I went for a hair cut here last weekend.  I called and was told I didn't need an appointment to come in on Saturday and that I would be notified of the different hair cut price options.  I showed up Saturday morning with a friend and the receptionist seemed surprised that we didn't have an appointment and seated us.  He came back shortly and notified me that my haircut would be the most expensive option - $19.95 and I countered that I only wanted a trim, which was true!, and he gave my friend that more experienced hair dresser and I got a newer student for $12.95.

I knew from walking in that nearly every hairdresser (maybe 1 or 2 males) had really great, straight hair and that's what I wanted, so I felt comfortable, even with my beginner student.  I've gotten many hair cuts at Beau Monde, for better or worse, with less experienced stylists.  Again, I wanted a trim and knew teachers were around for help.

My stylist was a young, hip girl - maybe named Alexis? who was new to Portland and loved cutting hair.  She had a cute, straight hair cut and proceeded to only semi-slowly give me something similar.  She even taught me to successfully straighten my bangs.  I was surprised that a teacher only came by at the beginning and at the end and was really impressed with her - since early on she mentioned she'd have to ask a teacher every time she did something new.

I came out of this with the straightest hair I've had in a while, determination to buy a new hair straightener, about an hour spent in a chair (including washing, cutting, drying and straightening) and $12.95 + $4 tip less in my pocket.  I'll definitely go back.  I wish they were opened later than 5pm on weekdays.

I am not gushy.  I do not live and die for my hair.  That said, I love the way I feel with a great new do.  I am a happy gal as I had a great experience today at Paul Mitchell -The School.  Josh was my stylist and I highly recommend him.  He's young, but he's a pro.  He listened, he thought, he consulted with his supers, he/they checked back with me and then Josh implemented THE PLAN.  THE PLAN was a combination of highlights, the P.M. shine treatment and a great cut.  I came in with a "situation".  My hair was dry, over-stressed, with seriously grown-out highlights and badly in need of a cut.  Josh worked wonders while his his super checked in several times.  I was very pleased with the customer service I received.  I left with a great cut and I especially loved the subtle color/highlight duo that gave me back my 'natural' look.  Josh you rock.   I love the do and will return.

NOTE: Bring cash or check for the tip as you can't leave a tip on your cc!

Thanks to Olivia T. (the yelper) and Josh Lane (the hairstylist-in-trainig) my hair went from boring & ugly to hot & sexy! And all for $25 and 1.5 hours.

Paul Mitchell the School is highly recommended. I was nervous, at first, given these were students basically learning on my head. But Josh was really friendly, a great listener, and not afraid to ask the teacher for advice/questions. I felt well cared for as Josh worked on my cut & color; the instructor walked by occasionally to gauge the progress.

I walked in looking for just a cut, but Josh told me about the PM shine treatment, basically a semi-permanent hair color that should last about a month. It was an additional $12 to my already inexpensive cut, so I gave it a shot. Plus, it meat one additional *awesome* head massage with the shampoo/wash out. ;)

I am seriously in love with my hair right now. I highly recommend PM the school, but according to Josh it gets hectic on the weekends- so we both advise a weekday appointment.

Ask for Josh!!!

Valentine's Day is a perfect day to show yourself that you are in love...with the right person...and that person is you. To showed my lovely self that I love me, I went and got a haircut. I also love my pocket, so I decided to get a cheap and affordable haircut.

I made an appointment for 4 pm and I got there on time, so does my stylist, Ms Katie Miller. She asked me what kind of haircut that I wanted, I told her that I want her hair. She has this beautiful thick a line hair. She got excited, seemed like most of people that walked in there just want trimming. Not me, I'm ready to get rid of my split ends and abstract hair.

She spent an hour to cut my hair. She washed my hair before she cut it. The products that she used on me smells sooooo good. At the end of the service, I'm amazed with the haircut. She's still learning, but oh boy, you can't tell from the haircut that she gave me. It's amazing. Amazing layers and I love it! I will totally come back to her when I need another new do. It's hard to find a good hairstylist in Portland who will listen and know exactly you wanted.

So, if you need a haircut, save $12.95 + tips and make appointment with the peeps at Paul Mitchell The School. It worth it!

I have a lot of money and I hardly ever like to be pampered.  Wait a minute.  Strike that.  Reverse it.

Let me 'splain.

No, there is too much.  Let me sum up.

If you want to look good and spend very little money doing it; PM The S is the place for you.

Don't expect a serene spa experience, don't expect a perfect job from a stylist with 10 years experience and don't expect to spend less than an hour per procedure.

Do expect to spend less than $25 for a manicure and pedicure, do expect a heated massage chair while getting your nails done and do expect to use some of cabbage you have saved to tip the starving student who made you look glamourous/handsome/sextacular.

Here's my hair sob story:

There was once a girl who had damaged hair that flowed like a bush out of her head. She found a wonderful stylist who managed to fix the rut, and for years her hair was silky smooth. She would even flip her head around and it resembled a waterfall, so smooth. One day she called to get a touch up- he disappeared!!

For years, as the girl turned into a woman, she searched in the concrete jungle for an equivalent. One day a magical fairy named Tara (thank you 94.7) granted her that wish.

She wandered into the hidden school to be met with a guy named, Peter. He washed her hair smooth, cut perfected layers and made it come alive again. For only $10 she had joy. And all the days, at least until Peter would go off to become a famous stylist, she had her hair shiny and wonderful. The END!

I love this school, and Peter is my survival for beautiful hair- no joke. I wanted to note on the cuticle thing, I asked Peter why they don't do it...

Because it's actually very unsanitary and unhealthy for your nails. Think of how many cuticles those scissors have cut- and if it slips? Yea.... so I don't get mine trimmed anymore. They are there for a reason.

They also do:
-Makeup
-Up-Do's

So ladies, you want to look fancy? Go here.

After a questionable experience at the Aveda School I decided to swear off students treating me. I said no. I said it would be dangerous. And I decided I wasn't crazy. But then a friend of mine who goes to PM asked if I needed a haircut, because she needed a guinea pig for a test. Well, I had just received a haircut, and didn't love it. And then I figured I might as well give Karli her chance to fix it, and if it didn't turn out, well, good, I was going to have to pay to have it re-cut anyway.

To my surprise my hair turned out awesome. It took awhile (mine took a long while for the whole test thing) but it looked beautiful (Seriously her name is Karli, she's from Colorado . . . yeah). So then I needed an eyebrow wax, and I was downtown and I needed it bad (horribly horribly bad) and decided to give PM another try. Off I trotted. Well Karli couldn't help me (busy with a manicure) but they set me up with this super nice guy (he was ridiculously nice) and my eyebrows, once again, turned out spectacular. Mind you it was slightly longer than the 15 minute stop byes I'm used to, but they were wonderful. And, unlike Aveda, they can actually trim your eyebrows. Which I love. Love.

So what does this review boil down to? My faith in schools is reestablished. As long as it's Paul Mitchell.

After leaving Aveda (after I was completely jacked around-irate with them... see my other review!) we headed to Paul Mitchell.  My son (who is 8) was treated like any other client and not like "just a kid", and the girls that we had do our hair were fantastic.  The style that I have (a modified pixie) isn't difficult, but I had a lot to take off, so the stylist went and got one of the instructors, whom I later found out was the head guy and something of a legend around the place.  He wound up doing my whole cut - explaining to her (and me) what he was doing the whole time.  I would DEFINITELY return.  I was very pleased with the amount of time spent, the fact that they were able to schedule an appointment for us an hour after I called, and we were BOTH treated well.

A friend had been here a couple of times and while I had the day off on Friday and was downtown, I thought I would pop in for a trim. The computers were down when I arrived so at first I was told I might have to wait an hour. But within about 15 minutes I was seated with one of the students and she was consulting me on what I was wanting to have done.

I have really long hair (down to my bootie) and was just looking for a wash, dry, trim and flat-iron. My student or 'future professional' told me about all the products as she was using them on my hair. I know this is how the school recoups some of it's costs so went in expecting the sales pitch. But it wasn't a hard sell, more of just an explanation of what she was using. Even after the fact, Sammy didn't push me hard on buying any of the product.

I was there for more than an 90 minutes which was fine with me. She did a great job trimming up the ends of my hair and spent at least 30 minutes just flat-ironing (which I have never had done professionally before). I left there with a glossy curtain of hair falling down my back. It was literally the best my hair has ever looked. Even today after shampooing it feels soft and touchable.

All of this for the amazing value of just $12.95. I don't know how they do it. $12.95 for 90 minutes of someone's time? Plus they gave me a coupon for various future services such as a $9.95 haircut, color starting at $27.95, Mani & Pedi for $22.95, etc.

Even with a tip and the price of parking I got an amazing experience for under $20. Oh and speaking of tipping, they only accept cash or checks for the tip. They cannot add the tip to your credit card if you use one. FYI.

I've been here a few times because I used to work in the same building. It's amusing to watch how much fun the students and staff have there- they're always having events or fashion shows or dressing up funny to go hand out fliers.

That being said, I'm very girlie and very thrifty, and the rock-bottom prices here is why this place gets four stars instead of three. My friends and I have gotten pedicures together and mine have always looked fabulous. Sometimes the students look a little bored, but maybe that's to be expected.

Once I used a coupon for a free "PM Shine" treatment which is supposed to make your hair glossy and smooth for a month. The student working on me was pretty blase' - the scalp massage she gave me was the equivalent of receiving a limp handshake. My hair ended up shiny and smooth, but it honestly didn't look any different than usual and my mom and good friends couldn't tell the difference. But, it was free.

Most recently, I had a free haircut coupon from donating to charity through the Willamette Weekly Give Guide. I was nervous to use it since I've had one too many bad haircuts and now usually spend about $60-70 for a hip stylist. However, Aaron blew me away! He was very sweet, very detail-oriented, and really took his time making sure it was perfect. With the cut and flat-ironing, it took maybe two hours, but I look like a rock star. Oh, and did I mention it was free?? (Normally it'd be $12.95 but you can find coupons for $9.95, which is practically gratis).

If you don't make buckets of money and you have a little time on your hands, this is the place to go!

While in Portland for work, I was in dire need of some pampering.  I saw the PM school while driving back to the hotel and quickly called for an appointment.

I usually get my facials done by a local school here at home, so decided I would try them out.  At $20+/- how could I go wrong?  Well, first... that price did not include extractions.  Second.... and the worst part.... there was no pampering.  I mean, yes she massaged as she cleansed my face but that was about it.  The arm and hand massage that I have come to love while my mask is setting was not offered.

Since I felt a bit disappointed, I decided to ask for the mani/pedi.  The girl who did mine said it had been months since she had done it, but was good and really sweet.  The only negative was no cuticle removing.

My co-worker also went and was supremely happy with her cut/color.  Hers was something like $30-something dollars total.

That being said, I *would* come here again (if in Portland and if I am in a money pinch).

I was pleased with my experience here. Haircuts are just $12.95 and then you get a $9.95 coupon (along with other deals) after your first visit.

Two students work on your hair (or whatever you're getting done, they do waxing and nails as well) and seemed knowledgeable enough. When she was unsure of herself she got her hot instuctor to come over and fool around with my hair. I wasn't crazy about everything they did, but that's my doing for trying out some things that I don't normally like (as in using a diffuser, for example). I will definitely go back.

My hair took just under an hour, which is long for my sholder length hair, but I kinda like that. When I'm getting my hair done I want it to be an experience, I don't want to be out in 15 minutes. They will also do stuff for free if you're used a model for the class. Be careful tho, this was recently offered to a friend of mine while she was in for a brazillian and ended up with a somewhat traumatic experience. 12 students getting a try.

This was my first time using PM Beauty School and I will NEVER go back. I was there for a set of acrylic nails, which was a total waste of my time and money. I understand that this is a school and we pay about 60% of the normal price for a reason. BUT the girl who did my nails chatted with her friends the entire time about "hot clients" in the other room. She would continually stop doing my nails to talk to her friends (other students) and look through the nail room door to check out guys getting their hair done. Apparently hot men don't come in very often, or so they said. Ugh. On top of that my nails took almost 3 hours to put on!  To top it all off, my nails looked absolutely horrible and 4 nails came off within 24 hours. I had to rip the rest off (which came off easily) because I couldn't stand to look at them anymore. It was a complete and total waste of money and I would suggest to anyone thinking of going there... DON'T. - At least never get your nails done there.

I love this place. You get glamorous hair with excellent service for a really low price. I had a deep condition treatment and a hair cut; it only cost me $23. What a deal. Josh was excellent. He took his time to pamper and cut my hair. It was a relaxing experience; he is really good at massaging my head. It took 2 hours to get done so I wouldn't recommend parking on the street because it may take more than the 90 min parking meter. I would totally recommend my friends to give these students a chance to show off their skill. With all the services that Josh provide usually cost me at least $75 at Gigi or Tony and Guy but now I know, I don't need to pay top dollars for the same treatment :)  They do accept Cash and Checks but no credit cards. They accept debit card but if you want to tip your stylist, you have to give them cash instead.
