I have a love-hate relationship with this location. In short: I go here often (at least twice a week when I am in town) because of the location and the drinks are usually very good, but I have a real problem with the way it is set up, the feel of the place and the staff. Like I said, there are loves and hates...
Loves: Peet's coffee, the fact that they are true to their heritage and still have a full tea selection, the straightforward nature of their stores without a ton of extra cds and crap all over (more like Starbucks used to be back in the day), the real machines, the care the baristas (usually) take in creating velvety foam, their soy, Jasmine Tea coolers, Vanilla Freddos, the fact that they do not lid the drinks, and of course the Greenlake location.
Dislikes: the wasted space, design of the store, and poor seating configuration, having to ask for a code for two hours of internet, pasty selection that doesn't live up to the quality of the coffee, and the fact that most people working there look sloppy and unkempt... really unkempt at times.
People who are not transplants to Seattle or who have been here awhile may remember that this store is in the location of an old Seattle's Best Coffee. It's bittersweet for me because that SBC was my favorite for years - it had a stellar staff, an awesome seating configuration, a fireplace (for awhile), and a very relaxed Greenlake vibe. It is harder for me to like this Peet's because it is so poorly set up and sterile in comparison to the SBC it replaced. But all that being said, if you don't remember that store or don't care and just want to pop in for a quality coffee after your lake run or walk, this is your place.
Oh, parking is a real pain. The Lake is a busy place and there's not always street parking. It's best if you just walk over after you walk the lake or whatever. DO NOT park in the adjoining Spud's lot unless you pay because you may very well get a ticket. They watch the lot very closely. Peet's has a sign up to warn people. I've parked there for a few minutes just to run in and ended up with a ticket.
another bad experience
I withdrew my first review because it was not fair to hold a grudge against the entire place because a manager messed up and then yelled at me about it.
BUT since it was about my applying for a job... then when I go in the staff is not friendly or well-groomed..... well.. they got the job.
Today I got a dull stare.. hullo.. no spark I almost thought someone threw their voice .. there was no expression on the face of the order taker.
HMMM spend money and spend time with a dull dead ..hullo.. or go somewhere else where I might hear a friendly hi how are you ? or even a hello.. I actually passed up a Starbucks to come back and give this one a try.
Instead of the usual jog around Green Lake, we decided to pick up some hot chocolate from Peet's and walk around the lake.
It's hard to judge the quality of Peet's cocoa (their coffee is the best though!). Maybe it should just be ordered with 2% or whole milk, because our cocoas with skim milk couldn't hold a candle to the Swiss Miss we used to whip up on backpacking trips.
Not sure why they ask your name when they take your order. There might just be some miscreant chick at the take-out counter who won't call out the names attached to orders. If you see what looks like your order you have to ask her if what is sitting there is your order. She'll mutter something to the fact that it is indeed your order. Nice!
Everybody was at Green Lake today it seemed, even the guy offering Spanish lessons!
I made my sister take me here for my daily dose of Peet's (some things you just can't leave behind...). I was hoping I'd like this location more.
Their location on Green Lake is awesome. That's where the awesomeness stopped. I always get the same thing at each Peet's. My drink tasted pretty funky here. The service? Seemingly feigned politeness. Just because the weather was dreary didn't mean their service had to be, too.
The ambiance was...weird. The place was full, but all you could hear was their classical music. No one was talking! Totally made my sister & me uncomfortable. I guess great for studying, not so great for socializing.
I love Peet's Coffee, and have never had a bad Peet's experience in CA. Maybe the Seattle locations just need a little more time to figure things out.
*puzzled*
I had a weird experience here today. I went in for coffee and something to munch on for breakfast, plus to sit for a while and do some computer manipulations. The girl who took my order was struggling a bit, not very friendly, was confused when I asked to pay for a coffee refill up-front, and initially forgot to ring up the bagel I also ordered. When we finally figured that part out, I went to sit down, start up my computer, doctor up my coffee the way I like it, and wait for the delicious bagel to pop forth from the toaster. "Oh, Mr. Bagel," I said to myself, "I'm gonna eat the #!@* out of you!"
Five minutes later, still no mention of the bagel. It had gotten busy so I sidled up to the bar, hoping my hungry face would jog their memory. No such luck. So I timidly asked the girl who was making drinks if there was a bagel ready, and she asked the girl who had taken my order. Blank stare. "Bagel?" Order-taker looked around, trying to remember who had ordered what. When she saw me, I kind of waved and she had an 'oh yeah' look cross her face. She apologized, I said no problem, just happy that I was about to eat. Except all she did was put a bagel on a plate and hand it to me. Not sliced, not toasted, no butter or anything. Thanks. That looks appetizing!
I'm the last person who would complain, plus they were slammed anyway, so I just took the bagel back to my table. I stared at it for a minute. It stared back at me as if to say, "Now what are you going to do with me?" Good question, bagel. I half-heartedly sliced it but couldn't even bring it to my lips. Finally I just packed up and went home, forfeiting my right to the refill I'd paid for, to toast and spread Delicious Things on Mr. Bagel to my heart's content. And then I ate the *@!# out of it.
*sigh* I know, I should have said something. But I don't feel like I should have to work that hard so early in the morning.
Great coffee, and a tea menu. Cool!
The bad news is that they don't do wireless at all. Can't even pay for it.
This is acceptable, and there are more intently reading customers than at most places. Since free wireless is the rule rather than the exception (and I walked in expecting wireless), it should be noted.
This may be the most high-performance Peet's Coffee in the Universe.
This place is always full of lake-goers and they want their coffee damn fast.
You might forget that you are in passive Seattle witnessing the carnage of under-caffeinated people here.
This used to be Seattle's Best. Remember those? They had awesome milkshakes...
Anyway, this is a great location, right on Greenlake. Good for people watching. Lots of chairs/tables for reading, lounging, chatting. It gets very crowded on weekend mornings. There was a line out the door today, but it moved quickly. I overheard a couple of blind dates while I was there, so it's probably a common place for people to meet for the first time.
I never order fancy drinks here, it's always a drip or iced drip for me. I like that their sizes are small, medium and large. Simple is good.
Personally, I love the taste of their coffee. I buy their beans and make it at home. I'm sad the Peet's at Oak Tree is no more, but this place is worth the trip, especially on a nice day.
The Superior Coffee:
Those of you from California know Peet's Coffee well. My wife and I used to be unshakable customers of a certain famous Seattle coffee company (We'll call them Sawdust Coffee) until we tried Peet's for the first time and let me tell you, we forgot all about Star...I mean Sawdust. Peet's is truly superior coffee and the baristas at the Peet's are simply the very best. If you go there, ask for a single or a double Phil (My special made latte). They'll know what and who you're talking about. We've not found nicer, more down-home people who actually like their jobs and show it, than at Peet's. If you like the taste of wet paper and burnt milk, go to Sawdust but if you like the taste of excellent coffee with good quality milk, definitely, go to Peet's. Hey, they're even cheaper than Sta...I mean Sawdust. You'll be devoted Peet's converts like us.
Note: Since my original review of the Peet's at Larry's market at Oak Tree, That Larry's (In fact all Larry's markets) closed and all of the baristas for the Oak Tree kiosk are now at the Greenlake Peet's Coffee & Tea store.
The first time I tried Peet's, it was late at night, towards closing. I figured this was the reason that the coffee was so sour tasting - I had just been unlucky.
However, after a second trip earlier in the day, and still getting sour coffee, I would really not recommend Peet's.
The place is cute and quiet, and if I were only going for some tea and to read a book, I might consider it...
But there is simply no reason to order coffee from here - especially not with so many better places within a block or two.
I love to visit Peet's on Green Lake. The view is great, the staff is super nice, and they offer free wi-fi to customers. Their hot cocoa is to die for on a cold day, as well!
I haven't even tried the teas yet! I had some coffee here and the thing that grabbed me other than being nicely located off of Green Lake, was the prices. Lattes under $3 and coffee under $2 in relation to the places I've been to so far in my short time here. It was tasty and it is a nice looking establishment.
I know, I know, I'm not supposed to patronize chain coffee places. But Peet's was about a block from a place I used to live, and honestly employees were nicer at Peet's than my experiences at the closer, local coffee place. So pfft!
I adore Peet's on Green Lake. Weekends, forget it -- the Green Lake walking/running/biking/soccer parent crowd is out of control. But the weeknights are quiet and ridiculously comforting. With all the walls entirely glass, this place boasts a really, really nice view of Green Lake. The low lighting and small cozy space and the tendency to play classical was actually ridiculously comforting. I've been known to spend several hours there on a random weeknight. And, the coffee is good. So there's that!
*Always* friendly barristas. Coffee is good. Chocolate not so good. Carmel is wonderful. Chairs aren't comfortable, but aside from that I love the space. The noise is people noise not loud music than some will love and some, usually me, will loathe.
I adore Peet's coffee!! I feel that it's definitely the best coffee in town. The raspberry mocha, which they recommend, is divine. Baristas are friendly and nice as well. It's much quieter and more relaxing than a lot of other coffee joints - a little over half of the crowed appeared to be students at work. Love this place.
I'm giving it five stars because my awesome friend and former college roommate works here. Yeah! I have never actually had Peet's coffee (I brew at home or patronize local shops), but I had iced tea here the other day, and it was refreshing. Refreshing is what's needed when you just walked around Green Lake in jeans in the sunny, mid-day heat. The shop seems very cozy and it attracts a variety of customers.
