A good grocery store, just requires a car to get to (or bus). This used to be somewhere they shuttled local university students from Penn to come get groceries; not sure if they still do that.
There's almost always a good deal to be had, fresh produce and meat, and feels like a truly suburban grocery store. Lines are long at times, but the only real problem is the distance from the city if you don't have a car. Not as much in the way of organic or specialty foods, but anything basic can be found here for a good deal.
Holy effing shit, this has got to be the most ghetto grocery store I've ever been to! Lazy employees, scary clientele (think random homeless crazy guy wandering around), dingy store, bad produce...I get the creeps just thinking about it.
My husband asked for an application for their club card (or savings card, whatever). The cashier gave him this look and said, "There's no one in the back to get it." What?? There's no one to get a piece of paper? I thought most supermarkets had those apps up front!
The produce and produce selection were horrendous. The stuff I got seems like it had been sitting out for days-- the onions were mushy! Eww!
Sure, if you want to save money, come here, but you get what you pay for. I'd rather hit up Acme.
Never going back here again.
Well, it's not the worst supermarket I've been to, but, just after to the Shop-Rite off of W. Passyunk, it definitely ranks as the second worst in the greater Philly area I've been to. When I moved back to Philly last year I was happy to see the place got a face-lift, but disappointed to learn the improvements were solely cosmetic. That, combined with the fact that it's only a couple blocks away from me, has raised my frustration level with the place high enough to give it only one star. Why?
1. Products (especially dry/jarred/canned goods) are frequently left on the shelves long after their expiration dates.
2. Selection isn't that good, and when it comes to the deli section it's not nearly as good as many Shop-Rites or Acmes (or Fresh Grocer for that matter). Hell, one time I was going to buy Russian dressing and there was a whole isle full of all kinds of dressing but no Russian (except for the red, syrupy Wish-Bone kind, which isn't real Russian dressing by a long shot). I mean, what the hell kind of supermarket of that size doesn't carry Russian dressing? One time I couldn't even find plain English muffins-- raisin, low-carb, but no regular. And no salad/olive/mozzarella bar? What the hell?
3. Products are often stocked and organized counterintuitively, making it difficult to find items. Moreover the cheese section in the deli area does not have the individual containers marked, and stocks them haphazardly to where the product doesn't match the price label next to it. Want to know how much that Brie or Pecorino Romano is before you put it in the basket? Well, there's a damn good shot you'll have no clue because it's not properly marked.
4. The store is often understaffed, especially on weekends, and even worse on holiday weekends. On some holiday weekends the lines that form are staggering-- snaking around the length of all the aisles, and not even half of the aisles are in service. I've never seen anything like it in any other supermarket I've been to.
Whoever the general manager is here should be immediately fired for their horrifying level of incompetence and shameful mismanagement. And not sure if it's the owner/corporate or GM's fault, but spending all that money on purely cosmetic renovations but not on hiring more staff or better supervision-- downright stupid.
When you first walk in, there is an obnoxious odor. It finally dawned on me that it is coming from the seafood department. This store does not believe in customer service, rather, customer dis-service. I finally gave up going to this place. On two different occasions, I asked two different deli clerks about hams in the deli case. Something as in: "What is this ham like". Both clerks on both clerks looked at me like I was asking for them to walk on their hands and replied, in a disgusted voice......"It's ham". Gee, thanks, that tells me a lot. The last clerk, a particulary abrasive woman, was very smug when she asked in her raspy voice: "It's ham". I could not contain myself and said that I knew it was ham, WHAT KIND?. I used to use the self checkout to avoid the nastiness of the checkers. Alas, that left me to deal with the nasty clerks at the self checker. There is one who will blab away on her cell phone or to other employees and let you stand there waiting and waiting. One day she looked at me and asked if I needed help. Again, I could not contain myself and had to reply that this was the reason why I was standing in front of her. Watch the prices, because the charged price is often higher than the self price. It really is best to stay away though
I've read the negative reviews, but I have to disagree. I've been going to this Pathmark for a year and I haven't run into anything very objectionable except maybe the other customers at times (When I lightly bumped a woman's cart trying to get by she called me a "white piece of trash.") The selection is better at the Shop Rite near Delaware Avenue (on Snyder? Near Target) if you're looking for things like vegetarian products. But for everyday shopping, this Pathmark is fine.
Okay, so you're asking, "What kind of jerk shouts out a commercial supermarket?" I do.
Why? Because time after time, I meet Philly 20-somethings complaining about the cost of groceries in Philadelphia. Few people ever venture to Gray's Ferry (unless for cheap car washes...more on that to come), but PathMark is the best to get all your essentials.
Pathmark is DIRT CHEAP, has a huge selection, and tons of free parking. What I would suggest is that you get your produce and meats at a Mom & Pop or Trader Joe's, but everything else... come to Pathmark. While it's five steps below a Fresh Grocer, this is very comparable to Acme, which sucks up money like marrying Robin Givens.
There's another one on Oregon Ave, but I've never been... this one has been a staple in my routine for over four years.
I love this grocery store. In most of Philly, you have to either choose quality or price. I can spend an entire months paycheck at Whole Foods in approximately 12.6 seconds. On the other hand, at some of the nameless West Philly grocery stores, the produce section consists entirely of tomatoes and lettuce and the international section has nothing more than Goya. The pathmark has the best of both worlds. A produce section with an actual selection of vegetables and fruit that sometimes even go on sale, and not because they're moldy. This pathmark also has a seafood counter that doesn't smell of almost bad fish, and while the selection isn't the best in the city, it is the most reasonably priced. The meat section, however, is my favorite. Almost every time I visit, something is so cheap that it's virtually free. This week pork chops, next week leg of lamb!!! The rest of the store is just as reasonable. It's also bright, clean and sells wonderful house candles for $3; who could ask for more?

if you have a car it's easy to get to, of not, it's on the 64 bus route. it's open 24 hours. stuff is pretty cheap and if you have a savings card you will come out saving 3 to 5 bucks each time you shop.
the produce is decent, they have a good selection of frozen vegetarian foods and they have store brand soymilk that is tasty! you can get your basics here and then head over to the specialty stores for the fancy stuff and you WILL save money.
sometimes the lines are long and the cashiers are like "what? reusable bag?", also they have the LOUDEST intercom for store announcements. but seriously, open 24 hours, cheap, and most of what you need is here. oh yeah :)
