This place was recommended to me by Helena so I had to try it.  On my way back from Stop n Shop I picked up a Chicken Empanada, Pork Arepa, and the famous Green plantain sandwich filled with saucy shredded beef and brought it home for dinner.
I couldn't wait to get home cuz while I waited patiently for my made to order food, my mouth was watering just looking at the pics on the menu.

Here are the details (see pics for delicious mouth watering goodness)

The Chicken Empanada:  Shredded chicken, a little bland and the empanada was thick.  For $1 this is a snack.  The special spicy sauce makes it taste so much better so make sure you get the sauce!

Pork Arepa:  I used 2 napkins for this.  The arepa isn't a pocket like I'm used to from Caracas bar, it's an open sandwich so I made such a mess with the green mayo sauce dripping onto my hands.  But it was delish so I didn't care.  The pork was flavorful shreds and chunks.  However the Arepa itself was a not paper thin so the soft interior breading would fall out of my sandwich.

Carne Machada Patacon:  Whoever invented this is a GENIUS! Marinated shredded beef sandwiched between 2 fried thin green plantains.  It took me another 2 napkins to eat this sandwich.  The Patacon was so big and filled with so much meat, I shared both sandwiches and had difficultly finishing this one.

I think I prefer the shredded pork meat to the beef.  The pieces are slightly smaller and easier to eat.  Less messy also!
The prices aren't bad ($10 for everything listed here and it fed 2 people).  The place is small, a few stools around a window counter.  I suggest taking the food to go.  I took a few menus to pass around to my friends.  They also deliver so consider yourself lucky if you live in Elmhurst!

I'm saving the last star for when I try the Cachapas!

Before coming here, I had never heard of patacones.
My first experience was a revelation.

Stewed and shredded beef with lettuce, tomatoes and mayo between two fried plantains.
It was unbelievable!
It had all the right elements --- crunchy, salty, juicy goodness in each bite. I don't doubt that this thing is a caloric nightmare. But, it's so good that you hardly care.

It's a small, modest place. They had been operating out of a food truck before opening here. But, the girls behind the counter are friendly and helpful. The food is different from the many varieties of Spanish cuisine that I've formerly had. Living in Corona, I pass by Colombian, Mexican, Argentinian and Dominican places every day, while this is the first Venezuelan place I've come across.

I love it, and will be returning again and again. A great addition to the neighborhood!

My wife and I have just returned from dining here and we both enjoyed their food so much.  I had to go immediately straight to yelp to sing it's high praises!  We ordered a Carne Mechada (shredded beef) Arepa which was full of tender beef, lettuce, tomatoes, and their special salsa/sauce.  They provided us with a side of their special hot sauce that was really good.  It elevated the arepas from great to outstanding.

We also ordered the Patacones (Green Plantain Sandwich) with chicken as the filling.  It was a big sandwich that I figure would fill most people, but being the glutton and blessed with a bottomless stomach, I unashamedly finished my wifes portion as she was filled from the arepa.  It was the first time we tried a Patacones and were won over by this.  All you plantain lovers, watch out!! It is that good.

We were told Patacon had opened here in Elmhurst about one month ago.  The young lady at the counter was very friendly and gladly answered our questions since we were not too familiar with Venezuelan food.  It was a pleasant experience right from our first step in this little eatery.  It is clean, modern, nicely decorated but yet humble in style.  We had a good time eating by the window counter top.  They even had $1 Diet Coke to boot, yoohoo!!  I definitely will be coming back to try the Cachapa (sweet corn cake) with shredded beef that I eyed on our friends plate, and of course the other fares offered on their menu.  The Elmhurst area has another little gem of affordable delectable eateries to add to its list.

O M G
VENEZUELAN food CLOSE TO My house????
I was on my way to Target and I passed by this place, i read the logo, all the sudden it says COMIDA "VENEZOLANA"and i SMILED WITH My  venezuelan flag right in my eyes!!!!

so Finally I don't have to go too caracas arepa bar to get my own country food!. They have a lot of selection such as Cachapas, arepas, tequenos, nothing specials for drinks tho (no papelon con limon or chichas...)

Place is small, only 7 seats, and mostly is for take outs of delivery. so Don't expect to bring a date for this place.

Took pictures of the menu for you to view it!
So now, i can have it for breakfast, lunch or dinner, wooo hoo!

PS... cash only , no credit cards.

I was sauntering home on my sleepy street of Grand Ave in Elmhurst where restaurants are not the main attraction.....if there ever WAS a main attraction to Elmhurst aside from the Queens Center Mall and Target on Queens Blvd......i digress....

All of a sudden i see a bright little hole in the wall restaurant that just wasn't there in the morning when i left my house.......  I make a U-turn and J-Walk to the location and to my immediate excitement it's Venezuelan....meaning they have patacones and arepas!! YAY!!

At first i didn't think I could try anything yet without any cash and i was SOOOO bummed...then i remembered!! I had just sold off one of my text books from last semester and just happened to have cash on hand!!! YAY for me!!

I've had arepas before but never a patacon which is a fried plantain sandwich.  yes...that's right..... instead of a corn cake, tortilla, or bread the meat sits in between two flattened pieces of plantain banana.....

so good it would get an atheist saying "sweet jesus"

i ordered the Carne Mechada which is shredded beef....it was juicy and delicious and now i love Elmhurst just a bit more. :)  I so determined to get yelpers out here to try this place.  One Patacon was $5 but the arepas are $4.50.  They also have cachapas......which are sweet corn cakes that have meat in the middle.....I LOVE VENEZUELAN FOOD!

The ladies who work there are so friendly....they even gave me a free empanadita to try while i waited......yum.

did i mention this place is like 2 blocks away from me???! AHHH!

(cash only open 7am-10pm M-Sun) Grand opening was today!!

Everyone go try it out!!!  I know Elmhurst is off most people's maps (borough snobs) but if it would make you feel better you can walk down Broadway and go to Lao Bei Fang and grab some f*ckin great dumplings too if your stomach can muster it.
