Many of us have been getting Penzeys Spice catalog, now we have a store where you can smell the goods.

This store is wonderful.  They have a huge selection and you can spend hours in there smelling every kind of spice.  They have regular spices (oregano, basil, peppercorns), hard to find spices and quality spice blends.  They have a good selection of baking items including multiple types of cocoa and vanilla been pods.  Best of all, everything is very fresh.

Another nice treat is they have gift boxes with spice combinations for every body you know - newlyweds, grillers, bakers, by type of food, etc. or you can make your own combo and have them ship it to the recipient.  The presentation is very professional with bay leaves and other decorations tucked in with the spice jars.

The best part about Penzeys is how reasonable they price their goods.  The comparable spice from the grocery store is much more costly and is not half as fresh.

This is a fantastic place to spend an hour and it is in a nice little shopping/dining area in old Arvada.

Why not take a nice afternoon and go strolling through Old Towne Arvada?  You'll encounter so many cool little shops.  Penzey's is just one of them.  My friend Melissa made a big deal about taking a road trip up to Arvada to go shopping for spices at Penzeys.  I sorta scrunched my nose up at her.  Who the heck goes to that much trouble for spices?  King Soopers has a fine selection.  But once you get to Penzey's you'll get it.  It's calming and soothing and your brain will begin to light up depending on your childhood memories.  Do memories of cinnamon & nutmeg make you smile?  Do you find your happy place from strong, vivid spices?  It's all there and then some.  You'll encounter spices you've never heard of and really interesting blends that are all Penzey's.

The staff are either helpful - directing you and giving you recommendations OR appropriately aloof, leaving you to browse.  The first time I walked in the door, I started planning a series of dinner parties that I figured would get me a spot on the Food Channel as an up & coming talent.  You get the picture.  It's a small price to pay to try a new spice that's the real thing; or bring a new spice blend into your pantry.  Buy a gift box for a friend (email me for my address).

I actually went to the location in Boulder. Looks like it just opened so maybe that's why the location isn't listed.
Anyway, the earlier review that said this is like a candy store for a grown up was so right!  It was sensory heaven!  They are more expensive than the regular stuff at the grocery store, but open that first jar of any spice in the store and you will know why.  The fragrance is out of this world.  I bought whole chilis, cumin and cinnamon.  The recipe cards scattered around the store help with new ideas for these spices and many others.
    I will be back soon!

This place smells like you are walking into a bazaar in the back streets of India! So amazing!!

It's worth a visit just for the ambient smells, but you'll be amazed at what you can find.

A friend has been trying the various recipes which Penzey's places near all the sections of spices, and EVERY ONE is a home run...seriously.

Doubts? Just try Penzey's cinnamon instead of "Kroger Brand" and you'll never go back to generic - that's a promise!

HINT: Sign up for the monthly catalog and you get a free coupon every month for a free jar of spice...a great deal and a great way to discover Penzey's. The right spices make a HUGE difference in your meals.

P.S. I love the little "faux kitchen" they built in the back...nice decor touch. This place feels like home right when you walk in the door!

One of my favorite stores. I'm like a big kid in a grown-up candy store when I'm in Penzeys. Prices are the same or better than brand-name spices in the grocery stores, and the quality is SO much better. Plus, you can smell EVERY single spice in the store to figure out which one is right for you.

Staff are knowledgeable and have frequently helped to steer me toward the right purchase for me. With so many types of curry, cinnamon, pepper, etc. it's hard for the average cook to know what's what....but that's what they're there for!

    HIghlights?
Country french vinaigrette dressing spice mix. Buy it. Immediately. Forego the suggested red wine vinegar and use a good balsamic in the mix instead. HEAVEN.
Giant bottle of Mexican vanilla for less than $30. Can't beat that.
Italian herb seasing- good, fresh, and you can get a lot of it for cheap!

The following spices from Penzey's are in my cabinet right now, to give you an idea of how awesome they are:
Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla sugar, Italian seasoning, herbes de Provence, cumin, alleppo red chili powder, Chicago steak seasoning, garam masala, Cajun seasoning, adobo, cocoa powder (dutch process, high fat), Chinese 5-spice, pumpkin pie spice, allspice, poultry seasoning, coriander, Mexican vanilla, basil, oregano, cayanne, cinnamon sticks, cloves, cream of tartar, dill, rosemary, rocky Mountain seasoning, and I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting.

My next purchases will be some sort of chili seasonings and maybe some special Kosher salts! Oh, and seriously, I've never seen fresh vanilla beans as cheap as they are at Penzeys.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! When I moved out of the Midwest I thought I was going to have to place all my orders through their catalog. I am so happy them here in Colorado. They are so helpful in the store. They even give you tips on how to use the spices, like beer can chicken with Fox Point Seasoning.

The Wedding Crate gift sets are wonderful. Inside there are cute little extras that talk about marriage and why the spice ties into that.

ALSO, BIG thumbs up to all their pepper choices!!!!

Fun for cooking novices (that's me); I can only imagine what it's like for cooking pros! So many spices, jars to smell and sample all of them. Best smelling store this side of the Mississippi. Whether you know what you're looking for or not, the staff is helpful. I recommend grabbing one of the free catalogs they offer so you can browse the spices later at your leisure, as well. (Catalogs also have recipes.)

A trip to Penzey's is like traveling around the world on a magic carpet. You are whisked from the US to France to Greece to India to China and back to Mexico and every place in between. They have fabulous sample jars that you can stick your nose in and breathe in another way of life. (After a while you may start to develop a headache however, so sniff with caution.) They have every spice I've ever intended to buy and hundreds that I've never heard of. They also have very reasonable prices. We've stopped buying spices at the grocery store all together. The store has a great layout that encourages wandering through their wares. The employees are very helpful and friendly, and the free catalog always has awesome recipes. Their gift boxes make unique classy gifts for any food lover. I'm always more than happy to drive the 45 minutes it takes me to get there.

The first time I walked into Penzeys I decided that I was in heaven.  I love to cook and so this place is my go-to spot for spices and seasonings.  They suggested the raspberry enlightenment to us.  They gave us a page with several recipes (including using it on veggies and salmon, and to make a salad dressing) and it was AMAZING!  The employees are so helpful and kind as well.  I love this place!

Penzeys, I love you! You have saved me from the listless, flavorless, expensive herbs and spices of yore. Your shelves are teeming with everything one needs to keep a happy cook in a happy kitchen. There are many unique varieties of even the simplest things like salt and pepper. Anyone who has 20+ types of salt gets a WIN in my book. But you go above and beyond with combinations and flavors. Just reading all of the names on the bottles and bags makes me want to spend the next 12 months chained to my kitchen whipping up dishes inspired from countries near and far. Really love the cheap dried chiles, shallot salt, smoked salt and rosemary powder. Amounts = large, prices = low. Even the shipping on your website is inexpensive. I will never stop at a dollar store for a shaker of spices again, not that I ever did that.

Penzeys is another great place to purchases fresh spices and spice blends for all your cooking and baking needs. I'm very happy they finally opened a store in Old Towne Arvada (with another on its way in Littleton, I'm told), so now I don't have to pay shipping fees. I've been ordering from Penzeys for years and my cooking has definitely improved using them. (Also check out Savory Spice Shop, a wonderful, local place that grinds spices and makes blends).
