Boring location with uptight patrons, snoozy atmosphere, and zero interesting foot traffic, but I got a free coffee here once, so I upgrade to two stars. Don't order anything even remotely unusual, or you'll get a "huh?" look and will be asked to repeat yourself.
I used to be a real regular here and stopped going in favor of Caffe del Doge across the way. Reasons? Seems like turnover killed the place. I generally love Peets. When I first started going here in the summer of 2007 it seemed like all the people that worked here cared about the drinks that they made (maybe too much in the case of some). It made the whole experience good. And they remembered my drink choice. A couple months ago a lot of people that had been there for a while left. Now it just seems like no one has bothered to take up the banner of really being militant about drink quality.
Like some others have said, just to many local quality places in the area to continue going to this one. Hopefully they recapture the magic someday.
I guess there must be enough Peet's loyalists around to support even this monstrous location on a block with over a dozen independent cafes. I'm working on a list of all the Palo Alto cafes, so figured I'd give this one a whirl the other afternoon. Now maybe I was in at a weird time of day, but I just didn't find much to like... the staff that day was not particularly friendly, the pastry selection was mediocre at best and the interior was decidedly big & cold. Also, they don't offer wi-fi, though I was able to sniff it from the Apple Store across the street.
Anyhow...if you're one of those aforementioned loyalists, come on in and they will hook you up with a good fix. If you're not, I'd suggest Caffe del Doge across the street.

OK So I generally love Peet's but this location was really not impressive. It felt a bit on the dirtier side - it was late in the evening, but still.
The guy behind the register was super slow and didn't finish listening before he ran off to grab something.
We sat down and heard what sounded like a stampede above our heads - didn't realize there was an upstairs with kids running around. After that settled, this woman sat down next to us and proceeded to have a full lengthy conversation with her invisible friend sitting across from her.
I really didn't expect that in Palo Alto - well the kids running around yes, but everything else not so much.

I love Peets but I especially love this Peets because it carries a variety of vegan pastries and cookies! (although they sometimes sell out) I believe this Peets also provides soymilk for regular coffee drinkers thus proving itself way cooler than other Peets. With so many people in the world being lactose intolerant and slews of folks favoring soy specialty coffees, you would think coffee shops would be inclined to cater to such demands. Anyway, I'm always thankful for the extra sensitivity and consideration.
p.s. And of course, their coffee is heavenly. Did I even need to mention that?

I like the small room at the very top.......just seriously watch your step on the way down :)
Ice tea is great here too but not as fabulous as in Burlingame

I am the hugest fan of Peet's! Gotta send some love out to the Univ. Ave branch in particular, for letting my buds and I turn the upstairs parlor area into a study hall while cramming for the Bar. A sugary, caffeine-packed scharffen-berger freddo, neutral wall colors, good natural lighting, what more could you need for some hard-core studying? Maybe some unlimited parking would be nice -- it's a pain to move your car every 3 hours, but after 5, you're good to go all night!

Even though the Peet's in Menlo Park is my favorite, I'm so happy that a Peet's has now opened on University! The one next to Whole Foods was just too far for me to go to - and I was too lazy - so this was a pleasant surprise when I passed by a couple of weeks ago.
@MattC: I agree
Blame management for the turnover
UPDATE: BYOP. Bring Your Own Pastry. The manager is diabetic so he doesn't think pastries are good for you. News flash: coffee isn't good for you either. Does "cookie" fall into the same category?? YES. Often there are no cookies available

UPDATE: I am pushing 30 so I am needing to do the secret family anti-aging regimen of tea and water in LARGE doses.
I get the ying hao jasmine hot and then pour it over ice water. By noon, I will have injested about a gallon of liquids that wash away the sediments that get in the way of my cells regenerating.

UPDATE: Peets is having a grand opening party on Sun Apr 1!

Peets is wedging in a shop next to Helio on University Ave
Now all I need is a Coffee Bean across the street and my triad of caffination will be complete.
