Despite the seedy appearance, Pedro's has a totally inoffensive selection of food at a very reasonable price. I went here during my lunch break, mainly because the graffiti they had on their storefront peaked my interest. Inside the place is pretty small, they have maybe one or two TVs, enough seats for maybe 20 people at most and a little bar area.
Buying food here isn't really too off from getting something from maybe a cafeteria, everything is under a heat lamp and it tastes like it might have been sitting there for maybe an hour or so. I ordered the fried chicken lunch special, which rang up at $5 plus another $2 for a Snapple. The fried chicken wasn't so bad, a bit boney and for the price the portion was really good considering a sandwich would be more expensive at most places in New York. Most of the portion was rice and beans, but I couldn't complain too much.
Ultimately, this isn't really a place you'd go out of your way to eat at but it isn't a bad place to show up at either. The food is fairly basic and you aren't really going to have anything that will blow you away but there is nothing wrong with being totally average either.
Brooklyn Tex-Mex was in for a tough review no matter what, given that I am coming from Austin, TX. That said, I was a big fan of San Loco in the salad days of my Williamsburg tenure. So when I found myself living in the bedroom suburb of Dumbo, I had to give the place a shot.
It's not terrible, but it's terribly overpriced for what it is. If it weren't so close to my house, I'd never set foot in the place. It's hard to screw up quesadillas and nachos, although you should request they not overdo it with the onions or black beans (which they have a tendency to do). The tacos are passable, and the service is friendly when it arrives. The beer is generally cold and they have a pretty decent selection given the single cooler.
I've never had the burgers. But then, why would I? It's a Mexican restaurant.
Note: keep track of your beers, because they tend not to and you'll pay the difference. And if you're long in the leg, you'd better watch your head in here.
Discovered this place when I jogged to Brooklyn from my hotel.
$5 lunch specials (the carnitas-like pork was excellent), $4 dollar beers, cool staff.
Just a basic place to flying in, chow down, and fly out.
I wish this place were better. The tamales are mediocre. I do always see someone I know there. I remember people who work there being nice but maybe that was when I was still rooting for this place to be worth it.
This place is quite possibly the worst restaurant in DUMBO. I can't say that I've tried every dish on the menu, but I have tried quite a few and they all failed to satisfy my taste buds. If you want Mexican food in DUMBO go to Hecho.
The only upside to this joint is that they have outdoor seating in the summer. Even then, the margaritas are no good. Bring your own mix and make your own.
Just fine little dive that delivers a decent taco for the money, doesn't over charge for a beer and has outdoor seating in the grit and noise of the base of the Manhattan Bridge. Friendly staff.
The drill is that you go inside, order what you want then bring it to you table, whether its outside or inside. In the summer you want outside. The crowd is mostly the under 30 crew with a few extra bucks in their pockets who have moved here over the last decade. That was a bit of a surprise, because back when I used to come here the crowd was mostly laborers and artists in search of cheap eats and drinks. Then again, that was over a decade ago. The place has gotten a little bit of a makeover since then, but it's still at heart the dive it always was, which makes it a nice contrast to all the high end places that have sprouted up in the neighborhood since then.
The food: It's not amazing, but nor is it expensive. It reminds me more of Central American Mexican than what I've had in Mexico, Texas or California. That's not a bad thing - the cheese is Mexican farmer's cheese and instead of sour cream they have crema. It passes, and at these prices I'd call it a deal.
Consider this a 3.5 star review, but I can't give this place four stars, so three it is. If you're into grit, find yourself in Dumbo and are put off by how "fancy" so many of the places there THIS is where you ought to go. Just don't come with high expectations - you'll be let down. Come expecting to find a charming dive in what is now an unlikely place for it, and be ever so slightly charmed by it.
Normally I give places two chances before I write them off forever, but I went here once and won't be going back. The service was that bad.
We were at the table outside right next to the front door, so we were in a very high-traffic lane for the waitstaff. Yet we waited about 10 minutes before our orders were taken and another 15 before we were served our drinks. Then one of the margaritas was sent back because there was a hair in it, and after 20 minutes of waiting for the replacement (which never came) we decided to just bag it and go to Rebar.
When I went inside to say good bye and pay at the cash register (because there's no way I was going to wait another 20 minutes for the bill), instead of offering anything close to an apology everyone inside basically pointed fingers at other staff members.
Good riddance.
I have never found food to be inedible, but that was the case at Pedros. My husband and I wandered in thinking to have a quick lunch. I ordered the fish tacos, which instead of being fried where some fish stew. One bite and I put my fork down. Absolutely disgusting. My husband had eggs, chorizo, rice, and beans. The chorizo was swimming in oil ans tasted old. My husband ate the rice and beans. The only reason I am giving them 1 star is because the beer was cold and washed the foul taste out of my mouth. It is hard to believe they actually get paid for serving food like that.
Went photohunting with my friend and we spotted this really colorful place at the corner and decided to drop in for lunch. The interior decoration is minimal with mismatching chairs, but it's a sort of cute place with a lit candle on each table. The walls are pretty unique with drawings that looks like it was drawn with a sharpie. I like the bar they have there. Okay, so the food was cheap and it is relatively pretty good. I like their chicken with black beans over yellow rice. Oh yea the fried plaintains were very good that I can probably eat it all day. The chicken quesadilla was okay. The service was pretty good too. When the weather gets warmer I would love to sit outside the next time I drop by for lunch.
Grimmy yet Great!
The food is inexpensive and you are served a healthy portion (Healthy = almost 2 servings not "Healthy" as in good for your heart)
The atmosphere is hit or miss. It reminded me of the stereotypical college grease pit complete with random outdoor chairs and tables. The furniture is more miss matched then the hipsters & construction workers that call it home.
I was in Dumbo on Saturday for a quick meeting and on my way back to the train I walked past Pedro's and stopped dead in my tracks. Holy Moly, you're still around?!!
I am so, SO glad!
Wow, I've had some good times here most especially when it's warm enough to sit outside and drink (mucho cheapo) margaritas and bullshit the night away con mi amigo's. And when you feel you are getting too wasted and want something for your belly you can get your fill on some decent Spanish fast food.
This place has character (and character's). Go before it's gone like affordable housing.
good for beer and an outdoor spot to drink it in Dumbo.
All else.....ummmmm......well.....no.
ok if youre starving or totally drunk, the nachos and tamales are edible. thats all ive ever been courageous enough to order. Im scared of the meat.
***UPDATE- NO more outdoor seating. Agh! Sucks.
I felt dirty and not in a good way. Part of that feeling may have been due to the fact that the toilet, which is right next to the kitchen, flooded and the guy who mopped up the mess came out sprinkling pee juice all over the place. Nice.
Yada, yada, yada...I ate a pork tamale, beef taco, rice/beans, plantains and a Brahma beer. It was all pretty fair.
Pedro's is probably my favorite DUMBO lunch spot on a nice day. Stop in, order a wonderful chicken burrito, get some extra green salsa on it and get the whole thing to go. Walk out to the park and sit between the two bridges and enjoy. Simple recipe, ne?
This place is messy and grimy. I don't think I'd ever order in, except maybe one of their margarita specials...its a dive, but they do have benches and you can drink outside. And no, its not California style mexican food, its something else, and that's alright because what it is happens to be nice and tasty. Pass on the beef and get something made with their fall of the bone chicken, or the tender pork, or one of the tamales.
$35 today for two 16oz cups of bad margaritas. Yes, $35 for a SMALL PITCHER OF WATERY MARGARITAS. We got the bill with no information or clarity or anything about what we got, just horrible. The food was marginal at best, but being blatantly ripped off pisses me off.
Oh snap, Pedro's is THE SPOT. I'm not sure what people are expecting from there, but clearly you've missed the point if you were looking for Dos Caminos style Mexican...yeah you can got 2 blocks away to Hecho and have better food, but if you want no frills, cheap, decent Mexican food, then Pedro's is it..where else can you go to where they set up DJ equipment on the sidewalk, and rock out to old school hip hop, r&b, and house music on Memorial Day..I guess when you're not from NYC, you just don't understand certain things..
This place is unbelievably cheap, and the food is very good. The building looks like the last relic standing from DUMBO past.
I chuckled when I walked in and saw Christmas lights sloppily strewn around the interior, and heard the campy music playing. The management and staff are so inviting, and something about just being there makes you feel good. Whenever I'm back in the area, I'll have to stop back in.
This is my favorite Cuban Sandwich in the city- and maybe I accidentally got it on a good night, but it was amazing. I've been back, and the quality varies, but I love this place, and their Cubano is usually strong. That and great sloppy ambiance. Hope this place can survive in that neighborhood- I love going there.
Pedro's has taken a nosedive since the departure from the neighborhood of stalwarts like Between the Bridges. I cannot fathom what the new exterior decorations are meant to add. But it's always kind of funny to see the cool crowd get gulled by mediocrity. Back in the old days, this was a fine spot to eat cheap, mediocre food and talk to the owner, and perhaps buy her a beer and vice versa. Now, the food is past the point of unacceptability and the restaurant seems to have consciously traded in on its neighborhood appeal, opting instead for cheap shtick that thousands of postgrad hipster doodlebugs have already rendered obsolete and passe.
Tiny bar in a building that looks like it's about to fall down. Fortunately, they have outdoor seating. This place has a great friendly, dive bar vibe. They used to have live music, (quite a feat given the size of the place) usually salsa or latin jazz, but I'm not sure if they still do. A warning: I don't recommend the food unless you've been drinking all night and really need something to absorb the booze, it's pretty greazy.
wonderful place, small quaint, friendly staff. went by here after walking across the bk bridge... very friendly and polite. the food is fun and exciting. i will def come here next time i walk across the bridge again... cool bk vibe!
This just set the record for the worst service I ever received in my entire life. We were with people who specifically wanted to eat at this place so we grinned and bared it, but you could not pay me to return to this place. We waited for 20 minutes before I went in and grabbed us menus. Then 15 minutes later another member of my party went in to ask if we could put our order in (the waitress had walked by us about 3 times without asking us). I asked for a dos equis, she said what? After asking me what the beer was an astounding 3 more times (literally) they brought it out and sat it 2 tables down. Then the food, bland, no salsa on anything: tacos, nachos, the table. I think our waitress was "touched" as they say. She forgot a drink and an entree to boot. Never again.
Pedro's is that awesome neighborhood place that you're a little scared to go into but once you do you're hooked. $3 margaritas and a $4 HUGE cuban sandwich? Umm...yeah! And you can watch the ridiculously overpriced apartment highrise being thrown up as you indulge. Ahh DUMBO...what will ye become?
Pedro's now sits across from a humungous building that looks like something out of the movie Brazil. Oh well - change was inevitable, I guess. Hard to imagine the owners of Pedro's holding out for much longer, though. Still good for a bottle of Tecate outside with some friends before heading down to the water to watch the lights of the Manhattan Bridge.
I just ate lunch here and, as much as I wanted to like it, it was simply fair. The service was friendly and the food seemed fresh but was still seriously lacking. My burritio had peas in it. Has anyone ever had a burritio with peas and carrots thrown in? I think they might have been the packaged frozen kind. And I don't believe there was any salsa on it. This may have been my fault, because I ran to the restroom during its creation. I must have missed any inquiries into my fondness for all things spicy. With a heavy sigh, I did my best to enjoy my Brooklyn burrito. Can we finally just admit that NY doesn't know how to make one? I'm really tired of trying to prove otherwise.
The perfect place to sip on a sloe gin, eat some rice & beans and enjoy some live music or al fresco dining when in DUMBO. This place has surely been around since long before that neighborhood got its new acronymic name. Enjoy this kind of place while you still can.
ah pedro's - I have a feeling I'll be eating here a lot since it's the divey-est place near my new apt that's open during the weekends. I ate dinner here the other day, and overall I enjoyed it. it's pretty cheap, the owners are friendly, nice beer selection and the food is pretty good. I had the pork, rice & beans, which was very yummy but the rice was kinda crunchy and undercooked. SIGH! I'm asian so messed up rice is a big no no. that said, I'm sure I'll be back anyway, hopefully it'll be better the next time. the beans and pork were really good though!
Ok. Here's the deal. Decent food. Grimy interior. Cheap prices. Happy hour is 4pm - 7pm. $3 beers. They have other deals but i didn't get a chance to check those out. food is pretty good. the thing that sells this place is its outdoor seating (we had to sit inside for a few minutes while a table opened up. You're basically sitting on the sidewalk. the eye candy can get interesting. on a nice day... this place is hard to beat. if it's raining - go down the street to hecho.
