- Sometimes noisy children :(
If cozy, neighborhood family-owned cafes with warm friendly staff are your scene, give Coffee Luvers (formerly Patima's) a try!
They have, hands down, the best Vietnamese sandwiches in the city (as compared to Chinatown's Little Paris or Thanh Thanh Cafe across the street.)
The atmosphere is multi-faceted. Smokers/sunners bask on the sidewalk-seating. There are small tables by the windows. Couch sets and coffee tables in the back. The decor is cozily living-roomish, complete with a decorative fireplace. As others have said, a good place to catch up with a friend!
The only downside: it doesn't happen too often, but sometimes (as is usually the case with family-owned businesses) children clomp through the cafe like hyperactive ponies. The staff tries to keep a reign on the noise level, but it's quite distracting.
Despite that, I find myself returning time and again for the free wi-fi and delicious Vietnamese-wiches. See you there, neighborhood cafe sitters! -

Be prepared for more cigarette smoke than a café in Europe. Patima's attracts people who seem to smoke at least a pack a day and the entire café smells smoky since the door is left open and the smoking occurs right outside the door.
One woman was running the place by herself, so you might have to wait longer than usual for your order. She was very nice, maybe too nice? She allowed someone to bring a dog into the café, not a seeing eye dog.
The back area looks like someone's living room. Painted in warm autumn-inspired hues, this area of the cafe has comfy couches, a fireplace with a painting hanging above it, curtains, coffee tables, wood floors, bathroom, and even a coat rack. I tried sitting here to escape from the smoke but it didn't help much.
In addition to espresso drinks, they have muffins, croissants, cookies in glass jars, sandwiches (bagel and regular lunch ones, I didn't see any Vietnamese ones), crepes, Belgian waffle on weekends, chicken wrap, bagel sandwiches, croissant sandwiches, egg rolls, fried banana with ice cream, Numi tea, loose leaf tea by the pot, Yerba Mate, Thai iced tea, coffee by the pound, Vietnamese iced coffee and pumpkin spice lattes. They had lavender cappuccinos - interesting!
I had a medium latte ($3.15) which was good: not bitter but smooth, good milky flavor, strong enough. The English muffin with Swiss cheese and egg ($3.50) was just okay: the muffin should have been toasted longer, the egg was microwaved, there wasn't much egg and the sandwich wasn't hot enough.
You may be able to find unlimited parking in the area, not on Clement but on the side streets and California Ave.

Had the Thai Chicken salad today. I'm right next door to them, so I needed something quick and healthy. I am not a coffee drinker so I can't give you an opinion on the coffees/lattes/mochas/etc. The food is decent. 6 dollars for a salad..............aint too bad. Gotta support my neighbors.
They recently beefed up their menu, so they do have Vietnamese sandwiches as well. I had it there a few weeks ago. It's good. They also have a breakfast menu as well on the weekends.
Extra star because we are neighbors. -

TEA
Specialty tea's at the counter look like they should have been tossed out some time ago. :(
PEPPERMINT MOCHA
Made with the syrup... yuck.
CROISSANT HAM AND CHEESE SANDWICH
AYFKM!?!?! Take 2 slices of the thinnest ham a machine can make, add a equally thin slice of cheese, and a touch of lettuce tomato... then charge $5-6. What a joke.
BREAKFAST BAGEL SANDWICH
Small and boring.
TUNA MELT -- "New!"
No idea... it was noon and they hadn't bothered to make any tuna.
STAFF
The lady working the counter when we were there seemed like she would rather be anywhere else on Earth.
CHILL OUT
Two tables street side in the grime of Clement. Indoor seating with some outlets and free wi-fi (staple these days).
OVERALL
Maybe I wasn't there on a good day? Maybe the weekend is the time go go? Maybe this puppy is headed in to the toilet... -

Thank god for little coffee shops like this!
Free wifi. YES!
Chicken Curry Salad Sandwich. Talk about a pleasant unexpected surprise. I'd go back again, just for the sandwich.
Pleasant staff!
Quaint little sitting area in the back with couches and the like. Great for catching up with old friends on a cold day. And in the Richmond... when isn't it cold.
Brrrrrrr-avo. -

I love chai, and i love green tea... put them together you have the ultimate creation of GREEN TEA CHAI! Yeah this place charges you a little bit more than starbucks, but think about it! ORGANIC DRINKS! With prices going up at Starbucks, you might well a few more cents on the organic drinks.
I walked into Patima's and the first thing i see is the ripped ass guy that looked like a gangster behind the counter with all the tattoo's on his arm, i didn't know what to think, i didn't know if my drink was going to be good or not, but let me tell you this guy makes a mean! I MEAN MEAANNN green tea chai, one of the best chais I've ever had! Thanks man!
ORGANIC FTW! -

This is my neighborhood cafe and I can't believe it took me so long to find this place (I made the mistake of walking extra blocks to either a Starbucks or Peets).
Anyway, the staff here are super nice. Free Wifi. They make the best Vietnamese sandwiches and my vanilla lattes are always perfectly made. Upon my discovery, I came back the next two days because I couldn't get enough.
Thanks Patima! -

8 a.m. on a Saturday morning, and we're in the Outer Richmond looking for coffee (and a bite to eat for my starving and hungover friend). I was happy to find this local coffee shop where everybody seemed to know each other with friendly staff behind the counter.
They serve breakfast bagel sandwiches with egg, cheese and a choice of meat. It was the perfect score for us since there wasn't much else open in the neighborhood at that time.
Awesome neighborhood spot. -

I hit up Patima's every weekend I'm in town. They have really good bagel sandwiches, great coffee and a good selection of tasty treats. Haven't tried the tea yet, but everyone seems to rave about it. On sunny days the outdoor seating is really nice too. Comfy couches and a chill, friendly vibe. Free WiFi too.
Patima and her husband are really chill and they don't pick up your food with their bare hands like some of the other coffee shops in the Richmond! Check this place out. -

Superb organic coffee and tea shop that sells coffee and tea drinks as well as sandwiches and snacks. They have an excellent variety of premium grade loose black and green tea leaves to purchase by the ounce. Right now I am totally addicted to their organic ginseng tea pearls (works for Anthony Kiedis too) which gives you a long lasting groovy "herbal buzz". They also sell the mega-delicious "Monkey Picked" Iron Goddess Of Mercy (can we talk about a really cool name) tea. Cheers!

I love Green tea and I love good chai... but it won't be found here. I told the barista to make it not too sweet... That didn't happen. I ended up with a cup of sugared milk with chai flavoring. blah. I think I got a cavity from sipping it...

Came here on sunday for coffee after I had dimsum with my gf. Vanilla soy latte was perfect just the way I like it. Not too hot and not too sweet. My gf ordered the peppermint mocha....I assume it was good she finished it. Nice quiet neighborhood coffee. We wre able to sit and chat for a while. I did noticed that they served food here for very decent prices I might add. I came back this morning wanting to try the vietnamese combo ham sandwich...I feel like finding the perfect one is a mission right now. But they were too busy and I was late for work. I guess I have to try again next time.

Classy organic coffee and tea at fair prices. Yay. Don't bother with Royal Ground a few doors down.

I started liking this place when it was still Zazen. Thankfully the product hasn't changed. The best drink for a non coffee drinker here is an organic green tea soy chai. Being a tea fanatic, I can also say that the loose leaf teas are top of the line. This is where I first got hooked on genmaicha and monkey picked oolong. The owners are friendly, cafe clean and the overall atmosphere is comfortable. As for the parking, watch out for those meter maids. They are extremely aggressive ticketers even this far out on Clement.
