Washington, DC
Met a friend at Patty Boom Boom a few weeks back. I am Caribbean and enjoyed the music. However, the dance floor is super tight. Not enough room for me to wine my hips. Maybe its not the size of the floor, but the size of my hips?
The best thing happening at Patty Boom Boom was actually the Goat and Guava patty downstairs. It was a surprise combination. Just for 3 bucks or so, it was truly one of the best late night eats I've ever had;-)

Review from Sahar R.
I like the patty, but I might not like the boom boom.
We rolled in here at 2am on a weekend night and the first stop I made was on the first floor to get a veggie patty, that I had heard so much about. Three dollars later, I had a warm enclosed pocket of food goodness in my hand and I poured myself some sauce. Before I could try it, someone wanted to go upstairs, so cradled my little patty and we went upstairs to the "BOOM BOOM" room.
Now upstairs was a tiny hot steamy room filled with gyrating bodies with a full bar, which is known for it's strong white and dark rum punches (I recommend the white rum punch). Dancehall, and reggae blares from the speakers. Towards the end of the night, the music kinda winds down to the slower baby making genre (think Mad Cobra's Flex song, if you're 18 and over see this video http://www.youtube.com...). Amidst, this wild dancing orgy, I only had one thing on my mind: PATTY.
So we find a seat by the window, people run off to get rum punches, and it's just me and patty alone. OR SO I THOUGHT.
Let me just say this is the type of place where men approach you to dance crotch first. You could be sitting down minding your own business, then suddenly a pair of gyrating hips appears in your line of vision, and the next thing you know you're pushed up against a wall, your legs crossed over his, slowly grinding the night away.
In fact before I could even take one bite of my patty, I was already being pressed against a wall by some young man who had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while (I had the same look).
I spent about four songs slowly twisting to the left and the right, making sure I had my patty in my line of vision. In fact I was keeping a closer eye on patty than I was my purse. Sometime during that whole grinding session, he manged to whisper something in spanish in my ear to which I replied with "TENGO HAMBRE". Unfortunately, now he thinks I'm hungry for him. He smiles thinking he just put the "sensual" in "nonconsensual". Only when he managed to start winding low, did I manage to bend over and reach for the patty I left on the table. Now I had four beats to finish eating the patty before he worked his way back up.
I have to admit that was a tasty patty(very similar to an empanada), and the sauce that came with it was like liquid fire. Well worth the wait, and the fact that this guy will be waking up tomorrow to find crumbs in his hair. Whatever, he should know better than to stand between a hungry girl and her patty. -

Not bad at all. If you're a lover of reggae, you will love this place. If you're a lover of dancing in very close quarters with people, you will love this place. If you're a lover of relatively low-cost drinking options, you will love this place.
If you are a lover of personal space, however, you will hate this place with a passion. It gets SUPER crowded. If you are a lover of getting drinks in a timely manner, you won't like this place so much on the crowded nights, because there's only one bar.
As is stands, I like all of the aforementioned things, so I'm willing to take the good with the bad. Plus, the little beef patties are decent late-night drunk food. Probably would not like them sober, but then again, I guess I'll have to give that a try one day and see how it works out for me. My overall assessment of Patty Boom Boom is "thumbs up." -

A night at Patty Boom Boom is, without question, a night you will never remember... or soon forget. And, of course, it is my absolute favorite place to dance in DC.
That being said, it isn't for everyone. If you are into popped-collars and fraternity bros - don't bother, brah. If you are claustrophobic and need lots of "space" in which to dance - try going out in South Dakota. If you can't stand reggae music (hard to fathom but a legitimate concern for some) - this club is not your jam.
On the more obvious plus-side: Their rum punch is incredible (and strooong) and comes in several varieties based on the type of rum you prefer. I hear their Dark-and-Stormies were voted "Best in DC" but I have yet to try them - too busy working my way through the rum punch. The music is amazing - great rhythm, great remixes and, not surprisingly, attracts some of the more-skilled dancers in the area. True, some are aggressive but at least they have rhythm when they try to grind (unlike some other - ahem - people in DC).
And, most importantly at around 1:30am, when the copious quantities of rum punch are starting to inspire drunk-munchies, order yourself a guava goat patty. Don't worry, you can thank me later. -

It was my first time...at Patty Boom Boom. If you're following me on twitter, you already know. And you also already know I find it difficult to hang with the 25-year-olds these days. That's right yelpsters I'm not 25 anymore and this ain't Kansas. But after Policy and Madhatter and Local 16, you are sort of in for it if you go to Patty Boom Boom next.
But I did. On a weeknight (Thursday). With some 25-year-olds. And had the nerve to actually drink the rum punch that somebody bought for me. Next thing I know, some guy is grabbing my hand and pulling me onto the dancefloor. Next thing I know I'm at U-Street Cardozo metro station looking at the gate which obviously (to everyone BUT me) has long since been pulled down. Groan groan.
Finally, a cab stopped for me and took me home. Next thing I know? Dam. The alarm clock was going off. Aw man. Friday at work was going to bite big time. But I made it there and made it thru. Somehow.
My first time at Patty Boom Boom was WOW! Hopefully it won't be my last...because I'm a fan.Listed in: Cherry Poppin Goodness!

I was in DC with a few friends a while back and we decided to try this place out because we had heard that it was a nice place. I guess people giving rave reviews to this place do not know what a Jamaican club and Jamaican food is truly about. This place sucked. We walked in and shuffled up the narrow stair case to the dance floor. It was beyond packed. Like fire hazard packed. I took one look at the cramped, stuffy dance floor and headed back down stairs. This place is unoriginal and has zero character. We left as quickly as we got there. Never again.

Need to know more?
1. LIVE MUSIC ON TUE AND THURS
2. Jay's Special Rum Punch concoction..not counting calories here, plus he is super good looking! I meant, he is a great bartender! the other girls are too, but that extra calorific drink he makes (for me)...he can go to second base without him even knowing...LOL
3. Amazingly delicious Veggie Patties!...with jerk sauce on the side!!! YUMMMM your lips will tingle for about 30 minutes, but soooo worth every bite!
4. Love the music ....summer time gets SUPER HOT...anyone at Patty's management please invest on AC!
Back to the patties....Shhhhhhh I have even smuggled veggie patties into Marvin's....my friends were there and we dropped by..and yes, I shared my veggie patties and sauce...LOL...oh and just found out the patties are baked at Marvins daily!! Hahahah so that one time I guess I did not do a food code violation!...I still go to Patty's...I try not to check in anymore... -

Okay I don't know where these people are from who are writing these reviews but I went on a Tuesday night and it was dead. My rum punch was watered down and I had a fake beef patty. They call it a beef patty but I don't know what the hell that was. It was not the usual pastry crust but some hard heavy type of cruse and the meat was mildly seasoned. Beef patties yuck. The jerk chicken is also bluh. I don't know if gentrification has anything to do with this but the place does not feel authentic to me. I will give this place a try on a Saturday night and update my review later. I really wanted to like this place.

If you like crowded -- and I mean crowded in the way that you can barely move crowded -- hot, sweaty clubs with loud Caribbean music, then this is the place for you. Definitely the place to go to get your dance on. Definitely NOT the place to go to be a wallflower. Good luck getting a drink.

had a great time here x
Pro's
1. Incredible reggae music
2. Mixed and mature crowd
3. Loungy feel
4. Good drinks
5. Free for ladies!
Con's
1. Gets extremely crowded (Saturday night)
2. Small dance floor on the second level (shoulder-to-shoulder)
3. Parking in the area can be extremely difficult (Adams Morgan area)
4. One bar :(
Suggested as a spot when barhopping in the Adams Morgan area (14th & U). If you love reggae you will absolutely adore the music and it is guaranteed to keep u groovin'. The crowd is mixed and mature with a lounge feel downstairs. Only bad thing is that it can get extremely crowded on a Saturday night. I would suggest coming here early because there is only one bar on the second floor and can be a bit difficult to get a drink.
Amazing place in DC more or less. The music gave it a 4! -

To quote the eloquent Brian B. "I love that this is one of the few places in DC where whites and blacks can actually be seen under the same roof at the same time, and that they can even get along and have a good time together."
Nicely said my friend. :P
But oh man, can I say I am a fan of anything spicy. I love some good Jamaican jerk chicken. The patties downstairs are awesome. And whats even greater are the sauces they have available too. The hot sauce is not for the faint of heart! It's perfectly hot for me, which means it's equivalent to the fires of hell for the average person. It will take a good 10-15 minutes for your mouth to cool off. Love it.
PS I did try the vegetarian patty and I noticed they had chick peas in it which was a nice touch from usual vegetarian items of just peppers and onions. -

So grab a drink, prepare to bump into someone (meaning no harm) and feel the rythm and beats from the booga basement. U st. needed a place like this-and Im so glad its here! -

The review is only for the food and service I received at the Taste of DC. I was very excited to try a beef patty and stopped at this booth. The beef patties were rock hard and had no flavor.
I complained to the hostess of the booth and she offered a veggy one. I replied if they were as hard as the beef, I'd rather not. The other girl (I assume the cook from her outfit) was offended, mumbled something and rolled her eyes.
I was shocked by this being the whole purpose of the Tastefest is try and drum up business with awesome personalities and great tasting food. Neither of which I received from this booth.
I will def not go to their establishment in real life. No boom boom for me, and def please no patties! -

If you like to dance to reggae music, then you need to go to Patty Boom Boom. The drink list is simple. Rum punch. Choose dark or light. The rum punches are very good. The place gets packed as the night goes on, so go early if you want to stake out some space. The DJ plays some good songs - get ready to sweat if you like to dance. Don't be going there trying to look too cute!

This has to be the best name of any DC bar or club. You just want to scream it out in your worst Jamaican accent (as if you had any other).
Repeat after me: Patty Boom Boom.
Okay, once more, but this time like you mean it:
PO-TEE BWUM BWUM!
I love that you can dance your pants off upstairs to some booming Reggae, Dancehall and Ska in a cool setting with a couple hundred sweaty, gyrating bodies packed in shoulder to shoulder. So what if your ass gets grabbed 13 times in one night? You've been working out and your glutes are firm, fit and fabulous.
I love that you have to swim through that sea of sweaty, gyrating bodies to get to the bar in the back. By the time you get there and put your hands on that icy cool cocktail, you feel like you've accomplished something, and goddamn if that cocktail ain't hittin' the spot.
I love the magic of their Dark and Stormy, easily the best I've ever had. Who knew you could manufacture miracles with a little rum and a splash of ginger beer?
I love that this is one of the few places in DC where whites and blacks can actually be seen under the same roof at the same time, and that they can even get along and have a good time together.
I love that this is the least likely spot someone will want to get into a shouting match or fist fight with me for no apparent reason. People here are chill. They come here to listen to some great music and shake their blues away by shaking their asses, so save your drama for yo mama and the Dalai Lama.
I love that I have a new place to look forward to coming to when I finally get home. And as homesick as I am, I know that every ting gon be irie, man.Listed in: Hot Girls!, In The Mood, Low Douche Factor Bars, Me & U (Street)

This place is always a sure thing. It's what a reggae spot should be. It is small and it does get crowded, but that adds to the fun. It feels like a moshpit. I love it. I always have fun when I come here. The drinks are okay, not the best but when someone else is buying who really cares. The line starts to get long as the night goes on, but if you're pretty and or sexy you shouldn't have to stand on line. That's my philosophy.

Look, you've been doing a fair business here for a couple of years (largely due to the fact that you're one of the only Reggae games in town and have a band on Tuesday nights).
I do think that's a bit unfair to your loyal patrons that after two years of successful operation you refuse to invest in proper ventilation (I refuse to come here in summer - fucking sweltering) or update that horrid sounds system (which is, after all, your namesake).
Come onnnn son! -

This is a great reggae bar! Great rum cocktails with good music is always a good recipe, they got it right. This place gets crowded on week ends but come on this is the way you should dance on dancehall right??!!! Did I mention they have jamaican patties available on the first floor? So tasty........

Review from Elsa M.
I am sad. My whole purpose for coming here was to get up on some meat patties (no pun intended - I am talking about FOOD, people. Get your minds out the gutter). Instead, I found myself getting too busy dancing for so long that by the time I went back to the counter, they had closed shop for the night! Grrrrr! However, if that is the only thing I am complaining about, you know I had a great time. The music alone was enough to put you in a great mood and seeing everyone dancing and having a great time is always a great sight to see. One of my girls was in town from out of town so we decided to spend a night on the town and I am definitely glad we made Patty Boom Boom a part of it. My drinks were a bit "meh," hence me taking away a star from my initial 4-star rating, but know that if you come out here for a night or at least part of a night like I did, it will totally be worth it. A-OK in my book!

Pros: Music, drinks, Constance
Cons: Hot, small, loud. I was too drunk to notice the time passing so quickly so I missed out on getting a Patty. Wait, that was my fault.
I came here to celebrate my birthday. This isn't a place to see and be seen or look cute or hold up the wall. You can go to Park for that. This place is meant for sweating, dancing, drinking. You will be drenched, your hair will frizz and it won't matter. None of it because you'll look up and it's 3AM and time to go home. Wear as few clothes as considered legal and don't worry about a hairstyle. Srsly. You *WILL* sweat. Bikram ain't got nothin' on Patty Boom Boom.
I loved, loved, loved working with Constance. Forget to send the contract in day of? No problem. Friends flake at the last minute and you have to text Constance changes to the guest list? No problem. She dealt with all of my absentmindedness and drunken ramblings at the end of the night with a huge smile and I vaguely recall her doing a shot with us. See Contstance. You will love her. Also, go when Rob is DJing. He's cute and can DJ. The CD they gave me as I was leaving is already downloaded and I listen to it constantly.
Did I tell you I was drunk? I was and you will be too because those bartenders are the best and cute, so you'll want to go back to the bar twice as much.
A few friends and I will be back to to partake in patties during the week. -

Patty Boom Boom is my number one love in DC!
I am a Caribbean girl at heart, and Patty Boom Boom knows how to put me in that mood to through down a good wine. The atmosphere is on point, not a pretentious crowd at all. Once I have few dark rum punches and soca starts to play that's it for me!!! I am up and ready!
The patties are good too, but they appear to be getting smaller and smaller . . .maybe its just me because I am a major foodie. :-) -

My girlfriend and I were headed out to U street for some dancing and ended up here. There was a line that looked about 20 minutes long, but the door guys were nice and let us in without waiting (which probably pissed off quite a few other patrons...). Upstairs is small, CROWDED, and hot (what the h is up with the ventilation system?!). The music is very cool and the drinks are reasonably priced for a U street venue.
For girls, be warned that there are a lot of overly aggressive men who need more than one "no" to leave you alone if you're uninterested. I finally consented to a dance and was the victim of a reach-around...I didn't even know those existed for women. Needless to say, after having my vagina groped (having my butt grabbed doesn't even seem so bad anymore), we left and our return is unlikely.
If you're looking for a hot, sweaty, dark place to get down and dirty, this is your spot. -

So the key is to go on a Sunday night, after you've had a lovely French dinner accompanied by lots and lots of wine, champagne, and digestifs.
Then you go to Patty Boom Boom, where a guy who sounds exactly like Kevin Lyttle is getting his croon on as you suck down two rum punches.
You sway as the next person gets up to entertain, strumming a guitar and singing a raggae version of Nina Simone's "Feelin' Good." Don't worry, it's not crowded at all! Just a few other people out for the music and rum super late on a school night.
Once the mix of alcohol hits you, you taxi home and fall asleep, deep asleep, so deep that you -- nor the hangover -- cannot make you wake up to go to work the next morning.
It's okay. You loved Patty Boom Boom's Captain Morgan rum punch. And you hate Mondays anyway.Listed in: Places I Like to Get My…, Mis ROTDes

We stood in line for over 30 minutes. Watched people leave the line. Saw a lot of people cut the line. By the time we got to the door, I wasn't sure if I even wanted to party with a crowd like this, especially since we kept hearing that the place was packed. But my friends insisted since we had already stood on line for 30 minutes at that point.
The music was great, but that was the only thing I liked about this place. The very small dancehall combined with overly-aggressive men creates abundant opportunity for unwanted groping. In the hour that we were in there, my friends and I squeezed into a tight little crowd in a corner by the DJ booth in our sad attempt to ward off and discourage creepers from grinding up on us or grabbing our butts. -

Very tiny dance area! But I must admit the good vibes were all around. Music was on point all night- if you like reggae. The crowd was great and seemed really into the music. I mostly really enjoy them sticking to actual reggae and playing some of the old favorites.
Con- way crowded esp. if you show up past 11
Con- mad hot inside.
Pro- great music
Pro- good vibes
the hot and small environment evens out when you're feeling the reggae vibes running right through you.
p.s. white, black, asian, latino- whatever, it doesn't matter whose inside as long as you're lovin the music and feelin the vibe -

Patty Boom Boom might be funny to party at if you haven't gotten your hair done sometime soon as you will sweat it out!
The music is great, men grab up on you and all of that, that's interesting but okay I guess.
What I cannot tolerate is a bad patty! Worse I've ever had, and I'm Caribbean so I've had my fair share. Vegetable is flavorless and beef is dry. Pastry is... I don't even know what that is!! Do yourself a favor and have a patty elsewhere. -

I was in the mood to hear some reggae music and bust a move when I headed over to Patty Boom Boom last Friday. I could hear the music pulsing from the upstairs sound system as soon as my friends and I arrived around 10pm on a Friday night. The crowd was just getting warmed up when we arrived on the scene. By 11pm, the 2nd floor level was packed and people were really getting down.
DJ Cultcha and TG (CultchaSound), played a great selection of old and new reggae tunes all night, which kept the crowd moving. I danced all night with a few quick breaks to cool off from the sweltering heat in the room. You could easily sweat your hair out in this place, but no one seems to mind because the music is so good and people are genuinely there to dance and to have a good time.
Red Stripe beer, Rum Punch, and Ting are some popular Jamaican drinks that can be purchased at the bar to quench your inevitable thirst. If you get the munchies, you need only walk downstairs to order a patty.
I can definitely see myself becoming a regular at this spot!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Jia J.
Wait, people come here for food?! (I'm talkin' to you, Sean B.) Definitely missed that part of it, because I came to party.
This place is not sketchy at all, which actually made me vaguely sad. This was my first visit to a reggae/Caribbean club in the U.S. (the first one I'd really found one, for that matter), so I had no idea what to expect. I pictured a huge stage with live music and a wood floor (because it couldn't be dirt) dancehall hotboxed by a bunch of hardcore rastas with natty dreads.
But hello, this is our nation's capital, not a local spot in Jamaica. True, I saw more rastafari influenced people than I'd seen in one place since a trip to the West Indies in 1999, but that meant like five people. Everyone else was of all races and dressed up just as they would be for any other club or lounge.
The sound system was ambient and clean, not gritty and rattly with blown out subwoofers. The bouncer wasn't a red-eyed shadester, and the coat check was secure (though I saved my dollars for drinks), and the space was a high-ceilinged modern affair with the deejay calling all the shots from a loft overhead as a projector played images on the expanse of white walling across from the deejay's balcony.
There were a few wafts of MJ in the air, but it wasn't even as prominent as parts of San Francisco get during broad daylight. An alcove of windows overlooking the street was lined all around with a bench. Hardly anyone was taking advantage of this seating; they were too busy dancing or gettin' drank. I had no problem just chucking my jacket there with the rest, wallet and all.
It is my pleasure to report that they didn't play Bob Marley. Maybe they did, but once or twice only. I have endless respect for Bobby, but we all know there's more to reggae than "Get Up, Stand Up," and "Buffalo Soldier." The song choices were still a bit laxer than I expected it to be in a dance place, and yet everyone was dancing, including the group of bachelor friends I was with.
The bar was bustling, but had a quick turnover. People got their drinks, then got the hell out of the way. THAT part of Patty Boom Boom reminded me of the Caribbean. Also, a couple sleepy eyed guys said, "hello, beautiful," while one man asked me for a pen. When I apologized that I didn't have one, he shouted, "AH. BUT FEMALES USUALLY DO." I had no savvy retort. Something to think about.
The bartenders knew what was up, and churned out quality drinks in mere seconds. After a couple Red Stripes, my contacts were sticking to my eyeballs and I felt bloated. Thinking of a good rum drink other than the standard rum and Coke, I asked for a Dark and Stormy. Best choice ever. The dark rum was mouthpuckeringly strong, and then there was a well of fresh ginger beer to enjoy at the bottom, just like the sun after a storm.
The only downside was realizing again that I am so bad at dancing that I can't manage the simple task of nodding my head up and down without looking like a damn Teletubby on acid. Another harsh was witnessing one of the dudes I was associated with rubbing up onto a girl from behind (by the way, dudes, girls don't like this). How embarrasing. Fortunately but also disappointingly, she never bothered turning around. That does not mean she liked it; she was just too nice or too indifferent to assert herself by kicking him in the dick. The only thing that erased the image of his grabby hands creeping around her hips but never actually making a move was the image of my own hands covered with chili cheese fries at Ben's later....
Because wouldn't you know it, one of the main benefits of this unique (especially in wholesome DC) hangout is its proximity to Ben's Chili Bowl, where you can sop up the rot gut with a half smoke while coming down to a song by The Temptations...then fall asleep with your mouth open on the bus ride back to Woodley.
P.S. Ladies get in FREE. Damn right! Guys, don't complain: cover's only 5 bucks, which you can contribute towards guying a girl a drink...that is, if you grow the balls to talk to her face instead of thrusting weakly (a dying guppy springs to mind) at the pockets of her nice fitting jeans. -
Review from Rony M.
Praise the King of Kings, Haile Selassie-I, for being ejected from Marvin for having a recently expired license. That pretentious, overrated, and overpriced establishment is right around the corner from Patty Boom Boom, but they are worlds apart.
First I'd like to tell you that this is the most aptly named club of all time.
Downstairs there are 6 variations on the Jamaican Patty including Caribbean Vegetable, Spicy Turkey, Guava Goat, Jerk Chicken, Mild and Spicy Beef. Now you may not believe this self-proclaimed carnivore, but the gold medal belongs to the veggie. It's really the love child of an Indian samosa (filling) and a Jamaican patty (crust), and I haven't even told you the best part; you get 1 for $3 or 3 for $5.
It's a "Rhum Bar" so all of the advertised drinks have some component of Jamaican rum. I downed the following;
Wild Ting - Ting Jamaican grapefruit soda + light rum
Dark and Stormy - Gosling's ginger beer + dark rum + lime
Rum Punch with dark, gold, or light rum (too sweet and had scary fruit garnish)
Every drink I ordered was a reasonable $8, and the bartenders even fulfilled my crazy requests to 86 the ice, it was after all 25 degrees outside. Being DC, the Red Stripe Ambassador was represented in the form of the Lager's distinctive tall boys. Beer in combination with the "potpourri" helped the crowd of students from elite Northeastern colleges do exactly this...
http://www.youtube.com...
Upstairs is the Boom Boom Room and it reminded me of why I loved dancehall music at middle school cotillions; the relentless and probing frotteurism. At that tender age you only knew one dance and its was the "hot dog in the bun dance" and you used it for everything...even slow songs. I wonder what kind of injuries are inflicted when soft and complicated genitalia meet cold, hard steel with enough friction to start a fire. Ladies just make sure your birth control is current or you'll have all the "da Boom's" patrons in a line-up on this show.
http://www.youtube.com...
Since you never find out who the real father is, I hypothesize that those kids all belong to...Maury.
You'll be sad to leave the energetic crowd, and irie music. You won't miss the humid 90 degree temperature raised by all the dancing people, nor the scent of sweet perfume mixed with raw onion, and ball sweat. Just be careful when exiting, as the stairs are treacherous for all you medicated glaucoma patients.
In Miami dancehall clubs are in questionable neighborhoods where you can't relax because you're worried about your car or are busy getting into brawls. This club is on relatively civilized U Street, so come to Patty's with your rasclat bredren for a night filled with dining, drinking, and debauchery.Listed in: Out of State, Out of Mind

It's always wayyy too crowded, and there's not much space to move around. Plus I never really see any eye candy.
So why am I giving this place five stars?
The music, the vibe, the cheap(er for DC) drinks that are not watered down. Definitely pick up a rum punch or Red Stripe. Long Islands are good, too. Plus they serve food downstairs sometimes. Free admission for ladies, $10 for guys and free street parking (explains why it's so packed).
It's totally unpretentious and fun. People here actually dance, unlike in a lot of other DC clubs, where people just stand with their backs against the wall. This takes me back to actual Jamaica and its clubs. It's pretty authentic. -

This Patty Boom Boom is an instant classic, not only do you get one Boom but you get TWO! The atmosphere allows you to truely admire old speakers on the walls. The drinks will make you say: BUK-BUK-BUK!! I wanted to snag a beef patty but no one was giving them out. Its ok, cause JUMBO SLICE/Latin Club accross the street does the trick! I will be back!

Following white Five Percenters, white rastas have to be the biggest retards on the planet.
Patty Boom Boom wins the dubious honor of being the whitest reggae club..It;s nothing special; just a commodified recreation of a grimy ass Jamaican club, which always looks bare and unfinished because they can't afford it or it just don't care as long as they can dance. The type where they shoot those youtube dancehall videos with motherfuckers doing crazy shit on ladders and high ceiling beams. Patty Boom Boom, however, has that sort of elitist fratboy undertone I associate with gentrification that I find just about everywhere now. I'd almost say it's just another place where well dressed white people come to drink in a sterile plastic environment. The drinks and drink prices ain't from yard, that's for damn sure.
Despite all my usual nitpickin shit, I like it here for the music if nothing else. I haven't found any other reggae joints or places with consistent and/or good reggae nights, and the selecta is on point most of the time. Weeknights are slower, with roots and roots dub transitioning to more dancehall on the weekends. The weeknight crowds are small enough so there's room to move around, but not exactly chill though. Lots of dudes rollin fi dolo staring and attempting to grit at people (an dfailing miserably). Weekends can be crowded as shit, and again it feels like a bit of a sausagefest. It's clear to me this place's greatest utility is as a good weeknight spot on U when you're with some cool people and want to hear some decent music and chill. Yelpers have an amazing ability to take places I hate (18th street lounge, the gibson) and make em bearable for a night.
I promise I'll try a patty one day, to see if their jerk chicken can hang with Golden Krust. The guava goat sounds interesting too, and I'll admit I haven't heard of those before. There don't seem to be many places to get a patty in DC anyway, aside from 7-11 or some shitty corner store, and I'm glad it's on U. Though I still doubt it can possibly fuck with Christie's of BK. -

Patty Boom Boom's is the shiz bam swizzle. While I can't comment on the quality of booty shakin' that goes on upstairs, I can tell you that their patties are awesome.
There's never been a huge line to grab a quick bite to eat and the patty selections are endless! (Ok, maybe they're not endless but there's always a decent variety). I got the jerk goat patty which was divine! Despite their small/ medium-ish stature, these patties are pretty filling. The best part is that they serve patties til the wee hours of the night too, so if you're looking for late night munchies, look no further! -

Wednesday night: Chillness. Good beats. The vibe is perfect for chillin' while soaking in groovy music or shaking and swaying in sync with the beats.
The crowd is diverse and vibrant. The atmosphere is easy.
Two statements made by my husband succinctly describe Patty Boom Boom, "See, not all of DC sux. We need to stop hanging out with only white people." -

I'm really convinced that Patty Boom Boom is the best thing that happened to the U St clubbin' scene. The best thing about it: IT'S FREE! With that being said, there is usually a ridculously long line that extends all the way to the corner and the doorman is pretty damn rude/mean, he acts like he doesn't want to let people in.
The downstairs is the restaurant part where you can get all different types of patties (chicken, beef, bean, etc.). The upstairs is the club part and as soon as you touch the first step, you can already feel the desert-like heat escaping down. THERE ARE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW HOT THIS PLACE IS, but I guess in the winter time, that is a good thing.
The drinks are reasonable, I think a rum punch is about $6 or something and they actually give you REAL glasses with your drinks, not little plastic cups or short glasses. The thing I love the most about this club though, even though it is hot as ever and you will definitely sweat your MAC makeup off and come out with your hair looking like a pomeranian, is the fact that everyone dances! I love to go to a club where people actually dance! The crowd is also a pretty good mix too :) -

The rum punch and beef patties have gone up. :( $4.75 for a beef patty? Really?
The aforementioned rum punch was ridiculously bitter on Fri.
Staff are still really friendly, though.
I still love the music, but left early because the bass was so hard, I felt like my eyes were going to start bleeding.Listed in: And U Know This, Man!, Spots Where My Evil Twin…

Not a big reggae fan (nothing personal I enjoy it casually) but I was taken here on a date just to try something new. I had so much fun! Granted it was crowded and I almost had to strip down to my bra and panties due to the heat. The music was fun the rum punches were delish (needed to b a little stronger). Overall its a fun environment for a 21+ crowd. Haven't been here in a few summers but I'm def gonna make up for lost time! Next time I gotta try a patty tho...

This place has good time written on its forehead.
While the downstairs patty eatery seems innocent enough, as soon as you ascend the darkened stairwell to the right the boom boom portion of the evening begins. Rhythmic reggae beats reverberate through the dancers, shaking and stepping in their own world. It's too dark to see the details but the groupings and sweaty heat made me thirsty for a drink. A dangerously strong rum punch in hand, we stood to the side and swayed and ogled and swayed some more. If I hadn't been so darn exhausted I know I would've been on that dance floor but as it was I enjoyed scoping out the mixes of sizes, shapes, colors and ages filling the main stage of the bar. Everyone was swaying and dreamily content with the booming music and chill vibe.
Patty Boom Boom is real cool trip, though I'm glad I left when I did or I might have ended up with something written on MY forehead after a few more rum punches.Listed in: My Trip(s) to Washington, D.C.
