The trick to the Pelton is knowing what to order. Mr. B. and I were researching local places to cater his birthday and he was massively excited to try out PSB. Reluctantly, I agreed to two nights worth of bbq and after the first meal, I was not confident there would be a second. The kal bi was gristly, even for kal bi, and had a strange sauce. Mr. B. liked the beef ribs, but thought they involved too much chewing. What surprised us both was the unexpectedly decent coleslaw and potato salad. Both were very fresh and tasty. We felt confident about the sides, not so much about the entrees. Onto the second night.

Pork ribs with mild sauce for me and smoked chicken with medium for Mr. B. Don't underestimate the fine folks at PSB--this was possibly better than E&J or Armadillo Willys. Please remember that we are in San Leandro and bereft of anything resembling authentic bbq. But honestly, I loved the pork ribs and the smoked chicken ended up getting lots of compliments at our party.

Almost 40 people chowed down on their food and took home leftovers. Couldn't beat the price, too.

Just remember to order the pork ribs or chicken...

Had a hankering for barbecue over the weekend and didn't feel like cooking, so we were about to jump into the car and head over to Everett & Jones.  But first, I had to check out what my fellow Yelp reviewers had to say about some of the local places and saw the reviews for Pelton Smoke Barbecue.  We decided to try this place out, especially since it was closer than E&J.  Boy, were we glad we did!  We enjoyed very tender beef ribs that had a nice sweetness to them and tasty Korean short ribs.  The hush puppies were ok, a little too dense for my preference, though.  The garlic green beans were off the chain and the fried okra was pretty good.  As others have noted, the portions are pretty big.  The staff was very nice and the lady at the counter was friendly.  We got a huge chunk of cornbread on the house.  Needless to say, I'll definitely make a trip back :-)

Damn good and spicy. I didn't think I'd ever find a place in the East Bay that I like as much as Big Nate's, but this is it.

Sweet and spicy with a kick that builds up as you eat. By the time you're finished, your mouth is on FIRE.

Extraordinary.

I went to try out this place today and it wasn't bad.  We order the 4-way combo: pork ribs, chicken, sliced beef and the spicy links with sides of potato salad and hush puppies. The ribs and chicken had a good smoky flavor, links were pretty good and the beef was very tender.  The new owners were very nice and helpful.  I asked about catering and she gave me a generous portion of mac and potato salad(different than the regular potato salad you get with your meal) to take home and try, she makes it special for the parties.  Over all it was
pretty good.

7/2/07 This time I ordered the korean short ribs and it was good.  I ask for rice and the garlic green beans (that was hella good).  They also had kim chee which is a hot pickle napa cabbage.  They hooked it up!

I was hesitant to try this place out since it was called Perry's Food for the Soul, expecting the recipes to be different and not to par with Perry's. To my surprise the recipes are the same: same crunchy and juicy catfish, same deep-fried cod, same pretty much everything, except for the name: Pelton Smoke Barbecue.

I don't eat meat (besides fish), so I can't comment on the barbecue, but the fried seafood's the best in the area without shelling out the big bucks for Horatio's:

- The fish burger ( two pieces of  conrmeal-crusted catfish in a bun with loads of red onions, lettuce, tomato, and mayo) is juicy and crunchy and matches well with the soft sesame seed bun.
- The cod and prawns are battered with a strong spike of garlic and goes perfectly with the tartar sauce.
- The seafood special's a steal. For $9.95 you get 2 catfish (similar in size to the catfish in the fish burger pics above), 3 prawns, and 3 pcs. of cod, with fries. It's enough to food 2 people and have leftovers.
- Seafood Hoagie's pretty good (see pic above). Chopped up fish and shrimp with bell peppers and onions, drenched in cheese.

Always closed.(now open)for now.

I have never tried so many times to check out decently reviewed BBQ place in my life.

It's always closed and even if it was open, there is no parking anywhere in sight.

I can see why it keeps on changing hands.

A word to the new owners,we can't eat there if it's always closed.

Finally ,got a chance to eat there and here is the scoop:

Decently priced lunch special with 3 meats and one side is about $8 bucks.
Links as mentioned are store bought and ,well, store bought.
Chicken was OK as were the ribs and sauce.
Decent portions for the dough.
They need to give some bread to sop up the sauce.

Not the greatest, but not the worst.

It's run by Koreans,so there is also Korean style BBQ available too (bulgogi type stuff).

Some where between 2 and 3 stars.

Adequate,but lacks character.

I wouldn't make a special trip to go here,so it appears as if Carmines is the area winner since Old South moved to the valley.

OK, I *have* had better barbecue; the chicken was tender, but a little dry, and the sauce was good but less than stellar. Portions are huge - the chirpy, friendly lady behind the counter assured us that one order was almost enough for two people and two orders would just serve three people. Ha! One order fed all three of us with enough left over for one packed lunch the next day.

And the side dishes! Decent macaroni salad, piquant coleslaw - it's pretty and I think there may be sauerkraut in it - ravishing cornbread with too many exotic flavors to be authentic Southern style - and those garlic-drenched green beans, which she insisted we take for free. The cornbread, too, was extra. Service was friendly. I'm definitely going back for more green beans.

This place is now referred to as Pelton Kickory BBQ, or someting like that...I Still call it Perry's.  This is a place I go when I'm right in that area.  The BBQ is great, and the sauces have that tangy zip that makes their flavor distinct. Prices are reasonable, too (you know BBQ ain't cheap). The place is tiny, so plan to pick it up if you don't wanna feel crammed.  I  enjoy the BBQ here, but I'm more partial to my favorite East Bay joint, OLD SOUTH BBQ.

Took Gio here for some BBQ a few weeks ago and it's no longer Perry's but the same dude still works here.  Meat is smoky and the sauce is flavorful.. For some reason, it's hit or miss with their ribs for me: half the time it's great the other half of the time it's a little too chewy.  i sometimes come here just for the hush puppies as they are oh so good.

**added 12-Feb-08:  the owners are different than the ones before.  The last time I went here the bbq was okay but not good.  Dammit, this was my last hope for BBQ in SL since I've heard that Old South moved out of the area.

Totally awesome BBQ-  It's in a funky little mall; there are only about 10 seats, so I recommend getting it for take-out.  I also recommend getting the spicy ribs.  Yummy!

To start, any BBQ place that wants to challenge for Best of the Bay Area has to have good meat and good sauce. Perry's has both. Tender, juicy ribs that are prepared with a delicious pepper rub and tangy, barbecue sauce in mild, medium or hot varieties. This place KILLS Everett and Jones in the meat/sauce departments and is worth the drive from downtown Oakland if only for this.
