I got my hair cut here last Friday, and it was one of the best cuts I've gotten.  Antonia listened to what I liked and disliked about my hair, and what I wanted it do do, she made some suggestions, and then cut and styled my hair the way I asked.

This is an amazing deal for $17 (I went with one of the honor's students in phase 2).  There was a quick scalp massage, then she washed my hair, cut it, blow dried it, and styled it.  I paid a little extra to have it flattened and curled with a straight iron.

I can't imagine getting my hair cut anywhere else!

For a frugal lady like me who seeks good quality products, PMTS is where it's at.  A $12 haircut gets you a shampoo and condition, a haircut, plus a five minute scalp massage.  I've been to the school twice and each time took two hours.  So what?  Bring a book!  Or choose from one of their many magazines.  The students take their time and instructors come around to periodically advise.  My first haircut (don't freak out folks) was a little botched - the layers were no good.  An instructor swooped in and finished the haircut for me, and voila!  A pro cut for $12.

The second time I went in, the student was superb.  First of all, she LISTENED to me.  Second of all, she GAVE ME WHAT I WANTED.   She was also a total sweetheart.  I got her card and am definitely going to go back to her.  She did for my hair what many "professionals" have been unable to do.  She made my coarse hair feel Soft.  I left feeling so happy and pretty (ha ha ha).  I kept swishing my hair around.  Yay!

My #1 tip to other customers:  be very, very clear about what you want.  Bring in pictures if that helps.  It's a very nice experience at Paul Mitchell The School, and I am 100% going back for my third haircut.  :)

I've been back in the city for a while and keep trying new salons or looking for specials just because I don't want to pay $40+ for a hair cut because I never do something drastic (and my hair is long so sometime they charge extra).  So I decided to try this place out cuz its close and its cheap ($12-17 for a haircut?!) and was really really impressed.

i scheduled an appointment for a Saturday and reading the yelp reviews, I expected to be there for at least 2 hours.  My appointment was at 10  so maybe it was because it was early cuz I had a short wait only.  Karina did my hair and did an awesome job.  She said she used to have hair texture like mine (straight, fine hair that is hard to curl) so handled it well.  She asked me what i wanted, gave me a wash, massaged in some oil for shine, gave a great cut and blowdry and I was out in under 2 hours, even with her instructor coming over to examine.

I told her I didn't like shaggy layers or fishtail ends so she did light layers and a blunt cut at the end.  I asked for some side swept bangs and she did awesome on those.  When i get bangs, they are usually long and hit the cheekbone, this time we decided we could do shorter, around the eye and she said it would be manageable.  I don't know how she did it but my bangs stay out of my face without any gel/spray and everyone complimented them (first time i got shorter bangs).

I will definitely be going back here for cuts and trims.

I got my hair done here last Thursday and I couldn't be more happy with it. I have majorly damaged hair from getting it chemically relaxed since I was 8 and just recently having weave, so I needed to get it cut after my relaxer. I can say that I was super nervous about having short hair, just because it's not something that I was thrilled about. But nevertheless, I went. I was not at all nervous about someone learning about hair putting a chemical relaxer on my hair, as I knew there was someone watching them. And wow, they had a lot of guidance for sure. I had three teachers working with my stylist on my hair and she did a really good job! I love my hair! At the end of the appointment, they take you through all the things they used on your hair, but I didn't feel pressured to buy any of the stuff at all! (Even though I wanted it, I'm just super duper poor for sure). And the relaxer + deep condition + cut and style + flat iron only cost 60 bucks, which is pretty cheap for all of that stuff.

The only thing is that it really does take a LONG time. I was quoted that the appointment would take 2 and a half hours and actually was there for four! Wow! However, getting a relaxer usually takes a long time, and for someone new learning, it was sure to take longer, so I was ok with it. Just be warned, bring a book!

A stylist who listens to what you need...  5 stars.
A stylist who does not cost an arm & a leg...  5 stars.
A haircut that takes way longer than I'd ever expected...minus one star.

Ok, so when you make your appointment, you are told that there is a minimum of 2 hours for the cut because these are students working on you.  I figured, they'd need to get the "A-Ok" from their instructor from time-to-time, which I think is AWESOME because if the instructor is ok with the cut, then I am!  It was my fault for assuming a 2 hour minimum meant it'd take 2 hours.  It was also my fault that my poor husband was waiting around for 4 hours until my haircut was complete.... YES....4 hours....(Sorry honey!)

BUT.  I left a happy camper.  My haircut was great, the styling was great...and I was so happy that I walked out w/ the cut that I wanted.  The reason why the haircut took 4 hours was not because the stylist was slow...it was because it was SO busy!  A haircut on a Saturday...I should have known!  The instructors (called "Learning Leaders") were occupied the entire time, running back-and-forth from student to student... plus, I had
overheard that they recently brought in a new class of aspiring stylists on board, so the newbies needed extra attention.  The stylists need to get approval before going onto the next step, so yes, it takes time.

I've been to the Aveda Institute before and was not happy w/ the outcome.  My cut at the Aveda Institute was not what I wanted at all, and I never saw the student asking for approval, and I don't even think I knew for sure if there were any instructors on the floor there!  So I have to give it to Paul Mitchell School - Lisette did a GREAT job and I'll definitely be back!  Less than $20 for a haircut, of COURSE I'll be back!  It's a major plus that Lisette knew what she was doing, and did a fantastic job  (i.e: I wanted to keep my length...which means, I wanted to keep my length! She did a great job and I walked out happy....still having long hair! :) )

I saw a few women walk-in and out w/ absolutely different styles, which is great...because I'm confident that these students know what they're doing...

I just hope it doesn't take so long again when I go in the next time!!!  I'll try to make my appointment for any day but a Saturday!~ :)

Thanks Lisette, YOU ROCK!

let's preface this review with the fact that it's a $12 haircut.... considering times are tough & all, i thought it was worth a try since a $65 haircut is no longer in the budget. So with that being said... $12 is not bad for what I got. However, i should make you aware that the actual experience was less then pleasant. My stylist has been in the program for 2 months.. yep, 11 month program and he was on his 2nd month... yay for me! My only saving factor was that the "supervisor" would pay visits to the booth to check up on his work. True enough, once it's cut its gone so there's not much that can be done but oh well. My stylist/student was less than enthused and showed little interest in servicing me -- spent most of his time looking around then focused in on getting my cut done expeditiously. My haircut ended up being shorter than I wanted but a risk I knew about. I guess what I'm saying is you get what you pay for... a decent haircut (thanks to the supervisor) with below average service. it really depends on who you get but be aware some of the students have only been in the program for 6 wks before they set their scissors on your locks.
