We ate their once and ordered once, and were stuffed. Until I tried Patxi's, I was missing Pizzeria Uno's on Lombard(now another pizza spot). Patxi's deep dish is alot better, because the crust isn't too greasy and the sauce is tangy and fresh. Wash everything down with a cheap pint of beer, and you are in heaven.
Go for the basic with sausage, pepperoni, bellpeppers, and mushrooms. Err on smaller. With all the fillings, one slice will fill you up. Order a small salad to start, because the pizza takes time. Or you can drink. But go hungry.
Their delivery service is spot-on, friendly and dilligent. They said 45 minutes - 1 hour, and they were right. The pizza's crisp crust held, and it was just as tasty as in the restaurant.
FANTASTIC pizza. On par with Zachary's. We had the Chicago Style, in a combo called "Favorite" and it was DE-LISH!
They delivered. Whohoo! Will definitely order again. Right now. Gotta go.

3.5 stars.
Pretty good deep dish!
A mistake was made somewhere in regards to our order, so we ended up having to wait somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half for our pizza! Luckily, our waiter could tell we were starving and upset by this, so he gave us a greek salad and a piece of normal pizza to hold us over on the house. The greek salad was insanely fresh and had great flavor. The flat cheese pizza was ok - after trying it I would never consider getting it over deep dish.
I would go back, I think this place and little star are neck and neck, but I do favor Zachary's in Berkeley for deep dish.
Better than Little Star, and I LOVE Little Star...
I think they might be open on Mondays now, which is a huge plus for football watching on their pretty nice TVs.
Paxis Chicago style pizza is great. For me, it hands down beats Little Star and even tops Zachary's Pizza in Berkeley. Paxis sauce is the clincher that raises them above Zachary's and Little Star's crust just can't compare to the crispy, buttery deliciousness of Paxis. I've never had the thin crust here and don't think I will, I go for the deep dish. One small is more than enough for two people to share, making for a pretty affordable dinner. If you dine-in they have a bunch of great beer on tap. We've also had it delivered and it arrived promptly and was still nice and hot. Mmmm.

I love this Patxi's Pizza. They get my vote for best pizza in town. I had never really understood Chicago style pizza of the term "pizza pie" until I came here. The pizza is truly a pie. The Chicago style pizza is a few inches thick and it just jam packed with ingredients. Not only that, the crust is flaky and delicious.
My favourite dish is that Chicago style special pizza, with added olives. Soooo good.
The one thing about this place is that the pizza is a bit more expensive than other pizza. But you know what, it's that much better, so I really don't care.
On top of that, they deliver!

In a town where "best pizza" is a sensative subject, I feel confident giving my vote to Patxi's.
I like Little Star but it's often a mad house and frankly the pizza I've had, while good, is almost too heavy. More like a lasagna than a slice of pizza.
Patxi's is my new weekend lunch place because the slices are cheap and PBR is only $1. Hell yes. We are in a recession and Patxi's will get my money forevers.
Also, the staff here is totally bomb. I was here on Lovefest afternoon and I overheard one of the servers talking about her sister and saying she was dressed like a "total whore."
Amazing.

I was a late bloomer. Believe it or not, I never tried pizza until I was in the 4th grade. I told everyone that I "didn't like it". Truth be told, I think I was afraid of it. I mean it's Italian, so exotic and so European.
Until one day I attended one of best friends birthday party. The original plan was to pick up McDonalds and have a picnic in the park but Mother Nature wanted to "out me" and made it rain.
So now instead of chowing on a Big Mac, we were now heading to a local pizza place.
Since that day I have grown fond of the pizza pie. I know am in search of the perfect one. I admit my first choice is thin crust, but there are a few Chicago Style pizzas that I love and one of them is Paxtis. The crust is light and buttery and never overcooked. The toppings plentiful and full of flavor.
Zachary's may be numero uno in my heart but I believe it's perfectly fine to have a number 2.

As good as any Chicago style deep dish I've had, and my favorite in the Bay area. Quality ingredients, thick, pie-like crust, and they deliver, unlike many pizza places in the area.
Ask for a magnet each time to get a discount on your 11th pizza.
Quite a disappointment. One star for delivery, two for the pizza. Others have noted that the soy cheese is not vegan. Perhaps due to the casein in it, it's also not good for people with general dairy (non-lactose) allergies. Furthermore, it doesn't taste good, there's too much of it (especially given that there's too little sauce on the thin crust.
The deep dish fares better (as should be expected at a "chicago" pizza place). But still, it's not exceptional, nor is it cheap. The toppings were definitely the best parts of the pizzas. Anyway, I won't be going back.
Patxi's is top-notch. Just go, you'll love it. Congrats to Patxi, the owner, who is opening up his 3rd location.
For those looking to compare with Zachary's (stuffed), I would say Patxi's has them 2 ways: flakier crust, 'zingier' tomato sauce. Simple, I know, but the stuffed deep dish really needs the pie-like crust.
Good stuff(ed).
I am tempted to give 5 stars because it is the best pizza out there that DELIVERS!!!!! ohmigawd!! so good!! We had the spinach and mushroom deepdish and added chicken!! WOW!!! amazing!! The delivery took an hour which totally sucked but it was hot and wonderful!! and it kept pretty well for left overs. We had a medium and barely got through half!! I always order anchovies on the side... and they are pretty skimpy with the fish and that was sort of dissapointing since their pizza is so gignormous!!
Lots o flavor and I can't wait for another lazy night with the boyfriend so we can order delivery and it actually taste great! Oh and delivery is FREE!!! I love not being in the East Bay anymore!!!
The ingredients in the deep dishes are fresh and quality. I love Chicago style pizza. The flavors and size of each slice are to die for.
I'm not sure how I'd compare it to Zachary's in Berkeley or Little Star. But it is definitely one of the best pizza places in the city.
AMAZING.
Great ceasars, good affordable wine selection.
Great pies. I grew up eating Zacharys pies and personally prefer their chunkier tomato sauce- though Patxis is closer, tastier fillings, and better crust.
Also, they deliver!
This is a really good place with really good pizza...plain and simple. If you like deep dish....this place is right on the mark. Great crust, wonderful tomato sauce, and glorious cheese. I also like their salads, pints on tap....IPA(YUM), and the high definition football games on the wall.
The only caveat is that parking can be a bit difficult on hayes.
I personally like this place better than little star....although both are great.
I'm no Chicago style pizza expert, but I do live a few blocks away from Zachary's in Rockridge, and have consumed many of their pies over the years.
In my one experience with Patxi's over the weekend, the feeling was quite familiar. It's a busy place with not enough space for customers who keep coming back for a killer pie.
We got the wedge salad, which had a generous portion of bacon and was big enough to be split in half. That was followed by a 10" (the small) that we could only eat two pieces of, each.
If you've had Zachary's before, the crust is about the only thing that makes Patxi's pizzas similar. Patxi's sauce, in my opinion, is much better. The only thing I didn't like about it was the amount of cheese they give you, which is completely over the top. Next time I'm telling them to go easy on that stuff.
i took my family from the uk there and it was not so good.
the service was very slow(they forgot we asked to have the cold starter before our pizzas/the antipasti plate did not require any cooking,so why was it so late to arrive at our table?),then, when my brother in law and i finally got our pizzas,my sister had to wait an extra 15 minutes to get her salad. The pizza dough was not nice(we didnt order the chicago style, just regular,so it didnt need 40 minutes to cook),they were very small.Only the wine was ok.Bad service/mediocre .food, sorry!!!I AM HERE DESCRIBING THE FILLMORE BRANCH IN THE MARINA/COLLOW.thank you.
My experience may have been an anomaly, but I feel compelled to share it because it did happen.
After my brother and I each ate a salad, we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first pizza there, and it did not. Forty five minutes after we had ordered it, tables all around us getting their orders, blood sugared out as well, we finally asked our pass us by, and ignore us again and again, server, what was happening with our deep dish pizza?
A few minutes later the manager, not our server, brought out to our table, an obviously oven forgotten, over baked blackened pizza mess. She set it on an eight inch riser, it's burntness even more obvious, and then offered a weak apology to our starving faces and then the obligatory half off discount for the pie only, and or, we could wait for another pizza!, and nothing else.
A manager trying to pass off an obvious kitchen mistake with no comp drinks or food, or a, come back try again, on the house offer, is just despicable, and a first in my lifetime.
As I mentioned, we, after waiting and waiting, were so hungry at that point, that the idea of starting over, in the lunchtime, now busier, restaurant, and or the option of going elsewhere, was not in the cards, we needed food badly! We took the offer and ate around the most burned areas, the crust below was almost totally black.
Patricia Unterman, the SF Examiner food writer, with whom I reiterated the experience, said that Patxi's should have comped the mistake meal.
How much tip do you leave for something like that?
I'll not go there again.

For whatever reason I like the traditional sausage, onion, and mushroom deep dish here much better than Little Star in the Mission. And I don't even like mushrooms. On the other hand, Little Star is within stumbling distance of Zeitgeist and has Racer 5. Decisions, decisions.

Many Chicago-style pizza places want to put their own spin on deep dish. They aim to take you on a taste adventure. But I don't want an adventure. The pizza has the city of origin in the name. I want to go there.
Patxi's is the closest I've come to Chicago pizza that wasn't within sniffing distance of the backward-flows of the city's eponymous river. It looks like a Giordanos pizza, which happens to be my favorite. It almost tastes like one too. The sauce is a little stronger, and the crust a little weaker and less buttery. But that's it. Only someone who shared a medium cheese with their law school roommate 3000 times would notice the difference. It's almost dead on.
The service was a bit slow at the drinks quite flat, but our server was nice about the latter and getting Chicago pizza right overwhelms all other considerations. The server could've pointed out flaws in my posture and criticized my choice of watches, but as long as he brought out a replica Giordanos pizza rather than making me ship one on dry ice (yes you can do this for $50), I'd be happy. Check Patxi's out.

Even though it takes a while for them to seat you, it is worth it!
Plus, you can pre-order your pizza so it's ready when you sit down. Once you get it, it is pure cheesy goodness!!
I love the pizza here. Deep dish has just the right amount of sauce. Thin crust rocks my world with a generous dusting of cornmeal for a super crispy finish. And, bonus: salads are huge and awesome.
So why the 4-star review?
I am convinced that every member of the staff is perpetually baked. I don't that mind at all - except that I literally have never had one pizza completed as ordered. And I've ordered 5 in just the last 2 weeks.
No, I am not fussy and none have been complicated.
That said, I will keep going back because even their mistakes are delicious. REALLY delicious.
More expensive and not nearly as good as Little Star. The only real advantage they have over Little Star is the fact that they deliver.
This place has got a decent Chi town pie.
I again have to praise the longevity and tenacity of this pizza!
We had some whole wheat veggie pizza, which I really wasn't excited about, being a health-averse carnivore. I threw the leftover pizza in my car's trunk, sang some karaoke for three hours, and then put the pizza in my fridge. One, two, and three days later, the pizza still tasted delicious, even after improper preservation!

Chicago style pizza is such a treat, isn't it? Well, it is for me. Growing up in a household of unwavering allegiance to New York style, thin crust pizza, my pizza paradigm was slightly skewed.
Funnily enough, my first taste of a Chicago pizza was IN Chicago! Needless to say I've been a fan ever since but on that same note, it set the bar VERY high since I started out with the best. I must say that Patxi's did not disappoint.
It never ceases to amaze me the sheer grandness of this type of pizza. We order and when it get's set down on the table after the 30-40 minute wait (that's how long it takes to bake them), my mouth hangs slightly ajar as I stare longingly at what is clearly, in my eyes, a culinary masterpiece.
We ordered a standard Hawaiian but damned if it didn't taste standard. I had one rather large piece and was so full after it I could barely finish my beer! It was just...TOO GOOD. My brain was telling me, more, more, MORE! But my stomach was saying, if you eat one more bite this may not have a happy ending.
Patxi's is better than Little Star in my opinion, the crust and service was superior by far. I have heard rumblings that they're opening one in my neighborhood, the Marina. Oh Lord, please let it be true.

Patxi's is - by far - the best pizzeria in San Francisco.
Growing up in the Bay Area, my only encounter with, "Chicago," style pizza was deep-dish Domino's, a pizza-like concoction that literally made me ill. After visiting Chicago and wolfing down many of their regional pies, I became well acquainted with what a, "Chicago," really is.
Patxi's pizza is actually better than what many restaurants serve in the windy city, and Chicago transplants tend to agree.
There is much comparison to Little Star Pizza in Yelp reviews, and although justified, Patxi's is unquestionably the best. Zachary's in the East Bay comes in a very distant third, for anyone who enjoys what they serve.
Paxti's is the perfect antidote to that annoying (but unfortunately very prevalent) type of person I like to call the "Regional Food Snob". You know the type. They are very easy to spot because they're always going around saying things like "Well, I'm from New York so I KNOW what real pizza tastes like" or "You can't get a decent Steak on the West Coast" or "I don't even bother eating BBQ unless I'm back home in Texas". Yeah. THOSE people.
What does all of this have to do with Paxti's, you ask? Before a recent trip to Chicago I made a point of consulting every expatriate Chicagoan I could find to discover where to get the best "deep-dish" Pizza in the city that invented it. These people all assured me that it's "never quite as good" when they have it in other cities. Sorry folks, Paxti's is every bit as good (probably better) than what I had in Chicago.
What's more, the servers at Paxti's are amazing, especially considering that it's really just casual pizza joint. We were warmly greeted IMMEDIATELY upon entering, and our server was very attentive in just the right amount. She even went out of her way to point out that a size smaller than what I originally ordered would be plently for two, and she was absolutely correct.
Definitely a 5-star experience in every way!
Hoping he never read this, but I'm not exactly the biggest pizza fan. But I gave in and took him to Patxi by recommendation of a friend's.
Took 2 rounds around the block and found parking right across the street. Were disillusioned by the loitering crowd outside that it was going to be a bit of a wait, but there was actually a lot of open seating in the small restaurant on a Saturday afternoon (1pm).
After the typical back and forth of being considerate but also pushing for what we wanted, we decided to build your own pizza. We got a deep dish with bbq chicken, heart artichoke, spinach and onion. It took about 20-30 minutes for the pizza to come out. It was extremely hot, and the sauce around the edges were a little dangerous for the tongue.
The pizza was delicious! The slice was manageable and wasnt extremely difficult to eat. At first, we couldnt find the chicken hidden in our pizza and wondered if they forgot it, but it was layered in between the spinach and the crust. It had a nice crisp to the edges.
The two of us couldnt finish the 10"--we had 2 slices left over, which made for a great midnight snack. I may be converted after this experience.
Spinach deep dish pizza is awesome! Management brought in this deep dish pizza last year for a luncheon and I couldn't believe how good a vegetarian pizza could be prepared.
I went to Little Star the same week and this is much better. I would come again... neighborhood is great! Patxi's the best deep dish pizza in San Francisco.
Again, bring the half star option, cause this would be 4.5 stars if given the option.
The deep dish pizza is, quite simply, to die for. Look at my other reviews - I don't gush like that.
The 'secret sauce' (tomato sauce) that tops the deep dish pizza may be the best sauce of its kind I've ever had. I might put it on my ice cream if given the option.
Several solid brews on tap, fresh salads make this a winner top to bottom. To be fair, I have never had anything on the menu but the deep dish, so take that into account.
Why not 5 stars? The tables are very close together - a peeve of mine. Also, there was a member or two of the staff that I caught a whiff of attitude from (tho never directly to our party) - especially when a guy came in solo - table for one, apparently not a popular option with the staff when they are crowded.
If having the deep dish - make sure you have the time. This isn't the quickest pizza you'll have, but it is worth the wait.
Holy crap this pizza is good. I messed several changes of trousers in one sitting. The pizza, as delicious as it is, most definitely will not prolong your life, but 70 years is too long to live anyway. Have another slice.

I'm a New York metro transplant to San Francisco, so I take good pizza very seriously. And native Californians may not realize this, but a lot of your pizza.... well... sucks.
So I was pleasantly surprised when I got my first really good pizza at Paxti's. I ordered the veggie thin crust, and as promised, it took a good thirty minutes to come out. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant (not exactly a super casual pizza parlor, but a nice casual place that is comfortable for those with kids) is pleasant, and I was kept busy with a very nice glass of white wine.
I did try some of my friend's deep dish pizza, and unfortunately, I didn't like it at all. (However, it's probably because she ordered it without cheese. I'm definitely willing to force my boyfriend to order some on my next visit so I can try it). Either way, these things are huge--only the size of a dinner plate, yet they look more like dessert pies than pizza, and their size puts old school Pizza Hut deep dish to shame.
Bonus for smaller eaters? The half pizza I took home as leftovers tasted awesome the next day.
Overall, Paxti's offers delicious pizza in a great neighborhood, and I'm definitely going to go back for some more when the next pizza craving hits.
Such a bummer of a place. They honestly have about 10-15 employees working in this small place at a time, on a weeknight even. It's not terribly busy, but the pizzas take about 30-40 minutes to make and even longer for the "I'm-way-too-busy-but-I-work-in-Hayes-Valley,-Aren 't-I-cool?" waiters/waitresses.
They need to speed up their service, stop this "we only serve slices for 5 hours out of the day" thing and get their prices right.
You've got a long ways to go Patxi's. The name is terrible, and you and I both know people only come back because of the Chicago style.

ok, you know i love to stick something hot and cheap into my mouth as much as the next guy, but to be fair..
Yes, i should qualify myself as i am used to a level of quality which is measured at a higher level as i have lived in both Chicago and NYC. and when i say i have been arround i must insist you believe me, my furry little friend.
So when i walked into Patxi's in Hayes Valley i was ready for a pizza with the following issues. a crust which is both soggy and devoid of hold. A lack of flavor or what could be best described as tomato sauce/ catchup. Or i have seen as toppings or what most self respecting pizza lover as bologna.
Anyway, i digress. Lets suffice it to say that this pizza as all things which a pizza should be... an experience.
the deep dish pizza with spinach, cheese and garlic had a constiencancy which could be best described as firm and layered. The flavors are separate and devoid of unwanted oil so each bite is different.
Oh so good. now i have to head back over to Zachary's Chicago Pizza in North Oakland to see how it compares. humm.. good.
Food not only can taste great but can bring back wonderful memories. Patxi's always reminds me of my former co-worker Sylvia who introduced me to this friendly Hayes Valley pizza joint a few years ago.
I always get the deep dish pizza, 'build it yourself' style. It is the only way. I load it up with Italian sausage, artichokes and jalapenos. The small is perfect for two people.
Let's work outside in. The dough is incredibly fresh. The edges are ever-so-slightly crunchy but still soft enough inside to begin soaking in the flavors of the tomato sauce. Generous bite size pieces of sausage, fresh artichoke hearts and jalapenos that have been pickled parade around the tomato sauce and cheese. As you are given a generous amount of sauce I would advise not getting the tomato topping option.
Usually we are left with two slices that are even better the next day...cold. Lol. And don't worry, they are not soggy.
As the deep dish takes about 35-45 minutes to make, I highly recommend you call in beforehand to place your order. That way, by the time you get there, you will only have to wait a few minutes for your pizza while the guy next to you has a "WTF!?" expression on his face and you can think "Booyah, booyah, booyah," wipe that sauce off your lips and plunge in for another bite. Word.
After hearing the glowing reviews about this place, I SOOO wanted to love Patxi's. It was just OK. I wasn't wowed or swept off my feet.
Overall, it was kindof Ho-hum.
A bit on the pricey side but the pizza is awesome and they now deliver!!!!!!
Ordered "The Favorite" w/Sausage -Pepperoni, mushrooms and olives.
Get there pizza with whole wheat crust and low fat cheese to lighten it up a bit. There thin crust is my fave. Deep dish pizza is very good as well and if you get it Tryt he Calfornia with whole wheat crust and low fat cheese , spinach and chicken and you actually have a pretty healthy pizza.
Price is a bit much , but very high qualiy pizza. My favorite delivery in SF.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I no longer have to fly to Chicago to get my fix.
The Good: Best Chicago style pizza around. We can argue about Zachary's vs Little Star vs Patxi's all you want, and it just comes down to being a matter of taste. Patxi's is my favorite. They now deliver!
The Bad: It's Chicago style, so the pizza is going to take 45 minutes to cook. Just deal with it.
The Ugly: $1 PBRs in a can. Most times I'm drunk before my pizza is gone, sometimes I'm drunk before my pizza arrives.

If I could give it more stars I would.
I'm vegan and I don't eat white bread. So this place was perfect with their (free) whole wheat option and soy cheese. Yes, there is Caesein in the soy cheese, who cares? I'm not a vegan nazi, it's just Milk protein.
(Every Amys frozen meal is technically not vegan either)
The atmosphere was warm, relaxing, and inviting.
The staff was ridiculously friendly and all smiles.
After having a glass of wine and my boyfriend had a few $1 PBRs our pizza came.
PIPING hot and the soy cheese had melted (hallelujah) it was by far THE BEST PIZZA I'VE EVERY HAD. It was perfect, the crust was crunchy and tasted really good, the sauce was nice and sweet, and the soy cheese was definitely up there with Follow Your Heart soy cheese.
My boyfriend's pepperoni pizza looked so good I was a tad jealous.
These pizzas are clean, don't get me wrong I know its unhealthy and fattening, but they have just enough oil on them without making them greasy and there was no guilt after eating their pizza.
Will definitely return. The 12" pizzas (wanted more for tomorrow) came to about $15 each plus 5 beers and a cup of wine only brought it to $45.
