Handheld savory snacks.
Perfect if yr not too hungry.
I had one today.
The beef one.
It was good.
Crusty on the outside,
not too messy to eat,
warm and yummy on the inside!
Kind of sad they got rid of
some of the yummier varieties though.
K, see ya. -

When it gets down to it, I'm a sucker for handheld meals, from the girthiest of burritos to the humble hot pocket. That being said, when I saw "Peasant Pies" in the distance, calling to my food-deprived body, I couldn't say no.
I ordered two pies for what was literally a breakfast on the run: Ham, Egg and Cheese and Basque Beef. Both pies came out hot, and helped to warm my hands while I waited to catch the 44 towards Glen Park.
Ham, Egg, and Cheese: Very nicely done. A flaky crust filled with chunks of ham, eggs (the texture of which was tragically in the mold of Hot Pockets) and melted cheese. Tons of cheese, everywhere. Cheese telling me how much it liked my shirt, cheese wanting to shake my hand, cheese asking me if it could take a mustache ride (which is totally understandable). Cheese, Cheese, Cheese. 4 Stars.
Basque Beef: The weaker of the two. Not only was the crust a bit dense for my liking (read: possibly a bit past its prime) the flavors of the beef and onions were overwhelmed by the tomato sauce base. 2 Stars.
Overall: A good place to pick up a quick bite to eat. -

If you like empanadas, you will like Peasant Pies. They are the same concept, but slightly different form. Instead of stuffed dough pockets, peasant pies take the form of a mini pie.
My favorite peasant pie was the sweet potato. It was luscious and creamy, with a subtle hint of nutmeg and cinnamon. It is not too sweet, a problem I've encountered with many a sweet potato pie.
The basque beef and potatoes was a total throwback to the Filipino empanadas I grew up eating and the Argentinian empanadas I ate in Buenos Aires. Ground beef sauteed with onion and spices, then simmered with sweet tomato sauce, mushrooms and roasted potatoes. The basque peasant pie was slightly sweet, yet savory, hearty and delicious.
My only disappointment was the turkey cranberry. Upon my first bite, I couldn't even remember what I had ordered. The flavor was so non-descript. The turkey filling lacked flavor and the cranberry was non-existent.
Luckily, I liked the other 2 peasant pie flavors enough to overlook the turkey cranberry. -

SO GOOD. Especially if you're a fan of chicken pot pies and the like, and/or lean pockets. Food inside crust. Money.
Great snack if you need something quick to fill your stomach while waiting in line for San Tung. The employees are nice. The place is clean.
I want more.... who doesn't love a savory pie? -

Im serious when i say they taste like empanadas. Could it be las doñas that are working in the back? Or cuz its the same thing? Either way, they have choices in the savory and sweet category so its definitely better than other spots. I recomend it and ill go back but im not busting back flips or anything. Maybe at a later time though, who knows?.....

post race Chicken and potato pie... shared this w/ the bestie, while waiting for our table at a restaurant nearby...
crust was good.
insides... lots of peas. i'm not a fan of peas.
a bit on the sweeter side, rather than the savory side.
will try another type next time to see if I like this place or not. -

Wish you were in NYC. I miss you!!! Memories of riding bikes through Golden Gate Park to the ocean and back and always stopping in for some hot yummy pies afterwards.

I love the idea of hand held pies. The entire idea seems so genius.. So where did they miss the mark? Flavors.. Where are the flavors??
Spinach & feta cheese didn't have as much cheese as I would hope for.
Ham, egg & cheese had a little flavor.
Spicy broccoli was not spicy at all.
All were pretty bland. Nothing sriracha couldn't help. Wished I could give it a few more stars, but it just didn't do it for me. Sorry. -

As far as "bang for your buck" this place is the best. A good friend and San Francisco native took me here, after raving about these pies. They've options that are both savory and sweet, but equally delicious.
I had the cherry, and I believe something with spinach (could be mushrooms & cheese in the mix as well.) They are best warm, and they'll heat it up for you there, or you can take it to go. One pie was honestly enough for my appetite that day, but I wanted to get the full experience. The crusts were light, flaky, and crispy on the edges.
It's been a while since I've been here, but I can't wait to go back. -

I've heard it said that second chances CAN in fact elicit happy endings. Coincidentally, my second encounter with Peasant Pies ended up being a testament to the veracity of this statement.
This time around I decided on the Curry Potato pie. Ironically, it was more by default that I ended up with this one as I initially planned on getting something more carnivorous. However, at 5:45 PM, 15 minutes before closing, it was either the Spicy Black Bean & Organic Tofu or the Curry Potato. Since I notoriously avoid anything with the word "spicy" in its name, I opted for the latter.
Well, I'm happy to announce that the Curry Potato pie was tasty enough to garner an additional star. Yes, the pie crust is on the thick and dense side, as opposed to light and flaky like I normally prefer, but it still works. And the curry potato filling was moist and well-seasoned. Not dry and bland like my first experience with the Spinach & Feta Cheese pie.
True, it's impossible go back and make a brand new start, but the Curry Potato pie sure succeeded in creating a different, happier ending. 4 stars!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Nina Y.
We had passed by this place so many times, and my boyfriend already had a menu from the place. It was decided that we would get up hopefully at a decent hour and get some pies.
They were some really delicious pies.
FOOD:
beef and potato - pretty good. There was definitely both flavors present.
persian stew - monthly special. It was decent...except that it had eggplant and I hate eggplants. Other than that, it was okay.
egg, sausage and potato - good. You kind had to go find the sausage pieces, but it was still moist after being baked.
curried potato (vegan) - most flavor out of the four savory ones we had. It was like a Indian curry, but in pie form. Delicious!
DESSERT:
blueberry pear - I thought that the blueberry totally overpowered the flavor of the pear. Once you took the blueberries off though, the pear shined through and the pear tasted so fresh and sweet. It was a pretty good pie.
cherry, banana, chocolate - I thought they were strawberries at first, but it was good regardless. the cherries were definitely the most powerful flavor and chocolate coming right after that. The banana was kind of lost in the whole thing, but since I love chocolate it's okay.
It's a cute little store with very few tables, so most people just take it out to eat since it is a handheld pie. There was only 1 person working - both reheating them and working as the cashier so when the "lunch rush" started, he was all over the place.
BUT $2.95 per pie? count me in especially the dessert ones. -

After we posted our last review, the owner of Peasant Pies contacted us. He wanted our experience to be the best as possible. We appreciated that a lot and made sure to head back to visit Peasant Pies for our lunch today.
We ordered the pie of the month (Persian Veggie) and the spinach & feta and the vegan vegetable soup. They were delicious, healthy, and reasonably priced.
The gentleman working was very pleasant and attentive even considering a busy lunch hour. It made our experience here that much better.
We look forward to coming back and trying all of the different veggie pies.
Thanks Peasant Pies! -

No idea that there was a shop let alone 3 of them in SF that sold portable pies. We went to this location near closing time only a few storefronts away from San Tung.
The display case still had several quality selections to choose from. We chose the Cherry, Banana & Chocolate, Chocolate Flan, Spicy Clam Tomato Sauce, Sweet Potato, and Basque Beef & Potato. All pies are $2.95 each. A couple we ate there and the others we saved for later.
The pie crust is definitely heavy and dense. Eating a couple of them alone should quiet your hunger pangs for a few hours. My favorites were the Basque Beef & Potato for its rich and hearty filling and the sweet potato for being so velvety and not overwhelmingly sweet. Every other pie I tried was average.
Its a good place for a quick snack and if for whatever reason the Dry Fried Chicken Wings from San Tung didn't fill me up, I will stop by for a pie to munch on. -

Peasant Pies changed my life. I survived on Peasant Pies throughout college. As a nursing student, they were the best meal to bring to the hospital, easy reheated meal! They are all delicious, I don't even have a favorite (changes daily!). They are such a good deal, and they also freeze easily so it is simple to stock up for later.
John is the best, but all of the staff is friendly and will help you decide which pie is the one for you to try first.
The coffee is amazing also, and so are the soups! They always have one vegan soup option as well.
Please eat here! I live in San Diego now but buy as many as I can of these every time I come. -

We shared the vanilla pie and the meat and potatoes pie and btoh delicious. Reasonable prices, warm food and enough food to stuff you up for lunch.

I'm exploring the idea that I might be lactose intolerant. I'm not super excited about it, but places like Peasant Pie make it a little more tolerable.
Pie crusts at PP are all whole wheat and vegan. That means I can eat a meat pie and not have to worry that the crust contains butter. I've tried the vegan black bean tofu and the chicken potato pies. I preferred the chicken pie, but I'm not a big fan of tofu used as a filler.
According to my friend, who is a regular, it takes approximately 1.5 pies to fill an average lady appetite. This proved to be correct on our visit. Bring a friend and share! -

I am a huge fan of Peasant pies. I am not much of a pie person.. but I gave these a try based on my wife's interest was sparked by her co worker.
My wife saved me a moroccan lentil pie. These became my favorite and I go every week to buy a few. These fill me up for a long time.
My other favorite is the chocolate flan.
Prices are right and you can buy them fresh. -

I like the concept of peasant pies - sounds hearty and filling.
We purchased 7 different pies:
1) curried potatoes: the best peasant pie and probably the only one I would eat again.
2) lentils: decent, again with a curry-ish taste
3) beef and tomato: okay, though the beef taste didn't come through and the flavor was rather unexciting
4) egg/cheese: skip, not tasty at all
5) blueberry/pear: This was the best dessert of the bunch - lots of tiny blueberries
6) chocolate mousse: meh.. I've had much better mousse
7) banana/cherry/chocolate: pass. too many different flavors, the cherry just didn't mesh with any
I love the concept, but left rather unsatisfied. I think my disappointment was with primarily with the crust which was dry and bland. All of our savory pies were reheated in the oven which I think only exacerbates the dry-ness. I also think the fillings could use more pronounced flavor especially to counter balance the heaviness of the crust.
If you can get the pies right out of the oven, I think your experience wil be much better. -

In the war against pie versus cake, pies takes the cake, so to speak. Who's going to eat a savory cake with lentils or beef inside? No one. Peasant Pies offers tasty savory pies over their sweet pies. And the brilliant part? They're hand pies, so you can eat while on the go. There is nothing better than being able to walk down the street while shoving a pie in your mouth. Some real competition against those cupcakes. The savory ones are delicious (eggplant tomato is my favorite), and the sweet ones are good too.
It's become a thing for me to buy a savory and a sweet one on the weekend, take them home to heat up and have with a fresh cup of coffee. -

My mom and I were in the neighborhood and decided to stop in this place because we love pies. We didn't realize that peasant pies are different than your typical American pies, but this surprise turned out to not be so bad.
We ended up making the pies our dinner and dessert for the night. We split a spinach & feta pie and a chicken & potato pie. We brought them home, stuck them in the oven for about 10 minutes (the 7 minutes they suggested wasn't long enough), and ate. The pies were good, but neither of us thought that they were anything to write home about. I wish I also got the chance to try to curry potato pie or the clam & tomato pie; alas, next time...
For dessert, my mom got the apple crisp pie and I got the cherry banana chocolate pie. We warmed these up in the oven for about 5 minutes and I ended up having mine a la mode. These were our favorites from Peasant Pies; we both thought they were super yummy.
Overall, it's an inexpensive place ($2.95 a pie) with a unique product that I think is actually a really cute concept. I'll probably go back sometime, but I'm not in any hurry as the food wasn't anything outstanding. -

Maybe cause I went here half an hour before closing. Maybe because it's because I didn't eat them right away and they just sat in the fridge. Maybe because I got the wrong flavors.
Don't get me wrong, for $2.95 a pie this place is absolutely cute and adorable. Everything packed into a small handheld pie is what everyone's dream come true. Not to mention the staff is friendly and they provide a variety of flavors. But the pies were a bit dry for me, and something about the flavor was off, missing that kick. I wanted to add hot sauce to everything!
Overall, 3 stars. I'll try again once more (fresh and at immediately), just in case I was wrong.
Edit:
Definitely better when fresh. Btws, spicy clams and tomato. It's like heaven. -

I happened to find this place by accident. I was actually going to get take-out from San Tung but they were closed, so I decided to drop in to try Peasant Pies. I'd have to agree with Charlton that it's "Hot Pockets for Yuppies!" The dough was a bit too heavy and dense for me, but it's priced right at $2.95 each and a good find for anyone who may be vegan.

Way good! Happened to walk by, never heard of the place before. Split the Moroccan lentil and the Black bean + tofu. Awesome! Inexpensive, really tasty, filling; simple ingredients. Plenty of choices for vegetarians and vegans - sweet potato, egg + cheese, eggplant + tom, spinach and feta, etc. The sign on the wall gives you nutritional facts for each flavor, how nice of them.
Also tried the apple crumble which was already really great. Had some cranberry in there. The pumpkin looks crazy good.
OH yeah, and they're so darned cute!!! **I heard they make these big if you call 24 hrs in advance.

Came across this place after lunch at San Tung. Wanted something sweet to finish it off so we mostly got sweet pies.
I liked the crust. The pies are not that sweet, I wish they could be sweeter, but if you advertise it a something healthy... well I guess less sugar is healthy.
I think I would prefer the savory pies and would try that.. But the sweet pies are not my cup of tea. It's just missing something, no just the sugar. lol -

When I first heard about Peasant Pies I was really excited to try it out.
I walked in after a haircut to try some of their meat pies. After I walked in, I was a bit disappointed. Their pies were tiny! I mean, sure it's a personal pie, but my first thoughts of this place were they were huge pies.
I ordered a few pies from here since and they're good. Kind of a thick outer crust with warm clumps of meat and veggies stuffed inside. Cheap and satisfying. It's like a little snack while you're walking around the inner sunset.
The worker there is really nice. He looks really bored. Maybe it's just that I got in at odd hours and there's just no one there.
Anyways, this place is basically my only impression of meat pies and I'm a fan for sure. -

With San Tung dry fried chicken wings in hand, this interesting store 2 doors down called Peasant Pies was beckoning me...
Love pot pies and places like the Cravery in Los Altos so had to try Peasant Pies. Friendly little place that welcomes you to 10+ different pies (many salty pies for a meal, some sweet dessert ones).
Tried the Chicken Potato Veggie and the Zucchini, Mushroom, and Cheese ones (each $2.85). As promised, these were mini self-contained "hand-held meals" that you can take anywhere and don't need a plate or fork. Very convenient. The ingredients inside tasted reasonably fresh.
But the part that was disappointing was the crust - it was a hard crust that didn't have too much taste... I was expecting a much more flaky and buttery chicken pot pie or Cravery type crust. Maybe it was by design to make the crust more healthy, less buttery, and transportable, but I do like my buttery crust.
Bottom line: Love the concept, crust could be less hard and more tasty. Tastes a lot better heated up. Thank you 19th century French villagers for inventing peasant pies. 3.5 stars. -

I always end up here when the wait at San Tung is long.
I've had:
Apple cinnamon, blueberry, and pear. I love how their all individual sized and still holds flavor even a day or two after ( I always end up buying too much and can't eat it all in one sitting lol).
I still have the custard in the fridge & will update once I've tried it :)
I've heard a lot of good things about their meat pies, but have not tried it yet since I'm always there near closing time.
I love how the pies are individual portions.
Service-always friendly, even when it's been a long day. -

Went here numerous amount of times and have never been disappointed. Price is good and you will always have room for dessert!
I've had the chicken potato, ham, cheese and eggs, and a special tuna one. What amazes me about this place is the balance. You would think that there would be more bread than anything but that is not the case at all. The bread mixes well with all the ingredients and doesn't over power the flavors of each pie.
For dessert I have had chocolate flan and sweet potato pie. The chocolate is so rich and works well with the crust, it delivers the right amount of sweetness and savory flavor all in this little pie. My all time favorite is the sweet potato pie, it's so is warm and gooey and sweet. I can honestly go on about this for forever. If you like sweet potatoes you will surely enjoy this!
So if you are looking for a portable pie in the city definitely go to peasant pies! -

Ordered: All Savory pies
1) Basque Beef & Potato--tasted like a calzone: 2.5/5
2) Moroccan Lentil -tasted like lentil with cumin: 2.5/5
1st attempt: FAILED--came here around 8pm, and it was closed!
2nd attempt: Arrived when they first opened their doors at 9am! Success!
The cashier was super nice! He assisted me in picking out my pies. (they're bite-sized--about the size of Dan Tat--Asian Egg Custard)
I was disappointed after taking a bite into my two pies :(! I guess after all the hype and anticipation, I would rather have a Dan Tat in the other side of town (if you know which bakery i am referring to! ;D ) -

While i do appreciate the concept of eating just one, conveniently packaged and fully filled pie for lunch, i think their crust is just a bit too lackluster for me to eat the pies often. it's sort of bread-y and dense and altogether boring. the fillings are good. i've tried various flavors, like spinach and feta or eggplant, and they were all good; definitely better if crust was better. i do like that they cater to vegetarians and vegans as well as our meat eating counterparts.
every single time i come back, i wish i could love this place. their service is so friendly and it just feels cozy. i mean, what's more homey and cozy than eating a filled pie with hot soup on a foggy sf day next to the merry, happy guy behind the counter? nothing.
so i encourage you to try them. maybe you will find their pie crust to your liking. i hope you do because i really want to see them do well. -

A gem! I'm so happy to have stumbled on this place while on my way to a nearby restaurant. Great for people who have a savory (or sweet!) tooth but perhaps not the largest appetite or are on the go since they are completely portable and the perfect case of the munchies size!
I tend to go for the savory stuff. I haven't had a pie I didn't like here, and on each visit I look forward to seeing what new concoctions they have.
I've also reheated them in the oven and the instructions on the bag work perfectly. Still delicious after reheat.
Staff has always been very friendly here, too. Even when they were cleaning up shop and technically past hours, they let me get a couple pies. Keep up the great work! -

When you first enter the store, you're immediately greeted with a waft of aromatic baked goods, which, I found to be quite uplifting and a great contrast to the rather depressing store name.
Hoping the pies tasted as good as the aroma, I ordered their "Pie of the Month", which, for February, was the Mendoza Beef. From what I can remember, it included ground beef, a hard boiled egg, some onions, and some olives. Anyways, as for how it tasted, I must say that for a "Pie of the Month" it really wasn't all that amazing. I mean, the beef tasted almost exactly like the beef found in standard tacos!
However, despite my disappointing first impression, I wouldn't mind coming back to try their other pies, especially their Sweet Pies. Hopefully they taste as good as they look...
For now though, this place is an A-OK in my books.
Also, if you're wondering, I asked what their most popular pies were and they said it was their Spinach and Feta Cheese and their Chicken and Potato. -

"What's better than pies?" said the gf. Indeed! There should be one of these stores on every block. For $2.95, you can get one of a dozen or more (at any given time) savory or sweet pies, just big enough for a hearty snack. Two are a meal. We each had a heated zucchini, mushroom & cheese with flaky, delicious whole wheat crust on both top & bottom. Kind of like a British pastie. She had a chocolate pie for dessert, and I had blueberry. There are few things on earth better than a good pie.

I came in having high hopes for a small, but tasty pie. I ordered the spinach and cheese for $3. Really cheap, but my pie's crust was not the best I've had, and it contained too much spinach and too little cheese. Although, I will probably come back to try their sweet ones instead of the savory ones.
One more thing - although the cashier was nice, he seemed uncertain what was in his own pies. When I asked if there's onions in the feta cheese one just to make sure, he told me no when it clearly stated that there were on the name tag. I pointed this out to him, and he said.. "maybe just a little." What if someone was allergic to a certain ingredient? You can't just lie to them. If you're unsure, be honest and ask the bakers. -

I often stop by Peasant Pies around 730 am for a veggie, egg, and cheese and a pie for lunch. They're awesome for vegetarians. I often get the moroccan lentil and sweet potato.

The crust here is made with whole wheat but still manages not to be too dry. It does its job of holding the ingredients together without getting too soggy. The flavors sound creative and enticing but the execution could use a little bit more improvement; it just seems to fall flat a little bit. One or two aren't bad as a snack, but you'd need several more to make it a
complete meal. Seeing as how they're about $3 each, it just seems too expensive to make coming here a regular habit for lunch. I do like the dessert tarts though; pear and blueberry were pretty good :] They will warm the pies up for you so you can eat them hot on the way out though! -

Peasant Pies is A-OK.
I stopped in on my way to Golden Gate Park and was excited because I had heard pretty good things about this place. I had the Spinach and Feta pie which was pretty good. I would say the reason why I am not entirely impressed with these pies is because they seem to be lacking some flavor. They aren't bad, just bland. It's missing that wow factor for me.
However, for 2.95 these pies are filled with goodness and pretty darn filling. The restaurant is clean, they have coffee, water, juices and of course an assortment of pies to choose from. They also have desert pies which I have yet to try but plan on doing so in the near future. -

Nothing in this place compares to the kind of pot-pies I've had in Australia.
Pies in Australia: Heavily curried and other various savory entrees in a robust, thin, flaky crust. Served in a small, nicely designed, cardboard box, with a huge scoop of mashed potatoes directly on top. It was the most savory pot pie I have ever had.
Pies at Peasant Pies: Simple, thick crust. Savory pies are a bit flat in taste. Fillings tasted as if I could concoct it in my own kitchen. Served blistering hot if wanted. I've already tried 5 kinds, and none of which inspired a better review.
Goodness I miss those pies in Australia... -

Peasant Pies are not really for peasants I am afraid. They are more like Hot Pockets for Yuppies!
Although Peasant Pies are healthier and tastier than Hot Pockets, they are only the size of my PALM and it takes THREE pies to get me 80% full. The remaining 20% is reserved for DESSERTS.
These pies are made fresh daily from the kitchen in the back. Their crust contain no butter nor eggs, only whole wheat flour, yeast, olive oil, salt and water. They are good for vegetarians and vegans too.
At a glance, these pies are pretty cheap at $2.85 a piece, but only certain flavors are worth trying. The chicken pie, for example, is dry and is just a waste of caloric intake.
I enjoy and recommend 3 hearty pies:
a) Spinach and feta cheese.
b) Moroccan Lentil.
c) Basque Beef.
The Ham, Eggs, and Cheese pie and the Curried Potato pie
are my second alternatives when the first three choices are sold out.
I have also tried their sweet pies, like the sweet potato and the vanilla flan. They are OK. The attentive staff toasts the pies at no charge.
One pie may be great for a snack or on the go, but a peasant would rather get a $5 footlong from Subway for the price! I have bought some of these pies for snacks to take home too. Just bake them in the oven at 400 F for 8 minutes.
Lastly, their organic soup has good balance, texture and taste.
Peasant Pies overall has a great concept and is a great alternative to fast food. Their pies are pleasant and affordable to peasants.
