Wish their was a Pearl River Mart in L.A !
I had heard about this place when I was planning my wedding- lots of brides buy stuff online from here. When I saw the store during a tour of N.Y I knew I had to go inside! Such great prices!! I bought tin containers for camping & lunch, Chinese checkers, chop sticks, an air mail zip bag I'd been eyeing at some trendy shop, a shopping bag that had foldable wheels ( $14) & who knows what else but I guarantee you it made me happy to buy it!
Great place for souvenirs & gifts!

Holy Bruce Lee this place is awesome! My friend dragged me here so she could get coffee mugs with lids for her hubby as a present and we were pleasantly surprised to find that this place has two stories worth of utter fantasticness. It's like this store has taken every junk shop on Canal street and cherry picked the very best kitsch.

You can find everything from rubber snakes to beaded curtains, Jack in the Boxes, hot sauce, adorable tea sets, Russian dolls, Chinese slippers, mustache magnets, hanging lanterns, serving plates shaped as sharks (!!!), and a wonderful array of Asian sweets. Everything is pretty affordable as well. Great place to find an off-the-wall gift or a stocking stuffer. Definitely worth the trip. Just be forewarned, in the same kooky-fashion as its merchandise they close at exactly 7:20 p.m. and they will throw you out if you're there at 7:21. They don't play.

kind of a guilty pleasure I have.  2 stories of absolute hoarding goods.  the section of imported candy/food in the back of the store is awesome.  I always get the candied ginger or the dried mangos.  The bottom floor has a lot of stuff too.  It's hard to describe, but be prepared to walk around aimlessly for an hour and walk away with something you probabley don't need...

Pearl River Mart is unlike any store I've been to. It's really a great place to check out even if you're not in the market for anything they sell. The place is a giant dual level store specializing in Chinese items. So it should go without saying that everything is cheap and made in China as well. The first floor has lighting, decor, kitchen items (including a lot of dinnerware), clothing, and more. The bottom floor also has kitchen items and decor as well as toys, plants, fabric, and a number of other little tchotchkes. The store is surprisingly clean, well laid out, and spacious. If you're looking for discount items for your kitchen or interesting Asian items for your house then Pearl River Mart is your go to place.

This place is so cool.  I have traveled in Asia quite a bit and it is like the best of everything in a very interesting layout of a store.  The lighting section is very pretty and phantasmagorical.  This is like the best of Chinatown put into one spacious place.  I am impressed.

This past Saturday was the first time I had a chance to go into PRM (as opposed to just browsing the website). I almost died of happiness -- THERES SO MUCH CUTE STUFF!!! Everything from sushi sets, to kimonos, to Sriracha Sauce, to lamps and string lights, to 6 ft buddha statues.

Me and my BFF literally walked every inch of the store, piling our carts with goodies. I fully intend to go back and pick up a sushi set and a tea set (they had some gorgeous ones!) when I have a chance.

I walked out with the following:

-- 2 kinds of Pocky (Almond Crush and Strawberry)
-- 2 kinds of Kasugai hard candies (lychee and melon)
-- a set of Kasugai gummies (5 small bags of different flavors)
-- a HUGE bottle of Sriracha for $3.25
-- a small jar of Huy Fong Chili Garlic Sauce
-- rice paper frog lamp (for my other BFF who was decorating her son's room in a frog theme, and it was 50% off!)
    -- Absinthe mints
-- dice cube tray - dinosaur bones (for my dino-obsessed friend)
-- cute card printed on bamboo
    -- Pretz biscuit sticks
    -- lucky cat chopsticks

I could have bought about 1,000,000 more things but my debit card protested and said "WTF you want to eat this week, right?"

At any rate, any store that sells pocky and Kasugai is A+ in my book.

Although Pearl River seems like a touristy trap, it actually has a lot to offer. I just got my mom a nice wool shawl here to go with her qipao so she doesn't have to suffer from the cold!

They also have other oriental items such as home decor, accessories, clothing, etc. It is a big place with tons of products. Glad I came by!

An awesome Asian store. A one stop shop for so much stuff and it's even decently priced, despite being outside of Chinatown. Definitely stop by as a break to your SoHo clothes shopping.

I recently went just for stationery. They have cards, specialized design paper, origami paper, etc.

Downstairs past their indoor waterfall, they have all kinds of kitchen goods. They also have an extensive lantern collection, which is a really cheap way to decorate a space. The first floor has a lamp selection.

And if you're famished, they have a small section for Asian foods.

Great Benriner Mandolin selection! Also, found out Bruce Hornsby's song "Mandolin Rain" was not about a dude slicing onions on a mandolin with great skill and speed and style even while having to deal with his eyes raining tears from the onions. Hey, that's the image I had in my head. Can't explain why. It is, I guess, just The Way It Is.

I'm a huge fan. This store is a wonderful mix of Asian goods, groceries, Fred-Flare-style novelty items, and small homewares (lights, wall hangings, dishes, cooking utensils). My favorite section is the dishes/homewares...over 100 beautiful tea pots, a billion varieties of chopsticks and tons of delicious tea. This is HANDS DOWN now my new favorite place to buy presents, there is literally something for everyone here.

I love coming to Pearl River Mart. It's usually the first place I go to finding cheap affordable kitchenware. Sure I can go to Ikea, but it's not easy to get to or Bed Bath and Beyond and overpay for the same items I can get here. Most of the kitchenware items I've purchased such as my recent wok purchase, has exceeded my expectation. Also, they have aisles of cute little kitchenware such as the tomato, pepper, onion, lime and garlic savers. Love it!!
Located in Soho, this chinese department store has 2 huge floors filled with anything from clothes, household items, food, books, medicine, furniture, gift items, etc. You can easily lose track of time just looking around while filling your basket up with things you didn't even need but couldn't resist buying.

This place is pretty interesting with their merchandise and displays.
I agree with Athena, although it looks like a "toursity trap", there's a number of things that one may want or "need".
I love to see the Oriental designs of the fabrics (I'm a sucker for the silky gold designs). The paintings and scrolls are great for home decor as well.
This store is really organized and easy to navigate, though you might get diverted and drawn toward other merchandise that pleases your eyes. Be careful not to bump into anything while walking around!
The prices are okay, certain things are a bit much, but this is a SoHo store afterall.
Pretty cool place, especially for Asian decor.

This place is a junk store.

If you are a poor udergrad and need some mass-produced crappy lights and fake chinese dishes to outfit your dorm -- have at it.  But for the rest of us you can do much better elsewhere because the quality of the products here is rock bottom.

Just to provide one example: I have a couple of small Chinese lacquered vases but had lost their little stands after four moves.  So I went down to Pearl River and eventually found them on the second floor.  I was wiling to pay for nice ones but the only kind they had were $3.50 a piece, and obviously of not very high quality.  Well, once I got home to take off the sticker the adhesive pulled off the wafer thin varnish exposing the cheapy wood, the drainage holes are completely off center, and they stick to my vases!  In short, they are complete garbage.

Pearl River sells a lot of plates and cups that are made to look artisinal but of course they are just manufactured in a sweatshop somewhere in China.  The whole place is just so fake and cheap.

  • Review from Joan R.

The Pearl River Mart is a treasure trove of miscellaneous charming Asian knickknacks and gizmos a plenty.

Every time I walk into this place I'm reminded of the scene in The  Little Mermaid when Ariel sings about the whozits and whatzits galore that rests in her cavern of wonders. While that little red head was unsatisfied with her collection of  thingamabobs, I'm convinced that she would never had grown legs if she had her own underwater Pearl River Mart.
"Sorry Prince Eric, I have a hoard of awesome reasonably priced stuff under the sea, and I don't feel like losing my voice to a guy who needs a crab to convince him to kiss me." Seriously, reasonably priced stuff before bro-hos.

Honestly, there is an enormous collection of cool-ass things in this store. There are chic clothes, paper lanterns, fat Buddhas,  sexy Buddhas,  paper dragons, you name it they got it! They have the best quality of Chinatown goodies in one  giant store of wonders. Like I mentioned before, their items are very reasonably priced. Their teapots are as gorgeous as the one's they sell in Teavana but like 90% cheaper. I'm not good at math so the numbers may be off, but just get the message that its cheaper than other brand named places.

Go up to the 2nd floor (which over looks the 1st floor) and you can order tea to go or have them make it for you. The 2nd floor is like a little tea shop that I imagine you finding in Hogmeads ( a town in the magical world of Harry Potter, you sad Muggle). It has glass jars of loose teas, herbs, and dried flowers used for tea.

My friend and I decided to take a break from browsing to order french pink rose tea, which has the function of strengthening the liver as well as relaxing the bowels. I believe it only cost $7 to brew us a pot of rose tea, and it was very exciting to be drinking the juice of rosebuds.

    TIP:
Come here for unique gifts for others and for yourself
Come here to waste a couple of hours to browse
Come to the 2nd floor to have a pot of freshly brewed tea.

Tho I'm ever proud to be an American, I sometimes think I was born into the wrong culture, as I have a very strong penchant for all things Asian: ThaiChineseJapaneseIndonesianKoreanMalaysian food, Eastern philosophies, design aesthetics from simple Japanese brush paintings to elaborate Thai temples, Mandarin jackets.  Everything, really.

Pearl River Mart just serves to confirm further my theory that perhaps I should have been Asian.  Not living in NYC, I've only had the opportunity visit PRM twice; but each time I felt like a kid in a candy store.  PRM is like an Asian version of Urban Outfitters, but fewer clothes and more accessories and housewares.  Everything is either pretty, or cute, or fanciful, or whimsical, or all of it rolled into one: embroidered slippers, silk pajama sets, artfully painted chopstick sets, teapots, recycled-material shopping and lunch bags, rhinestone jewelry, wooden platform flip-flops, grapefruit preservers, glass salt and pepper shakers, Pocky, Botan rice candy, seaweed crackers...

PRM is a super fun place to browse, and even more fun for picking up gifts (for loved ones and yourself!). You could spend hours in here.  Trust me, I know.

Traditional Chinese clothing, dinnerware, novelties, medicine, musical instruments, kitchen cutlery, incense, a few assorted martial arts weapons, gadgets, music, artwork, furniture, statues, lighting, dry groceries, tea, potted artificial plants, dolls, shoes, slippers, robes, umbrellas, tableware, tapestries, shower mats, curtains, window shades and blinds, home decor, posters, water fountains, fans, toys, masks, pillows, sandals, tea pots and tea sets, noodles, bath robes, books, rice cookers, and some other stuff.

Most of it is on the cheap.

I love this store.  There's so much to look through.  They have clothing, stationary, food items, books, souvenirs, bags, toys, music, etc.  They have a kimono section, show section, silk section, etc...  They carry Asian grocery snacks.  They have frozen and dry snacks.  I was looking for asparagus biscuits.  I use to buy them in Japan all the time, but I did not see any.   Some of their key chains at Pear River looked exactly like the key chains, I've purchased in the hotel gift store, I use to go to when I traveled to Japan for work.

There's a lot going on in this store.  If you are a tourist or a resident, you must go.  There is a lot of creative and unique  gift ideas.

    Price: $1 up.
Highlight: A great place to take out-of-towners

    Yes I need a kaleidoscope.
Yes I need a sequined windmill.
Yes I need good luck bamboo.
How can I get a plastic figurine shaped like an open carton of milk and not get a clock shaped like a cat?

I really like this place. It is like a general store for things you don't get in the general store on your block. We left with some sweets labelled in non-English, Black chocolate, some Hello-Kitty like stationery (my cousin's souvenirs for her friends), 2 slippers (a regular request from my non-Asian grandma finds them extremely comfy) and some canned iced tea.

Things I would come back for: the blinds, bamboo (which come in all sizes), sweets/general treats to try, general apartment stuff, just general inspiration.

Another great place to take out of towners. My teen cousins - male and female both liked it.

Need a lamp? Need an apron? Need some bamboo? Need a gong? Need wooden sandals? Need a tea set? Need some window blinds? Need a new wind-up toy? Need a laundry Hamper? Need some spicy ramen? Need a kimono?

Then go to Pearl River Mart.

It's more an experience than a store. I take visiting friends and relatives here just to give them a good laugh. But they inevitably end up leaving with 2 or 3 souvenirs as a bonus.

Some of the stuff is pretty cheaply made (okay, most of it is pretty cheaply made) but it's all so inexpensive that you can afford to replace it when it breaks after 6 months of use like I did with a wall-mounted lamp I got at Pearl for $20.

Go to Pearl River Mart with an open mind. You'll find something to buy. And you'll be back. I promise.

This is lazy-man's China town.  If you're not in the mood to trek around China town into tiny stores or maybe you just want to avoid the fishy smells of China town but really need a tea set, come here. Plus it's in Soho, so you can shop for non-Chinese stuff as soon as you leave.

Asian stuff galore... candy, clothes, stickers, stationary, NY souvenirs, knick-knacks, pens, tons of tea pots, plates, etc.. Mostly decent prices. The food aisle with all sorts of ramen is a little more expensive then a regular Chinese grocer, but perhaps it's the convenience that makes it better.

The Mart is tight. The only things I've actually bought here have been a PLAIN (no logos, no ruffles, no buckles, no trim, no bullshit) petite burgundy cotton tote bag for $1.95 and a panorama sized post card of the New York City skyline for like 40 cents. But just walking into this lofted space of curiosities, furnishings, and hard core PRC issued clothing is always a treat, evocative of entering much fussier and higher priced gift shops in San Francisco's Chinatown.

I think the secret weapon of this shop is its draperies and floormat department, which has hard-to-find bamboo, grass, and wood blinds for a range of prices, many of them dirt cheap, especially when at 50% off (but measure well, because sales are FINAL). Urban Outfitters would probably resell this stuff for a 500% markup if it could. Floormats are equally various in size, material, and construction, and are all rolled up and ready to carry right out of there.

Otherwise, it's just a comfort knowing that IF I wanted old men's rubber sandals, cotton nightshirts in bulk, plastic dishware, yards of borderline hideous chinoiserie fabric, strings of paper lanterns, furry journals, or pastel plastic tea sets, I would certainly find them here.

It's like a Chinatown department store that has just about everything but prepared food -- for white people. No offense.

I was a bit surprised when I walked past -- amongst all this upscale shopping is a Chinese goods store -- huh? So I stepped in and was still confused. Some of the items seemed legitimately priced for what the items were, all the staff were Chinese (to make this place authentic) and the quality of the goods was actually pretty good (I was examining the knot-buttons on the qi pao). Then there's the 'Asian' stuff to decorate your apartment or party with an oriental theme: paper fans, katanas, ramicans/bowls/painted porcelain, gaudy Buddha figurines, paper mache masks -- it felt very weird.

There's two floors chock full of 'Asian' and a small tea shop upstairs that looked un-staffed since there weren't any customers up there. Kind of fun to walk around, but I don't think I'd buy anything here. I'd assume I'm getting ripped off since the store has to pay SoHo rent and will need prices to keep up with that.

    This place is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge.

Three floors of all the asian, without the literal asia. When you walk in you're greeted with women's clothing, slippers, girls clothing, a nice assortment of imported foods and drinks, chopsticks, as well teatime accessories, am miscellaneous items of delight and glee. On the bottom floor, or I suppose you could call it the basement, is an array of randomly displayed rainboots, knickknacks, and toys. And on the top floor a few larger times scuttled about.

As prevalent by other reviewers, the prices are great. Everything is relatively inexpensive, even without the context that you're currently in one of the priciest cities in the world, and it's all very affordable.

Just a word to the wise though, if you're lady and you're here with your significant other, be prepared to hear a lot of groans and 'hurry up, are you done yet?'s. This place will suck you into a tsunami of savings and wonder. (too soon?)

Not just for tourist and sinophiles. It's a great place to get traditional Chinese wedding items like decorations, bedspread and the umbrella.

Tons of cookware. Clothing. Fabric. Tableware. Stationery. Books. Cheesy toys and yes....Bruce Lee. He took down put down Chuck Norris!!!

Prices are great. Their online store, I feel reflect what you can buy at the brick and mortar location and not just strictly online purchase. I called up and asked if they had my snazzy tiffin and they sure did.

I BELIEVE that this place had transcended from the location on Elizabeth street then to Canal/Broadway and to it's current location. I think they used to  also have a second location on Grand street and Mott. Ah crap I'm showing my age.

Staff seems friendly but it never hurts to communicate in Cantonese.

The Pearl River Mart is by far the greatest store in Chinatown. You can find everything from fabric, to beauty products, to tea sets. This place is a great shop if you need to decorate an apartment, get an interesting gift for someone, or just to look around. They have some really great finds in here, from mugs, lanterns, curtains, clothing, snacks, candy, ummm the list goes on. It's pretty reasonable pricewise too and can basically fit anyones budget. It's one of the most fun stores in NYC and awesome prices. (An NYC must-do as far as i'm concerned.

This store reminds me a lot of some of the best stores in Chicago's Chinatown. They have both higher quality stuff and some of the cheaper, less-high-quality stuff, all under one roof! Yes, it's a little touristy, but even for the non-tourist, there are some cool finds.

The store includes lots of accessories, some Asian food finds, housewares, and lots of other stuff in between.

Yeah, I was too lazy to drag a 6-year-old all the way to Chinatown. I admit it.  This was an easy hop from our hotel in Chelsea, so this is a great place to blow $20 on fun souvenirs.  I could have easily spent two hours here, and even though I've seen similar stores in San Francisco's Chinatown (with exactly the same items too), this was a bit edgier.

I walked out with a little coin purse for $4 that was made out of recycled plastic that had cat butts on it.  YES.  A little lunch bag made out of recycled plastic that had colorful robots on it.  YES.  Two miniature disco balls.  YES.  For a $1 each, sequined hand fans.  YES.

Pearl River Mart, me love you long time.

No matter what time of year it is, Chinatown is the place to get a great deal on all kinds of "stuff" from pots and pans to plants and Chinese specialty items. But hands down my fav store is Pearl River Mart Inc, partially because I don't have to troll all around Chinatown looking for all the things I need - everything I could find there is housed in the three floors making up the Pearl River Mart.

The last time I was there I discovered the yummiest ginger candy, and picked up some jasmine tea and a Chinese lantern to spruce up my bedroom. Then I headed downstairs where I scooped up some sweet dishes on the cheap. I also scored some really cool chopsticks that take the work out of using chopsticks. Everything was pretty much priced to sell, and while the staff isn't all that friendly, I didn't expect them to be, after all it is the outer edges of Chinatown.

I really love this place. It has most adorable Asian novelties items, bags, clothes, shoes, lamps, and beautifully crafted ceramics. I love ceramic tea cups, tea kettles, sake bottles, porcelain bowls and plates, especially those earthenware that resemble real purple or green crystals, so alluring! I know many had already post about this place, but I just can't help it.

They also sell miniature Money Tree in the basement. In that instant, a funny thought cross my mind: what if it can produce real money, like in Sims? What if?... I also check out their Lamp section. I was blown away by the varieties of simplistic oriental lamps PRM has, I never knew a light inside a take-out box can be so lovely.

If you spend more than $50 (like I did today), you will also get a free calendar in either rabbit or fish: rabbit for Year of Rabbit 2011, or the beautiful carps that look like koi swimming in river stream as the main calendar background. Not that it matters, but free giveaways always make me one happy customer. I would definitely go back for more!

They have everything you want! You will spend. You will find something useful that  you didn't even know you needed-like tiger balm in a patch, Turkish coffee pots, and hello kitty marshmallow candy. It's really an interesting place. Reasonably priced place if you are looking for housewares & kitchen items. It's also one of those places that when-you-see-it-get-it-or-it's-gone-forever.

Most of the reviews here reflect how awesome and amazing Pearl River is. Heck, I live in Chinatown, on the East side, and I still walk there whenever I need anything for my apartment. However, I just want to clarify that there are actually four floors. The basement is mostly household goods and beauty supplies and toys, the first floor is clothing, lamps, material, gifts and books, there is a "tea balcony," and there is actually another floor with furniture, room dividers, swords, statues, and fancier qi pao than they have downstairs.

I'm torn.  There's part of me that laments the fact that Pearl River Mart has brought Chinatown tchochkes (read: crap) to the masses who think Chinatown is too far away.  Now you can go to Soho for paper lanterns, silk pajama pants, and Bruce Lee posters.  Oh joy!

On the other hand I love how it's an alternative to Crate & Barrel for basic kitchenware and cooking utensils.  So now I can avoid all the gawking tourists in Chinatown...only to find them here.  Let me rethink this one.

It's 2 hours of your life you didn't know you could spare, looking at paper lanterns and the likes and saying "hmm which print of origami paper should I get" when you know damn well you can't read the instructions anyway.   OF COURSE I'm throwing this miniature 2 inch set of colored pencils into my shopping basket.  Don't question my needs!

Later in our hotel room, in the wee hours of the nite- we're chompin on Shrimp Chips, Japanese Rice Crackers, Coffee Beat Candy, Hi-Chew,  and trying to fold a stupid piece of pretty paper into a Giraffe (or a candy cane- I had to justify my end result), all thanks to Pearl River Mart.  If I lived in NY, I'd easily accessorize my place w/knick knacks, furniture and kitchenware from this place.  Me want Pearl River Mart in Bay Area!
