Pennybacker Bridge
4 reviews for Pennybacker Bridge
Why 5 stars for this iconic bridge? Simple. There are no lights on it of any kind. None. So at night, it doesn't spoil the terrific moonlit view you can get from the nearby ridge, or Lake Austin, or as you drive across. Totally tasteful.
The bridge is notable for being anchored only to the land (doesn't have to go underwater).
The Ridge Above The Bridge has a great view of the hills along the river (rivaling Mt. Bonnell) and is also great for a quick hike, if you can ignore the garbage that sh**heads often leave at the top. But once you sneak through the super-secret hole cut in a boundary fence, you can walk along a classic Austiny trail for a mile (?) or so.
What??? I hate you, you stupid bridge. You're just a place for me to get stuck in rush hour traffic. YOU are just ANOTHER reminder of our sucky transportation system and lack of planning in the city I grew up in! BOOOOO!

You'll never view it the same way again once you've climbed it.
I'm not sayin' I have... I'm just sayin' that if you DO, don't let your friend spit sunflower seed hulls on bridge... makes the trek down a bit more precarious.
Again, not sayin' I've done it, but I recommend going up the NE support, wearing all black, doing it on a moonless night, and shortly after a big rain (so that most of the loose rust is washed away).
Nothin' beats Taco C tortillas, queso, and salsa on top.
So I hear.
(PS: this is about as "useful" as I get)

Everyone calls this the 360 Bridge or the Rusty Bridge but it was actually named in honor of Texas Department of Transportation engineer Percy V. Pennybacker Jr.
Allen Park includes the boat ramp entry directly below the bridge on the south side and a grassy area for fishing and picnicking.
I have climbed the cliffs on the north side of the bridge to look south, east and west to the amazing views. My favorite view of this bridge is the dynamic view when you walk to where the bridge meets the earth on the southeast corner. Amazing to see the construction techniques that were used.
You will never look at this bridge the same way once you have seen these enormous connections.
But whatever you do, do NOT climb it as you will get rust on your butt and spill your Taco C tortillas, queso, and salsa.
