Out of all the coffee places (and god help us, for a small town Scotts Valley has  quite a few), Peets probably has the most consistently high quality and good strong coffee of the bunch.  Its a good place to chill after shopping in SV or while waiting for someone, or just for a morning pick me up.

The only reason I don't give this location 4 or 5 stars is that the service can be hit and miss at times.  I have had great friendly service and then gone in during another shift and had the "oh I'm waiting for my big break as a) writer b)activist c)performance artist and therefore I am lowering my hip standards to wait on you".  Its a real crap shoot to what you get in there.

Great place to work with free wi-fi and good, strong coffee. There are also chairs for sitting outside, though the traffic is too near and too loud  for my tastes. There's some good, comfy, cushioned seating inside as well as tables. It can get pretty crowded because it's a small space. You always seem to meet new people because of the proximity.

I have to say that I had two of the worst drinks ever here, a Mocha and a Gingerbread something or other. I wouldn't recommend Peet's for that. I don't drink those specialties drinks too much and prefer extra dark, black coffee. The Sumatra rocks. And I do like the green teas. They are excellent. And the staff is always very pleasant!

Friendly service, good coffee, free WiFi. It's not too much different from other Peets and sometimes you just want to go somewhere with no surprises.

Good place to stop if you're nearby.

Since Starbucks decided to ex-nay their sugar free mocha (bastards) thank god someone picked up the slack! I went in yesterday and got strong sugar free soy mocha with no whip. Downside-- it was not as hot as usual (note to self ask for it X-Hot next time). But overall did its job. What I love about this store is that it gets really sunny inside and it sparkles (they keep it very clean as opposed to others in the area *cough Santa Cruz*)... and there is a bathroom.  Most importantly other than beverage consistency their customer service is stellar.. if someone is busy with a customer someone else picks up where they left off with drink orders and they automatically help each other at the bar....

Anything new or different in the tiny burg of Scotts Valley is exciting. The town was abuzz with the news that Abouche was being replaced by Peet's! The only other games in town are Coffee Cat farther down the street and the two Starbucks, including one almost right across the street from Peets. SHOWDOWN!

Yes, this is as interesting as it gets here in S'Valley.

What can you really say about Peets versus S'bucks? I've never been sure why people think S'bucks is an evil corporate behemoth and Peet's isn't. It kind of reminds me of a high school clique - the preppy girls with their super-straight blond hair go to S'bucks and the morose clove-smokers go to Peet's.

I like the baked goods selection better at Peet's than Starbucks. The shiny new-ness of Peet's is pleasing and I feel like their staff are a little more genuine. Plus, they have less of the sugary drinks so hopefully the Peets won't be saturated with the middle schoolers in the afternoon the way the S'bucks is. Apart from that, if you've been to a Peet's, you pretty much know what to expect.

I drive up to Scotts Valley just about every day to visit Peets.
Folks are very friendly and the double-espresso is always made right.

    I love their dark-roasted beans.
    baked goods are delicious.......

and no scuzzy customers (like downtown SCZ coffee places)

    this place is the best!

Update: Adding a star, the espresso has improved to at least as good as neighboring competition. My kids tell me their Freddo's are consistent with the Santa Cruz and SJ Peets.  I'm sorry Peets dropped one of my favorite whole bean roasts (Sierra Dorada), but that isn't the fault of this particular Peets.  Garuda for espresso is still without peer after many years.  The staff is top-notch, always friendly. Now about that wifi....

    [Original Post follows]
I really like Peets.  No, I mean, really. I've been buying Peets coffee since 1980 by the cup and by the pound. I still go many times a week to the Cambrian or the downtown San Jose or Willow Glen SJ stores, and I can't pass by the Pacific Avenue store on Saturday w/o getting my double espresso.

I say all that so you know I'm not a hater, because it pains me to say that there's something off at this Peets. The staff is trained well, and friendly (they remembered my name after just the first visit), and the beans are all to the usual exemplary standard, but the product from the bar is just not up to Peets usual, and well-below that of  the nearby competition. The Santa Cruz Roasting Co espresso from Joe on the Go and the Coffee Cat espresso across the street are both far superior. Its not even as good as Surf City, who really don't know what they're doing.

I first thought the new machine at Peets just needed "burning in" when the store opened ( I was there on the first day,--twice!), but it just hasn't been any better when I've returned over the weeks, and now, months. Maybe the ghosts of Abouche are lingering (even their espresso was better!).

I won't give up on this Peets. I'll keep trying, and I buy my beans here rather than one of the other Peets I frequent in order to support the local business, but I greet each espresso with suspicion. I hope this changes, I really do, but for now my morning mud will continue to come from the south side of Mt. Hermon Rd.  The drive-thru Joe on the Go just nudges out Coffee Cat for the best espresso on a consistent basis.

The pastries are better than any of the other coffee shops, but peets doesn't offer the sandwiches nor salads that Starbucks and Coffee Cat do.  These days, not having wireless (free nor paid) is just not keeping up with the times.  Starbucks has comfy couches and stuffed chairs. Coffee Cat has the wi-fi and lots and lots of seating. Peets is ascetic, with the most comfortable chairs being the wire furniture outside. With small tables, Peets really doesn't want you to hang out except for quiet conversation. This may be by design, but the vibe is always that they're a store and not a cafe. This is true for all the Peets stores, not a critique of just this shop.

Great stuff thats for sure. However, starbucks goers beware, Peet's tends not to sweeten their drinks to the brink of candy status. A bit more bitter in general but always a nice alternative to Starbucks.

As for things specific to this location, service is nice and the atmosphere is great. Not to mention its a great location and a wonderful replacement of that ramshackle of a "coffee shop" Abouche.

I frequented Abouche for my "coffee house" experience because I love the big window-covered sunny warm space and to support local business.   I boycotted Starbucks even though I preferred the coffee and drank it at ome. When Abouche went under I had decided to boycot Peets.  Then I got a Peets gift certificate, bought a pound of french roast, and have never bought anything else since.  Great coffee, less bitter than Starbucks but still rich and robust.  Peets remodel is nothing spectacular, but the staff and service are good, and most importantly I love the coffee!

This is just what Scotts Valley needed. Peet's definitely has the BEST coffee. It always has a bold, clean, smooth taste. Better than Starbucks coffee for sure.

Great staff at this place (friendly and helpful to everyone, as well as efficient) and nice atmosphere.  Oh, and good coffee!  I've bought a lot of coffee beans there, too, and appreciated that they had water-processed decaf as well as organic beans.

This is one of my favorite coffee & tea places in Scotts Valley.  The service is friendly and they brought around free drink samples.  The environment is clean and easy to study in and is one of the only places, if not the only place, that offers free wi-fi in Scotts Valley.
