"I know the owners"
And they are awesome, you should get to know them too! They have another location in Potrero (thus the name) but this is my local and they all know Justice and if he ever gets loose I'll know exactly where to find him. It's pricey, but the dog/cat food is well researched for the health of your pet - they have variations of raw food as well and we've started doing a soju/small batch mix. And we've found some of the best toys ever here for hours of dog entertainment!
They even deliver if you live nearby!Listed in: My Neighborhood

If there's any neighborhood that makes owning a city dog a breeze, it's South Beach. And it's a good thing I live around the block from places like Pawtrero because I seriously suck at taking care of my canine.
Luckily, Shereen and Ray have been there to help me since day one. After I walked into this store a little less than two years ago with my dog biting my pant leg and me close to tears, Shereen could see that i had no idea what I'd gotten myself into. She promptly directed me toward a vet, a dog walker and even showed me how to clip the little critters toe nails. They've got everything you need to keep you pup well fed and happy. Raw food. Chew toys. Treats. Collars. Leashes. Nice dishes. And cookies (for your dog, not you, fatty.) -

This is my favorite pet store. :) Thanks for all your services. Prices are reasonable and I think better than PETCO in many cases. I have a kitten. So I can't comment on the dog products but for Cats, they have the best toys and my cat loves them more than the stuff I bought her from Amazon or Petco. Also- toys are much better priced. Nice staff and a funny experience.
Usually there are dogs running around and it looks like it's their favorite place :) -

It's unanimous...both my pups give it 5 paws. No, not because they get treats during every visit but because of the care and knowledge the staff and owners bring to the pet community. They are very knowledgeable, from pure breeds to rescues. Keep up the great work!

The owners are awesome. Huge selection of doggie stuff. I bought a seat belt, dog toys, treats, and raw frozen food here. There is another store in Potrero, but I like this location better.
Prices are pretty steep, but it's just because the quality of the products. We actually compared the prices in the store and in the internet and it's pretty much about the same. Nevertheless, I would encourage everyone to support your local store if they are just a few bucks more! -

I would give them 10 stars, 5 is not enough! My husband and I are new dog owners and were referred to go Pawtrero to get our dog food. The owner Shireen was in the store and was soooo helpful! Not only did she get us some amazing food for our new puppy but she also introduced us to a great vet and helped us get an appt last minute to make sure our new puppy was healthy when she came to us. Shireen literally went out of her way to make sure our first day with our new puppy was easy and gave us tons tips to help us as new puppy owners. She spent so much time with us. I am so grateful for Pawtrero and look forward to spending lots of time there with our new angel!

Wow! What a fantastic experience I had at Pawtreo Hill Bathhouse & Feed Co. This is THE BEST place to take your pets for food and great quality products.
I was fortunate enough to come to Pawtreo while Suzie, one of the owners was working. I was blessed with her abundance of knowledge as she guided me on what products to get for my new puppy. The staff member who rang me up was very enthusiastic and the entire experience was great.
If you have a pet make sure to come here!! The best in SF.
PS they also deliver. Check it out. -

I will never, ever feed my beloved cat subpar food again. My discovery of Pawtrero is directly correlated with my little Candy's better health and increased activity. The staff here is amazing and truly care about pet health and helping animals in general. And for premium food, the prices are not bad at all.
I love this place. -

Great quality products for pups here, and the staff is great!
Unfortunately, stuff here is pretty pricey. I found another pet shop that sells the Primal Jerky Chicken Nibs my pup is so fond of for $4 less than Pawtrero. That is a huge difference! Although my puppy pretty much will eat anything and everything (he loves the trash can!) so why do I even bother...
They are opening a grooming and spa shop next door so stay tuned. -

Pawtrero means a lot to me as one of my favorite finds in the city.
Quality products at its best here! My english mastiff suffered digestive issues and chronic diarrhea. My conventional vet told me it was probably Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis and that he may need his bowel removed. Luckily, I knew better and started trying different foods to identify an allergy. No combination worked and I was cooking a 9 lbs of fresh dog food a day.
I went to Pawtrero and they set me up with a great dog food that he is not allergic to and he is doing fantastic! Ray and Shireen know their stuff and love their four legged customers.
On top of that, they deliver! I go through lots of dog food and it is great not to go to the store weekly.
Don't think I could ask for more. Lots of love and caring has been put into this store and in turn, I love this place! -

If you are what you eat, same goes for dogs. So, I like to feed my dogs what dogs are meant to eat...raw meat (Primal). And I like veggies and so does Ponyo so Sojo's (veggie).
This store has great food and snacks and toys and great employees (Alissa). -

I'm here most Friday afternoons, purchasing my dog raw food.
Their selection of raw food is awesome. They have several different brands, and carry lamb, pheasant, chicken, buffalo, beef, turkey, and several others.
They have frozen pre-formed patties containing meat and vegetables - which I use. The also have a separate selection of raw meats that you can mix with Dr. Harvey's dry mix.
The ladies who own this place are always friendly, they remember your dog's name, and always greet your dog with a treat.
They also give you $5 off for ever $100 spent, and have a special with Primal Raw Food. (I think you get $5 back for every ten Primal items purchased.)
I like this place a lot, and would shop here even if a large corporate pet shop had better prices. Support your community, support small businesses, and support your pet by shopping here. -

Nothing more comforting than knowing that you can buy anything in the store with absolute peace of mind: Shareen and Ray hand select all doggie products and food using standards that seem to exceed our standards!
Another great thing... they welcome all dogs, even our reactive little Maltese. Oftentimes, Shareen uses our visits as a training session since she'll try to acclimate our pups to other dogs that may be in the store. Thanks for being so patient with Bear and Belle! -

So a few hours before I received my new puppy I strolled in here for some last minute supplies. The owner, Sherrie, talked me through my upcoming endeavor and gave me some great nutrition tips.
Of special note: The bull's penis chew toy she recommended has delighted my new pup. -

I'd love to give this place five stars. I don't care about the prices, I love what they do have, the service is great, and the quality is top notch.
My complaint? They're always out of the stuff I want. Either they didn't order it that week, or they sold out, or they stop carrying it. In the two years I've been going there, it's always been hit or miss as to whether they'll have some of the items I'm going there for. I get the option to order things that aren't there but that too has led to problems with either taking several weeks to arrive, or not getting a phone call that the products have come in.
I want to keep going to this store... I want to support a small local business over the larger stores, but it's becoming more and more frustrating to go there only to not find the food I need, necessitating either no food and another trip down there, or a separate trip to another store.
Not sure how much longer I'll keep going... I've already cut down how often I go due to the proximity after I moved. I'll keep trying, but be warned... they have a lot of variety, but they also seem to run out or not carry things that I can easily get with an impromptu stop at another local store. I think the one major thing that keeps me going back at this point is they're the only store that carries BG (Before Grains) cat food, which my two cats really like. -

I have to buy this product called Anti Icky Poo.
Why do I need to buy this lovely product with such a lovely, lovely, lovely, highly-sophisticated name?
Because my cat is an asshole and he framed my wiener dog. This turd of a cat distributed a generous puddle of his piss in the dog's room so that I would think the dog did it. Scheming, conniving little snot! But I've been around, mister! I know the difference between cat piss and dog piss! I know wiener dog! Wiener dog retaliates by squeezing out a turd! So mister asshole cat, I know it was YOU! YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU.
I need Anti Icky Poo to get the urine odor out so ass cat won't go back to the same spot to do the same deed. Supposedly. South Paw has Anti Icky Poo.
*BONUS tip for Ms Beesknees: This was printed on the bottle... Anti Icky Poo is "engineered to eradicate urine, it will digest any malodorous decay including liquid or dried fluids from vomit, feces, rotten vegetables, yadda yadda yadda, DEAD BODIES....and more..." -

One word... Muttville!
I think that's how you spell it.
Last week stopped by to get some dog bones and they were having a party for Muttville with yummy snacks and drinks. I like the fact that they do volunteer work and support a local rescue organization. Muttville is for older dogs that get dropped at SPCA or are found. The volunteers were trying hard to get me to adopt one (but my dog would shit!) They had them doing tricks - pretty complicated stuff, too. Really liked that they were helping out these older (sometimes throwaway) doggies!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

First, any retailer paying South Beach rents has to charge more than other parts of the City just to stay open. So, dinging Shireen of South Paw for higher prices just isn't fair. Everything is expensive down here, especially for working class renters.
When we decided to make the leap to raw food, Shireen regaled us with free samples, several options, and all the information we needed. Our gorgeous, satin-coated, radiantly healthy (digestive systems like clockwork!) dogs are proof that quality food from a loving, local source is a sound investment.
Shireen learned both of our names and our two dogs' names after our very first visit and hooks us up with everything we need. If its not at South Paw, she'll bring it over from Pawtrero the very next day.
Buy good food from your neighborhood retailer - your community and your dog(s) and cat(s) will thank you for it. -

Ok I am so busted, yes, I visited 2 dog boutiques in one day...so sue me.
A big thanks so all the yelpers that help me find this place right in the neighborhood I work in. The place is full of awesome dog stuff that I instantly fell in love with. They had all the typical things I have seen in other dog shops, but some real unique things as well. Like the Ed Hardy esc dog tags that you can get personalized. They totally put Lexi's petsmart made in a machine tag to shame.
The owners were cute, and didnt mind when Lexi got startled by another dog and peed on the floor. There was lots of street parking and free copies of Fetch, a SF dog owners publication that I never knew existed. Does it make me gay for my dog that I even care?
We will DEFINATLEY be back! -

I love South Paw. I love SHireen and Suzie. They have been a weatlh of information and help during the short life of my sweet angel ,Melodi. They were equally helpful with my loss of her 2 weeks ago. They allowed me to hold a memorial there as It was Mel's favorite place----she LOVED Shireen! and loved playing in the store. They have quality products and are amazingly knowledgable. No its not a discount petstore chain, which is why i love it. They never try to sell me things I didn't need. They gave me a bunch of free samples of food to find something Mel would actually eat. They stand behind thier products and if you like customer service you need to go.
Rest In Peace my sweet angel :0( -

This was my first time there, but the people were both very nice and the place is well stocked. A little pricy for treats and foods but the self bath service was only 15 bucks and they gave us shampoo, towels, an air dryer, and a nail clipper. They even gave my dog treats!
Definitely am going to try and go back next time. -

Update (06/15/06): The owners at South Paw are so nice. Shireen's husband has a nice little happy hour going at the grass next to the ballpark with little treats from the store. Watching your dogs have fun and sipping tequila, can't ask for much more!
************************************************** *
Shireen, the owner is super duper nice...too bad Spammy always pees on her. It's nice to have a neighborhood pet place to go and they have tons of cute stuff. Recently they started carrying a lot of the harness vests that are great for smaller dogs and if you take your dog on the Muni they sell some really cute muzzles, Spammy has one with cherries on it!Listed in: Spammy's hangouts

Pancho is our 11-year old lab/shepard mix who is 100% sweet, but until we came to South Paw was 120% stinky. Man, his farts could clear our whole apartment, let alone a room. I mean melt-your-eyelids-off stinky. Wooo-eee.
So we decided organic and raw is the way to go. Very expensive, yes, but remember, melt-off-your-eyelid-stinky, and it was well worth it. And Pancho is family, after all.
We'd shopped around to all the different stores and yes, they are all expensive. South Paw we found was a little less. On top of it, they always remember who we are (amazingly even after the first visit) and are quick with treats for Pancho.
Their bath setup is much nicer than what you'd find elsewhere, granted there is only one, so you sometime have to wait, but personally I feel better going there than one of those Pet Smart or Express places. Pancho likes it too.
And Pancho? Well, with his new diet, his farts are nearly gone and certainly not Chernobyl-like as they used to be; his breath is a million times better; his coat shines like all get-out; he's down to his fighting weight; and I would put my reputation on it (even though a sh*tty veterinarian nearly laughed at me when I said this -- even the glaucoma he'd had seems to have cleared up and his eyesight in general seems to have improved -- he doesn't lose the stick like he sometimes used to.
So I, and Pancho recommend this place highly. This particular diet is expensive, but you get what you pay for. And for this kind of food, we've found you can't get it cheaper elsewhere. -

It's like Cheers (TV show) for pet owners, the South Beach neighborhood bar for dogs, if you will. Your dog will drag you into the store if s/he's been there before, and the friendly store owners will remember your dog's name! You run into the usual suspects from the neighborhood and you start chatting and catching up while your dogs (haven't seen any other animals yet) run around the store. Because of South Paw, my dog loves baths. It's a great system: You bring your dog to the dog wash area, and everything else is provided, to include a fisherman's apron (is that what those things are called?) so that you won't get wet.
South Paw is also the official sponsor of the unofficial doggie happy hour on Thursdays at The South Beach Esplanade! Humans bring their own "treats" and South Paw will provide the treats for your pooch. South paw is the ultimate neighborhood store that brings the pet owner community together. (This review dictated to Kathy M. by her dog.) Woof! -

On our way back from the Ferry Building, Nacho and I decided to stop into South Paws...He was pulled in by the smell of the yummy treats..while inside I noticed the self-service bathing area..and wasted no time. For $15, they offer a nice big tub with shower hose..a water proof apron, lots of towels and grooming tools.
Poor Nacho didn't see it coming--he hates water..let alone a bath. But he walked out of the store squeaky clean..and I didn't have to deal with a mess in my own bathroom!
They carry a good variety of pet treats and supplies as well.Listed in: Pet me!

I love taking my two American Eskies here for a bath. The bathtub is high enough that I'm not bent over and finish their washes with a sore back. The spray hose and doggie collar makes sure the dogs are in the tub and not trying to jump out every chance they get. And they have 3 different types of shampoos for the dogs making them smell heavenly clean when done. There's brushes, a rubber loofah and the best hair dryer ever to get my two babies clean and white.
Love this place. The the staff was very friendly. I would take the dogs here for their $15 dollar baths, buy some treats and prade them down King street. Living the life...=) -

Updating because even though it seems like the products are pricey, we actually did some comparison shopping and their prices are way LOWER than Petco for some treats and they were about the same or lower than Pet Food Express. Plus, of course, there is the customer service factor - our dogs feel so loved here!!

Dude, this is like Bloomingdale's, the Ferry Building, and a spa all wrapped into one store that my pup loves. We live in the neighbourhood and frequent South Paw for all our treat and toy needs.
The staff has always been helpful. When I was looking for dog walker they gave me a list of references and the services provided. They are always so friendly to Bugs and me. They let him smell all the treats on the counter to try to find the ones he likes. The sales person called it. I told her Bugs was a Chug (chihuahua-pug) and she said, Oh yeah.. he's gonna love the chicken. He was not at all interested in the salmon treats but the minute a chicken one came around, he went nuts! I asked her how she knew and she said most chihuahua's prefer chicken. Who would have guessed?
So, when Bugs runs out of treats we make a special trip to his favorite store. It's not as cheap as Petco and other chains but the attention and knowledge that the staff have are worth the premium. Not to mention the treats are waaay better... according to Bugs. -

Brought Ruben, my humanoid Boston Terrier, into South Paw last week so that he could pick out a new chew toy.
Hey - if you had those tiny Chiclets for teeth too, you would deserve a new bone when you had finally conquered your three month old one.
I've come here about 5 times now. It's only a five minute walk from my office and the products I need have all been there - it's convenient.
So, when I bring in Ruben, the owner - a bubbly brunette - not bubbly in that annoying way, bubbly in that - this is my store, I have a theory and a dehydrated cheeseburger treat for your dog, way, comes over and asks me if she could help me find anything.
Yes.
My dog is, well, he's well-endowed for an 8 pound Boston Terrier, and he gets a little sloppy with his squats sometimes.
I found a pack of on-the-go wipes, that's right, I have to wipe my dog - fuck you, I don't carry him in a purse, he's all man and don't judge because your a hater.
So, she talked me out of buying this small pack for a larger, unscented and organic box - she's into making a good sale, and I appreciate the looking out.
Then, when I tell her we're here to get Rubes a new bone, she says, "Oh, want to do a taste test?"
I'll admit, I looked at her blankly.
She picked up Ruben, no worries - he's friendly and into being the center of attention - and opened up the treat jars that were safe for his size to let him pick out the treat he wanted.
How cute is that.
Ruben walked all the way back to my office, natural and organic - healthy - bone in mouth. Adorable.
Thanks for providing quality products and natural products - they're the way to go.
Plus, my dog was stoked.
Will always go here from now on. -

I love coming here. The owners always give me a treat when I come and my mom always buy toys or treats for me when I am there.
My fav toy, Moosey is from this store and my favorite food is raw lamb from here. My mommy bought that once and I was in heaven. I am salivating just thinking about that lamb...
They sometimes hosts local rescues and I got to meet other doggies looking for mommies and daddies. They looked so sad. I hope they will find new parents soon. -

Our favorite pet store to visit is South Paw! They've got a variety of premium snacks and pet food which our puggy loves! Suggested items are also offered with the best of their knowledge.
With friendly service from great workers and walk-in customers&dogs that are great to meet, it's become quite a social rendezvouz. -

I have mixed feelings about this store so I'm giving it only three stars. I liked the friendly customer service when I first visited the store a couple of years back. I was shopping for a toy for a friends' dog and the lady in the store that day was very friendly. I'm guessing she was the owner. I ended up getting a really cute plush toy that my friends loved.
Then about a month ago I came back to check out their dog bathing facilities. We recently adopted Stanford, an adorable Pembroke Welsh corgi and we were so excited to give him his first bath. We decided to bring him over to South Paw. I was expecting the same friendly service but the two women in the store that Sunday were totally unfriendly and unhelpful. They did not even offer treats to Stanford after he got his bath. They were so apathetic. And their towels were gross. -

Suzie Shireen and Ray rock!!
They will share all their knowledge of natural organic food. They truly care about the well being of everydog. They are a great neighborhood business. They promote community and get to know every new pup in the neighborhood by name.
South Paw carries a really nice selection of fun stuff at reasonable prices. Please support this small business!! -

Now here's a novel idea: a pet store that actually WELCOMES your pet.
The owners are awesome ... really helpful, friendly people who seem genuinely interested in their work and not in simply turning a fast buck. My dog, Grace, loves coming here (and she's picky). And I love the high quality products, so we're both happy. Prices are competitive for a small independent store. AND the owners get involved in local animal rescue causes. What more could you ask for in a local store? This one is well worth supporting. -

My dog would rather starve himself (and has on several occasions) than eat stale food. I can't buy food from the petsmart's of the world, because they have NO idea how long their food has sat in a warehouse or on their shelves. But, South Paw knows the answer to these questions...and most importantly, my dog -- the pickiest eater in the world -- has never turned his nose up to anything I've bought from them.
They carry very high quality products and refuse to carry products that don't meet their standards. They're incredibly knowledgeable and will take the time to help you find exactly what you want.
Plus - they always remember my name and my dog's name every time I go in...and I'm only in once a month! -

How many times am I going to have to go on record with this ideology......common sense people. "South Paw BathHouse & Feed Co." what make you think you are going to find a slew of fou fou outfits with a name like this. Suzie & Shireen are delightful people who have distinguished themselves from other pet stores by focusing on the essentials for dogs (food) and the essentials for owners (cleanliness). Everything else is just cake (yes, my dog has three beds and too many toys).
Maybe I can give one of those beds to the homeless guy outside my window right now--yeah no he can stay at Chris Daly's house. -

A local gem to visit. This shop is such a nicely laid out, organized space with a plethora of dog stuff like treats/chews/shampoos/toys/ear cleaners/leashes/collars/beds. I love this place for their treats and chews- best selection I've seen. They have jars and jars of chews like odorless bully sticks, tendon chews, Himalayan yak chews, and even elk antlers (cool!), not to mention so many awesome soft treats. Local dog food, raw dog food, dog food powder...you name it. Crazy selection! Staff is quite helpful with information on different chews in terms of lasting power. Fun for your dogs to visit as well, as they are welcomed in and offered a treat as soon as they enter. Located in cute, clean neighborhoody section of South Beach, perfect for a stop after a walk on the Embarcadero with your dog and a coffee stop at Crossroads Cafe around the corner. Ultimate plus -- it's local :)
Add to that the second best thing which is the outstanding sourcing of the food products - they buy only high quality foods made in U.S., Canada, New Zealand for example. I'm very choosy about what my dogs ingest and I haven't seen such conscientious sourcing as that found in this store -- excellent. Go out of my way to buy from here because of it. Staff here is always highly knowledgeable and courteous and doting on my dogs, every time I go, no matter who is working. A pleasure all around to shop for my dogs here. -

Super cute, very friendly...they carry all the natural, organic, super healthy ( and even raw) food that can be difficult to find.
Incredibly friendly, extremely helpful, they don't try to bring up the tab but will certainly offer suggestions....
Parking, yes, parking, right out front..metered spots but perfect to drop in after work before they close during the week.
