Pazzo Gelato is my sturdy go to dessert stop whenever I am having dinner or going to a show in Silverlake or Echo Park. It's delicious, open late, and will give you the well-deserved sugar fix that your body craves after a good meal. It hits the spot and then some...
Pleasant flavor offerings such as the Almond Fig, European Yogurt, Pumpkin, Mascarpone, and Cinnamon gelato keep the lady friend and I coming back for more.
Pazzo's gelato is a bit creamier than most, (and I can't believe I'm saying this) but a little bit too creamy for my palate. Usually satisfied with a small size and cannot eat anymore than that.
Indoor and outdoor street side seating with great music playing in the background, usually along the lines of Deerhoof or Animal Collective. The owner and staff are friendly and very helpful, as they sample out flavors without looking irritated and make accurate flavor recommendations.
Rich textured gelato with consistent flavor selections, a prime location that is open late, and the use of quality ingredients makes Pazzo one of the best Gelato shops in LA.
Highly Recommended
Mmmm, nummay! :)
I am not usually one for sweets. I tend to prefer the salty and savory to the sweet any day, but since dessert was the craving of the evening for the partner in crime, I figured, why not, open your mind and your mouth, steph and stuff some gelato in it!
It was packed as usual and honestly, I think that is why I never really stopped in here before since lines and I don't have a groovy kind of love thang goin' on. But, it moved relatively quickly and the guys working here were super cool and super accommodating and let me sample a few different kinds of gelato. I finally decided to go with a combo of two, one being hazelnut and the other some sort of coffee one. Both were actually... really good.
I was definitely surprised and didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. And so, if the craving strikes again for some creamy, smooth loveliness in Silverlake, well, at least I'll know where to go! Enjoy!
Headed out this way for Intelligensia coffee.. and saw this gelato place right across the street.. ok, I'm in!
It's a tiny little place, but then again, most gelato places are. The lady behind the counter was very sweet.. and she answered any questions I had.... and she offered a sample of one of the ones I was asking "what's in it", without me even asking for a taste. Yay!
I got the salty chocolate and almond fig. The salty chocolate is a leeeeetle bit misleading, as it was not really salty at all. It has raisins in it, for a nice texture change-up. The almond fig tastes like almond extract more than actually a raw almondy taste.. and I'm not sure how they incorporated fig into it, because that stuff usually smells funny in an earthy/sweet way. But, I liked the idea of that combo. :) And it was good.
The texture was not as creamy as some other gelato I've had, but sure! I'd stop by again if in the area.
Oh, and the small size (where you can split two flavors in your order), is way more than enough. I could barely finish half of it.
Love, love, love it! I love this place so much I even stop here when it's cold out and I have to get my Pazzo fix in my heated car. I love the salty caramel, PB&J, Hazelnut, Pistachio, Almond fudge...basically I have never been disappointed with my order. They always change the flavors and the gelato is always fresh and creamy. They also don't look at you weird when you ask to sample things!
Solid 4 this time...
So after a taste test comparison, I will have to agree with Veronica R that the texture here at Pazzo is better than Scoops. Not a WHOLE lot better, but you can definitely feel the difference. And we know this by fact because we caught Scoops 10 minutes before they closed right before coming here to do the comparison. Yes, impromptu mini gelato crawl. Yay for getting fat. Oh, speaking of Scoops, it was finally a time Veronica and I had been to Scoops together after talking about it for A MILLION YEARS.
Dammit... I can't remember what flavors I had... oh... I had cinnamon and.... uh.... hmmm.... I'm totally blanking right now.
So while Scoops definitely wins on the creativity of flavors, I do have to say Pazzo edges out in terms of texture. Oh, and I found out there's a parking lot in the back.

They serve Intelligentsia coffee without the lines! I get a truly decadent iced mocha here.
The gelato is good too. No attitude when you ask for a sample! A great array of flavors, how can you not taste a couple each time?
As far as gelato goes... this is as good as it gets.
Equal to anything you ever had here or in europe.
I think I'm one of the few who think Pazzo is better than Scoops. Team Pazzo Por Vida!
I'm surprised by all the negatory customer service reviews because I come here all the time and always get smiles and nice chats from the employees. In fact, one of the owners - the cute freckled lady - once SANG to me. I think sometimes we forget that our servers are people too...remember the golden rule, homies!
That being said, I find my gelato experience to be most delicious when I mix a fruity sorbetto with a creamy gelato. Examples include:
chocolate and mango
strawberry and almond fig
pistachio and banana
coconut and chocolate and hazlenut and and and...oh god mmmmm
Btw, Pazzo uses fresh local seasonal ingredients and if you just want a little treat you can order a one-scoop baby cup. Also, the molten chocolate cake is an awesome dessert.
If yer on a date, share the Roman Holiday. Just do it.

I went to Pazzo and Scoops back to back so i can compare the two shops. In my book, Pazzo blew away Scoops. The ice cream here had a better texture and better flavor. Scoops may have funkier flavors but I prefer having the better ice cream
Cost: 1 scoop (2 flavors)
$3
I love you Pazzo Gelato!
I looooooove you...
I dream of your madagascar vanilla most...because it pairs well with nearly every other flavor you dream up. All of your coffee gelato flavors...and your fancy sorbets.
You remain my choice date spot...
(and i've been to scoops. it's good...but you still have my heart).
Best, unique nutty Pistachio gelato ever! My bf and I just finished eating dinner and just remembered watching Anthony Bourdain drinking the pineapple ice cream, chardonnay float as we were passing by Pazzo. After a quick illegal U-turn, we made our way into the store and ordered one scoop of pistachio, one pint of vanilla, and one pint of vanilla bean. YUMMY yum yum. The pistachio is to die for. We love the pistachio yogurt at Yogurtland but this is sooo much better. With real pieces of pistachio and a rich nutty aroma, this beats any pistachio anything I've ever tasted.
The two other vanilla flavors worked divinely with our chardonnay and we had dessert for the next two weeks. The staff is extremely friendly and the gelato here is definitely creamy, creamy, creamy.
Love all the flavors here! There are so many to choose from, I was torn. I have a bad habit of wanting to try every flavor but I knew better here. There was a line behind me and I didn't want to piss anyone off. Instead I tried four and they do the double-spoon tasting, one flavor per side. Good use of plastic spoons!
I was really craving tiramisu (my favorite gelato flavor) which they did not have, so I improvised with a mix of hazelnut and mascarpone. Very good combo. I heard that they also make trips to the farmer's market for their ingredients. This surely was the case with the strawberry sorbetto flavor. OMG. Amazing.
At first I was like $3.95 for a small?!? But it is huge. I could not finish it. You can fit two flavors in a small and I suggest sharing.
$5 minimum to use a credit card.
Can't wait to come back and try the other flavors...I just need to walk off this one first.
The gelato here is soo good! The workers are always friendly and pretty much encourage you to try samples of their gelato. My advice, get strawberry w/chocolate chip when its available (flavors change daily)! it's sooo nummy!
It's fine, I supposed, for snooty ice cream connoisseurs. technically, i mean, gelato connoisseurs. hey, i get it, you go to Italy, you try their stuff, you're stuck here and want a gelato flashback. that's cool...
however.
space is limited to just a few tables. there's a lot more attitude in giving out the flavors. i just feel like there's so much better going on at Scoops, at HALF THE PRICE (jesus, this place is expensive). i mean, come on. anyone who's frequented both places has to admit that you get way less bull$hit from the people behind the counter in wanting to try their product before shelling out the $5 for it. even if one place is technically *ice cream* and the other is *gelato*.
i don't care much about 'tude in the service industry when i'm going out. but if there is a direct rival in the same city where one place is dishing out better product with better service at a better price, someone should step their game up.
I've tried hard to avoid coming here knowing full well it could be my downfall. And really, having travelled in Italy how could this possibly compare with the real deal?!? It was finally the latest heat wave that drove me out of my hot/AC less apt and into the nice cool gelato shop. I don't even remember the flavors I got (one was chocolate and the other was creme caramel?) all I remember is that I completely inhaled them and was ready to fork over cash for a tub. I restrained myself, but now that I've gone down this gelato path I am doomed. Indeed...as good as one will get outside Italy and definitely worth the $.
Pazzo Gelato is a close second to Scoops for the best ice cream east of Western Ave. All the gelato here is amazing. It's really hard to go wrong no matter what you order. If they only offered vegan options they would undoubtedly be the champs.
One time I misunderstood what the employee was trying to tell me and mistakenly ordered goat cheese ice cream. I didn't figure it out until I was about seven licks in. It was pretty disgusting, but my date liked it so I gave it to her. I never called her again though. Anyone who likes goat cheese ice cream is no friend of mine.
Cuuute gelato place found in Sunset Junction. Uber hip interior, staffed by equally hip hipsters. There's a couple tables inside, but let's face it, you ought to be sitting outside enjoying the sun and eating your gelato before it melts.
The times I've been, service has been good, snappy and friendly, although the way the line is structured predisposes them and you to ordering asap. Now, if the gelato was better, Pazzo Gelato would snag an easy 4 stars. However, there isn't enough depth in the gelato here, and the consistency and texture seems to be a little off. (Sidenote: oh how I miss my Philly's Capogiro Gelato).
Pazzo's alright for filling you with average gelato in this cool little shopping neighborhood. As always, parking is pretty hairy in this area.
sooooo delightful, i just wish it didn't melt so fast in this heat!
i had an Almond Fig/Italian Vanilla combo cup. it was divine.
I've never been to Italy, so i've obviously never tried the real thing. What i have tried is the stuff served in places all over the city and this place tops all others!!! It's SO GOOD!
Peanut butter fudge... i know what you're thinking, peanut butter and fudge mixed - NO! It tastes just like the peanut butter fudge my grandma makes from scratch. Rich and creamy, just enough peanut butter but not overwhelming (you know when you feel like a dog who's just been given a spoonful of the pbutter and you can't stop flapping your lips... none of that).
I tried the cookies and cream, it was pretty tasty as well and the chocolate martini was yummy! I will definitely have to make this a regular stop for my gelato needs.
Hey there is enough reviews here to say it GOOD!.. Almond CHIP.. gots to try.. Baked Apple.. (tastes like it tooo).. I like the Coconut and Mango/Passion Fruit two scoops combo.. I feel like I am in the tropics.. Why go to a Baskin Robbins .. (they are ok) This place for some reason is always crowded ..right after I get my order.. lucky ME!! I truly hate lines.. especially the ones that have people wanting to taste of different flavors. COME ON.. and they take their sweet time deciding.. !! put them in the " I cant make a decision on anything corner" Parking on the street.. dont count on it.. but then I park in the back of the building.. dont know if Its allowed.. but who cares when I go there at 9:00 p.m. most of the businesses on the strip mall is closed. except Pazzo Gelato.. Moving to Malibu in the end of the year.. I know i wont have this quality GELATO there.. !!!
On my search for authentic Italian gelato that would bring me back to Milan when I first tried Italy's rich, creamy goodness, I stopped by Pazzo Gelato in desperation to rekindle those mouth-watering memories.
To my disappointment, Pazzo Gelato was not the place to rekindle any Italian gelato memories whatsoever. The hazelnut lacked that rich, nutty flavor and some times had pieces of unprocessed ice in it. Same goes for the pistachio. These two flavors can determine if the facility is serving authentic stuff and I've only had such luck up north in San Francisco (Naia).
However, I can say that Pazzo Gelato is WAY better than a lot of other popular gelato parlors - Al Gelato and Scoops (I hesitate to even mention this place as it is NOT gelato, it's ice cream, kids).
My search for gelato authenticity continues...
Recently introduced to the wonders of Gelato, this place is not only the coolest of the LA options, (given it's location, decor, and hip-tastic staff) but it's also the best of the LA options.
Pazzo Gelato makes their own product using only the finest and freshest ingredients. They can make custom flavors to order, and really do produce a better product than found at other Gelato joints around LA.
They also feature a full espresso bar, loose leaf tea & other gourmet items. The Gelato is the best and first reason anyone should visit.
Was able to find parking in the crazy parking lot behind the store. I hate this lot shared by several stores as the spaces are tiny and I have a sports car which you would think would sneak into small spaces!
Went in and only half of the display had any gelato or sorbetos ... none of them labeled. When they asked me what I wanted I said "don't you label your flavors?". Well, yes, but they were just setting up the display. Shouldn't this be done BEFORE the store opens? The owner or manager told me about 4 or 5 names.
I had the hazelnut and the mascarpone. The mascarpone was exceptional and I briefly thought about Giada De Laurentiis's visit to Pazza some years ago when she had a milk shake. I counted the potential calories in my head and dismissed that idea.
Great people watching from the many tables out front.
Parking available in the previously mentioned lot and on the street. While I was sitting there even I was stunned to see a meter mail going down the side street [Hyperion] on a Sunday giving out tickets. She was verbally arguing with passers by.
Beware Sunday parking.
This place is quaint and everything, but what is up with the attitude of the workers here? Why would they roll their eyes at a customer who wants to try a few samples before buying a giant thing of gelato? I thought the girl worker with the ugly scowl needs to check her attitude. She didn't make me or my friends feel welcomed at all and we kind of wanted to leave. But since we had tried 2 samples each already, we didn't want to be mean and just leave. So we got the 4 scoop deal for $5.50. She DID give us a lot of each flavor, but I can't even really tell you much about the gelato since the way we were treated stuck in my mind more than anything. =[ I won't be coming back here for a while, I am sure of it.
I usually drive out to silver lake when I want to have a healthy meal. There is the FIX burger "buffalo burger all the way," and a number of other options for my vegetarian friends. Some great coffee shops and so on, the problem is that in the middle of this somewhat health conscious community lies Pazzo Gelato...... Dumdumdum
Obviously I can't just walk by and ignore such a cute little place, so I always end up going in. And then the guy or girl behind the counter sees my eyes melting their gelato and starts force feeding me flavors, it's really all their fault. Of course I've tried to resist many times, but it never works.
While I think Bulgarini is a tiny tiny bit better then Pazzo, Bulgarini is way out of the way. The buttered brown sugar at Pazzo is amazing it's their best flavor IMHO.
It's freezingly delicious!!!
Cross streets are Hyperion Av and Sunset Blvd.
Opens daily from 11-11 w/ free wi-fi.
My friend took me here to try/yelp because he noticed I've only been yelping yogurt joints and cause Pazzo Gelato is supposedly the best gelato everrrr!! The best gelato place I've tried was Bellagio's Cafe Gelato in Vegas, so we'll have to see....
This little gelato store serves coffee, gelato, special beverages, and cookies. It's a chilly saturday night and this place is crowded! We tried a scoop of mango, blood orange, and chocolate chip. The mango was our least favorite cause it had this weird grainy texture for an after taste. The blood orange was amazing. If you like bloody oranges you'll definitely like this. It's really rich in flavor! The chocolate chip was sweet and creamy. I can't agree it's the best gelato, but compared to other gelato places I've tried, it's definitely better. I'll be back to try their other flavors. :)

~Ambience~
*As an after-dinner hangout (and I'm sure always), has a young settlement of hipsters on their Macs or just hanging over coffee.
*Nice people behind the counter, though seem to desire some revolution in their lives.
~FOOD~
*Affogato di Gelato: Quite a mouthful, although not the name they gave it (something that started with "pazzo" and ended in "-ato" I remember). It's your choice of 2 scoops of gelato, with a shot of espresso, all topped with whipped cream. I was curious if they would serve it in a bowl or a glass. They went for the bowl, though it could be a goblet if you so desired. QUITE a lovely shock to the after-dinner coma.
*Mexican Hot Chocolate ($3.75): I know, I know. Go to a gelato place for Mexican desserts? But I rarely see this on a menu, and I couldn't resist. It had the subtle cinnamon flavor I was craving. Yummy.
*Sampled: Mascarpone Orange--A totally unique flavor that's worth coming back for a full serving. European Yogurt Cherry--Another awesome flavor that requires a full scoop.
~The Bottom Line~
*A little more than gelato, in a place that's a little more than average.
So I got 'Inteligentsia' coffee here on a tip from my friend that it cost like half the price at Pazzo.
Sadly, my latte was coarsely foamed (think 16 year old working at a starbucks style), and did not taste anything like the magic of a true Intel cup.
Although the coffee was eh, what was even more horrifying was the service. Homeboy didn't even greet me, was pointing exasperatedly and wordlessly at coffee & prices when I asked a question (why? really? is it weird to ask the price of a latte? An item you are SELLING?), and looked at me like i was crazy for taking two seconds to sort through my money to pay.
I honestly felt so uncomfortable that I stopped mid sort to stare back at him staring crazily at me....where he then proceeded to sigh. I swear. No joke. He sighed. Literally. In my face.
Nothing makes me crazier than people that are so apathetic about their job that they treat people like garbage. I have to say though- the other punky guy behind the counter was sweet, and even he seemed appalled at his co-worker's behavior.
(By the way, I solemnly promise- I am not a priss about customer service, but this is one of my top 3 crap-o-la C.S. experiences. )
I'm sure their gelato is fine (it looked great), but Never Again.
Great variety of flavors. Gelato was creamy. I had a strange craving but i suggest you try it the Limoncello and Toasted Coconut.
Tartness + Creamy goodness = Bliss.
the worst customer service ever... I wasn't even greeted when I walked in the door. Instead I was rudely ignored by every employees.
I only walked into Pazzo due to the fact that it was only placed in Sunset Junction with no line.
Umm...I wonder why this place , nobody wanted to go inside.
After giving my chai latte request, no one want to work on it or even try to ring me up.
I walked out and headed over to Intelligentsia Coffee , at least they don't ignore their customer.
For your gelato craving-
Everyone head over to Scoops and you would get better customer service..... They even better ice cream favors
Nothing beats gelato places with different flavors each time. My only complaint is paying $5+ for three scoops of gelato, which are WELL worth the five bucks... I just wouldn't want to spend that much on gelato each time. But this place is definitely worth going back to time &time again.
Darn good coffee and darn good gelato!
After scouring all of LA looking for great gelato, I have found something suitable! It's not quite like the gelato one might find in the south of Italy, not like watermelon with chocolate seeds, not like the tart lemon gelato on a hot and sticky summer day, but it's pretty good.
Seating is limited but it's worth it just to get a couple of scoops and walk down Sunset.
Problem: I like to eat tasty, creamy, sweet things, but I don't like to be fat.
Solution: Pazzo Gelato's sugar free Chocolate Gelato. I don't know how they do it...it's either Splenda or witchcraft, but I wouldn't have even guessed it was sugar free. It tasted a lot like frozen SnackPak, which is definitely a good thing.
Also, the people there are quite nice and there is -- interesting art from local artists on display.
This is the kind of place Sunset Junction always needed. The gelato here is fantastic. Everything is displayed in a very appetizing manner. They have a full variety of flavors. Chocolates, coffees, fruits, vanilla. The staff is helpful & friendly. The portions are generous. They can pack two flavors into a small bowl and it's more than enough to get your fix.
The sidewalk seating area is very nice, very European. A few more Vespas scooting by, and maybe you could think you you're in Italy, . . . maybe!
I'm knocking a star off because the music was really inconsistent. At first, they were playing "soft hits" and Peabo Bryson was telling me he was going to "hold me in his arms forever." Then, almost on cue, when I mentioned that it would be nice to hear some cool jazz, some vibraphone jazz came on. Problem was, it was Christmas Jazz. Nothing like "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" in late June.
But, I know that's a small quibble. I've certainly had better gelato, but this is more than good in a pinch, and the location is good.
Life is a funny thing.
Just when you think you've manged to avoid the trends and follow your own path in life you find yourself sitting outside of Pazzo Gelato wearing your black skinny jeans and vintage inspired jacket smoking way too many cigarettes while drinking your green tea and eating your pistachio gelato as you skim though the latest issue of The Onion while simultaneously discussing which new indie album is the most blogged about (god I shouldn't even begin to describe that here) a strange thing happens.
What exactly happens shall remain nameless. And while it would be joyous to describe such an epiphany here you may be best served by visiting Pazzo Gelato and picking up your favorite flavor while reading the newest issues of The Onion.
I only sampled a few of the flavors, but wow! This place was fantastic. I tried:
- blueberry
- pistachio
- buttered brown sugar
All three were delicious. The blueberry stole the show. At 1:45pm the blueberry and a few other flavors were already almost out.
I might have a gelato problem. I can't stop reviewing gelaterias. I can't stop eating at gelaterias. I can't say no to a new gelateria. Not that Pazzo is new, but living a bit far from Silverlake I just don't get out there too often.
That is, until Sunset Junction. Gavril L. and I were spreading the Yelp love over the weekend and he pointed out Pazzo with rave reviews. He named a few exotic flavors and all I could do was wipe the drool from my mouth while thinking about them. Okay - that's it - we're going in!
After sampling a few flavors, my first combo was Pistachio and Cinnamon Graham. Considering i also have an addiction to all things cinnamon, the latter was simply *amazing*. And the overt sweetness mixed with the mild yet flavorful pistachio was absolutely perfect.
So perfect, in fact, that i had to go back the next day. Another friend who lives down the street couldn't stop talking about their espresso/gelato combos, and really I just couldn't stop talking about gelato in general. Flavor combo #2 - Mascarpone Ginger and Peanut Butter Chocolate Hazelnut swirl. Again, the perfect combo of giant and subtle flavors that had me licking the bowl clean.
I could do something for this gelato problem (like hit the gym 14 times a week), but with places like Pazzo around, who would ever want to give it up?
Gawd how could you explain the feeling when you first stick a spoonful of mango Gelato in your mouth from this place? You can't! As a wise man once said, " What we cannot speak about we must pass over in silence."
I simply love this place, it's ambiance, and it's products. I love the eclectic range of their Gelato. Flavors from pistachios to Jack Daniels, you will just find something that suits your palate. The joint itself is calming in it's own way. It's a nice place to relax in the outside patio and unwind after a long day at the office or school. Another big plus is that if you did not have enough sugar with their Gelato, then you can always buy one of their pastries. They have little colored sugar cookies, chocolate hostess -like cupcakes, and giant chocolate-chip cookies. DELICIOUS.
The one thing I would not miss about this place are the clientele. I still remember one in particular that I can't quite seem to forget. He had ordered in Dutch and when no one understood him he had the nerve to say," If I had ordered in Spanish you would of understood me. After he said that I thought to myself," If I would of told you to forfikig^i(f*ck off) in Esperanto you would of not understood me."
Ben G. forced me to eat gelato here. It took so much effort on his part to lead me over the threshold that I'm surprised he didn't just give up. After he forced me to eat the try two samples he forced me choose two flavors: limoncello and coconut. After he was done forcing me to eat all of my gelato, he forced me to remark positively on my experience and allude to possible return trips when I'm in the area. He's not currently forcing me to write this good review of this place, but he might as well be. Damn you Ben, and damn you Pazzo Gelato for enabling in my oppression by gelato!
The white nectarine tasted like white nectarine!
The cantaloupe tasted like cantaloupe!
The snozzberries tasted like snozzberries!!!
On the flipside, service by our scooper was really stinky. My friend ordered one of their "ice cream/cookie" combinations and we thought, "oh cool, gelato on a gigantic cookie. Rawr!" When we reached the cashier, he was like "uhm, do you want whipped cream and chocolate sauce on that? Or nuts?"
Why did the scooper leave out all these vital ingredients? Bad scooper. Awesome cashier.
