Penmar, what can I say, it is close to golfing perfection, for the money. For an amateur/intermediate golfer such as myself, it is pretty much all I could ever ask for.

In all seriousness, Penmar is a fabulous course, for the money. I think a round is still less than $20. It's in great shape, is very forgiving, and the weather is typically fantastic. As mentioned by another yelper, I used to play Rancho Park frequently, until I discovered Penmar!

Couple things worth noting. As someone else said, it is a bit interesting playing in a fivesome, but you get used to it. There is also the constant air traffic from Santa Monica Airport, but again, you get used to it. Lastly, don't come here expecting to play 9 holes in 2 hours, it can be a bit slow, but just be patient.  These few items are what kept me from giving this 5 stars, and remember that is relative. I would challenge anyone to find another 9 hole course that is as nice and as reasonable as Penmar.

The place is so relaxing. Good lil exec 9 hole course with great conditions. Place is perfect to play with family or friends, not your competitive challenge though. Very green course, with flowers at the 1st tee, just nice and calming. Greens are beautiful and soft. Grass is longer than most courses, but rolls very well and true on it. Course is in pretty good shape, just a little pricey for what it is.

No one has reviewed Penmar?  I am a big fan of this golf course.  It is only nine holes and there are no electric carts to shuttle your lazy ass around.  The best thing is:  you can play nine holes, carrying your clubs and you'll feel like you've done enough healthy stuff to warrant a stop at The Counter for burger lunch.  Win, win!

It is not fancy.  Or long.  But they keep the course and the greens in better shape than some other LA County courses that I have played (yes, Roosevelt, I'm talking to you).  I just wish there was a full-fledged driving range here too.

It also can be fun to watch the planes taking off from Santa Monica airport directly overhead.  Just don't be mad when the engines on Tom Cruise's antique plane cause you to duff a drive!

I almost forgot!  It is only $15 for a round of golf.  Yes, you heard me.  $15 per person for 9 holes of golf.  Get out there already!

Played Penmar on Saturday with an old buddy of mine. I had never been here, but I'm trying to hit all the LA courses by the end of the year. Not a completely daunting task but still a lot of golf to be played.

So I love this new course. I know I raved about Eaton canyon before, and it still is near and dear to my heart, but Penmar is amazing. The grass is completely well kept, the greens are immaculate considering it's a muni, and there are signs instructing people on how to wave people up on par 3s to speed up play. It's not super hilly like Eaton Canyon, but I find that a plus. It's also not completely flat, so the course seems interesting.

Six par 4s and three par 3s of varying length make up the course. The longest is a 398 par 4, but they're all long enough I was able to get a realistic work out of the new driver I got (picked up a used Taylormade R580XD. Most of my clubs are almost 15 years old and some low-level department store brand, so just upgrading the club gave me a ton more distance) without ending up with half swing approaches of 40-60 yards. I'm trying this thing where I think about the next shot instead of just trying to hit the biggest club possible. Actually helps me because those half swing shots that are a little longer than a pitch but shorter than a full swing kill my game a lot.

I digress. Anyway, it was a great course. We played the twilight because I'm poor, and it was only $14 (12 for residents of LA, but since my DL doesnt' say LA it was $14. All people from the valley and the west side are basically screwed.) It's a little slow and gets backed up, and the group behind us joined up just because they would finish putting before we would get to tee off. but you're in venice, the weather's usually great, and the course is in pristine condition.

New favorite course. If only it wasn't so damn far from home.

Penmar, where have you been all my life??  All joking aside, this course is still a great value at a whopping $17.  My two fellow reviewers Leila T. and MIke F. say all that needs to be said about the greens and fairways.
Pretty decent for a course that gets that much play.

They always make you go 5-somes, which I think is kinda odd.  Total playing time of just under 3 hours is fairly respectable for an LA course =)

The nice ocean breezes and more-than-occasional propeller planes overhead add a bit of character to this course, which has plenty in reserve.

This is a really nice 9 hole executive golf course.  The lengths are around the same as you'd find for a par 3 or par 4 hole on an 18 hole course, though maybe a little shorter.  The fairways are a decent size, and the greens are pretty flat and straight.  It's a little more pricey than some of the other 9 holes I've played on (the green fees went up recently, from what I hear), but considering the length of the course it's not surprising.  This is my new favorite 9 hole course.

Good old Penmar, actually "Penmar By The Sea" is it's full name, even though you need a Clintonesque definition of the word "BY" as it is about a mile from the sea but anyway....

First things first. Rumour has it that this is the busiest 9 hole course in the whole U. S. of A., maybe the World!!! Minus one star.

As all golfers know, when you are getting put in a group with strangers to make up your foursome (or in this case Fivesome???) it is always a bit of a crapshoot as to the type of people you will end up playing with, and nowhere more so than here. Yesterday I played in the quintessential Penmar fivesome. I was paired with two pseudo-hipsters and two older gentlemen who both have had hip replacement surgeries. Funny thing was that the old guys moved way faster than the kids. I guess part of being a hipster is an inflated opinion of your own importance and abilities. Note to newer golfers, if you're  playing, lets say double/ triplebogie golf at best, on a very easy course, and your swing is basically crap, taking half a dozen practice swings before every shot is a Waste Of Time!!! Pay attention, get ready, and when it is your turn, Hit the F@cking Ball!! We tried to drop some subtle hints, but the kids weren't getting it.

Anyway it's a nice course and in good condition for the amount of play it gets. The greens are flat and most holes are short so you really can't play an easier course but it is no "undiscovered" gem...

Leila, I am surprised also! This is SUCH a great golf course (9 holes) and its FAR better than Rancho "I can wait 7 hours to play 18" Park. Come early and make your tee time then go grab some grub or a drink at the bar. Course is about 80% in great shape and you even get to use your driver on a few holes here. No carts, but great a great course thats well laid out for such a small area. Parking might get crowded, and if so, that should forewarn you that the course is packed. Honking is normal here as you crank up your driver so be warned. (it really doesnt make a difference in my sad game anyway~)   ;-)
