Chicago dogs walking distance from my crib, this will get dangerous. Plus they are authentic to the T. Vienna beef, Neon green relish sport peppers and all. a taste of home away from home. Boom the best style of hot dog served up here in raliegh. Hip hop hooray ho hay ho. So where is the beef? italian beef that is.

Sometimes I just crave for a dressed up hot dog and Penalty Box Dogs hits the spot every time. They have a decent topping selection, and will conveniently put everything on for you and wrap your dog up in a piece of foil so you can take it to go.
Cheap. Delicious. Sriracha!
The only downside is that I don't have a good way of finding out whether they will be there at the corner by my workplace. But it's always a nice surprise when they are.
Tip: They encourage you to call in your order if you're in a rush to avoid the line. -

Some good, some bad. The Chicago style dog was pretty darn good, with some heat in the relish, and the sport peppers. The wiener is all beef, and the best there is. All the "garden" items were fresh and crisp, the mustard solid, and the roll was nice, just not authentic. Only dog of this style that I've had in NC that was better was at Poppa's in Mooresville.
The bad. Even though it was almost 11:30, I was told the dogs weren't quite ready to take off the grill - took nearly 10 minutes to get our dogs. Even though I had ordered my two dogs first, 2 other orders (same items) were filled first - bad move. When we got back to the car (this is a hot dog cart, by the way), and opened the dogs, we found we had 2 Chicago dogs, rather than 1 Chicago, and 1 Polish Sausage - another bad move.
Good food, poor service. Running a hot dog stand should not be this difficult - Be ready to take orders on time, take the orders accurately, fill the orders accurately and in order. Too many excellent hot dog choices in the Raleigh area to tolerate poor service.
The 3 stars are for the food - as to service, they owe me a couple, at least. -
Review from Lauren R.
Walking around NYC as a kid there would always be hot dog carts. It's a staple. My first experience with Penalty Box Dogs was pleasant. They came to a catered event and the hot dogs were pretty good. The next two times (probably should have learned my lesson with the second time) were horrible. Grabbed a quick bite outside of our hotel at an event. The hot dog was so overly cooked after two bites I threw it out. Let's fast forward about 12 hours. I thought that maybe this time would be better than the last. Not exactly. The hot dog definitely tasted a lot better than the one earlier in the day, but I woke up incredibly sick a few hours after eating it. Third time was a charm. I'm done.

This place makes the best Chicago hot dogs! Hot off the grill a good char dog always hits the spot. Plus they have frequent buyer cards so you can get a free dog, which is nice for a cart.

History
Established in 2009
Lori and Darren West, owners of 'Penalty Box Dogs', bring a taste of Chicago to the corner of East Hargett and Fayetteville Streets, downtown Raleigh, with 'Chicago Style' hot dogs. This type of hot dog is served with a Vienna wiener, mustard, neon green relish, onions, tomato wedges, pickle spear, sport peppers and a dash of celery salt and on a steamed poppyseed bun. The West's decided to open up their hot dog cart after the couple were both laid off from their jobs in the construction industry. The West's attended Vienna Beef's Hot Dog University in Chicago and learned the basics of running a hotdog cart and now bring a Taste of Chicago to the City of Oaks, Raleigh, North Carolina.
Meet the Business Owner: Darren and Lori W.
In April of '09, both Lori and Darren lost their jobs in the construction industry after 10+ years at the same company. While searching online for jobs side by side, they watched a Food Network show on hot dog carts and the hot dog business. They checked out some websites and saw that there was big potential to help provide for their family. They decide to attend Vienna Beef's Hot Dog University in Chicago to learn all about the hot dog cart business. After a number of months submitting municipal paperwork and outfitting their TopDogCart, they held their Grand Opening on November 15th, 2009, which attracted many excited Chicago Dog lovers.
