TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. WORST BANKING EXPERIENCE EVER!!
I joined Patelco largely because of their competitive rates and user opinions such as the ones below. I went to the Geary Branch off 24th Ave in the Richmond District. I got an auto loan and new checking with them. Twice I has issues with the DMV and my insurance company and I asked the Branch Manager for assistance and he said and I quote "that's not my problem." Then I got the DMV and the Insurance people on the phone to talk to the Mgr, but the manager refused to talk to them. Finally, I bypassed the bank completley and did all the paperwork and research myself. The only good the bank did was cut the check. And when he did hand me the check, he didn't even extend his hand for thank you and look me in the eye. Still hasn't even given me his business card. These are mandatory service essentials!
I am transferring my loan and checking to another bank once the dust settles. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this bank to anyone who is serious about banking and their money. If you are only interested in rates, then CU's are the wise choice. If you are interested in convenience, customer service, and a wide variety of product offerings, go to a commerical bank where they are professionals.

BEWARE.
This particular branch's service RUINS the entire Patelco experience. I avoid it like the plague because they put a hold on all of my checks... even with a measly monetary amount like $50. Above all, they freeze all of my obviously corporate-cut paychecks. (I bring in the same check from the same employer week after week... i am not 100% sure about this, but i was informed that it is illegal to put a hold on paychecks below a certain amount.) Once, an unexpected hold on a check for under $1000 prevented me from paying my rent on time. I pleaded with the teller to process that check since it was such a small amount. She looked at me with sympathetic eyes, but she pointed to the manager across the room and said that he would fire her if she didn't follow Patelco rules. Which brings me to the branch manager. Creepy. If you are a younger female, he will more than likely watch you when you are there. If you have to talk to him, god forbid, he doesn't really listen to suggestions without becoming defensive, doesn't give coherent explanations of the various bank accounts available to customers, and focuses his attention on the scenery more than your financial needs. When I opened a simple savings/checking account, I asked for a credit card too. The manager INSISTED on doing credit checks and other "research" for me. In the end, he charged me for a few hours of work! It takes less than a half an hour to get a credit report from the 3 main credit bureaus online. What took this man a few hours?! Incompetence is my guess.
I was traumatized by Patelco and seriously considered joining a major bank like Bank of America until I visited the main branch on 2nd Street. Friendly staff, efficient service, and no holds on my payroll or personal checks after a few visits! I told the tellers there of my negative experiences at the Geary branch and two of them informed me of other clients who had absolutely horrible, miserable experiences. Although I have to travel out of my way to the downtown branch, its worth every minute that I lose. That's how much I dislike the Geary location.
Feel good about yourself and support a credit union like Patelco. Just avoid the Geary branch.
