Review from Rachel H.
Good family- friendly option for having a pint right by the water in Bainbridge.
Pegasus is more than a coffee house, and has an extensive lunch (salads, paninis) menu. Its apparently a sister location to the Harbour Public House, just down the way. Both places have lots of character, history and are blessed with a great location right on Winslow Marina.
The atmosphere inside too would make Pegasus a great stop on a grey day: a rough hewn table, fireplace, old fashioned cash register, white planked walls, and a w.c. instead of a bathroom. Lucky for us, we had a rare and glorious day of sun, but it was still brisk out (50s) and so the heat lamps were lightly running to make this a perfect early spring outing.
Good service experience, despite being mostly self service.
A nice, relaxed afternoon stop. -
Review from Jason R.
This was the best coffee I had in my short, spatially limited trip to the Seattle area. The Sulawesi they served drip still had its bite. That's enough to end the coffee review, and it's very positive.
The atmosphere made me weep for its lack back at home. Swing-out seats in one portion, a hand-written menu rolled down the wall, and a mix of tourists (us) and regulars (them). The place *felt* warm. The fact that it was cold and raining outside may have helped. -
Review from Dana R.
Best coffee on the island (but not as good as Umbria, Zeitgeist or Uptown in Seattle). Neat atmosphere and has an outdoor patio. With the exception of the community table with swing out small wood disk seats, the seating is comfortable.
Unfortunately, other than the plain croissants, the food has fallen short on most occasions. The plain croissants are light and airy on the inside and crispy, crispy on the outside -- perfect with the raspberry jam (wish they'd offer strawberry freezer jam). The almond croissants are flat, flacid and too sweet for my taste. The other baked goods I've tried are so so ... the scones and cookies have been a little dry for my liking.
One morning I had a delicious savory dutch baby for breakfast -- it was made with rice with dried apricots and nuts (left over from the night before) and fresh scallions and eggs. Great texture on the dutch baby (crispy bottom and edges) and flavorful filling. I was told they very rarely make this dish ... and it differs based on what's left over ...
We ate breakfast here with friends this morning. One friend ordered "Poached Eggs on Toast" -- "on" being the operative word ... it came out with 2 poached eggs in a bowl, 1 piece of dry toast sliced into 2 pieces, a pat of butter and raspberry jam. Nothing put together and no "sauce" for the eggs ... if you're to put the eggs "on" the toast, what are you to do with the jam? Or, are you to put the jam on the toast and eat the eggs alone? Very odd ... and the eggs were so over-poached that the yolks were crumbly.
Another friend had one of the daily specials: two eggs your way (she chose poached), potatoes O'Brien (described by our server as having cheese) and bacon. Her bacon was undercooked, her eggs were as over-poached as my other friend's (above). And, there was no cheese (when we asked for some it took so long for it to come that we had nearly finished our meal). The potatoes were sauteed with red peppers and onions and had no texture (crispiness). The entire dish also lacked seasoning.
I had the same daily special eggs your way dish but with eggs fried medium and crispy bacon. My eggs and bacon were well-prepared. My potatoes were also texturally unappealing and lacked seasoning (as did the eggs).
My husband had the eggs benedict -- two poached eggs (also over-poached) on under-toasted english muffins with rosemary ham and a basil pecan pesto cream. He thought it was good but not great ... he agreed that the dish would have been much better with softer poached eggs, crispier muffins and a traditional lemony hollandaise with basil oil (along with the ham they served).
The food service was very slow and inattentive today. There were few other tables with food orders, yet it took more than 25 minutes from the time we ordered for our food to be delivered ... for about 5 minutes of that time our food was sitting on the counter waiting for delivery while our server walked by and looked at it at least 5 times (so the food wasn't real warm when it made it to us).
It's a good place to grab a cup of coffee or a latte. I just wish Hitchcock would open at 10 am (or earlier) on Saturdays and Sundays (instead of noon). -

We swung by here later at night, around 8:30 pm, and this place was pretty busy! It was freezing out, so we decided to warm up with some chai tea. When we first entered the coffee house we were thrown off because in addition to being a coffee house, it is also a bar. We thought that was a cool combination. The barista/bartender was really friendly. She told us that many people like to add a splash of liquor to their coffee....nice, if I wasn't driving I would have definitely tried that! Anyway, our two chai tea's to go were really good. Perfect mix of sweet and spicy. They had a lot of pastries to choose from that looked great (we had just eaten a huge dinner, so passed on these), we look forward to returning and trying some of them, though.

Stopped here for some breakfast. It's a cute spot, with a nice ambiance. A bit busy as I guess is always the case at the weekends, but we sat at the bar right away. I had baked eggs, my husband had the grilled breakfast sandwich. Both were delicious. The baked eggs are kind of like a souffle and you can have them a variety of different ways - choose your meat (or spinach for me) and your cheese.
The furniture is very funky, with one of the most unusual tables I have seen that looks like it came from an old manufacturing line, with swing out stools.
it had an outside patio, which some hardy people sat at, as someone used to Southern California, it would need to have been considerably warmer for me to have sat there.
It's in a nice spot, you can take a walk along the harbor from there, to work off your baked eggs. -

Just alright. I would try it again when in the area, and if I were a local, this would be my regular hangout for lack of other, more satisfying options.
Cute building, and nice outdoor patio. I ordered a latte, which was good, and sat outside. The waitress serving never asked after me, though I likely would have ordered something from her if she had. They were short staffed, though the girls were friendly.
They seem to have a full bar, too. Perhaps an afternoon libation is worth a try? I overheard others around me review the food as mediocre. They do offer organic coffees, with is lovely! And would have me back, if nothing else.
Cool joint. Room for improvement, too. -

Came here for breakfast as it was near by hotel. Five stars for the food, one (or zero rather) for service.
Pros: Great menu if you're looking for s break from the standard pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I ordered baked eggs which is similar to a souffle. Delicious!! If you want great food that you DIDN'T order, come here!!!
Cons: Bad service!! I was only approached by our server twice: once to place the order and last time to pay. My entire party's order was wrong. I asked for spinach in my baked eggs - nope, didn't get it. My brother wanted bacon in his sandwich - not there. My fiance ordered cheddar in his meal - not there either. If we weren't in a rush to head over to Seattle and if the food weren't so delicious as is, we would have complained. -

very poor quality, slow service, and expensive! for the same price i could have gone to starbucks. sure, i would lose out on that cozy coffeehouse experience, but my drip coffee would not taste charred, my chai would not taste like water with a powdery mix, and it wouldn't take 12 minutes to toast a damn bagel and throw a packet of cream cheese into the bag! i almost missed the ferry, and regretted every penny once it was cool enough to taste. the staff seemed very friendly, but management needs to hire baristas, not nice kids who smile at me while they hand me cups of crap. i seriously do NOT recommend this place for anything other than the ambience.

I had read about this in a NW travel book - otherwise, we wouldn't have ended up here - its a bit off the main path.
Great interior - wide windows, wooden floor, lots of seating. And definitely embracing the slower pace of life on the island....much slower.
We tried the drink of the day the barista recommended - cinnamon latte. Which was pretty good, as was the chai. Just waiting 10 minutes for my coffee when there were only a few other people there - with no apology, wasn't too impressive.
Other than that, I thought it was cool they served beer and food. -

Been here twice on day excursions from Seattle, during very different seasons.
Coffee both times: Excellent. My wife's breve was very warm--which she likes but usually doesn't get elsewhere. My dark coffee was delish.
Older ivy-covered stone building. Cozy, warm interior with a comfortable, almost quaint patina.
VISIT 1 - WINTER
Visited for coffee in winter on weekday as a couple. Wet, overcast day. Had read about Pegasus in the Seattle Times, so walked here and had coffee and pastry.
Atmosphere wonderful on a dreary wet day. We sat at the couch next to the window by the fireplace and enjoyed the coffee.
VISIT 2 - SUMMER
Visited with 4 teenagers (3 girls) in Aug, during Seafair, on a weekend. Bainbridge was sunny and crowded.
Teens couldn't decide on restaurant, but finally went off by themselves to Pegasus. The wife and I arrived later for coffee.
The teens enjoyed their food mostly. Our vegetarian daughter didn't like her kale fried with cheese, so gave it to my wife and I--it was very nice tasting!
We stayed inside, but the outdoor patio was open and looked inviting.
Though we didn't notice it during our first visit, there is a small bar with stools and a brass rail where one can have a draft beer. -

I've been coming here since my Cousin moved on the island. It's the kind of place that reminds me of the Bay Area scene, old building with a funky interior that resembles half coffee shop half bar. I was told the owners own another bar and therefore the mix. I have never come to drink the microbrews on tap but I have had the coffee and breakfast. Coffee is more robust than most places, kinda like Peet's style if you have been there before. The people who work here are really friendly and are always refilling your cup when they pass. I noticed there are tons of regulars because every time someone would go to the counter one of the employees would say something like, "So are you getting the regular, how's so and so...etc". Nice to have that kind of place to go to in this modern virtual reality paradigm we are in. Anyway breakfast is limited and I would not call it blow away but it works. I get the eggs with toast and get peppers on top and it's good if you are looking for something quick. Recommend telling them "extra over-easy!". Overall a fun place to drop by when you are on the island and tired of Blackbird Bakery which is good but has no sit down seating.

I had a friend in town recently and we decided to give this place a try after reading a few lukewarm reviews for other places in town.
I enjoyed my experience here--the staff were friendly and attentive and the food was really good. I wouldn't say there was anything negative about my experience but the reason I only give 3 stars is because I wasn't particularly inspired either. For someone who is just in Bainbridge for a day however, I would say to give this place a shot. I enjoyed it enough to recommend it.
Be aware though that the seating is not necessarily designed for coziness and comfort. It's pretty perfunctory. I mention this because often times if I'm been on my feet all day, I like a cozy booth to sit in and there isn't really anything such as that offered here. -

Dear Pegasus Employees that "took care" of me:
I'm going to assume that you receive a paycheck from the owners of this establishment. I'm also going to assume that these owners expect that in exchange for the said compensation that you will provide their customers a modicum of civility and at least two facial expressions.
If you weren't aware of these expectations - I'll help you out a little:
1.) When a customer walks in - greet them with a level of politeness that makes them feel they and their money are welcome. A smile is a good start.
2.) When they ask you a question, at least pretend you know what products you have to offer. Maybe come in a couple of minutes early and look around the place.
3.) When you finish making their coffee - hand it to them with pride - after all - you did make it. Possibly say something like - "Here ya' go - hope you enjoy it!."
4.) When your customer says thanks and take care - acknowledge it.
Maybe, oh I don't know, something like - "you're welcome, see ya"
I hope these few things help you out little. It's tough, dealing with other human beings, I know. But, it happens and you should really learn how to deal with it.
Take care! -

After more walking we stopped in for a cup of Joe. The staff were really fun and even got my weak attempt at a Joke as there coffee prices are going up Tuesday Sept 13th and we visited on the 12th !!!!!
The House Blend was really flavorful so we got half a pound for the rest of our vacation stay. They had a really good selection of coffees from around the world and although we did not eat (at least 8 other people were) the food selection looked interesting and varied. -

Bainbridge Island, WA
The new-ish owners just remodeled the interior and have decided to move the old place up the scale. It's now a sit down bistro kind of joint. They still serve coffee and espresso, but now they have table service and a yuppified menu.
I like the remodel. It opened the place up. However, it lost some of the scruffy charm too. It's not a cafe anymore. It's a restaurant.
The two times I've been there after the remodel, it has been free of the old timers, live-aboards, and students that used to inhabit the old Pegasus. I think with time folks will get used to it. They serve beer and wine now, so it seems to be changing in a positive direction. And let's face it, the customer service of the old place was nothing to write home about. It sucked usually.
But I'm not someone who likes to see old places gentrified. Bainbridge Island is stuffy and boring enough without any help. So I'm going to lop off a star.
The coffee is still pretty good.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Since the Change of ownership, this place has become a frequent haunt of mine. I used to go into Pegasus and expect some 20 year old Hippie givin' be attitude. Now, I go in, get a smile and a cup of coffee and get some sort of breakfast treat (from scones to baked eggs) that gets me on my feet. I LOVE Pegasus. The employees are friendly, and the Chefs are fantastic. I love Fava beans and imagine my happiness when I found them on the menu....in a special salad....for $7.95! I go in frequently just to see what they are up to in the kitchen. The pastries and the specials are worth a look.
The WiFi can be a bit sketchy....which is why I am not giving 5-stars...it seems petty, but I can make coffee and breakfast at home....if I am going out, I want to be able to have a consistent means of communication....I know....I'm a dork! -

Everett, WA
Excellent coffee and service is mostly warm and friendly. We've been there for early morning breakfast on several occasions but have decided that we won't be eating here any more. The price of these breakfast items is off the chart in terms of high expense for the size of the portions - which are extremely small. You will mostly leave hungry.
So............it's only coffee from now on.
And if you go when there are quite a few people in here - this place is extremely noisy. -

Very cool building, excellent pastries, but the coffee didn't do it for me. I like Cafe Vida, Vivace and Uptown Espresso. If you do too, I'd skip the coffee. Still a place worth checking out, lots of interesting events are held there.

Such an improved atmosphere since the remodel. Lighter and more open, and a notable to improvement in staff friendliness and warmth. The coffee is always good, the food is tasty and the menu changes to reflect the owners flare for something different and exciting. Nestled at the edge of the marina, if its warm and there is no room inside to sit, head down to the marina and sit at the picnic table there and just soak up Classic Bainbridge Island!

Waited 15 minutes at a table and was never acknowledged by waitress. It was not busy, it was 10:30 on a Thursday and there are only 10 tables in the room. Finally went up to the counter to get a menu and the counter person said to grab a table and we can serve you. Waited 10 minutes more and walked out to Streamliner Diner with never been approached by a waitress.. Within minutes I had a menu, coffee and water and they completely busy (I sat at a counter). No excuse for bad, bad service.

Bainbridge Island, WA
Since my original review, the new owners have seriously made over the place and as much as I liked the prior frayed-around-the-edges ambiance, the new Pegasus is fabulous. In particular, the food is phenomenal - earlier today I had a roast pork sandwich that was fall-over good: whole wheat sourdough, cherry chutney/relish ... unbelievable. If you're visiting Bainbridge and looking for a lunch spot, please please look past the tourist magnet next door at the corner of Madison & Parfitt and walk next door to Pegasus. You won't be disappointed.

The interior is comfy and lowkey--I like it. That said, the service was abysmal. Two waitresses doing absolutely nothing just stared at me. In the meantime, four people that one of the waitresses seemed to know walked in, and got immediately seating, menus, and service. I finally walked up to the counter to get my own menu.
I won't be back, which is a drag, as the street it's on is pretty, and the place itself is, as I said, comfy and lowkey. -

We were pleased by the friendly help, despite warnings from previous yelpers. Great selection of teas for non-coffee drinkers like me. I must say I had the best chocolate cookies of my life. Warm, gooey and wonderfully thick. Loved sections of newspapers available for free and the unique, fun seating. Great environment to chat with friends and kid-friendly to boot.

I live on Bainbridge and I have a new favorite lunch dish in town-- and it's so good I'm going to draw it out until I say what it is- because it is so mouthwateringly delicious, creamy and satisfying that adding anticipation like I am doing with this incredibly long run on sentence that keeps going and going and going will give you an idea of a small percentage of how long the goodness lasts after you taste one bite of it! OK. Eggs Florentine. EGGS FLORENTINE!!!! I've never had this dish before, and it may not be the "traditional" presentation, according to my BF, but I could care less about that and care mostly for the delicious flavor, mouthwatering, delectable, satisfying, soothing, nurturing, YUMMY!! My boyfriend and I came in for brunch on a week-day- he ordered the aforementioned godsend, I ordered a tuna salad, and the tuna salad was wonderful, huge, satisfying, etc but once I had a bite of the Eggs it was like I'd found mmmmmmmm heaven. Are you getting the picture? And yes, tuna (albacore) salad fans will not be disappointed either. Hey it doesn't end here-- I also got a cappuccino (decaf) that now stands at the top of my list as well. I don't drink coffee very much- maybe once a month- but I may become a more frequent imbiber. And did I mention that the service was excellent, friendly and sweet and the atmosphere relaxing and upbeat? A wonderful place for lunch/brunch on a romantic staycation. Can't wait to go back.

I really like Pagasus's, and I like the change with the new owners. Julie who has been there for years is one of the nicest people and she works in the morning, great service.
My only complaint is a man who comes in often who thinks this is his personal office to interview people. It has happened on several occasion my husband and I go in for a coffee and there he sits, most times he is only having a glass of free water, no one says anything to him and he has a loud voice and has his computer working to interview men for his company. I think he should use his own office and be asked to leave.
But putting that aside you will find an old time Bainbridge coffee shop. -

Hands down the best mocha and hot chocolate I've ever had. This place was a short walk from downtown on the island, and worth it. Can't wait to find a reason to visit Bainbridge again and get a couple more drinks! I've been to the downtown Seattle stop as well, and they're equally delicous. Chai Eggnog Lattes at Christmas can't be beat.

Been here a couple of times over the past year and really enjoy the food, the ambiance and the location. Only thing to find fault with is the odd and pretty uncomfortable seating in a couple of spots. Also I don't get why they have German beer on tap. This is Seattle, one of the greatest beer towns in the country, so they should be able to find something better than Traumer Pils. Weird. Especially considering they have a great wine list of local (and some imported) wines.
