Hello, my name is Gwen and I'm a vegetarian. *waves*
Though I'm not vegan, I still support vegan places. While I can't commit to the entire vegan lifestyle, I love visiting places that always keep the welfare of animals in mind. I think my issue is that I love cheese too much.
I've been wanting to come here since the day it opened, and today was finally my chance. I cajoled Brandon V. into accompanying me to my first visit. He was considerably less excited than I was. Sorry, B.
We ordered a large half and half pie (him - peppers, me - garlic) a bottle of water (me) and an Izze natural soda for him (score for Izze soda!).
Is the crust here whole grain? I'm not sure. It tasted that way though, and it was really good. I'm only recently picky about sauce (I used to work for Emma's Pizza and it ruined me in a good way), and the red stuff here seemed divine. Mmmm, flavorful tomato mana.
Cheese. Ok, I'll admit that I could tell that the (I'm guessing) soy product subbing for cheese wasn't. But it was close. It was mild and seemed texturally right, except it didn't stretch. But I'm guessing that most of us aren't expecting a twin to mozzarella. The "parmesan" shaker on the table tasted nothing like parmesan cheese, but holy cats, it was still really good. There was a distinct nuttiness, which actually worked, and the texture was spot on. Peace 'o Pie, where do you get these wonderful things?
The price was average for a typical gourmet pizza place.
I think the key here is to walk in without expectations of the kind of pie like you'd see at Emma's, Sweet Tomatoes, or even grease-master HiFi. I suggest tasting Peace's flavors and trying them on their own merit. I think you'll find it great, but also a little tastier when you take into account how environmentally and animal friendly these guys are. I'd support them out of principle, but they make a decent pizza, too.
I'll be back!
Peace o Pie is pretty ok. I'm not going to lie, as much as I grumbled about TJs I was kind of sad to see it go - I mean it just fit with the neighborhood. I was happy to know that another vegan pizza joint was going in and hoped that the food would at least be on par with TJs (not exactly a hard feat, but you know).
When Peace o Pie first opened the "gourmet" messaging kind of threw me a little bit - I mean isn't this Allston? Now we have gourmet pizza and (I kid you not) people with baby bjorns dining at our local shops. Ok, changing face of the neighborhood...
A vegan colleague was absolutely gaga for this place from day one. After some hemming and hawing over menu ingredients I decided to call for a take out order.
I was really happy to be greeted by a very pleasant, kind voice on the other end of the phone who knew the ins and outs of the menu and even went so far as to read me the ingredients on the daiya mix so I would know whether I could have it! (FYI for those with nut/seed allergies, daiya does have some coconut oil in it but is otherwise largely allergen free). I totally appreciated the patient gal kind enough to read me ingredients and make sure that I could order without worry.
The boyfriend and I got an order of cheesy bread (I think this might easily be the best thing on the menu, omnomnom), and a small cheese pizza with mushrooms.
Truth be told I really wasn't so sure about the daiya cheese at first. I kind of like the gross saltiness of vegan rella and follow your heart. The tomato sauce at this place is awesome though - totally homemade, very hearty, and really tasty.
My boyfriend, native Wisconsin-gent that he is takes his cheese very seriously. He was quick to tell me that the daiya was the absolute best vegan cheese substitute his omni-heart had ever tasted.
Overall our pizza was ok - not mind blowing, but decent enough for an evening meal. Not that I'd necessarily want to pay $16 for a pizza again, but for a once in awhile treat it's ok.
I did notice, kind of weirdly, that the pizza cools off very quickly. We had to microwave ours already by the time we got home. Even with a reheat for some reason it was cooled in a matter of moments (which is good b/c faux cheese, when first heated, will be ridiculously steamy). I had some leftovers the next day - sadly they didn't really hold up that well - so tasty when fresh, kind of gross after some time in the fridge. This is really what's holding me back from adding that extra star - I know it sounds weird but I love love love cold pizza. Not being able to enjoy cold pizza leftovers is kind of a downer for me.
At any rate, I'll be back to try Peace o Pie again. I have high hopes that there's at least one pie on the menu that can live up to my cold pizza expectations. I'll update accordingly.
*Oh, I should also note, if you're allergic to peanuts like us that the signature dessert here is a peanut butter cinnamon roll. The kitchen looks pretty clean, and as I said they were great about our allergies. I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again - I felt pretty safe.
If you decide to have your birthday party at Peace o' Pie on a Friday evening, be sure to invite plenty of people that you don't particularly like, because they'll show up and not get seated for 2 hours, guaranteed.
I suppose the unbearable popularity of Peace o' Pie (hereafter referred to as PoP) is well-deserved, nonetheless. It's pizza that manages to be vegan without having an identity crisis. The crusts are crisp and bubbly. The vegan cheese is a marvel of modern technology, oozing over cushions of dough in hot salty tongue-scalding globs. And the faux almond-meal parmesan seasoning is like dandruff from heaven.
But none of the pizzas was spectacular enough to justify the 1.5 hour wait. (Granted, this was a Friday night, and I was in a party of 12 or so. PoP only has enough chairs/tables/cooks/oxygen for maybe 8 and a half people.)
Also, I burned my mouth, and then a button fell off my coat. Three stars it is.
I'm vegetarian, not vegan. And I love cheese. I love Veggie Planet because they offer vegetarian pizzas with the option of tofu spread or regular old mozzarella cheese. I'm not into cheese substitutes. But guess what. Peace o' Pie sold me on the vegan pie.
We were driving home from the Cape, and we needed to stop at Whole Foods on the way home, since the cupboards were pretty bare. But we were hungry, and we all know that grocery shopping while hungry is a bad idea. We threw around many options, but ultimately decided we'd head over to Allston to see if we could get a taste of this vegan pizza.
The place was bumping. We were lucky enough to score the last table, and then after perusing the menu for quite some time, we decided to order "The Classy" - a pizza topped with artichoke hearts, roasted garlic, and kalamata olives. The mister got an Honest Tea and I got a Maine Root Sarsparilla, and we each got a chocolate chip cookie to eat when we were done our pizza. Except he got too hungry while waiting for the pizza, and he ate it before it even arrived!
The pizza took a long time to get to our table, mainly because we got there shortly after they opened and they had a LOT of pizzas to cook. But when it arrived, it looked just like a real pizza. And it tasted like one too! I mean, the cheese wasn't totally cheese-tasting, but it was fairly convincing. It passed my cheese test. The crust was wicked good, and the sauce was fine. The toppings were all fresh and good. And after I was done my two pieces, I ate the cookie and enjoyed that as well.
So yes, it's a bit pricey (about $30 for one medium pizza, two drinks, and two cookies), but they use quality ingredients and at least you know you're supporting something positive. Plus it doesn't have any remnants of that dirty, greasy old vegan pizza joint that preceded it.
I really enjoyed TJ's, so I came to Peace 'o Pie very skeptical of the idea of "gourmet" pizza. I like my pizzas plain and simple without fancy stuff overwhelming the flavor. I have to say that I was very impressed with their pizza. I got a large "Fresh" pizza, which was sauce, Vegan Gourmet cheese, pesto, broccoli and onions. The sauce was delicious, the pesto was great, and the other toppings were good as well.
I would give Peace 'o Pie 5 stars were it not for the price. A large pizza was 18$ and while filling, I feel that's pretty expensive for a pizza. The toppings were also sparse and the cheese didn't even cover the entire pizza.
As far as the ambiance goes I liked the feeling of TJ's more, but I like how Peace 'o Pie has more sitting room with tables instead of booths. I do agree with one commenter who mentioned the lack of animal rights literature. I liked that you could always find a pamphlet about something at TJ's, or the most recent anarchist newsletter. Peace 'o Pie definitely caters to the more yuppie-ish, upper middle class vegan set.
I asked the owner if he plans to do a buffet, and it's not in the works for now. I'll probably go back to Peace 'o Pie every now and again, and I'm sure if they do a biweekly buffet I'll be there rain or shine as I did at TJ's. Peace 'o Pie definitely has good service, they know how to make a good pizza, and I feel like they have a better business mindset that will avoid the financial problems that TJ's was so burdened with.
Finally, I liked how clean the place was. That was the only thing that bugged me about TJ's, was how the booths always seemed to be covered in a layer of grime. They keep the tables at Peace 'o Pie very clean, and I'm sure it'll keep looking nice as time goes on.
Peace O' Pie is great: gourmet vegan pizza, calzones, and desserts at reasonable prices with friendly folk in an inviting atmosphere. The crusts are excellent (you have a choice of regular, whole wheat, or gluten-free), the sauce is flavorful, and both of the vegan cheese options are very good (I prefer the Daiya over the Follow your Heart). As for toppings, I strongly recommend the smoked apple sage veg sausage along with portabello mushrooms and sun dried tomatoes, but they're all great. Also try the cheesy breadsticks, and don't forget sweet maple rolls for dessert!
POP replaced TJ's. I liked TJ's, but Peace O' Pie is a huge improvement. POP has much better food in a much cleaner space with a much friendlier staff. I was sad TJ's closed, but I'm thrilled Peace O' Pie is now open. Delivery to Cambridge would be appreciated, as would more extensive beverage options (a beer would go very nicely with their pizza). POP is presently looking into both options, which is cool.
All in all, Peace O' Pie is a fantastic addition to the Boston-area vegan/vegetarian restaurant scene, and it's great for vegans, vegetarians, and everyone else alike! I look forward to enjoying POP's food frequently!
I went here on friday night with a friend around 7 PM. This place was happening. It was over crowded w/ people sitting down, waiting for food, eating, at the counter ordering... That's a good thing right? It's totally worth it. We ordered, it was told that it'll be 35 minutes and since there was no place to sit, we left to walk around and went back half an hour later, by that time, a table opened up and we snuck it and scored it. So our to go order became Dine In. Eric, one of the owners, stopped by our table and talked to us for about 2 minutes. He was gracious and friendly. I enjoyed my trip to Peace O' Pie and hope that next time it won't be so busy! :) I did walk by on a Thursday, the Gluten Free night, that might be less popular so it wasn't so busy then but I am glad Peace O'Pie is here and I look forward to returning here for more pizza!
I went here on opening night and it was excellent. You can tell the owners really care about the business -- unlike TJ's, ahem -- so you get great service and great food. The place has been entirely remodeled (using recycled materials) so it's clean and bright and feels spacious. Of course none of this changes the fact that I have to trek all the way out to Allston, but it's worth it. I suppose that's what bicycles are for.
Everything is made to order and they have a ton of options, such as different faux cheeses; regular, whole wheat or even gluten-free crust; and a crumbled tofu option coming soon. For those of us not really into fake cheese that's a great thing. I saw they also have calzones, which will be the next thing I order.
The prices are a bit higher than would be ideal but still not bad. $16 bought me a medium pizza which I shared with friends and had leftovers; the $18 large version is about the size of a new york pizza (of which a typical serving would be one-fourth). Considering the use of organic and specialized ingredients (fake cheese isn't cheap), I'm happy with the prices.
I will be a regular customer.
Peace O' Pie offers delicious, gourmet, vegan pizza. The staff is friendly and despite being busy on their opening day the service was quick and attentive. Try a pizza with the smoked apple sage sausage, the cheesy breadsticks, and the sweet maple rolls for dessert. Delicious!
POP took the place of TJ Scallywaggles and the difference is amazing. The food is of immensely better quality, as is the service and decor.
Peace O' Pie is fantastic for vegan and non-vegans. I ate across from a group of omnivores who were very impressed. POP also offers whole wheat, gluten free, and soy free options--so there is definitely something for everyone!
Peace O Pie is delicious. Kinda pricey, but tasty.
I'm not vegan, yet I really liked the pizza here. It was my first time trying vegan cheese, and I think I'm a fan. I had two slices with red sauce and the Follow Your Heart/Vegan Gourmet cheese. The sauce is zesty and not overpowering, the cheese is creamy and slightly sweet.
My vegan friend LOVED everything he got - medium EP pizza with Daiya cheese, breadsticks with FYH cheese and peanut butter maple roll. The pizza took quite a while to be ready (30 minutes?) so that was kind of a bummer.
There are only six or so tables, so it can be tough getting a table. There was some ballsy gutterpunk chick trying to convince some guys she'd gotten the empty table ahead of them, even though she just arrived and they'd already ordered. Up tha punx!
I have a confession. I'm a bad vegetarian who doesn't frequent vegan/vegetarian restaurants. Maybe because there aren't a ton where I'm from. I think I'm secretly just nervous about the food and atmosphere. But when Peace O' Pie opened, we hiked it over to Allston to try it out.
The space was very clean and I enjoyed the photos on the wall of food and the staffers. The staff was also friendly and helpful, a bit busy it seemed, for the amount of people at the restaurant, but it was their first weekend.
We were starving as we waited and I'm not sure what took the pizza so long. It was piping hot when it arrived, but i fought the good fight, burned the roof of my mouth and happily munched on my first pizza made with soy cheese. Loved the sauce, the toppings and the smokey flavor. Something beginning happening with the cheese on my second piece--it started to taste nothing like real cheese in flavor or texture and I got freaked out. I would opt for the more expensive cheese, but a large pie was already pretty steep.
While I'm not sure I'm a convert to vegan pizzas, it was a great first date with the soy cheese delight.
The crust is outstanding. The Daiya "cheese" is a bit weird on the constancy (weird creaminess), but still good. I'll be back.
I must say I was pleasantly surprised by Peace o' Pie. They fixed everything that was wrong with TJ's..... and the result is awesome pizza. The pizza is AMAZING from the crust to the toppings (get the apple sage "sausage"!). I also recommend the breadsticks. I personally prefer the Follow Your Heart cheese over the Daiya but I'm still glad they have both, as well has hard to find vegan items such as Dandies and Sjaaks chocolates. Definitely give this place a try!
A great vegan option, as this place is completely vegan. The pizza is great, and there are so many options, (especially in the Build Your Own pizza) section of the menu, one can be extra creative to get an excellent taste.
The Specialty Pies seem to have extra pazazz to them, as they both feature great ingredients for any vegan - smoked tempeh in the EP, and apple sage sausage in the MD.
The option for Daiya Cheese is also a plus. The Vegan Gourmet Cheese is really good, but having another cheese option in the Vegan world is amazing, AND tasty. The Daiya is worth trying if you get the chance.
Can I speak about the desserts available here?
YES! The Peanut-Maple sweet rolls are fantastic. Did I mention the Pumpkin Spice Rolls with vegan cream cheese frosting? Whoa. Party in your mouth. And the chocolate chip cookies. What a delight. Yes, I've tried them all. Do you think I would be that crazy to pass up such an amazing dessert opportunity?
Bottom line, really great food and worth the wait. Gourmet pizza should take an extra minute with tender loving care to get the extra gourmet taste. So good.
The place does look great. The people are pretty friendly, yet seem a little new and timid. I wasn't happy with the pizza I got (the EP). The tempeh lacked in flavor, but that's easy to improve. The red sauce was really good, the cheese was good (you know, for vegan cheese). I hope this doesn't deter people from trying it out, I'm just one guy with my own set of taste buds, ya know? Suggestions; maybe cook the pizzas either faster or at a higher temp, a 1/2 hour for one pizza is a long time. Prices are steep for the portions. I will keep going here and giving them my business. They're pretty new and have time to improve-and my review of the place will change for the better/worse as I eat here more.
This past week I made the short trip down to Allston to try Beantown's newest Vegan hotspot, Peace O' Pie.
To get there from where I live in the Back Bay I took a short walk to Kenmore Square and hopped on the MBTA's 57 bus. Fifteen short minutes later the bus dropped us off just across the street from the restaurant. Bright lights (environmentally friendly energy-efficient lightbulbs, I might add) and a shiny new marquee welcomed us from a hundred yards away. Upon walking in we were greeted by the friendly staff behind the counter (most of the food preparation happens back there in full view of diners which is always my preference) as well as the owner, who is obviously thrilled with the buzz surrounding his new venture. We took a seat at our table and perused the menu. Comprised of pizzas, calzones, salads, breadsticks and desserts, the menu is basic enough to fit on one page but complete enough to offer patrons a wide array of choices.
I started with a Maine Root Ginger Brew (my favorite and only carbonated beverage of choice) and decided to give the cheesy breadsticks a try. This is where i really began to get excited - Peace o' Pie offers (for a small and understandable additional cost) Daiya cheese. Anyone who has tried it understands my excitement and any Vegan who hasn't should listen up. This stuff melts better than ANY cheese substitute out there and tastes FANTASTIC. The thing that sets it apart from its inferior competitors, however, is that Daiya is made from tapioca flower. This is great news for anyone with food allergies and great news for Vegans like me who prefer not to eat soy. But I digress. The breadsticks arrived piping hot with a wonderfully spiced marinara dipping sauce and were gone in about four bites. These sticks were PHENOMENAL, and Peace o' Pies dough recipe is good enough to compete with even the most legendary brick oven pizzerias in Brooklyn or Manhattan. By now we were even more excited about our pizza.
Finally the main event - we decided to keep it simple, ordering a plain pie with the Daiya cheese. This slice of pizza had it all - a crispy crust baked to just the right consistency, a remarkable new cheese substitute, and a sauce that the chef had enhanced with a dazzling array of herbs and spices. I knew in one bite that this was a special pizza. The cheese melted and tasted like real cheese, the sauce was obviously spiced with care, and the crust was the real deal. For those of us who don't get pizza on a regular basis, this represented a change for our dietary landscape. This was, at long last, REAL pizza.
Vegan restauranteurs take note - the best Vegan pizza in the country belongs to Allston's Peace o' Pie. May they prosper and expand throughout the northeast and the country at a rapid rate. I think it goes without saying that as soon as I get back to town, I will RUN to Peace o' Pie to get another fix.
My husband and I loved Peace O' Pie. They did a great job redoing the space--it is clean and bright and the service is friendly. They make a great thick, chewy crust, and a flavorful yummy tomato sauce. We sampled both the whole wheat and the white crusts--delicious! The pizzas are rich and filling--one medium pizza + breadsticks filled us up, and we were taking home leftovers. And, contrary to the other review I read, I thought there was plenty of vegan cheese on it. We'll be back; I just wish there were easier parking in the neighborhood.
Unsolicited business advice:
1) Move your drink case to a place where customers can admire it and get tempted, so they grab one while they are waiting to order. You want that ginger ale to be tempting your customers up close & personal. You will sell more drinks, and as far as I understand drinks are a pretty high markup item for most restaurants.
2) Make the pastry assortment look more abundant. Put a little drizzle of colored icing on the cupcakes. Pile the cookies high. Arrange them attractively. You just might sell a few more.
Shockingly good. I did not like TJ Scallywag's. You can probably find my scathing review of it still, it's good stuff. Anyhow, I begrudgingly accompanied my girlfriend to Peace o' Pie, expecting the same filthy restaurant and disgusting looking food served by the same surly staff. I was completely wrong. This place is actually clean, looks modern, and the polite staff actually look like they've showered within the last lunar cycle.
I'm not vegan, and I have a general disdain for about 2/3s of the vegan food I've tried. The pizza here however was great. I actually went back for seconds and stole an extra slice from my girlfriend's pizza. The rolls were great as well, probably one of the better ones I've ever had in a restaurant. We had dessert too, and that was amazing. I actually enjoyed the meal and ended up stealing about half of the food my girlfriend had bought.
This the best pizza I've ever had (including non-vegan).
I started off with a salad that was great - fresh dried cranberries and lots of walnuts (a little too generous with the walnuts actually - they could save some money by limiting the number they put on). Then I got a medium-sized, regular crust of 1/2 of the Fresh and 1/2 of the EP (tempeh) with Daiya cheese on both sides. I'm always ordering confusing things but the people were very nice about it. The sauce, as many other reviewers said, is amazing. The Fresh has these big dollops of pesto on it which were so good. I ate half a medium myself and was very full afterwards. I'm really looking forward to going back and trying the wheat crust. The "default" crust is regular which was excellent.
I had a chocolate chip cookie for dessert which was okay - it was too hard for my taste. I took a maple, peanut butter sweet roll to go and had it yesterday - it was so delicious!
I don't think the prices are too high. The way I look at it is I got two meals for $20. Not bad!
One suggestion I have is to get new plates - when you're cutting on them, the base is too narrow and the plate kept flipping over to the side when I tried to cut my pizza. But perhaps I'm the only weirdo who eats my pizza with a fork and knife. And all the plates are new and look very nice so I feel bad about giving this (unsolicited) feedback.
Also - I think it's important to note that I am not Vegan ( I eat Vegan probably 5 out of 7 days but will try pretty much anything when dining out ). I know one reviewer mentioned the lack of literature on animal rights in POP but I found this to be a good thing. If you have a lot of that stuff around, you may deter some non-vegans from trying out this fabulous place.
Thank you!
I had time this past Saturday and swung by for a slice. I used to live in NYC and would get great alternative pizza at a place on the UES called Slice. I was excited to find a place that I could find vegan and at times gluten free options - even though I do eat meat I enjoy well made food.
The space from the outside seems very large, but when you enter it is a narrow space that is crowded with tables - does not leave much room for people coming and going to the counter to pick up or place orders. If you want to stay and eat there are about 6 tables so there is a good possibility to grab a seat. The day I arrived, sat around 2 p.m., it was full and there were about 8 people in line. I overheard the owner saying the good weather must have brought everyone out - so I assume this was abnormally busy or at least unexpected.
I wasn't that hungry and was alone so I was in luck that they sell by the slice -- there is a chalk board to the right of the register with daily specials. I ordered a slice of cheese and the special "the rogue" and they cheese was still in the oven so I waited outside - too warm to stand around and also a little crowded. I only waited for about five minutes and my order was ready - and they delivered it to me with a heads up that the cheese slice right out of the oven should not be eaten right away.
I ate the rogue slice special when i got back to the car - i needed some sustenance - i like the crust because it is thin and crispy and holds up to the toppings - the sauce is nice and the cheese has an interesting mouth feel.
After a few minutes I decided to take a bite of the cheese - it is very cheesy - and the mouth feel of the cheese is different from normal cheese, obviously, but if you are looking for an alternative you will not be disappointed. I am not sure if this type of cheese has any health advantages - but if it does, it is just another reason to enjoy a cheesy slice.
Prices of each slice start at 2.75 and go to 3.50, and the pies are between $16 and $19 depending on if it is Med or Large and the toppings. You can also make your own pizza. If you are looking for something else you can also find calzones, and side dishes that range from breadsticks, mesclun side salads, cookies, and cupcakes.
Overall I like this place and happy to see an eco-friendly business that caters to people looking for well made, tasty American favorites.
We had one of the medium pies with whole wheat crust, grilled veggies and faux sausage. It was delicious and plenty for the two of us. The crust had an amazing texture, the cheese was melty and satisfying, and I really enjoyed the "Parma!" parmesan substitute: nutty and salty. We started with a small salad (the vinaigrette was excellent) and finished with a fantastic sweet roll. Spotlessly clean, staff is friendly. There seemed to be a little problem with the credit card machine, and the counter staff forgot to give us our drink, but it's a pizza place, and the good attitude made up for the lack of practice, which I'm sure will get smoothed out over time.
I became vegan when I lived on the West Coast, and when I moved back to Boston, I knew that I would have a hard time finding quality vegan (or even vegetarian) restaurants. I tried TJ's (the vegan pizza place in this location previously), only once, and the food was okay, but nothing spectacular.
And now comes Peace O' Pie. And this is not the vegan version of Domino's, this is truly gourmet pizza, and the prices are comparable to non-vegan gourmet pizza places. The location is clean, the colors are calming, and the staff is kind, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic.
We got the cheesy bread first, it came straight out of the oven, served with a side of marinara sauce. Hot, doughy, with a slightly crispy crust... I didn't think it was possible, but this bread totally surpasses Bertucci's rolls. I'm as surprised as you are.
We also got a large pizza, the Fresh, with red sauce, onions, broccoli, and pesto, with a regular crust. The first thing I noticed: The cheese was melty. Melty vegan cheese?! Anyone who's tried vegan cheese knows how difficult it is to get it to melt, yet here it is. I asked how this was possible, and the guy (owner?) said, "practice." My theory: cooking the pizza at a lower temperature for a longer period of time... this would explain why it takes longer to make the pizza here than at other places. And if it takes 20 minutes to get the cheese melty, heck, I'll wait 20 minutes.
The pizza itself was great, really flavorful, and not greasy at all. Before we left, I got a few cookies for the road, and they're great, too. They taste homemade, good and chocolaty, but a little on the sugary side.
I wanted to try the peanut butter maple rolls, and the pumpkin cupcake, but they weren't ready by the time we left. The music wasn't on the whole time either, but everything else was impressive, so I'm willing to give some leeway; it's also their second week opened, so I'm interested to see how things change in the next few months. I'll definitely be back.
Holy moley... this place is good! Not to mention, it's a rarity. I ate here on the preview to opening day and had the "The MD" (I think that's the right name) with tempeh on it. The pizza itself was delicious, I tried it with the Daiya cheese which was good. I might stick with Follow Your Heart cheese in the future though because, after trying Daiya I've decided that Follow You Heart is my favorite pizza "cheese". No problem there; Peace O' Pie offers not only Daiya, but Follow Your Heart and another cashew cheese that I've never tried but hear is pretty good. I also tried a Peanut Butter Sweet Roll which was out of this world, to say the least. The customer service was fantastic and very friendly.
Basically, this place is a vegan pizza lovers mecca but also just a pizza mecca! I'm sure any non-vegan would love the product here. They also sell the Daiya to take home, and they are the only place in Boston where you can get it! Not to mention they are one of only two vegan pizzerias in the United States - a hot commodity for Boston :)
EDIT--- I change my mind after eating here a bunch and I'm a Daiya convert, I definitely like it better than FYH. :)
Best pizza in all of pizzaville - Allston-Brighton. The whole wheat with extra tomato and spinach was great. The place looks great too!
You'd never know this place was run by vegans, I can't believe TJ's is gone only to be replaced by this stale sorry excuse for a vegan restaurant. It's a boring place to visit run by boring phony people, the service is slow and gone are the very things that made TJ's a gathering place for animal rights people. No stickers or animal rights literature, no rock music playing, no Uncle Jack's, only boring pastel colors and high prices. I'm so sad to see TJ's go, it was more welcoming and felt like home to me as a vegan. I'll stick with the Grasshopper!
****Because I keep getting replies to my comment, I'd like to add that I waited OVER an hour for my $16 under-cooked medium pizza at Peace O' Pie. I also feel the need to defend TJ's, which everyone now is trashing, because though they had their faults they were on the cheap, their sauce, pizza crust and desserts were better, and they exemplified my idea of the vegan scene...****
I'm pretty sure this would be the best vegan pizza joint in Boston even if it weren't the only vegan pizza joint in Boston (as far as I know).
The pies are great, though don't come in expecting something to be waiting for you under a heat lamp. This is gourmet, son! That stuff takes time, so sit down, grab an organic soda or tea, eat some cookies, and converse with the other patrons.
The service is uber-friendly and fast (even on their first day things went smoothly), and you get to watch them put your pie together, if you want. You can also watch the crazy car/pedestrian traffic outside!
The prices are, well, gourmet, but that's completely warranted. You don't get top-of-the-line vegan ingredients on a hand-made crust for Domino's prices. And why the hell would you want Domino's? This is a sit-down, gourmet, date night, treat yourself kind of pizza joint, i.e. it's worth every penny.
Gripes? It's public transportation, walking, or bust. Union Square (as the area is called) is not the most parking-friendly area, so you might want to allot time for travel into your meal plans. Also, with only six or seven tables, the place fills up fast, especially with a lot of singles or couples taking up 4-seat tables. You may end up sharing with a stranger, though the crowd is cool so that's not necessarily a bad thing. Finally, there's no coffee...yet.
I highly recommend Peace O' Pie, for vegans and non-vegans (I'm not vegan or vegetarian) who are looking for a pie that isn't 90% grease and 10% crap.
I was pretty excited about Peace O Pie opening as I live with 2 vegetarians and I myself come from the land where we appreciate good vegan food (read: California). We went opening weekend and opted for the EP. The prices were a little steep, but I understand what I'm paying for. However, we did wait a half hour and maybe it's just me, but I feel like it was just a bit too long... I sipped on my Maine Root root beer as I waited because it's my favorite and they had it, along with a variety of other cool drinks. The staff was really friendly, but a little slow - I think they're just working out the kinks on how to run the place most efficiently. When the pizza came, we inhaled it. I REALLY liked the sauce and the smoked tempeh was definitely smoky. My first piece was excellent. My second? I think when the cheese started to cool, it wasn't as good...I'm going to try the gourmet cheese next time. Still, I dug it and I think other people into vegan food will, too!
I had the most DELICIOUS vegan chocolate chip cookies!! Flavorful, crisp and yet chewy, and even a day old they are Fantastic!
we went to peace o'pie on friday to celebrate my friend liz's birthday. at first passing grasshopper to go next door was hard. but boy was i in for a treat! the place looks great and the staff could not have been friendlier. the menu was small-ish but everything sounded amazing. we ordered the EP and the MD pizza for the four of us. the wait was a little long but totally understandable as they just opened. it was completely worth the wait. the pizza was unbelievably delicious!! cheesy and savory and mouth-watering. i'm vegetarian but a few of my friends are vegan, so i often eat vegan cuisine. this pizza was definitely as good if not better than regular pizza! they even brought my friend a 'happy birthday' cupcake. my husband and i split a cupcake and chocolate chip cookie and they were both fantastic. peace o'pie is a great vegan place. i loved it, will definitely share my good experience will my friends and go back again. :)
