What a perfect spot for a quiet sea retreat!
SK and I stayed here for our honeymoon, and were very sad to leave. The highlights:
-The room ("La Jolla"--all of the rooms are named after CA beaches) was bright, airy, and spacious
-The highly advertised featherbed was as soft and delightful as expected
-Jacuzzi tub!
-Private entrances to all the rooms--it's a B&B, but you don't feel like you're walking through someone's house
-A bowl full of mini candy bars in the room! A place after my own heart.
-Beach supplies (towels, chairs, umbrellas, even toys) are available for free guest use
-Two sweet dogs named Lucy and Ricky
-Amazing breakfasts served with a smile by the warm and friendly hostess (I feel like a real doofus because I'm blanking on her name)
-Rooftop terrace--perfect for reading over breakfast or watching the sunset
-Just a couple of blocks in from the beach--easy stroll to the shore, or to downtown Carslbad
-My mom called ahead and had champagne and (more) candy sent to our room as a surprise, and they were friendly and accommodating of her request
Suggestions:
-Don't bother trying to pick "a room with a view": there isn't much of one to be had. Some look over the back garden, which is green and nice. We picked our room because it had so many big windows, but we wound up feeling kind of exposed to the street and raising and lowering the shades all the time. The place is beautiful and comfortable, it just doesn't happen to look out on anything very interesting.
-There are rooms on the ground florr, and if stairs are a problem for you, you'll want to be sure to get one of these--no elevator here.
-Breakfast is kind of early, but so worth getting up for. Rather than staying in the parlor, we took a tray up to the terrace, out to the garden, or back to our room every day.
-Revel in the peace, quiet, and relaxation! You won't want to leave.
My husband and I just returned from our "babymoon" weekend in Carlsbad, and we had the pleasure of staying here.
My in-laws had spent a few days there a few years ago and raved about it. They liked it so much they bought us a gift certificate and we finally had the chance to use it.
The B&B is located just a couple of blocks from the beach and from downtown Carlsbad so there are loads of things to do all within walking distance. It is convenient to local attractions like the Flower Fields and Legoland, and all of San Diego as well.
The innkeeper, Nancy, is very friendly and full of great suggestions of things to see and do (and eat) in the neighborhood. She makes amazing breakfasts! We enjoyed a hashbrown and bacon quiche one morning and peach/ricotta stuffed french toast another. All soo good. You can eat in the lobby, on the roof deck or she will make you a tray for your room if you prefer. If you eat in the lobby, you might get to enjoy the company of her two sweet dogs, Ricky and Lucy, who are very well-behaved and friendly.
There are several different rooms, all a little bit different--we stayed in the Carlsbad room which has a giant captain's bed that you have to step up into. It had a featherbed which to me was not the most comfortable but I know a lot of people love them. The decor is leaning towards Victorian; in this room mostly blue and yellow--you can see pictures on their website.
Toiletries were kind of sparse (just a bar of glycerin complexion soap) so if you have certain things you like to use, bring them! I know Nancy does keep some things available for guests in the lobby if you ask, I just don't know what they are.
In all I think this is a great place to stay with great atmosphere and a great location. I would definitely go back!
I recommend the Pelican Cove Bed and Breakfast for all! I am a business traveler that stayed here a few weeks about a year and half ago. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. The candy dish in the room was definitely a treat. Did I mention the B&B is just a block off the beach? Believe me when I say this place is worth it!
Great place to stay only a block away from the beach and a little more to the village of Carlsbad. Located in quiet area with only I think 9 rooms. Nancy cooks up a mean breakfast in the morning and is a wonderful host with information on all the happenings in the area. Feather beds, fireplace, hey for a little more than the average 100 bucks a night at the 90 room motel in the area it is worth it for all the extras.
