Being less then a block from my office, I frequent this place often because of its convenience.
The prices are for the most part reasonable, especially on the stuff at the deli counter. The people behind the deli counter never seem like they want to be there but they have some magical ability to remember everyones order perfectly. Not once have they gotten a sandwich that I've ordered wrong. Stay away from the burgers though, they're really dry and plain.
They have a wide variety of things there, like a sushi bar, a salad bar and all sorts of candy from around the world. They even have Pocky if you're ever in a pinch for a snack while watching fansubs of Naruto on your laptop in Brooklyn Bridge park.
They have some special sandwiches at the deli counter, I'll describe a few of them briefly:
1) Chicken Parm hero: Really good, though in the description for it they list "fresh mozzarella" instead of parmesan cheese. They also put basil leaves on it which I take off, but it leaves a good taste behind.
2) Monte Cristo hero: A hero with bacon, ham, turkey, provolone and lettuce. Not even remotely like any other monte cristo i've ever had, but still really good. Also eating one of these takes about 10 years off your life so eat with caution.
3) The Peas and Pickles hero: Does not contain peas or pickles, surprisingly.
The woman at the register is often very rude to her employees and sometimes customers, though less so if you're a regular. I've managed to strike up small conversations here and there with her without her yelling at me. The line here gets really long around lunch time on weekdays. One minute there will be no one and the next minute the line is out the door.
Peas and Pickles also has not one, but TWO atms, located by each door, for maximum convenience.
Everyone working at the register treats you like an asshole for the first month, it seems like. But once they realize that you're a 'regular' they're actually very kind.
I hear the same thing about anyone who eats at their food bar. It all looks delicious but is bland as anything.
No matter how fast I try to be, I can't seem to get out of this place without smelling like I work in food service (if you've done it, you know the smell).
But they do have a wide selection of fancy food, junk food, fresh food, and they take credit cards at a $5 minimum.
I've decided I don't like this place. Their "fresh" sandwiches aren't fresh. My tuna sandwich was kinda old and sucked and I felt sick after a turkey sandwich. My egg and cheese was awful and the employees seem really unhappy, but I assume that's because the lady up front, who I think may be the owner, is really mean to them. That's not cool. Don't be mean to your employees.
She also doesn't make any sense.
Me: Hey, do you sell disposable gloves?
Her: What?! What?!
Me: Gloves. That you can use and then throw away.
Her: We have these.
Me: Those are dishwashing gloves.
Her: We don't have those. These are better anyway!
Me: Ok....I guess I'll take two.
Which is why, if you walk by Front and Washington around 7, you will see me and Bill cleaning up, all manly-like, in dishwashing gloves.

So I just got a weekend job in DUMBO and about mid-day through my first Saturday, I meander outside… Read more »
Very nice corner market full of great items to consume. I stopped in here on my way home and grabbed all the essentials.
I was able to get the usual "ABC" suspects while here:
Apple butter...check.
Beer...check.
Cat food...check.
This place also has a great salad bar, tons of organic goodies, imported products from Europe, good looking produce and even a cat that wanders around the aisles. The cute critter even came up to my wife and used her pants as a scratching post. Prices were on par or a tad lower with the market next door.
It has an art gallery next door and Front Street Pizza across the street. Definitely check it out for tons while in the DUMBO area.
Small corner market in DUMBO. Venture in to get some last minute needs. Mines were fruit pastilles and veggie jerky ;-) A bit pricey, but really the only place I have seen in a long while that sells veggie jerky!
4 Stars for Convenience
My friends have a loft on John st., right around the corner...
How many places deliver 24 hours? Well, maybe in New York a lot more than Boston...but convenience can not be underrated....I mean, it is so convenient- and they have beer at any hour!! Again, beautiful.
The pre-prepared food lacks freshness a lot- and their sushi is suspect to me...But they have a good amount of stuff other than that and a deli to boot (I just wanted to use that expression)
Bottom Line: An essential neighborhood staple.
This place has the appearance of being a nice corner market and convenience shop. The selection is varied, and I was very happy to see a line of ITO EN products. But the place is just too small to handle the number of people in here on a typical Saturday afternoon. I had to wait in line to see what was in any given refrigerator -- that's just ridiculous. And the aisles are so close to each other, that you are constantly bumping into people and asking permission to get around them. In 5 minutes, my stress spiked, and I just wanted to get the hell out of here. One saving grace is that they do have an ATM located at their entrance, which is convenient for some of the cash only options in the area.
Peas and Pickles in a number of things: Sushi, grocery, hot buffet, salad bar, florist and deli. They do some of these things well and some not so well.
The deli is good, but it's exactly the same as what Bridge Fresh does, only Bridge Fresh does it better. The daily selection at the hot food buffet and salad bar is a lottery each day between something really delicious or something bordering on gross. When they have good food out it's amazing. But I usually have a Plan B when I go in, just in case it's not as good looking or has been wiped out (which happens by the afternoon sometimes).
The grocery is not discount but not sky-high prices either. The sushi is pretty good. And the florist selection is great. Peas and Pickles is not the best in quality when everything about them is added up, but it's still one of the places that comes to mind when I think of DUMBO.
Anyone who has lived at the St. George Hotel in Brooklyn Heights can attest to the greatness of Peas & Pickles.
For those of you who don't live nearby - but need a break from your hectic Manhattan day...
Start coughing at work. Make everyone WANT you to leave for the rest of the day. Mope out of the office like you're truly upset about your devastating illness. Then take the A/C train straight to High street. Make a stop at Peas & Pickles for a hero sandwich (my favorite is the simple turkey, muenster cheese, tomato, mayo) and a refreshing beverage (I like to pair my sandwich with the ever popular the Arizona peach iced tea). Then head down to the Brooklyn Heights promenade, find a bench, and enjoy an afternoon of peaceful people watching and reflection with the Manhattan cityscape as your backdrop. Ahhhhh heaven.
A pretty decent lunch choice -- they've got a huge selection. Freshly prepared sushi, a great (and affordable @ $5/lb) salad bar that's pretty delicious, and made-to-order sandwiches.
Their prices for groceries aren't too bad either.
After living in Midtown Manhattan for about 9 months, I was thrilled to move to Brooklyn Heights and find that there was a great 24 hour convenience store/deli/grocery store nearly right across from where I was living (St. George Hotel dorm). Aside from Duane Reade, there really isn't anywhere open 24 hours in midtown because it's mostly just a bunch of banks. Sundays were also difficult, forcing me to create this silly Haiku one day:
Sunday in Midtown
nothing is ever open
All I want is soup.
Although Peas & Pickles didn't sell soup, it sold pretty much everything else. Their snack section was filled with not only normal snack food, but also their healthier counterparts. Rather than getting Doritos (which is probably would have been what I ended up with at Duane Reade), I usually ended up getting smart puffs or popcorn that was only flavored with sea salt or a tiny bit of olive oil. It's safe to say that this place saved me from gaining another 10 lbs this past summer.
They have a really good selection of ice cream and organic alternatives to soups and cereals. Their produce is always really fresh. They don't have the largest refrigerated section, so if you're picky about what brand of milk you buy, you may want to wait until Gristede's, the grocery store next door opens.
I'm not sure who the people who felt disrespected dealt with at Peas, but I pretty much only ever saw 2 guys working there who were always really friendly and polite despite the fact that it was normally really late and they probably would have preferred to be sleeping.
I work very close. Like, round trip from my desk to here, get food, and back is 5 minutes. That's dangerously close. The vegetarian-power-pocket-empenada looking things are seriously awesome. Some of the stuff here is way cheaper than Forager's down the road. Oh yeah, they carry Sweet Leaf Tea (shout out to Austin!) which is probably my favorite sweet tea in the galaxy. Oh man, this place is going to be my friend.
From the outside it looks like a charming deli. From the inside, it's chaos and havoc. You have to jump over people like hurdles to get simple sushi. Wait, why can't I just go to a sushi bar.
I was actually impressed with this little place. I was staying with my friend at her cousins dorm @ the Hotel St. George, and about 1am we were looking for something to snack on so we headed over here. I found a lot of stuff you would find in high end super markets, all in this little bodega, such as San Pellegrino Limonata, and all kinds of tasty candy. I was also surprised by the excellent variety of produce, again -- a lot like a high end super market. Only 4 stars instead of 5, b/c it is a bit pricey...but your paying extra for the convienence I guess.
Parking in this neighborhood is hard to come by, be prepared to walk.
"I think I need to take money out of an ATM."
"I think I'll go to Peas and Pickles."
YA HEARD
Generic overpriced yuppie-mart. I do patronize the Brooklyn Heights branch of this place because of their beer selection, but the Washington Street location has pretty surly employees, particularly one older woman who seems to harbor a visceral dislike for her clientele. There is a new store on Jay Street that I think is owned by the same people but has a different name. That place is alright, but I recommend Jimi's, the place just down Jay Street towards the river. They have much better prices and are very nice too.
Apart from having an excellent name, Peas & Pickles is one of the best things about DUMBO. Back in the olden days, Moisturizer used to rehearse down there and there were only 3 places to get something to eat (see reviews of Pedro's and Jimi's). Peas & Pickles is a big fancy convenience store/supermarket/susheria/salad bar/hot buffet with chairs & tables to eat at and it's open 24 hours. Their produce is always excellent and they have a full range of health food store beauty products. I commend and thank them on every level.
Some of the friendliest people I've come across in this area! No complaints from me. I like the people at peas and pickle so much, I take the liberty of calling them my friends. Favorite product will have to be their rice pudding, love, love, love it. Had my first vegan / power sandwich from here and still having them.
One of my favorite supermarkets. I always stop by when I'm in the area. I love how they have chairs and tables. It totally beats Pathmark's.
Small grocery/large bodega. They have a large selection of stuff but they seem really expensive, especially on fruits and vegetables. The salad bar is cheap, $4.59/lb, as is the deli food. The cashiers are always rude or at the least aloof.
Peas and Pickles is getting some new competition now...unfortunately it's still the best food store in DUMBO. And that's not saying much. I should say that I am a die-hard Manhattan girl, and only venture outside of my beloved borough to see my Brooklyn-bound boyfriend. I find it very difficult to get what I want and need in this store though. They have a good produce selection, but lack in most other areas. They really need to stock some frozen Tombstone pizza, and some normal Hormel pepperoni. And I don't understand why the deodorant has to be behind the counter...that makes me very nervous. I do really like the idea of a Mom and Pop shop, but in reality, I wish DUMBO had a good old Food Emporium.
Oh, Peas & Pickles, how I love you! While living across the street at the St. George, you saved me from being completely broke, being thirsty, falling asleep, and hunger pangs.
So, I've only been to the one in Brooklyn Heights, and let me say, it was great. The employees are nice, it's always open, and the produce is, dare I say it, pretty! Plus, they usually have snackage you wouldn't find in most convenience stores, such as chocolate covered sunflower seeds. Plus, they had real food there, which was great for those nights I got in late and needed something to eat, only to find the fridge was empty. So, yes, Peas & Pickles wins at being awesome.
