I've been here maybe 7 or 8 times over the past 5 years. The food is really good - I'd give it 4.5 stars. The prices are a bit too high though, and the service is average, so I've rounded down to 4 stars.
The flavor and presentation are always very good for an Americanized place. The ingredients are always very fresh. The shrimp in particular is high quality here, which is a big plus.
The local retirement communities do come here for dinner, so avoid the crowds and have a later dinner (after 7).
Definitely get the Kung Pao Shrimp, and get it extra spicy :)
It was....OK. I had the San Doing chicken, which was the best thing the group had. Egg Rolls - ok....The egg drop soup has shrimp - our friend said it too was Ok...I guess the theme here is OK....I wish my chicken was a little crisper, but the sauce was good.
Our waiter had a lot tables going and he juggled them well. They gave me almond cookies on the way out - that's a plus:-)
American Chinese food - I think that is the theme here in South OC.
I've only ordered take-out so I can't write about the dining experience.
We've had some seafood fried noodles, a fish dish and some foo young thing (until this day, being Chinese, I still don't know what a foo young is). The flavor of the food is good, but too much gravy/sauce on everything. It's expensive compare to other Chinese restaurants (similar to PF Chang's?).
Best food I have ever had.
A restaurant on par with most other Chinese restaurants. Great meat dishes, high prices b/c of the fact that it's probably the only show in town of its kind. Service could be lacking at times when busy. We've only been here for dinner, so I'm guessing lunch time is a bit better in terms of attention.
It used to be really good, but the last couple of times I've noticed that the food is not the same. Too saucy and much smaller portions. I am not sure if they changed chefs or just use different ingredients.
Other than the fact that I felt like I walked into a retirement home at meal time, this place isn't too bad.
Dislikes- we were sat at an awkward round table 1/2 in a corner and 1/2 in a walkway- we all faced the wall and everyone that passed by bumped into my chair and the neighbors. The Hot and Sour soup was not prepared how it usually is at other Chinese food places- they add pork and shrimp and veggies- the rest of my group really seemed to enjoy it, but I was expecting/ looking forward to my usual.
Likes- Kung Pao Chicken and Walnut Shrimp, both were very yummy.
I would recommend this place despite my seemingly bad review. All-in-all the food was good and the service was friendly and efficient.
Went to Peking Dragon on a Tuesday night for a birthday dinner. We ordered a lot of food, so much so the server actually commented on how much we got. We ordered paper wrapped chicken and sizzling rice soup to start. For our entrees we ordered orange chicken, mongolian beef, crispy honey walnut shrimp, braised string beans, mushroom and bok choy in bleack bean sauce, bbq pork chow mein, and combo fried rice. So yeah we order a lot of food between the 4 and a half of us.
The food came out rather quickly and was piping hot. All the entrees tasted good, but my favorite was the braised string beans. Its such a simple dish but so tasty at the same time. The beans were still crisp and not over sauced.
The ambiance was nice, nothing uber fancy. The crowd that night was rather mature, if you know what I mean. I felt as if we went to eat in Laguna Woods. But that didn't bother us, we were with good company, so the crowd was a moot point.
The only down side is, this place is kind of pricey for what you get. We spent more than $30 per person. *ouch*
Would I go back? Yes.
Good chinese food in Dana Point? Impossible you say? Well, yeah kinda. But Peking Dragon is the next best thing. Fresh, quality ingredients fair sized portions. It's toned down a bit for the tennis sweater wearing locals, but delicious nonetheless.
I think the selling point though is the dining room. It's like hopping in the Delorean and having dinner with Doc Brown in 1985. All the plates and silverware are seriously worn and vintage mid80s. As is the furniture. Teal green as far as the eye can see. Which all combines to produce a strangely calming and welcoming atmosphere. It's like coming back home to a place you've never been. A perfectly preserved snapshot of fine dining, circa 1986.
Had a huge craving for peking duck and with a name like Peking Dragon, one would think they'd know how to do it... and do it right.
The restaurant requires that you order peking duck 24 hrs in advance. Cost $34.95.
If you know peking duck, you'd know that the highlight of this dish is its glossy, crispy duck skin.
It's quite labor intensive hence the prep time and the price. First, air is pumped in between the duck skin and meat so as to stretch and loosen the skin, then boiling liquid juice is repeatedly spread over the bird, which is then carefully dried, the skin is carefully rubbed or brushed with some honey-type ingredient then the duck is roasted in a hot oven for a period of time until the meat is tender and the skin crispy and roasted to the color of mahogany.
Peking Dragon's peking duck, while tasty, had soggy slivers of what we realized immediately was the skin. When I asked the waiter, he suddenly couldn't understand English. I didn't want to ruin our evening so I decided that I would just call the restaurant the next day and speak to the manager who basically acknowledged the fact that their peking duck is always served in such manner. I thought there was an oven malfunction or something! I suggested that their menu is misleading and they should call it something other than Peking nor should it be called Roasted because it seemed to have been steamed or maybe even grilled since the skin had a charred flavor.
We had several other dishes: potstickers, pork spare ribs, house pan fried noodles, mongolian beef and spicy eggplant. They were tasty but I wouldn't go as far as delicious... just ok. If it weren't for these dishes, I'd rate this place 1/2 a star since the peking duck was the primary reason for our visit.
What a disappointment. I haven't had awesome peking duck in such a loOoOong time. Help... if you know of a good place in OC, pls share the wealth.
My husband and I have gone to Peking Dragon many times. My husbands family would go there every week. When he was little. Our favorites dishes are the walnut shrimp and the sizzling soup, very fun! But the only thing is that a few times we have gone their the waiter has been very rude! I must say that it surprises me. Once they gave us our check way too early! But last night we took my parents for the 1st time and they really like it! We had a fun time.
I stumbled into the Peking Dragon last week and was pleasantly surprised. The food is moderately priced and the portions were quite nice...really, we probably could have shared a single plate of food. o.o
The restaurant was very clean from what I saw and the staff was very friendly. Something else worth mentioning: The egg rolls were delicious! They aren't 'traditional' egg rolls, but they are pretty damn close.
While there we ate: Egg Fu Yung, Szechwan beef and vegetables over rice, and egg rolls. Delicious. :D
The food was quite good and it surprised me because I had heard bad things about this place. The curried beef was good but it wasn't amazing.
What a great find, thanks to Yelpers. Not familiar with Dana Point and since we were meeting friends for dinner, wanted to find a place which was affordable and not fancy. The place was packed, but we know why. The food was delicious and affordable for 5 of us. We had the Sweet and Sour Chicken, this was really good. Alot of times, Chinese restaurants put too much batter on the chicken, which drowns with sauce and becomes saugy. The Sweet and Sour stayed crisp and tender in the inside. Yumm....
Very friendly and fast service!
It seems like they've been in Dana Point forever and they've actually gotten better. Our last meal there had a very good mushu pork and the black peppercorn beef that was the special of the night. That along with the Tsingtaos made it even better. Glad to see the place had a full crowd as they've always been friendly.
This place is always sparkling clean. The family is always, always working.
It's a pretty large place and is always busy, even late. Their takeout is super-fast.
I highly recommend the Szechuan Chicken. Soooo good. I never get that salt-bomb feeling after eating here like I have at nearly every other Chinese restaurant to which I have ever been. Everything tastes very healthy. The wonton soup is great, the shrimp dishes are very good.
You just can't go wrong here. I am so glad to have found this place.
how many times have you heard......"In North America, Chinese restaurants range from the fairly authentic restaurants to the standard take-out. Note that I said fairly authentic. I emphasize this because you would be very hard pressed to find a TRULY authentic chinese restaurant in north america" blah blah blah blah lo que sea!! the truth is that Peking Dragon had great food, Yes everybody in Dana Point knows this. what you never hear about is the side orders. And no im not talking about the egg rolls. what im talking about people is the fried chicken side dish. I asked the owner what the secret to the fried chicken was and he smiled politely then said nice try. I dont know where to begin but this stuff blows the Kernel, loco pollo and home recipes passed on from generation to generqation away. i really dont know how to describe it so im adding a photo. so if you ever find yourself at the Peking Dragon make sure to ask for the fried chicken!!!
Great Chinese for a beach city. Family owned spot and easy parking. standards are great. some of the spicy items aren't as spicy as I would like. but overall a great place to go to if you are in the area. and if you drove a half hour to get there and then drove back after dinner you sounds like a personalproblem you need to work on your time management skills and make better plans.... next time if you drive a half an hour to get to Dana point then you should probably enjoy the scenery and eat at Harpoon Henry's or Wind n Sea patio dining or Chart House, maybe even the Ritz at happy hour makes it worth the drive if you stay and enjoy the area.
i grew up eating here with my family, mostly with my mom for lunch. you can't beat the lunch special and it is so much food. the egg flower soup is super tasty and they serve you fried chicken with the meal too. it's not your typical fried chicken so don't get scared. the entrees are all good but my favorite in the mandarin prawns or the garlic fried chicken.
Wow, this place sure cranks out some chinese! I went this past Saturday at 7pm...the place was packed. People coming in, people going out...like a well-oiled machine. The service was pretty good...took a while for us to get out tea, but whatever.
The portions are a good size...great Crispy Walnut Shrimp, tasty Mongolian Beef and Szechuan Hot Fried Chicken.
Too bad for Dana Point that there isn't a better selection of Chinese restaurants...but Peking Dragon is just fine.
I went here last night for the first time. My friend made the reccomendation, then I checked the reviews on Yelp. TOTALLY awesome food! Super yummy. No MSG is used and it didn't make me feel super heavy like most places. I also didn't find myself hungry again an hour later. I would give this place 10 stars. A little pricey for Chinese food, but worth it! The sizzling rice soup here was PERFECT, which is one of my favorites; some places some how mess up this soup. We also ordered the mu shu shrimp and veggie lowmein. Both very very yummy!! It was pretty busy, but we were seated in less than 10 mins. Ohhhh and they have a good selection for the lunch menu.
My parents have been taking me to Peking Dragon since I was a baby. The prices have increased over the years, yet they consistently serve quality and delicious food.
mandarin prawn = pure ecstasy.
Peking Dragon offers up good Chinese food. The sauces are varied and delicious and the meats are cooked nicely. The prices are reasonable and the service is decent.
i felt the place was completely overrated. the chow mein was ok. except for the only things in it i actually recognized was the shrimp and peas. i'm not really sure what all that other flavorless stuff mixed in with the noodles was. and the mu-shoo (sp?) beef was, well, lacking in beef. or maybe thats what those little gray pieces were... totally not worth the half hour drive i had to take to get there. although being nauseous the whole way back was a much worse drive. definitely won't be going back here again.
I won't eat Chinese anywhere else around here. It is very busy, but for good reason. We just do takeout, which is lightning-fast and always spot on. Lemon Shrimp is wonderful, as is sizzling rice soup, garlic fried chicken and snow white chicken. Skip the egg rolls, I have given them 2 chances and they taste funny.
Very good family-style Chinese food. The atmosphere is bright and casual and the menu is extensive, too the point of being daunting, but the food is all fresh and very, very good. It's always crowded, but there isn't much of a wait. There's nothing too exotic, but what it lacks in adventure, it makes up for in quality and service.
